What is Not Enough Glyphs?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Not Enough Glyphs (NEG for short) is a spellcasting addon that repacks popular utility glyphs from older addons and adds a few of its own. It also adds the SpellBinder, an alternative to the spellbook. If you like building spells and want more variety, this mod is for you.[1]

This pack ships Not Enough Glyphs 4.6.1 for Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[2]

New glyphs

  • Trail is an echoing projectile. It resolves the spell along its path several times before it expires, like a lingering version of a projectile.[1]
  • Plow lets you till dirt and do other hoe jobs. It is the glyph missing from the "Spellbook of all trades" set.[1]
  • Plane is a non-repeating version of linger. Use it to make the next spell area-of-effect, or to shape circles, cylinders and hollow squares.[1]
  • Contingencies store the spell that follows them and cast it when their condition happens. Mana is only spent on the first cast, and only one contingency can be active at a time. For example, Contingency Death followed by Explode blows up the target if it dies while the effect is still on it.[1]

The SpellBinder

The SpellBinder holds up to 25 spells as caster tomes or spell parchments. You can't craft spells on the fly with it, so it suits spells you won't edit again, or spells you want to share without handing over a whole book.[1]

It also accepts threads. Dedicated book threads, called book covers, fill those slots. They include focus covers, a Randomize thread, the Slow Power and Cheap Damage tradeoff pair, and the Sharp Pages and Hard Cover pair that turn the binder into a melee weapon.[1]

Repacked glyphs

NEG also repacks glyphs from other addons, including TooManyGlyphs, Omega, Elemental and Trinkets. Those copies disable themselves if the original addon is installed.[1]

Unverified No quests, in-jar guidebook or ATM Star path entries for this mod were found, so where it fits in the pack's progression is unconfirmed.

How do you get started with Not Enough Glyphs?

5 parts

Not Enough Glyphs adds extra spell glyphs for Ars Nouveau, plus a new way to carry your spells. Here is the order I'd go in, starting with the item that changes how you carry spells.[1][3]

Step one: make the Spell Binder

The Spell Binder is an alternative to the spellbook. It doesn't let you craft spells on the fly, but it can hold up to 25 spells as caster tomes or spell parchments. That makes it great for spells you won't edit again, or for sharing a spell without handing over a whole book. In this pack it's made at the enchanting apparatus.[1][3]

You can also change the colour of your binder with a dye.[3]

Step two: pick up the light and dark filters

Glyph Filter Light and Glyph Filter Dark are both glyph recipes you can check right here. Most of the filters in this mod are repacked from TooManyGlyphs, and repacked glyphs disable themselves if the original addon is installed.[1][3]

Then add Plow

Glyph Plow is the glyph missing from the Spellbook of all trades set. It lets a spell plow dirt and do the other things a hoe does.[1][3]

Then try a contingency

Contingencies store the spell placed after them for the duration of the effect. They cast it when their condition happens, and mana is only spent on the initial cast. Only one contingency can be active at a time. For example, Contingency Death followed by Explode causes an explosion on the target if it dies while the effect is still on it.[1]

Glyph Contingency Fall is a simple one to experiment with. Its augments raise or lower the fall distance before it triggers by one block each.[3][4]

Contingency Death is the one used in the example above.

Finally, Plane and Trail

Glyph Propagate Plane is a non-repeating version of linger. You can use it to make a following spell affect an area, or to shape circles, cylinders and hollow squares.[1][3]

Watch out: The pack changed the recipe for the Plane glyph, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. Check the recipe below before you start gathering materials.[3]

How does Not Enough Glyphs work?

6 parts

Not Enough Glyphs is a spellcasting add-on, so it has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids to wire up. Its systems are new spell glyphs, their augments, and the Spell Binder, an alternative to the spellbook. This section covers how those pieces behave.[1]

The Spell Binder

The Spell Binder holds up to 25 spells, stored as caster tomes or spell parchments. The catch is that it doesn't allow on-the-fly spellcrafting. It suits spells you won't ever edit, and it lets you share a spell without handing over a whole book.[1][3]

In this pack you craft the binder at the enchanting apparatus, not at a crafting table. You can also recolor it with a dye, using a separate dyeing recipe.[3]

Threads and book covers

Like Ars armor, the binder accepts threads. Armor threads fit in the slots, but there's no guarantee they work, and they might be patched out later. The mod adds dedicated book threads, called book covers, to fill those slots.[1]

  • Focus Covers (Shapers or Summoning, or the Elemental ones if the Elemental add-on is loaded) let spells cast from the binder trigger the glyph combos. You don't get the extra stats, but you can get potential trifocus special effects or just more versatility.[1]
  • Randomize Thread gives each glyph in the spell a random buff or debuff.[1]
  • Slow Power and Cheap Damage are a pair of tradeoffs. One slows your spells but boosts spell power. The other makes them a lot cheaper but very weak.[1]
  • Sharp Pages and Hard Cover turn the binder into a melee weapon by adding attack damage or knockback.[1]

Contingencies

Contingencies are inspired by the ones from Ars Magica and are listed as a 1.21.1+ feature. A contingency stores the spell that comes after it for the duration of the effect, then casts it when its condition occurs. Mana is spent only on the initial cast, and only one contingency can be active at a time.[1]

The mod's own example is Contingency Death followed by Explode. If the target dies while the effect is still on it, it explodes.[1]

The pack includes these contingency glyphs: Glyph Contingency Blink, Glyph Contingency Death, Glyph Contingency Fall, Glyph Contingency Fire, Glyph Contingency Heal, Glyph Contingency Health and Glyph Contingency Time. The Death one is shown below as an example.[3]

Glyph (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: not_enough_glyphs:glyph_contingency_death

This is the Death contingency. The other contingency glyphs have their own recipes in the same style.

