What is Farming for Blockheads?

2 parts

Farming for Blockheads is a farming-focused mod, and this pack ships version 21.1.9 of it for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 2.2 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the farming experience here.[1]

The Market

The part of the mod the pack's quests focus on is the Market. According to the quest text, a Market gives you a villager who can sell you anything, as long as you have the right amount of emeralds. The quest says it's usually just 1 emerald per item, which makes it a handy way to pick up farm supplies without hunting for them.[2]

Where it fits in progression

You meet the Market in the "Food and Farming" quest chapter, through the quest "Purchasing Farm Supplies" quest. It unlocks after the quest "Mary had a Little Lamb", and its task is simply to get a Market. That makes it an early-to-mid farming step rather than something you need to chase down on your own.[2]

Unverified The sources I have don't show this mod on the ATM Star quest path, and they don't cover its other features, recipes or config options, so I'm leaving those out of this overview.

How do you get started with Farming for Blockheads?

4 parts

Welcome to Farming for Blockheads in this pack! The mod gives you a small set of farm helpers, and the order you make them in matters. Start with the Market, then automate your animals, then boost your crops.[3][4]

Make a Market first

The Market is where everything starts. It gives you a villager who can sell you anything if you have the right amount of emeralds, and the quest text says it's usually just 1 emerald per item. That makes it a great way to fill gaps in your early farm supplies.[2]

The pack's quest book covers it in "Purchasing Farm Supplies" quest, in the Food and Farming chapter, right after the quest Mary had a Little Lamb.[2]

Feeding Trough for breeding

The Feeding Trough auto-feeds nearby animals that are ready to mate, which takes most of the work out of breeding. It has limits: the mod has options for its feeding range and for the maximum number of animals per type before it stops feeding. The sources here do not show the pack's values for those, so keep your pens modest until you know them.[4]

Fertilizers for your crops

Once your animals are running, move on to fertilizer. Green Fertilizer increases crop output, and Red Fertilizer gives a chance of a bonus growth. Fertilized Farmland can turn back into regular Farmland when bonuses are provided, so expect to reapply it.[4]

The pack changed the crafting recipes for Green Fertilizer and Red Fertilizer, so don't rely on what you remember from the base mod. It also changed the Market offers for the fertilizers. Yellow Fertilizer keeps the mod's own crafting recipe.[3]

How does Farming for Blockheads work?

5 parts

The sources for Farming for Blockheads describe a small set of farming helpers rather than big machines: the Chicken Nest, the Feeding Trough, the fertilizers and the Market. Nothing in them covers power, fluids or multiblocks, so this section sticks to what they do confirm.[3][4]

Chicken Nest

The Chicken Nest collects eggs laid by chickens. It picks up laid eggs within a set range, and that range is controlled by a config option called chickenNestRange.[3][4]

Feeding Trough

The Feeding Trough automatically feeds nearby animals that are ready to mate. It only reaches animals within its range, set by feedingTroughRange.[3][4]

It also has a cap. The option feedingTroughMaxAnimals sets the maximum number of animals, counted per type, before the trough stops feeding.[4]

Fertilizers

Green Fertilizer increases crop output. Its bonus crop chance is controlled by fertilizerBonusCropChance.[4]

Red Fertilizer gives a chance of a bonus growth, controlled by fertilizerBonusGrowthChance.[4]

Fertilizer isn't permanent. Each time a bonus is provided, there's a chance that Fertilized Farmland turns back into regular Farmland. That chance is set by fertilizerRegressionChance, so you'll need to re-fertilize over time.[4]

Crafting the fertilizers in this pack

The pack changed the recipes for Green Fertilizer and Red Fertilizer, while Yellow Fertilizer keeps the mod's own. The recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack versions, so don't rely on the mod's defaults.[3]

The Market has its own crafting recipe. The pack has also changed the Market entries for the green, red and yellow fertilizers. The recipe dump lists those entries without item inputs, so what they cost isn't shown in the sources.[3]

Merchants get their names from a configurable list (merchantNames). There's also a treatMerchantsLikeBabies option. When it's true, merchants are treated as babies on a technical level only, which may resolve exploits based on merchant death loot.[4]

Unverified The sources here include no config files for this mod, so the actual values in this pack for ranges, animal caps and fertilizer chances are not shown. Those options are set in the mod's config, which the sources do not cover.

How do you progress through Farming for Blockheads?

        3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Farming for Blockheads has no formal tier ladder in this pack's quests or recipes. What they do show is a sensible order to work in: start with the Market, add animal supplies, then move on to fertilizers.[5][6]

        First: get a Market

The pack's quest for this mod is "Purchasing Farm Supplies" quest, in the Food and Farming chapter. It comes after the quest Mary had a Little Lamb, and its task is to obtain a Market. The quest text says a Market gives you a villager who can sell you anything for emeralds, and that it's usually just 1 Emerald per item.[5]

This is the mod's own recipe, unchanged in the pack.

        Next: animal supplies

Once you have livestock, the Chicken Nest and the Feeding Trough are the crafted blocks to add. Both use the mod's own recipes in this pack. No quest in the sources covers them.[6]

        Then: fertilizers

The mod's fertilizers are Green Fertilizer, Red Fertilizer and Yellow Fertilizer. The pack has changed the green and red crafting recipes, so don't rely on the mod's defaults for those. The yellow crafting recipe is the mod's own.[6]

You can also get each of these fertilizers from the Market. The pack has changed every one of those Market offers as well, so check the offers in your own Market rather than assuming the mod's defaults.[6]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Farming for Blockheads?

        1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

In this pack, Farming for Blockheads shows up in one quest, in the Food and Farming chapter. It's a short stop, but it points you at one of the mod's handiest blocks.[5]

        Purchasing Farm Supplies

The quest "Purchasing Farm Supplies" quest asks you to obtain the Market. It unlocks after the quest "Mary had a Little Lamb", so you'll work through that one first.[5]

The quest text says the Market gives you a villager who can sell you just about anything, as long as you have the right amount of emeralds. It's usually just 1 emerald per item, which makes it a cheap way to pick up farm supplies. The quest's subtitle also hints that the villager has more than one way to spawn.[5]

Tip: Keep some emeralds on hand before you place the Market. The quest says purchases usually cost 1 emerald per item.[5]

Unverified The sources don't say what this quest rewards, or whether any other chapters ask for items from this mod.

What changed in Farming for Blockheads between versions?

        1 part

All the Mods 10 4.14 ships Farming for Blockheads 21.1.9 for NeoForge 1.21.1. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.2 or earlier, and the pack changelogs show it being updated several times since then.[1]

Pack releases that updated the mod

        • All the Mods 10 2.32 updated Farming for Blockheads from 21.1.2 to 21.1.4.[7]
        • All the Mods 10 2.36 updated it from 21.1.4 to 21.1.7.[8]
        • All the Mods 10 2.43 updated it from 21.1.7 to 21.1.8.[9]
        • All the Mods 10 4.12 updated it from 21.1.8 to 21.1.9, the version you get in 4.14.[1][10]

Unverified The pack changelogs only record the version bumps. They don't say what changed in each Farming for Blockheads release, such as new features, fixes, or balance changes, and there are no stored changelogs for the shipped jar. I can't confirm whether any of these updates changed recipes or behavior you rely on.
