What is Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?
Spice of Life: Carrot Edition is part of this pack, and the version you get is 1.16.5. It has been in the pack since release 1.22 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the mod list rather than a recent addition.[1]
Unverified I don't have a confirmed description of what the mod does in this pack. There's no platform page or in-jar guidebook to draw on, so I won't guess at its mechanics, config values or recipes. The data I have also shows no quests involving the mod, and it isn't on the ATM Star path, so it doesn't look like a progression gate. Check in-game before relying on any specific behavior.
How do you get started with Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Good news: getting started with Spice of Life: Carrot Edition in this pack is a one-item job. The first thing you make is the Food Book. Everything else comes from eating, so the sooner you have it, the sooner your meals start counting.[2][3]
Step 1: Craft the Food Book
The Food Book is a shapeless recipe added by the mod, and the pack's recipe dump shows no other recipe for it. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[2]
Step 2: Eat a variety of foods
The mod tracks how many unique foods you have eaten. Reaching milestones can increase your max health, and the Food Book's stats show how many more foods you need until the next one. Once you reach the highest milestone, it tells you so, and you can't gain more health from trying new foods.[3]
The stats also show how many hearts each milestone gives. The exact milestone sizes aren't in the sources I have, so check your own Food Book for the numbers.[3]
Then read your food tooltips
Food tooltips tell you whether a food will help. A food you haven't tried yet is marked as not yet eaten, and one you've already eaten is marked as having assisted in adding hearts.[3]
- Cheap foods aren't nourishing enough to improve your health, so eating them has no noticeable effect. The Food Book has a minimum hunger value that foods must provide to count towards milestones.[3]
- Foods on the blacklist can't improve your health.[3]
- If a whitelist is in use, foods that aren't on it can't improve your health either.[3]
Unverified This pack has no quests for this mod, and I have no in-jar guidebook or config values for it. I can't confirm the milestone thresholds, the hearts per milestone, or the minimum food value used here.
How does Spice of Life: Carrot Edition work?
6 parts
Spice of Life: Carrot Edition has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids to learn about. At least, none of that appears in the sources I have. It is a food-variety system: you eat different foods, and your max health grows. Everything below is how it behaves in this pack.[3][4]
How progression works
The mod tracks how many unique foods you have eaten. You start with the number of hearts set by milestones.baseHearts, which is 10 here, the same as the mod default. Each time your unique-food count reaches a milestone, you gain extra hearts.[4]
The milestones are set by milestones.milestones. In this pack they are 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 unique foods. Each milestone gives you the number of hearts from milestones.heartsPerMilestone. The pack changed that from the mod default of 2 down to 1, so you earn less per milestone than you would in a default install.[4]
Once you reach the highest milestone, the mod tells you that you can't gain any more health from trying new foods. Before that, it tells you how many more unique foods you need for the next increase.[3]
Which foods count
Not every food counts. filtering.minimumFoodValue sets the minimum hunger value a food must give, measured in half drumsticks. The pack raised it from the mod default of 1 to 8. Cheap foods that don't restore enough hunger won't help your milestones.[4]
Hover over a food to see how it counts. A food that isn't nourishing enough is marked as unable to improve your health. Foods that do count show whether you have eaten them yet, and an eaten one is marked as having assisted in adding hearts.[3]
Blacklist and whitelist
- filtering.blacklist is empty in this pack. Foods placed on it won't affect your health and won't show up in the Food Book.[4]
- filtering.whitelist is also empty. If it ever contains anything, the blacklist is ignored and only the foods on the whitelist count.[4]
- A food's tooltip tells you when it can't improve your health because it is blacklisted, or because it isn't on the whitelist.[3]
Death and game modes
miscellaneous.limitProgressionToSurvival is false here. Eating foods outside survival mode, such as in creative or adventure, is therefore not blocked from tracking.[4]
The Food Book
The Food Book is where you check your progress. Its tooltips show how many hearts you gain per milestone and how many more foods you need for the next one, or tell you when you've hit the highest milestone. It also shows how many of the foods are nourishing enough to improve your health, how many of the cheap ones you've eaten, and how many foods the blacklist and whitelist affect.[3][5]
With miscellaneous.shouldShowUneatenFoods on, which it is in this pack, the book also lists foods you haven't eaten yet, not just the ones you have.[6]
Client-side feedback options
These are options from the pack's client config, and each one listed below is set to true.[6]
- [[config:config/solcarrot-client.toml#milestone celebration.shouldPlayMilestoneSounds]]: reaching a new milestone plays a ding sound.[6]
- [[config:config/solcarrot-client.toml#milestone celebration.shouldSpawnMilestoneParticles]]: reaching a new milestone spawns particles.[6]
- [[config:config/solcarrot-client.toml#milestone celebration.shouldSpawnIntermediateParticles]]: trying a new food spawns particles.[6]
- miscellaneous.isFoodTooltipEnabled: foods show in their tooltips whether you have eaten them.[6]
- miscellaneous.shouldShowProgressAboveHotbar: milestone messages appear above the hotbar. Turn it off and they go to chat instead.[6]
Unverified The sources don't say anything about machines, multiblocks, power, fluid handling or automation for this mod, and there is no guidebook or documentation to check against. Whether food automation, such as feeding foods through other mods' devices, counts toward milestones is unconfirmed.
How do you progress through Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
The sources here don't show a tier ladder for Spice of Life: Carrot Edition in this pack. The only in-pack recipe they confirm for the mod is the Food Book, so that's the one crafting step to know about.[2]
The Food Book is a shapeless recipe, so you can place its ingredients anywhere on the crafting grid. Here's the exact in-pack recipe:[2]
Which Spice of Life: Carrot Edition config options matter?
3 parts
Most of Spice of Life: Carrot Edition works the way the mod ships, but this pack changes two server values that noticeably affect how you progress. Here's what matters and exactly how the pack sets it.[4]
Values the pack changed
- filtering.minimumFoodValue is 8 in this pack, up from the mod default of 1. It is measured in half drumsticks, so a food has to restore at least 8 of them to count towards milestones.[4]
- milestones.heartsPerMilestone is 1 in this pack, down from the mod default of 2. Each milestone you reach gives you fewer hearts than the mod normally would.[4]
Progression settings
- milestones.baseHearts is 10, which is the mod default. That's how many hearts you start with.[4]
- milestones.milestones is set to 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50. Each number is how many unique foods you need to eat to unlock that milestone.[4]
- miscellaneous.limitProgressionToSurvival is false, so eating in other game modes such as creative or adventure is still tracked.[4]
- filtering.blacklist and filtering.whitelist are both empty. If you ever put anything in the whitelist, the blacklist is ignored and only foods from the whitelist count.[4]
Client settings
All the client options are turned on in this pack. These only change what you see and hear on your own screen.[6]
- [[config:config/solcarrot-client.toml#milestone celebration.shouldPlayMilestoneSounds]] plays a ding when you reach a new milestone.[6]
- [[config:config/solcarrot-client.toml#milestone celebration.shouldSpawnMilestoneParticles]] spawns particles when you reach a milestone, and [[config:config/solcarrot-client.toml#milestone celebration.shouldSpawnIntermediateParticles]] does the same when you try a new food.[6]
- miscellaneous.isFoodTooltipEnabled makes food tooltips show whether you've eaten that food.[6]
- miscellaneous.shouldShowProgressAboveHotbar shows milestone messages above the hotbar instead of in chat.[6]
- miscellaneous.shouldShowUneatenFoods makes the food book list foods you haven't eaten yet as well as the ones you have.[6]
