What is Not Enough Glyphs?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Not Enough Glyphs (NEG for short) is a spellcasting addon that repacks popular utility glyphs from older addons and adds a few of its own. It also adds the SpellBinder, an alternative to the spellbook. If you like building spells and want more variety, this mod is for you.[1]

This pack ships Not Enough Glyphs 4.6.1 for Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[2]

New glyphs

  • Trail is an echoing projectile. It resolves the spell along its path several times before it expires, like a lingering version of a projectile.[1]
  • Plow lets you till dirt and do other hoe jobs. It is the glyph missing from the "Spellbook of all trades" set.[1]
  • Plane is a non-repeating version of linger. Use it to make the next spell area-of-effect, or to shape circles, cylinders and hollow squares.[1]
  • Contingencies store the spell that follows them and cast it when their condition happens. Mana is only spent on the first cast, and only one contingency can be active at a time. For example, Contingency Death followed by Explode blows up the target if it dies while the effect is still on it.[1]

The SpellBinder

The SpellBinder holds up to 25 spells as caster tomes or spell parchments. You can't craft spells on the fly with it, so it suits spells you won't edit again, or spells you want to share without handing over a whole book.[1]

It also accepts threads. Dedicated book threads, called book covers, fill those slots. They include focus covers, a Randomize thread, the Slow Power and Cheap Damage tradeoff pair, and the Sharp Pages and Hard Cover pair that turn the binder into a melee weapon.[1]

Repacked glyphs

NEG also repacks glyphs from other addons, including TooManyGlyphs, Omega, Elemental and Trinkets. Those copies disable themselves if the original addon is installed.[1]

Unverified No quests, in-jar guidebook or ATM Star path entries for this mod were found, so where it fits in the pack's progression is unconfirmed.

How do you get started with Not Enough Glyphs?

4 parts

Not Enough Glyphs is an add-on for Ars Nouveau. It brings back utility glyphs from older add-ons, adds a few of its own, and introduces the Spell Binder, a second way to carry your spells. You don't need a big setup to start. Each glyph has its own in-pack recipe, and the Spell Binder is made in the Enchanting Apparatus. Here's a good order to work through it.[1][3]

Step 1: Plow, your farming glyph

Start with Glyph Plow. It's the glyph that was missing from the "Spellbook of all trades" set: it plows dirt and handles other hoe jobs, so your spellbook can till fields for you. Add Amplify-style area augments later. The AoE augment on Plow increases the area of effect, which turns it into a quick field-maker.[1][3][4]

Step 2: Plane, area effects for any spell

Next, grab Glyph Propagate Plane. It works like a non-repeating version of Linger. It can give the rest of your spell an area effect even if that effect doesn't support AoE on its own, and it can shape that area into circles, cylinders or hollow squares. Heads up: this pack changed the Plane recipe, so check the recipe below instead of the one you might remember from elsewhere.[1][3]

Plane gets most of its power from augments. Here's what each one does to it:[4]

  • AoE increases the width of the plane.[4]
  • Pierce increases the depth of the plane.[4]
  • Dampen makes the plane hollow.[4]
  • Sensitive makes the plane circular.[4]
  • Randomize randomly drops out blocks.[4]

Step 3: The Spell Binder

Once you have spells you're happy with, make a Spell Binder. It holds up to 25 spells as caster tomes or spell parchments. That makes it perfect for spells you'll never edit again, or for sharing spells without handing over a whole book. The catch is that you can't do on-the-fly spellcrafting in it, so keep your regular spellbook for building and tweaking spells.[1]

The binder also has thread slots for book covers. These are dedicated threads that add flavour or bonuses, like focus covers, a randomize thread, or covers that turn the binder into a melee weapon. Threads made for Ars armor fit in the binder too, but they aren't guaranteed to work. You can also recolor your binder with any dye.[1][3]

Later: Trail and the filters

When you want to get fancier with projectiles, look at Glyph Trail. It fires a projectile that resolves your spell along its trail a few times before it expires, a bit like a lingering version of Projectile.[1]

How does Not Enough Glyphs work?