Tuning contingencies with augments

  • On most contingencies, Amplify raises the level of the effect, Duration Down shortens it and Extend Time lengthens it.[4]
  • Split adds one more possible activation before the contingency ends.[4]
  • On the fall contingency, Amplify raises the fall needed to trigger it by one block and Dampen lowers it by one block.[4]
  • On the health contingency, Amplify raises the health threshold by 10%.[4]

Trail, Plow and Plane

Glyph Trail is the Echoing Projectile glyph. It fires a projectile that resolves the spell along its trail several times before it expires, like a lingering version of the projectile form.[1][3]

Glyph (ars_nouveau)

Glyph Plow fills the gap left by the "Spellbook of all trades" set. It plows dirt and does the other things a hoe does. The Area of Effect augment increases its area.[1][3][4]

Glyph PlowMod recipe

Glyph (ars_nouveau)

Recipe id: not_enough_glyphs:glyph_plow

Glyph Propagate Plane is a non-repeating version of linger. Use it to make the following spell area-of-effect when that spell doesn't support it directly, or to build circles, cylinders and hollow squares.[1][3]

  • Area of Effect increases the width of the plane.[4]
  • Pierce increases its depth.[4]
  • Dampen makes the plane hollow.[4]
  • Sensitive makes the plane circular.[4]
  • Randomize randomly drops out blocks.[4]
Watch out: The pack changes the recipe for the Plane glyph. Use the recipe below.[3]

Repacked glyphs from other add-ons

The mod also repacks glyphs from older add-ons. These disable themselves when the original add-on is present, including any custom behaviors they have. The repacks come from these add-ons:[1]

  • TooManyGlyphs: Ray, Chain, RevDirection and most of the filters.[1]
  • Omega: the propagators based on the vanilla forms, plus Flatten.[1]
  • Elemental: the Arc and Homing projectile forms and their propagators.[1]
  • Trinkets: Filter: Self and Filter: Not Self.[1]

The Homing projectile seeks the nearest entity and follows it. With no valid target it behaves like a classic projectile, and it only targets players if augmented with Sensitive. The Arc projectile is affected by gravity, and each Pierce applied makes it bounce one time when it hits the ground.[4]

The pack also includes light and dark filter glyphs, Glyph Filter Light and Glyph Filter Dark, and each has a glyph recipe.[3]

How do you progress through Not Enough Glyphs?

4 parts

Unverified The sources here show no quests for Not Enough Glyphs in this pack, and no place for it on the ATM Star quest path. Any quest-guided order for the mod is not shown in the sources, so the order below follows the in-pack recipes only.

Every Not Enough Glyphs recipe in this pack is tied into Ars Nouveau. The glyphs use Ars Nouveau's glyph recipe type, and the Spell Binder is made with Ars Nouveau's enchanting apparatus recipe type. The sources don't assign tier numbers to anything in this mod, so I'm grouping things by which essence their recipe uses.[3]

Start with the Spell Binder

The Spell Binder is crafted at the enchanting apparatus from the Novice Spell Book, so you need that book first. Once you have the binder, you can recolor it with a dye.[3]

How does Not Enough Glyphs work with other mods?

2 parts

In this pack, every recipe that connects Not Enough Glyphs with another mod runs through Ars Nouveau. The glyphs and the Spell Binder are made with Ars Nouveau's own crafting methods, using Ars Nouveau materials together with vanilla items.[3]

Glyph recipes

All of the mod's glyphs in the pack use the Ars Nouveau glyph recipe type. Each one combines an Ars Nouveau essence with vanilla items.[3]

The binder is an alternative to the spellbook. It can hold up to 25 spells as caster tomes or spell parchments, but it doesn't allow on-the-fly spellcrafting. It also accepts threads, like Ars Nouveau armor does, and the mod adds dedicated book covers for those slots.[1]

What changed in Not Enough Glyphs between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 4.14 ships Not Enough Glyphs 4.2.2.1. The mod was already in the pack by All the Mods 10 2.11, and the pack changelogs record several version bumps since then.[5]

Version bumps in the pack changelogs

  • All the Mods 10 2.43: updated from 4.0.6 to 4.1.1.[6]
  • All the Mods 10 2.47: updated from 4.1.1 to 4.1.3.[7]
  • All the Mods 10 3.2: updated from 4.1.3 to 4.2.0-pre.[8]
  • All the Mods 10 4.0: updated from 4.2.0-pre to 4.2.0-pre2.[9]
  • All the Mods 10 4.1: updated from 4.2.0-pre2 to 4.2.0.1.[10]
  • All the Mods 10 4.2: updated from 4.2.0.1 to 4.2.1.0.[11]
  • All the Mods 10 4.5: updated from 4.2.1.0 to 4.2.2.0.[12]
  • All the Mods 10 4.11: updated from 4.2.2.0 to 4.2.2.1, the version still in 4.14.[5][13]

Nothing has changed for this mod since 4.11 according to the changelogs I have, so 4.14 uses the same version as that release.[5][13]

Unverified What actually changed inside each Not Enough Glyphs version (new features, fixes, or any behavior differences) is unverified. The pack changelogs only list the version numbers, and there are no stored changelogs for the shipped jars.
