What is Not Enough Glyphs?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Not Enough Glyphs (NEG for short) is a spellcasting addon that repacks popular utility glyphs from older addons and adds a few of its own. It also adds the SpellBinder, an alternative to the spellbook. If you like building spells and want more variety, this mod is for you.[1]

This pack ships Not Enough Glyphs 4.6.1 for Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[2]

New glyphs

  • Trail is an echoing projectile. It resolves the spell along its path several times before it expires, like a lingering version of a projectile.[1]
  • Plow lets you till dirt and do other hoe jobs. It is the glyph missing from the "Spellbook of all trades" set.[1]
  • Plane is a non-repeating version of linger. Use it to make the next spell area-of-effect, or to shape circles, cylinders and hollow squares.[1]
  • Contingencies store the spell that follows them and cast it when their condition happens. Mana is only spent on the first cast, and only one contingency can be active at a time. For example, Contingency Death followed by Explode blows up the target if it dies while the effect is still on it.[1]

The SpellBinder

The SpellBinder holds up to 25 spells as caster tomes or spell parchments. You can't craft spells on the fly with it, so it suits spells you won't edit again, or spells you want to share without handing over a whole book.[1]

It also accepts threads. Dedicated book threads, called book covers, fill those slots. They include focus covers, a Randomize thread, the Slow Power and Cheap Damage tradeoff pair, and the Sharp Pages and Hard Cover pair that turn the binder into a melee weapon.[1]

Repacked glyphs

NEG also repacks glyphs from other addons, including TooManyGlyphs, Omega, Elemental and Trinkets. Those copies disable themselves if the original addon is installed.[1]

Unverified No quests, in-jar guidebook or ATM Star path entries for this mod were found, so where it fits in the pack's progression is unconfirmed.

How do you get started with Not Enough Glyphs?

4 parts

Not Enough Glyphs brings back utility glyphs from older addons, adds a few brand new ones, and introduces the Spell Binder, an alternative to the spellbook for holding finished spells. Its glyphs use Ars Nouveau's glyph recipe type, so you'll get more out of it once your Ars Nouveau setup is running. Here's a sensible order to pick things up in this pack.[1][3]

Step 1: Grab the simple utility glyphs

Start with Glyph Plow. It's the glyph that was missing from the "Spellbook of all trades" set, and it lets your spells plow dirt and do other hoe jobs. That's handy for farming with magic right away.[1]

Next, pick up Glyph Filter Light and Glyph Filter Dark. They're part of the set of filter glyphs this mod repacks, and both are glyph recipes in this pack.[1][3]

Unverified The sources don't describe exactly what the Light and Dark filters check for, so test them in a spell before you rely on them.

Step 2: Set up contingencies

Contingencies are inspired by Ars Magica. A contingency stores the part of the spell that comes after it for the duration of the effect, then casts it when its condition happens. You only pay mana on the first cast. For example, Contingency Death followed by Explode causes an explosion on the target if it dies while the effect is still on it.[1]

Watch out: Only one contingency can be active at a time, so choose the one that matters most for what you're doing.[1]

Augments tweak contingencies. Split adds one more activation before the contingency ends, and Extend Time makes the effect last longer. On Glyph Contingency Fall, Amplify raises the fall needed to trigger it by one block. On Glyph Contingency Health, Amplify raises the health threshold by 10%.[4]

There are seven contingency glyphs in total. Alongside Death, Fall and Health, there are Glyph Contingency Blink, Glyph Contingency Fire, Glyph Contingency Heal and Glyph Contingency Time.[3]

Step 3: Build a Spell Binder

Once you have spells you're happy with, make a Spell Binder in the Enchanting Apparatus. You can't craft spells on the fly with it. Instead, it holds up to 25 spells as caster tomes or spell parchments. That makes it perfect for spells you'll never edit, or for sharing spells without handing over a whole book.[1][3]

You can also dye your binder if you want a different look.[3]

Watch out: The binder accepts threads, but threads made for Ars armor aren't guaranteed to work in it and might be patched out. Use the dedicated book threads, called book covers, to fill those slots.[1]

Later: Plane and Trail

Glyph Propagate Plane is a non-repeating version of Linger. You can use it to give area effect to spells that don't support it directly, or to shape circles, cylinders and hollow squares. This pack changed its recipe, so check the in-pack version below rather than the mod's default.[1][3]

Glyph Trail is an echoing projectile that resolves your spell along its trail a few times before it expires, a bit like a lingering version of Projectile.[1]

How does Not Enough Glyphs work?

6 parts

Not Enough Glyphs is a spell addon, so there are no machines, power or pipes to learn here. Everything runs through the Ars Nouveau spell system: you craft new glyphs to use in your spells, and you get the Spell Binder, a new way to carry finished spells around.[1][3]

The mod bundles glyphs from several older addons (Too Many Glyphs, Omega and Elemental, plus the Self and Not Self filters from Trinkets) together with some brand new ones. The repacked glyphs switch themselves off if the original addon is also installed, and that includes any custom behaviour they had.[1]

Unverified The sources don't say which of those original addons, if any, are installed in this pack. That means they can't confirm which version of each repacked glyph you'll actually be using.

