What is Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?

Spice of Life: Carrot Edition is part of this pack, and this version ships with mod version 1.16.5 (the file is solcarrot-1.21.1-1.16.5.jar). It has been in the pack since version 1.22 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the modlist rather than a recent addition.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what the mod does in this pack, so I can't confirm its mechanics, config values, or who it suits best. I'm leaving those out rather than guessing, and they'll be added once they can be checked against the pack's files.

Unverified I couldn't confirm any place for this mod in the pack's progression, including the ATM Star path. No quests or recipes for it were available to check.

How do you get started with Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: getting started with Spice of Life: Carrot Edition in this pack is a one-item job. The first thing you make is the Food Book. Everything else comes from eating, so the sooner you have it, the sooner your meals start counting.[2][3]

Step 1: Craft the Food Book

The Food Book is a shapeless recipe added by the mod, and the pack's recipe dump shows no other recipe for it. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[2]

Step 2: Eat a variety of foods

The mod tracks how many unique foods you have eaten. Reaching milestones can increase your max health, and the Food Book's stats show how many more foods you need until the next one. Once you reach the highest milestone, it tells you so, and you can't gain more health from trying new foods.[3]

The stats also show how many hearts each milestone gives. The exact milestone sizes aren't in the sources I have, so check your own Food Book for the numbers.[3]

Then read your food tooltips

Food tooltips tell you whether a food will help. A food you haven't tried yet is marked as not yet eaten, and one you've already eaten is marked as having assisted in adding hearts.[3]

  • Cheap foods aren't nourishing enough to improve your health, so eating them has no noticeable effect. The Food Book has a minimum hunger value that foods must provide to count towards milestones.[3]
  • Foods on the blacklist can't improve your health.[3]
  • If a whitelist is in use, foods that aren't on it can't improve your health either.[3]
Tip: Before you eat something special, check its tooltip. It's best to spend a new food on a meal that counts, not on a cheap, blacklisted or non-whitelisted food that gives no benefit.[3]

Unverified This pack has no quests for this mod, and I have no in-jar guidebook or config values for it. I can't confirm the milestone thresholds, the hearts per milestone, or the minimum food value used here.

How does Spice of Life: Carrot Edition work?

4 parts

Spice of Life: Carrot Edition works by tracking which unique foods you have eaten. As you try more of them, you reach milestones and your max health goes up. The sources for this pack describe only that system, so this section covers it in full.[3][4]

Unverified The sources say nothing about machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation for this mod, so none of that is covered here.

Milestones and hearts

You start with the number of hearts set in milestones.baseHearts, which is 10 here, the same as the mod default. The list in milestones.milestones sets how many unique foods you must eat to unlock each milestone. This pack uses 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50.[4]

Each milestone you reach gives you the number of hearts in milestones.heartsPerMilestone. The pack changed this to 1 from the mod default of 2, so you earn health more slowly than in a stock install of the mod. Adding more milestones to the list would let you earn more hearts, but the pack ships with the five above.[4]

Once you reach the last milestone, the game tells you that you can't gain any more health from trying new foods. Until then, it tells you how many more unique foods you need for the next increase.[3]

Which foods count

A food only counts if it is nourishing enough. filtering.minimumFoodValue sets the minimum hunger value, measured in half drumsticks. The pack raised it to 8 from the mod default of 1, so small snacks no longer count. Foods below the threshold are tagged in their tooltip as not nourishing enough to improve your health, and eating them has no noticeable effect.[3][4]

Two lists let you override this. Foods in filtering.blacklist won't affect your health and won't show up in the food book. If filtering.whitelist contains anything, the blacklist is ignored and only the whitelisted foods count. Both lists are empty in this pack, so every food that meets the minimum value counts.[4]

Food tooltips tell you where each food stands. A hearty food you haven't tried shows a prompt to taste it, and one you've eaten shows that it helped add hearts. Foods blocked by the blacklist or missing from the whitelist say so, and eating them has no noticeable effect.[3]

The Food Book

The Food Book is where you track your progress. Its stats show how many hearts each milestone gives and how many more foods you need for the next one, or tell you that you've reached the highest milestone. Its config tooltips also show how many foods are nourishing enough to improve your health and how many of those you've eaten. They report the same for the foods that aren't nourishing enough, and give the counts for the blacklist and whitelist.[3]

Progression rules

Watch out: Because the food list resets on death, dying costs you all your bonus hearts and you start your unique-food count over. Be careful once you've built up some milestones.[4]

How do you progress through Spice of Life: Carrot Edition?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

The sources here don't show a tier ladder for Spice of Life: Carrot Edition in this pack. The only in-pack recipe they confirm for the mod is the Food Book, so that's the one crafting step to know about.[2]

The Food Book is a shapeless recipe, so you can place its ingredients anywhere on the crafting grid. Here's the exact in-pack recipe:[2]

Which Spice of Life: Carrot Edition config options matter?

4 parts

Everything here lives in the server config, so it applies to the whole world. The pack changed two values from the mod's defaults, and both make the food-to-hearts grind noticeably stricter. Here's what to know before you start eating.[4]

What the pack changed

  • filtering.minimumFoodValue is 8 in this pack (mod default: 1). A food only counts toward milestones if it restores at least that much hunger, measured in half drumsticks. Snack-tier foods that count with the default won't count here, so check what you're eating.[4]
  • milestones.heartsPerMilestone is 1 in this pack (mod default: 2). Each milestone you reach gives you 1 heart instead of 2.[4]

Milestones and starting health

milestones.baseHearts is 10, which matches the mod default, so you start with the usual 10 hearts. milestones.milestones is set to 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50. Those are the numbers of unique foods you need to have eaten to unlock each milestone. The mod notes that adding more milestones lets you earn more hearts, but the pack leaves the list as it is.[4]

Filtering

Both filtering.blacklist and filtering.whitelist are empty in this pack. Foods on the blacklist wouldn't affect your health or show up in the food book. If the whitelist contained anything, the blacklist would be ignored and only foods from the whitelist would count. With both empty, the only filter is the minimum food value above.[4]

Death and game modes

Watch out: Because resetOnDeath is on, dying wipes your food list and your bonus hearts. Be careful once you've climbed a few milestones, especially with the pack's higher minimum food value making each unique food harder to count.[4]
