What is Farming for Blockheads?

1 part

Farming for Blockheads is included in this pack at version 21.1.10. If you'd rather buy your farm supplies than hunt down every piece yourself, this mod is for you.[1]

The heart of the mod is the Market. A Market gives you a villager who sells you items for emeralds. The quest book says the price is usually just 1 emerald per item, and that the stock covers just about everything.[2]

Where it fits in the pack

You'll find the mod in the Food and Farming quest chapter. The quest "Purchasing Farm Supplies" quest asks you to get a Market. It unlocks after the Mary had a Little Lamb quest, so it sits on the farming side of your progression.[2]

Tip: The quest's subtitle, "The Villager has more than one way to Spawn", hints at what the Market does: it gives you a villager trader. Stock up on emeralds before you build one so you can start shopping right away.[2]

How do you get started with Farming for Blockheads?

3 parts

Farming for Blockheads is all about making your farms easier to run, and in this pack the very first thing you'll want is a Market. It's the goal of the "Purchasing Farm Supplies" quest quest in the Food and Farming chapter, which unlocks after the Mary had a Little Lamb quest.[2]

Step 1: Build a Market

The Market gives you a villager that can sell you anything, as long as you have the right amount of emeralds. The quest's hint is that it's usually just 1 emerald per item, and the merchant stocks pretty much everything, so this is your shortcut to farming supplies you haven't found yet.[2]

Step 2: Get some fertilizer

The mod has three fertilizers: Green Fertilizer, Red Fertilizer and Yellow Fertilizer. Green Fertilizer increases crop output by giving you a chance at a bonus crop. Red Fertilizer gives a chance at bonus growth. Keep in mind that fertilized farmland can turn back into regular farmland, with a chance for each bonus it provides.[3]

You can buy all three from the Market. This pack has changed those Market entries, so check the prices in the Market itself. You can also craft them. The pack changed the crafting recipes for Green and Red Fertilizer, so use the recipes below rather than anything you remember from other packs.[4]

Step 3: Automate your animals

Once your crops are sorted, turn to your animal pens. A Chicken Nest collects eggs laid by nearby chickens, so you don't have to chase eggs around your coop.[3]

A Feeding Trough automatically feeds nearby animals that are ready to mate, which keeps your pens breeding without you. It stops feeding once there are enough animals of each type nearby, so it won't overfill your pen.[3]

How does Farming for Blockheads work?

5 parts

Farming for Blockheads is all about making farm life less of a chore. Its core pieces are small helper blocks for your animal pens, three colours of fertilizer for your crops, and a Market where you can pick up farming goods. None of these need power or fluids; the sources describe them as simple blocks that work on whatever is nearby.[3][4]

Chicken Nest

The Chicken Nest collects eggs laid by chickens, so you don't have to hunt for them around your coop. It picks up laid eggs within a set range, and that range is a mod setting.[3]

Feeding Trough

The Feeding Trough auto-feeds nearby animals that are ready to mate, which keeps your breeding pens going without you standing there with a stack of wheat. It only reaches animals within its range, and it stops feeding once a maximum number of animals of each type is reached. That cap is what keeps a trough from filling your base with cows forever.[3]

Tip: The animal cap counts each animal type separately. A single trough area can hold a mixed pen without one species using up the limit for the others.[3]

Unverified The exact ranges and the maximum animal count used in this pack could not be confirmed, because the mod's config files are not available as sources. The same applies to whether the trough or nest can be fed or emptied with hoppers or pipes.

Fertilizers

There are three fertilizers, and each one does a different job. Green Fertilizer increases crop output: when you use it, you get a chance at a bonus crop. Red Fertilizer gives a chance at bonus growth instead.[3]

Fertilizers work through Fertilized Farmland. Fertilized Farmland isn't permanent: each bonus it provides carries a chance that it turns back into regular Farmland. Expect to top your fields up now and then.[3]

Unverified What Yellow Fertilizer does is not described in the available sources, and neither are the exact bonus and regression chances used in this pack.