Contingencies: spells that wait for a trigger

Contingencies are the headline mechanic. A contingency glyph stores the rest of the spell that comes after it. It keeps that spell for as long as the effect lasts, then casts it when its condition happens. You only pay mana on the first cast, so the stored spell fires for free. For example, Contingency Death followed by Explode will blow up the target if it dies while the effect is still on it.[1]

Watch out: Only one contingency can be active at a time, so choose the trigger that matters most for what you're doing.[1]

The pack includes seven contingency glyphs: Glyph Contingency Blink, Glyph Contingency Death, Glyph Contingency Fall, Glyph Contingency Fire, Glyph Contingency Heal, Glyph Contingency Health and Glyph Contingency Time. Each one is a standard glyph recipe.[3]

Glyph (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: not_enough_glyphs:glyph_contingency_death

The other contingencies follow the same pattern, each with its own trigger item.

You tune contingencies with augments, and they all share a few behaviours:[4]

  • Split adds one more activation before the contingency ends, so it can trigger several times.[4]
  • Extend Time makes the effect last longer, and Duration Down makes it shorter.[4]
  • On most contingencies, Amplify raises the level of the effect.[4]
  • On the Fall contingency, Amplify raises the fall distance needed to trigger by one block, and Dampen lowers it by one block.[4]
  • On the Health contingency, Amplify raises the health threshold by 10%.[4]

Unverified The sources don't spell out the exact trigger condition for each contingency except Death, or what the base Fall distance and Health threshold are. Test them in-game before you rely on them.

Plane: instant area shapes

Glyph Propagate Plane works like a version of Linger that doesn't repeat. It spreads the rest of the spell over an area, so you can give area effect to spells that don't normally support it. You can also use it to make circles, cylinders and hollow squares.[1]

  • AOE makes the plane wider.[4]
  • Pierce makes the plane deeper.[4]
  • Dampen makes the plane hollow.[4]
  • Sensitive makes the plane circular.[4]
  • Randomize drops out random blocks.[4]
Watch out: This pack has changed the Plane glyph's recipe, so check the in-pack version below instead of an older guide or video.[3]

Trail and Plow

Glyph Trail is an echoing projectile form. It resolves your spell along its trail several times before it expires, much like a lingering version of Projectile.[1]

Glyph Plow is the missing piece of the Spellbook of all trades set. It tills dirt and does the other things a hoe does, and the AOE augment increases its area of effect.[1][4]

Propagators and bonus projectiles

The Arc and Homing projectile forms come from Elemental. Arc projectiles are affected by gravity, and each Pierce makes them bounce once when they hit the ground. Homing projectiles seek out the nearest entity and act like a normal projectile when there's no valid target. They only target players if you add Sensitive.[1][4]

Propagators turn the rest of your spell into a new form wherever the first part lands. For example, the Arc and Homing propagators fire a fresh projectile from that spot. The homing version aims it where the caster is looking. On the propagators, the Extract augment makes the projectile's direction relative to the caster's position.[4]

Filters

The pack also includes the light and dark filter glyphs, Glyph Filter Light and Glyph Filter Dark. Both are simple glyph recipes.[3]

Unverified The sources don't describe exactly what the light and dark filters check for, so their filtering rules can't be confirmed here.

The Spell Binder

The Spell Binder is an alternative to the spellbook. You can't craft or edit spells on the fly with it, but it holds up to 25 spells stored as caster tomes or spell parchments. That makes it perfect for spells you'll never change, or for sharing spells without handing over a whole book. You make it in the Enchanting Apparatus, and a second recipe lets you dye it.[1][3]

Dye (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: not_enough_glyphs:dye_binder

Recolours an existing Spell Binder.

Like Ars armor, the binder has thread slots. The mod adds dedicated book threads for these slots, called book covers:[1]

  • Focus covers (Shapers or Summoning, or the Elemental ones if Ars Elemental is loaded) let spells cast from the binder trigger glyph combos. They don't give you the extra stats, though.[1]
  • The Randomize thread gives every glyph in the spell a random buff or debuff.[1]
  • Slow Power slows your spells down in exchange for a spell power buff. Cheap Damage makes spells much cheaper but very weak.[1]
  • Sharp Pages and Hard Cover turn the binder into a melee weapon by giving it attack damage or knockback.[1]
Watch out: Armor threads do fit in the binder, but they aren't guaranteed to work and might be patched to not work at all. Use the dedicated book covers instead.[1]

How do you progress through Not Enough Glyphs?