7 parts

Not Enough Glyphs is an add-on for Ars Nouveau spellcasting, so there are no machines, multiblocks or power networks here. Its core mechanics are new glyphs you slot into spells and a new casting item, the Spell Binder. Some glyphs are exclusive to this mod, and others are ports of glyphs from older add-ons that were brought forward to newer Minecraft versions, with some features revamped along the way.[1][3]

Glyphs in this pack are made with the glyph recipe type, and the Spell Binder is made in the Enchanting Apparatus. The recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack recipes.[3]

Trail: the echoing projectile

Glyph Trail is a projectile that resolves your spell along its trail several times before it expires. Think of it as a lingering version of a normal projectile: instead of hitting once, it keeps applying the spell as it flies.[1][3]

  • Accelerate and Decelerate raise or lower the projectile's velocity.[4]
  • AOE increases the area of effect, and Split creates additional projectiles.[4]
  • Extend Time increases the time between each cast, while Duration Down decreases the delay between casts.[4]
  • Pierce lets the projectile pass through enemies, and Sensitive makes it resolve on blocks, but over a smaller area.[4]

Plow: the farming glyph

Glyph Plow fills the gap in the "Spellbook of all trades" set: it plows dirt and handles the other jobs a hoe normally does. Add AOE to increase the area it affects, which is great for tilling a whole field in one cast.[1][3][4]

Plane: shaped area effects

Glyph Propagate Plane works like a non-repeating version of Linger. Use it to give area of effect to a following spell part that doesn't support AOE on its own, or to build circles, cylinders and hollow squares.[1][3]

  • AOE increases the width of the plane, and Pierce increases its depth.[4]
  • Dampen makes the plane hollow, and Sensitive makes it circular.[4]
  • Randomize randomly drops out blocks from the shape.[4]
Watch out: This pack changed the Plane glyph's recipe, so don't rely on older videos or guides for it. Check the recipe below instead.[3]

Ported glyphs and propagators

The mod repacks glyphs from several older add-ons. From Too Many Glyphs it brings Ray, Chain, RevDirection and most of the filters. From Omega it brings the propagators based on the vanilla forms, plus Flatten. From Elemental it brings the Arc and Homing projectile forms and their propagators. From Trinkets it brings Filter: Self and Filter: Not Self.[1]

  • Arc Projectile is affected by gravity. Each Pierce you add makes it bounce one more time when it hits the ground.[4]
  • Homing Projectile seeks the nearest entity and follows it. With no valid target it behaves like a normal projectile, and it only targets players if you augment it with Sensitive.[4]
  • The Arc and Homing propagators turn the rest of your spell into that projectile and fire it from wherever the spell lands. The Homing version is oriented toward where the caster is looking.[4]
  • Chaining gains more targets with AOE and a longer maximum distance between targets with Pierce. Sensitive restricts chaining to entities of the same type and to exposed blocks.[4]
  • Flatten gains damage with Amplify, loses damage with Dampen, gets randomized damage with Randomize, and applies looting on kills with Fortune.[4]
  • Ray with Sensitive 1 can strike things that don't block motion, like plants or floating Magelight globes. With Sensitive 2 it can also strike fluids.[4]
  • Filter: Self stops the spell unless it targets the caster, and Filter: Not Self stops it if it does target the caster.[4]
Tip: Ported glyphs disable themselves if their original add-on is installed, including any custom behaviors they have. If a glyph seems to be missing, the original add-on may be providing it instead.[1]

The light and dark filter glyphs, Glyph Filter Light and Glyph Filter Dark, are also craftable in this pack.[3]

The Spell Binder

The Spell Binder is an alternative to the spellbook. It does not allow on-the-fly spellcrafting, but it can hold up to 25 spells in the form of caster tomes or spell parchments. That makes it a good fit for the spells you won't ever edit, or for sharing spells without sharing a whole book.[1][3]

Book covers and threads

The binder accepts threads, just like Ars armor does. The mod adds dedicated book threads, called book covers, that give your binder extra flavor or bonuses.[1]

  • Focus threads, including air, earth, fire, water, blockshaping and summoning, let you cast spells as if that focus were equipped. They trigger the glyph combos but don't give you the focus's extra stats.[1][4]
  • The wild magic thread randomly adds positive augments to the effects of your spells. The project page describes the randomize thread as giving each glyph a random buff or debuff.[1][4]
  • Slow Power increases the damage of spells cast from the binder but heavily reduces their speed.[4]
  • Cheap Damage greatly discounts spell cost but heavily reduces damage.[4]
  • Sharp Pages increases melee damage and the knockback thread increases knockback, turning your binder into a melee weapon.[1][4]
Watch out: Threads made for Ars armor fit in the binder, but there's no guarantee they will work, and they might be patched out entirely. Stick to the dedicated book covers for reliable results.[1]

