What is Simple Weather?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

Simple Weather is part of the pack's mod list. This version of the pack ships Simple Weather 1.0.13, and the mod has been in the pack since version 0.32 or earlier.[1]

That is all I can confirm for this page. I have no source describing what the mod does in this pack, so I won't guess at its features, settings or recipes. Once there is something verifiable, this section can grow.[1]

Unverified The available sources don't confirm what Simple Weather does, who it suits best, or where it fits in the pack's progression. They also don't show any quests that involve it or a place for it on the ATM Star path.

How do you get started with Simple Weather?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

Simple Weather changes how rain and snow look on your screen. The language file I have for this pack shows it as a set of client-side visual settings, not something you craft or build, so there is no first-items list to follow here.[2]

The mod's language file lists a weather override toggle, a group called Rain Settings and a group called Snow Settings. It also lists a particle count option for normal weather and a separate one for thunderstorms.[2]

What you can tweak

  • Rain Settings: Full Biome Lookup, Collision Particles Chance, Color Blending Frequency, Lifespan, Alpha, Scale, Turbulence, Range and Calculate AABB.[2]
  • Snow Settings: Lifespan, Outer Range, Alpha, Scale and Range.[2]
  • Particle Count, and a separate Particle Count in Thunderstorm.[2]

Unverified The sources here do not show any in-pack recipes, quests or config files for Simple Weather, so I can't give you a crafting order or say what values these settings have in this pack.

How does Simple Weather work?

4 parts

Simple Weather is documented here only through its client config file, so this section covers how the mod's weather rendering is tuned. Nothing in the available material describes machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation for this mod.[3]

Unverified Whether Simple Weather adds any machines, multiblocks, power, fluid or item handling is not confirmed by the available sources, so none are described here.

The main switch

The pack sets override_weather to true. The config describes it as an alternative render to weather. The rain and snow options below are listed in the same file.[3]

Particle counts

weather_particle_count sets how many particles have a chance to spawn in a given tick. The pack uses 4,500, which matches the mod default, and the allowed range is 100 to 20,000. The config notes that Minecraft's in-game options also affect this, so keep that in mind if you change it. Rain and snow share this one value because of the way the mod's loop works.[3]

weather_particle_thunder_count does the same job during thunderstorms. The pack uses 7,875, which is also the mod default, with the same 100 to 20,000 range.[3]

Rain settings

Every rain value in this pack matches the mod default. These are the options you can adjust:[3]

  • Rain.rain_range is how far from you rain particles spawn. It is 22 in the pack, with a range of 5 to 64. Lowering it increases density if the weather amount is unchanged.[3]
  • Rain.rain_lifetime is how long a rain particle can live without hitting the ground. It is 70, with a range of 10 to 120.[3]
  • Rain.rain_particle_scale is the base size of the rain particle. It is 1.65, with a range of 0.1 to 4.0.[3]
  • Rain.rain_particle_alpha is the opacity of rain particles. It is 0.8, with a range of 0.2 to 1.0, where 1 is fully opaque.[3]
  • Rain.rain_collision_percent controls how often a rain particle can collide with the ground. It is 100, with a range of 0 to 100.[3]
  • Rain.rain_color_blending_frequency controls how often rain particles try to take on the biome's color. It is 4, with a range of 0 to 20, and 0 turns it off.[3]
  • Rain.rain_random is true in the pack. It decides whether rain falls straight down or has a slight random appearance.[3]
  • Rain.full_biome_lookup is true in the pack. The config says it is provided purely as an option and is highly likely not to change performance noticeably.[3]
  • Rain.use_cached_aabb is true in the pack. It trades memory for performance in the check that decides whether a raindrop should render. The config says it is not known which option is better by default.[3]

Snow settings

  • Snow.snow_range is how far from you snow particles spawn. It is 12, with a range of 5 to 64.[3]
  • Snow.snow_outer_range is how far out the secondary layer of snow particles spawns. It is 16, with a range of 5 to 64. Lowering it increases density if the weather amount is unchanged.[3]
  • Snow.snow_lifetime is how long a snow particle can live without hitting the ground. It is 30, with a range of 10 to 100.[3]
  • Snow.snow_particle_alpha is snow opacity. It is 1, which is fully opaque, with a range of 0.2 to 1.0.[3]
  • Snow.snow_particle_scale is the base size of the snow particle. It is 1.399999976158142 in the pack, with a range of 0.1 to 4.0.[3]

The config file flags the snow scale as changed by the pack, but the listed mod default is 1.4. The pack's value is that same number with floating-point rounding, so you won't see any practical difference.[3]

Tip: If weather effects cost you frames, the particle count options and the range options are the main settings to look at. Lowering a range increases density if the weather amount is unchanged, so check how it looks after changing it.[3]

Which Simple Weather config options matter?

5 parts

Simple Weather is configured through a single client-side file, config/simple_weather-client.toml. Almost everything in it matches the mod's defaults in this pack, so you don't need to fix anything to get the intended look. Here are the options you're most likely to tweak.[3]

The one value the pack flags as changed

The only option the pack marks as changed is Snow.snow_particle_scale. It's set to 1.399999976158142 against a mod default of 1.4, with an allowed range of 0.1 to 4.0. That's a tiny difference, so snow looks essentially the same as in the mod's default setup.[3]

Turning the effect on and tuning density

  • override_weather is true. It's described as an alternative render to weather, so this is the switch for the mod's custom rain and snow.[3]
  • weather_particle_count is 4500 (the mod default, range 100 to 20,000). It sets how many particles get a chance to spawn per tick, and it is shared by rain and snow.[3]
  • weather_particle_thunder_count is 7875 (the mod default, same range). It works like the normal count but applies during thunderstorms.[3]
  • Rain.rain_range is 22 (range 5 to 64). It controls how far from you rain particles spawn. Lowering it makes rain denser if the weather amount isn't changed.[3]
  • Snow.snow_range is 12 and Snow.snow_outer_range is 16 (both range 5 to 64). The outer range is for the secondary layer of snow particles, and lowering either one makes snow denser.[3]
Watch out: The particle counts are also affected by Minecraft's own in-game options, so keep that in mind if you change them.[3]

How the weather looks

Particle lifetime and collisions

Rain.use_cached_aabb is true. It trades memory for performance on the check that decides whether a raindrop should render, and the config notes that it isn't known which setting is better by default. Rain.full_biome_lookup is also true, but the config says it is highly unlikely to change performance in any noticeable way.[3]