4 parts

Not Enough Glyphs doesn't have its own crafting stations. Every item it adds in this pack is made through Ars Nouveau's recipe types. The Spell Binder uses the Enchanting Apparatus and a dye recipe, and every glyph uses Ars Nouveau's glyph recipe type. If you're already making glyphs for your Ars Nouveau spell book, you already know how to unlock these.[3]

The Spell Binder

The Spell Binder is the one non-glyph item here. You craft it in the Enchanting Apparatus, and it starts from a Novice Spell Book, so it's something you can reach early. There's also a dye recipe for it, so you can color it to match your setup.[3]

Low-input glyphs

The filter glyphs have the smallest recipes in the mod, so they're an easy first pick. Glyph Filter Light has just one input, and Glyph Filter Dark adds a black dye to that. Glyph Plow is also a short recipe and needs Earth Essence.[3]

The contingency family

The contingency glyphs are the biggest group in the mod. They all follow the same pattern: each one needs Abjuration Essence and a repeater, plus one extra item that is different for each glyph. Once you're making Abjuration Essence, you can work through the whole set.[3]

Glyph Propagate Plane is the one glyph whose recipe this pack has changed. It needs Manipulation Essence, a Wilden Spike and a diamond storage block, which makes it the priciest glyph in the mod.[3]

Watch out: The pack changed the recipe for Glyph Propagate Plane, so recipes from other guides or videos may be wrong for this pack. Go by the in-pack recipe shown here or in your recipe viewer.[3]

How does Not Enough Glyphs work with other mods?

2 parts

Not Enough Glyphs is an addon built entirely around Ars Nouveau. In this pack, every recipe that links it to other mods goes through Ars Nouveau's crafting systems. The new glyphs use Ars Nouveau's glyph recipes, and the Spell Binder is made on Ars Nouveau's Enchanting Apparatus. If you're already into Ars Nouveau, you have everything you need to start.[3]

Glyphs crafted with Ars Nouveau essences

Each glyph from this mod takes one of Ars Nouveau's elemental essences plus some vanilla items, so you'll want your essence production running. All the contingency glyphs share the same base: an Abjuration Essence and a Repeater, plus one item that matches the trigger.[3]

Contingencies are inspired by Ars Magica. A contingency stores the spell that comes after it for the duration of the effect, then casts that spell when its condition happens. You only pay mana on the first cast. Only one contingency can be active at a time. For example, Contingency Death followed by Explode makes the target explode if it dies while the effect is still on it.[1]

The other contingencies follow the same pattern with a different trigger item.

Glyph Plow lets your spells plow dirt and do other hoe jobs, filling the gap in the "Spellbook of all trades" set. Glyph Trail fires a projectile that resolves your spell along its trail a few times before it expires, like a lingering version of Projectile.[1][3]

Glyph Propagate Plane is a non-repeating version of Linger. It can make the following spell area-of-effect when that spell doesn't support it directly, and it can also shape circles, cylinders and hollow squares. Besides its essence, the recipe also uses an Ars Nouveau Wilden Spike.[1][3]

Watch out: This pack changes the recipe for Glyph Propagate Plane. If a video or another wiki shows a different recipe, trust the one shown here.[3]

The Spell Binder

The Spell Binder is made from an Ars Nouveau Novice Spell Book on the Enchanting Apparatus. It is an alternative to the spellbook. You can't craft spells on the fly with it, but it holds up to 25 spells as caster tomes or spell parchments. That makes it great for spells you'll never edit or for sharing spells without handing over a whole book.[1][3]

Tip: The binder takes threads the same way Ars Nouveau armor does. Armor threads fit in its slots, but they might not work and could be patched out, so use the dedicated book covers made for the binder instead.[1]

What changed in Not Enough Glyphs between versions?

1 part

In All the Mods 10 7.0, the pack ships Not Enough Glyphs version 4.4.0, in the file not_enough_glyphs-1.21.1-4.4.0.jar. The mod has been part of the pack for a long time: it was first included in All the Mods 10 2.11 or earlier.[5]

The pack changelogs only record which version of the mod each release moved to. They don't describe what changed inside the mod, so the timeline below shows version bumps, not feature details.[6][7]

Update timeline

  • All the Mods 10 2.43: updated from 4.0.6 to 4.1.1.[7]
  • All the Mods 10 2.47: updated from 4.1.1 to 4.1.3.[8]
  • All the Mods 10 3.2: updated from 4.1.3 to 4.2.0-pre, a pre-release build.[9]
  • All the Mods 10 4.0: updated from 4.2.0-pre to 4.2.0-pre2.[10]
  • All the Mods 10 4.1: updated from 4.2.0-pre2 to 4.2.0.1, moving off the pre-release builds.[11]

  • All the Mods 10 5.5: updated from 4.2.3.0 to 4.2.4.[16]
  • All the Mods 10 6.0: updated from 4.2.4 to 4.2.8.[17]
  • All the Mods 10 6.2: updated from 4.2.8 to 4.2.9.[18]
  • All the Mods 10 7.0: updated from 4.2.9 to 4.4.0, the version in the current pack.[6]
Tip: The All the Mods 10 7.0 update moved the mod from 4.2.9 to 4.4.0. If a glyph or spell behaves differently than you remember from an older pack version, this update is a good place to start looking.[6]

Unverified The specific changes, new glyphs and fixes in each of these versions are unverified, because none of the mod's own changelogs were available for this guide.
