What is Simple Weather?

Simple Weather is part of this pack, which ships version 1.0.7 of the mod (simple_weather-1.0.7.jar). It has been in the pack since 0.32 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the mod list and not a recent addition.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what Simple Weather does in gameplay terms, so I can't tell you its features, who it suits best, or how it fits into the pack's progression. No quests, in-game guidebook or platform description were available to confirm any of that. I also can't confirm whether the pack changes any of the mod's configs or recipes, so check in-game before relying on mod defaults. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

How do you get started with Simple Weather?

1 part

Good news: Simple Weather needs no setup from you. The only thing the mod's own text shows is a set of client settings for how rain and snow look, with no items or machines to craft first.[2]

That means there is no crafting order to follow and no recipe block to show. If you came looking for a first item to make, you can skip ahead to another mod's section.[2]

What you can tweak

The mod's settings are all client-side, so they only change what you see on your own screen. They are split into a few groups, listed below.[2]

  • Rain Settings: options such as Range, Lifespan, Scale, Alpha, Turbulence, Collision Particles Chance, Color Blending Frequency, Full Biome Lookup and Calculate AABB.[2]
  • Snow Settings: options such as Range, Outer Range, Lifespan, Scale and Alpha.[2]
  • Particle Count, plus a separate Particle Count in Thunderstorm, which sets how many weather particles appear during storms.[2]
  • An Enabled toggle labelled as the weather override option.[2]
Tip: If weather effects hurt your frame rate, the particle count and range options are the natural ones to look at first, since they control how many weather particles are drawn and how far away.[2]

Unverified The default values for these options, the exact config file they are saved in, and whether the pack changes any of them could not be confirmed from the available sources.

How does Simple Weather work?

4 parts

Simple Weather doesn't have machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation that the sources describe. What the mod's own language file does show is a set of client-side settings for how rain and snow are drawn, so this section covers those.[2]

Weather override

The settings list includes an "Enabled" toggle for the weather override. The language file doesn't explain exactly what it replaces.[2]

Rain settings

Rain has its own group, called "Rain Settings". These are the options in it, by their on-screen names:[2]

  • Full Biome Lookup[2]
  • Collision Particles Chance[2]
  • Color Blending Frequency[2]
  • Lifespan[2]
  • Alpha[2]
  • Scale[2]
  • Turbulence[2]
  • Range[2]
  • Calculate AABB[2]

From the names, rain is drawn with particles. You can change how long they last, how big and see-through they are, how much they wander, and how far from you they appear. There is also a chance setting for collision particles, and a setting for how often the rain color blends.[2]

Snow settings

Snow has a separate "Snow Settings" group with fewer options:[2]

Particle counts

Some general settings sit outside the rain and snow groups: "Particle Count" and "Particle Count in Thunderstorm". So thunderstorms have their own particle count, separate from normal weather.[2]

Tip: If weather effects cost you frames, the particle count settings and the range settings are the obvious ones to look at first. That's my reading of their names, since the language file only gives labels and no descriptions.[2]

Unverified The values this pack uses for these settings, and the config file they are stored in, are not shown in the sources available here.

Which Simple Weather config options matter?

4 parts

Simple Weather is configured through the client config file in this pack, config/simple_weather-client.toml. Everything below is how the pack sets it. The options are split into general, Rain and Snow groups. The file's own comments hedge on two points with "at the moment": why rain and snow share a particle count, and which Rain.use_cached_aabb setting is better. Both are covered below.[3]

Particle counts

  • weather_particle_count is 4,500 (allowed range 100 to 20,000). It is how many particles will have a chance to spawn in a given tick. Minecraft's in-game options affect it too, so keep that in mind if you change it.[3]
  • weather_particle_thunder_count is 7,875 (same range). It is the same as the normal count, but during thunderstorms.[3]
  • The count is shared by rain and snow. The config file explains this by the way the loop works at the moment, so the mod does not run separate large loops.[3]
Tip: The particle counts are where to look if you want fewer weather particles spawning each tick. The range options below also change how dense the weather looks, so check the note after them before touching them.[3]

Weather render and range

  • override_weather is true. The config file describes it as an alternative render to weather.[3]
  • Rain.rain_range is 22 (range 5 to 64). It sets how far from the player rain particles spawn.[3]
  • Snow.snow_range is 12 and Snow.snow_outer_range is 16 (both range 5 to 64). The first is how far from the player snow particles spawn, and the second is for the secondary layer of snow particles.[3]
Watch out: Lowering a range will increase the density if the weather amount is not changed, according to the config file's comments on the rain range, snow range and snow outer range options.[3]

Look and feel

Performance toggles

  • Rain.use_cached_aabb is true. It trades memory for performance in the calculation done at the start of a rain droplet that decides whether the particle should render. At the moment, the config file says neither option is known to be better by default.[3]
  • Rain.full_biome_lookup is true. The config file says it is provided purely as an option and is highly likely not to change any noticeable performance.[3]
