What is Farming for Blockheads?

1 part

Farming for Blockheads is all about getting your farm supplies the easy way. Its centerpiece is the Market, which gives you a villager who can sell you anything, as long as you have the right amount of emeralds.[1]

Here's the good news: it's usually just 1 emerald per item, and the Market's villager has pretty much everything. If you'd rather trade emeralds than hunt down farming basics yourself, this mod is for you.[1]

Where it fits in this pack

You'll find this mod in the Food and Farming quest chapter. The quest "Purchasing Farm Supplies" quest asks you to get a Market, and it unlocks after the quest Mary had a Little Lamb.[1]

Tip: Keep some emeralds handy once your Market is placed. Most items usually cost just 1 emerald each.[1]

This pack runs Farming for Blockheads version 21.1.11 for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1.[2]

Unverified Could not confirm for this pack exactly which items the Market sells or what else the mod adds. Open the Market in game to see its full selection.

How do you get started with Farming for Blockheads?

3 parts

Farming for Blockheads is all about making your farm life easier, and in this pack the very first thing you'll want is the Market. It's also what the pack's questline asks you to make: the quest "Purchasing Farm Supplies" quest in the Food and Farming chapter unlocks after Mary had a Little Lamb and is completed by getting a Market.[1]

Step 1: Build a Market

The Market gives you a villager merchant who sells you farm supplies for emeralds. The quest text says it's usually just 1 Emerald per item, so a small stack of emeralds goes a long way when you're starting a farm.[1]

In this pack the Market also sells all three fertilizers: Green, Red and Yellow. These Market entries were changed by the pack, so they may not match what you've seen elsewhere.[3]

Unverified The exact list of seeds, saplings and other goods the Market sells in this pack, and the exact emerald price of each fertilizer, could not be confirmed. Check the Market in-game to see what's on offer.

Step 2: Boost your crops with fertilizer

Once your fields are going, fertilizer is the next upgrade. You can buy it from the Market or craft it yourself. Heads up: the pack changed the crafting recipes for both Green and Red Fertilizer, so use the recipes below rather than old guides.[3]

Watch out: Fertilized Farmland isn't permanent. Each bonus it gives you has a chance to turn it back into regular Farmland, so keep some fertilizer on hand to top your fields back up.[4]

Unverified What Yellow Fertilizer does and the exact bonus and regression chances in this pack could not be confirmed.

Step 3: Automate your animals

With crops sorted, turn to your animal pens. The Chicken Nest collects eggs laid by nearby chickens, so you don't have to hunt them off the floor anymore.[4]

The Feeding Trough auto-feeds nearby animals that are ready to mate, so your herds keep breeding on their own. It stops feeding once a set maximum number of animals of each type is nearby, so your pens won't overflow forever.[4]

How does Farming for Blockheads work?

4 parts

Farming for Blockheads is built around a handful of blocks and items: the Market, the Feeding Trough, the Chicken Nest and three fertilizers. There's no power, fluids or multiblocks here. Each block does one job for your farm, and this section walks through each one.[3][4]

The Market

The Market is where you buy farming supplies. Its stock is organised into groups, and the mod's built-in default groups are selling.seeds, selling.saplings and selling.fertilizers.minecraft. So out of the box, the market is your source for seeds, saplings and fertilizers.[4]

The mod can switch groups on and off. An exclude list always wins over the include list, so excluding selling.seeds removes every seed from the market, even if that group is also enabled.[4]

The market also has merchants. The mod can give them a list of possible names, and it has an option to treat merchants as babies on a technical level to block exploits based on their death loot, such as farming them for blood.[4]

In this pack, the market entries for Green Fertilizer, Red Fertilizer and Yellow Fertilizer have all been changed by the pack. Check the recipe viewer below to see what the pack's versions look like.[3]

        Feeding Trough

The Feeding Trough automatically feeds nearby animals that are ready to mate, so you don't have to walk around your pens with food in hand. It only reaches animals within a set range.[4]

The trough also has a population cap. Once a set maximum number of animals of one type is reached, it stops feeding that type. This keeps it from breeding endlessly and filling your pens.[4]

        Chicken Nest

Unverified The exact range of the Feeding Trough and Chicken Nest, and the trough's animal cap, are not listed in the available sources. Whether hoppers or pipes can feed the trough or pull eggs from the nest is also unconfirmed.

        Fertilizers and Fertilized Farmland

Green Fertilizer increases crop output: when you use it, there's a chance to get a bonus crop. Red Fertilizer works on growth instead, with a chance to give crops a bonus growth.[4]

The mod also adds Fertilized Farmland. Each time it provides a bonus, there's a chance it turns back into regular farmland. Plan on topping it up now and then rather than treating it as permanent.[4]

Unverified What Yellow Fertilizer does, and the exact bonus and regression chances, are not described in the available sources.

Two of the three fertilizer crafting recipes are different in this pack. Green Fertilizer and Red Fertilizer both have recipes changed by the pack, while Yellow Fertilizer keeps the mod's own recipe.[3]

How do you progress through Farming for Blockheads?

        3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Farming for Blockheads has no formal tier ladder in this pack's quests or recipes. What they do show is a sensible order to work in: start with the Market, add animal supplies, then move on to fertilizers.[5][6]

        First: get a Market

The pack's quest for this mod is "Purchasing Farm Supplies" quest, in the Food and Farming chapter. It comes after the quest Mary had a Little Lamb, and its task is to obtain a Market. The quest text says a Market gives you a villager who can sell you anything for emeralds, and that it's usually just 1 Emerald per item.[5]

This is the mod's own recipe, unchanged in the pack.

        Next: animal supplies

Once you have livestock, the Chicken Nest and the Feeding Trough are the crafted blocks to add. Both use the mod's own recipes in this pack. No quest in the sources covers them.[6]

        Then: fertilizers

The mod's fertilizers are Green Fertilizer, Red Fertilizer and Yellow Fertilizer. The pack has changed the green and red crafting recipes, so don't rely on the mod's defaults for those. The yellow crafting recipe is the mod's own.[6]

You can also get each of these fertilizers from the Market. The pack has changed every one of those Market offers as well, so check the offers in your own Market rather than assuming the mod's defaults.[6]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Farming for Blockheads?

        1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

In this pack, Farming for Blockheads shows up in one quest, in the Food and Farming chapter. It's a short stop, but it points you at one of the mod's handiest blocks.[5]

        Purchasing Farm Supplies

The quest "Purchasing Farm Supplies" quest asks you to obtain the Market. It unlocks after the quest "Mary had a Little Lamb", so you'll work through that one first.[5]

The quest text says the Market gives you a villager who can sell you just about anything, as long as you have the right amount of emeralds. It's usually just 1 emerald per item, which makes it a cheap way to pick up farm supplies. The quest's subtitle also hints that the villager has more than one way to spawn.[5]

Tip: Keep some emeralds on hand before you place the Market. The quest says purchases usually cost 1 emerald per item.[5]

Unverified The sources don't say what this quest rewards, or whether any other chapters ask for items from this mod.
