What is Simple Weather?

Simple Weather is part of the pack's mod list. This version of the pack ships Simple Weather 1.0.13, and the mod has been in the pack since version 0.32 or earlier.[1]

That is all I can confirm for this page. I have no source describing what the mod does in this pack, so I won't guess at its features, settings or recipes. Once there is something verifiable, this section can grow.[1]

Unverified The available sources don't confirm what Simple Weather does, who it suits best, or where it fits in the pack's progression. They also don't show any quests that involve it or a place for it on the ATM Star path.

How do you get started with Simple Weather?

1 part

Simple Weather changes how rain and snow look on your screen. The language file I have for this pack shows it as a set of client-side visual settings, not something you craft or build, so there is no first-items list to follow here.[2]

The mod's language file lists a weather override toggle, a group called Rain Settings and a group called Snow Settings. It also lists a particle count option for normal weather and a separate one for thunderstorms.[2]

What you can tweak

  • Rain Settings: Full Biome Lookup, Collision Particles Chance, Color Blending Frequency, Lifespan, Alpha, Scale, Turbulence, Range and Calculate AABB.[2]
  • Snow Settings: Lifespan, Outer Range, Alpha, Scale and Range.[2]
  • Particle Count, and a separate Particle Count in Thunderstorm.[2]

Unverified The sources here do not show any in-pack recipes, quests or config files for Simple Weather, so I can't give you a crafting order or say what values these settings have in this pack.

How does Simple Weather work?

4 parts

The sources for Simple Weather describe no machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item handling. What they do show is a set of client-side settings for how rain and snow look and how many weather particles are drawn, so this section covers those.[2]

Weather override toggle

The mod has a client option for overriding the weather, shown on screen as "Enabled". The sources give no more detail on exactly what it changes.[2]

Rain Settings

Rain has its own group of client options. Each one is listed below under the name the settings screen gives it.[2]

  • Full Biome Lookup[2]
  • Collision Particles Chance[2]
  • Color Blending Frequency[2]
  • Lifespan[2]
  • Alpha[2]
  • Scale[2]
  • Turbulence[2]
  • Range[2]
  • Calculate AABB[2]

From the names alone, the rain particles can be tuned for size, transparency, lifespan, range and turbulence. There is also a chance setting for collision particles and a setting for color blending frequency. The sources do not give default values, ranges or the exact effect of each option.[2]

Snow Settings

Snow has a smaller group of client options, and it includes an Outer Range setting that the rain group does not list.[2]

Particle counts

Particle Count sets how many weather particles are drawn, and a separate option, Particle Count in Thunderstorm, covers thunderstorms. That means thunderstorms can use a different particle count from ordinary weather.[2]

Tip: All of these are client settings, so they change how weather looks on your own game. The sources do not show their defaults or their effect on performance, so if you tweak the particle count or range options, change them gradually and see how it looks.[2]

Unverified The sources here show no config files for this mod in the pack, so default values, allowed ranges and any pack-specific changes to these options are unverified. No recipes, quests or worldgen for Simple Weather were found either.

Which Simple Weather config options matter?

3 parts

Everything for Simple Weather lives in one client-side file, config/simple_weather-client.toml. Good news: at the moment, for every option where the file lists a mod default, this pack uses exactly that default. As far as these sources show, the pack hasn't changed any of them, so you're seeing the mod's stock look and particle budget.[3]

Particle counts and range

As the file describes them at the moment, these options decide how much weather gets drawn, so they are the ones to touch first if you want to trade looks for frame rate, or the other way around.[3]

  • At the moment, weather_particle_count is 4,500 (same as the mod default, range 100 to 20,000). It's how many particles get a chance to spawn per tick, and Minecraft's own particle settings affect it too. Rain and snow share this one value because of the way the loop works at the moment.[3]
  • At the moment, weather_particle_thunder_count is 7,875 (same as the mod default, range 100 to 20,000). It's the same idea, but during thunderstorms.[3]
  • At the moment, Rain.rain_range is 22 (default, range 5 to 64). It sets how far from you rain particles spawn.[3]
  • At the moment, Snow.snow_range is 12 and Snow.snow_outer_range is 16. Both are the mod defaults, with a range of 5 to 64. The outer range controls the secondary layer of snow particles.[3]
Tip: According to the file's notes at the moment, lowering the rain or snow range packs the particles closer to you, so the weather gets denser as long as the weather amount stays the same.[3]

How the weather looks

On/off switches

  • At the moment, override_weather is true. This is the option that gives you the alternative weather rendering.[3]
  • At the moment, Rain.rain_random is true, so rain gets a slight random look instead of falling perfectly straight down.[3]
  • At the moment, Rain.full_biome_lookup is true. The file says it's provided purely as an option and is highly likely not to change performance in any noticeable way.[3]
  • At the moment, Rain.use_cached_aabb is true. It trades memory for performance in the check that decides whether a raindrop renders, and the file notes that, at the moment, neither option is known to be better by default.[3]