Contingencies

The project page describes Contingencies, inspired by Ars Magica, for version 1.21.1 and up. A Contingency stores the spell parts after it for the duration of the effect and casts them when its condition happens, and mana is only spent on the initial cast. Only one contingency can be active at a time. For example, Contingency Death followed by Explode causes an explosion on the target if it dies while the effect is still on it.[1]

How do you progress through Not Enough Glyphs?

2 parts

This pack has no confirmed progression tiers for this mod, so this section covers what you can actually craft. Every item comes from one of two kinds of Ars Nouveau recipes: glyph recipes for the new spell glyphs, and an Enchanting Apparatus recipe for the Spell Binder.[3]

The Spell Binder

The Spell Binder is crafted in the Enchanting Apparatus, and it uses the mod's default recipe in this pack.[3]

How does Not Enough Glyphs work with other mods?

2 parts

Not Enough Glyphs is built entirely around Ars Nouveau, so that's where its integrations are. It started as custom ports of glyphs from older Ars addons and adds its own glyphs plus the Spell Binder. In this pack, every one of its recipes runs through Ars Nouveau crafting and mixes Ars Nouveau materials with vanilla items.[1][3]

Glyphs crafted the Ars Nouveau way

The three glyphs in this pack's recipe data all use Ars Nouveau's glyph recipe type, so you unlock them the same way as regular Ars Nouveau glyphs. Two of them use the mod's own recipes. The Plane glyph is the exception: the pack has changed its recipe, so check the recipe below rather than relying on older guides.[3]

  • Glyph Plow is the glyph missing from the "Spellbook of all trades" set. It lets your spells plow dirt and do other hoe jobs.[1]
  • Glyph Trail is a projectile that resolves your spell along its trail a few times before it expires, a bit like a lingering version of the regular projectile.[1]
  • Glyph Propagate Plane is a non-repeating version of linger. You can use it to give area of effect to spells that don't support it directly, or to make circles, cylinders and hollow squares.[1]

The Spell Binder and the Enchanting Apparatus

The Spell Binder is made on Ars Nouveau's Enchanting Apparatus, and it builds on the Ars Nouveau Novice Spell Book. It's an alternative to the spellbook: you can't craft spells on the fly with it, but it holds up to 25 spells as caster tomes or spell parchments. That makes it great for spells you'll never edit, or for sharing spells without handing over a whole book.[1][3]

The binder also takes threads, just like Ars Nouveau armor. The mod adds dedicated book threads called book covers for those slots. Focus covers for Shapers or Summoning let the binder trigger those glyph combos, though you won't get the extra stats. Other covers randomize your glyphs or trade spell speed or cost against power.[1]

Watch out: Threads made for Ars Nouveau armor fit in the Spell Binder, but the mod says there's no guarantee they'll work, and they might be patched out entirely. Stick to the dedicated book covers if you want reliable results.[1]

Unverified The mod page mentions Elemental focus covers that appear when Ars Elemental is loaded. The sources don't confirm whether that mod or those covers are available in this pack.

What changed in Not Enough Glyphs between versions?

1 part

Not Enough Glyphs has been in All the Mods 10 for a long time. It was first included in version 2.11 or earlier, and All the Mods 10 3.0 ships Not Enough Glyphs 4.1.3 (the file not_enough_glyphs-1.21.1-4.1.3.jar).[5]

Updates across pack releases

  • All the Mods 10 2.43 updated Not Enough Glyphs from 4.0.6 to 4.1.1.[6]
  • All the Mods 10 2.47 updated Not Enough Glyphs from 4.1.1 to 4.1.3.[7]
  • All the Mods 10 3.0 still ships version 4.1.3, so if you're coming from 2.47 you're on the same Not Enough Glyphs version.[5][7]

Unverified We don't have the mod's own changelogs for these versions, so we can't confirm which glyphs, fixes or balance changes each update brought.