The pack has changed the crafting recipes for Green Fertilizer and Red Fertilizer. Yellow Fertilizer uses the mod's own recipe. Check the recipes below rather than relying on older guides or videos for other packs.[4]

The Market

The Market is the mod's shop block. In this pack it offers all three fertilizers: Green, Red and Yellow. The pack has changed each of these market entries, and the recipe data lists them with no item inputs.[4]

Unverified It is unconfirmed whether the missing item inputs mean these market entries are free in this pack or only that their cost isn't shown in the data. Check the Market in-game before you plan around it.

        Merchants

The mod includes merchants, which take their names from a configurable list. There is also a setting that makes merchants count as babies on a technical level only. It exists to shut down exploits that farm merchants for their death loot, such as blood.[3]

Unverified How merchants relate to the Market block, and whether the baby setting is turned on in this pack, is not confirmed by the available sources.

How do you progress through Farming for Blockheads?

        3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Farming for Blockheads has no formal tier ladder in this pack's quests or recipes. What they do show is a sensible order to work in: start with the Market, add animal supplies, then move on to fertilizers.[5][6]

        First: get a Market

The pack's quest for this mod is "Purchasing Farm Supplies" quest, in the Food and Farming chapter. It comes after the quest Mary had a Little Lamb, and its task is to obtain a Market. The quest text says a Market gives you a villager who can sell you anything for emeralds, and that it's usually just 1 Emerald per item.[5]

This is the mod's own recipe, unchanged in the pack.

        Next: animal supplies

Once you have livestock, the Chicken Nest and the Feeding Trough are the crafted blocks to add. Both use the mod's own recipes in this pack. No quest in the sources covers them.[6]

        Then: fertilizers

The mod's fertilizers are Green Fertilizer, Red Fertilizer and Yellow Fertilizer. The pack has changed the green and red crafting recipes, so don't rely on the mod's defaults for those. The yellow crafting recipe is the mod's own.[6]

You can also get each of these fertilizers from the Market. The pack has changed every one of those Market offers as well, so check the offers in your own Market rather than assuming the mod's defaults.[6]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Farming for Blockheads?

        1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

In this pack, Farming for Blockheads shows up in one quest, in the Food and Farming chapter. It's a short stop, but it points you at one of the mod's handiest blocks.[5]

        Purchasing Farm Supplies

The quest "Purchasing Farm Supplies" quest asks you to obtain the Market. It unlocks after the quest "Mary had a Little Lamb", so you'll work through that one first.[5]

The quest text says the Market gives you a villager who can sell you just about anything, as long as you have the right amount of emeralds. It's usually just 1 emerald per item, which makes it a cheap way to pick up farm supplies. The quest's subtitle also hints that the villager has more than one way to spawn.[5]

Tip: Keep some emeralds on hand before you place the Market. The quest says purchases usually cost 1 emerald per item.[5]

Unverified The sources don't say what this quest rewards, or whether any other chapters ask for items from this mod.

What changed in Farming for Blockheads between versions?

        1 part

All the Mods 10 5.4 ships Farming for Blockheads 21.1.10, using the file farmingforblockheads-neoforge-1.21.1-21.1.10.jar. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.2 or earlier.[1]

Version bumps in the pack changelogs

Here are the updates to the mod that the pack changelogs record, from oldest to newest:[7][8][9][10][11]

        • All the Mods 10 2.32: updated from 21.1.2 to 21.1.4.[7]
        • All the Mods 10 2.36: updated from 21.1.4 to 21.1.7.[8]
        • All the Mods 10 2.43: updated from 21.1.7 to 21.1.8.[9]
        • All the Mods 10 4.12: updated from 21.1.8 to 21.1.9.[10]
        • All the Mods 10 5.1: updated from 21.1.9 to 21.1.10.[11]

The 5.1 update is the most recent one recorded, and 5.4 still ships that same version, 21.1.10.[1][11]

Unverified What actually changed inside each Farming for Blockheads version (new features, fixes or balance tweaks) is unverified. The pack changelogs only list the version numbers, and no changelogs for the shipped jars are available.
