What is Extreme sound muffler?
2 parts
Extreme Sound Muffler is a client-side quality-of-life mod that lets you turn down or silence individual sounds in the game. Instead of dropping your master volume and losing everything, you pick the exact sound that is bothering you and muffle just that one.[1]
This pack ships version 3.48.3, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21. It has been part of the pack for a long time, included since version 0.55 or earlier.[2]
It is client-side only, so installing it on a server does nothing. That also means everything you configure is yours alone and will not affect anyone else you play with.[1]
Who it is for
If you are running a big automated base, this is the mod that saves your ears. Anything that makes a repeated noise you would rather not hear can be muffled selectively, with a volume slider so you can dial a sound down instead of removing it entirely.[1]
It also has Anchors, which are ranged mufflers. You place an Anchor at a position and give it a name and a range, then muffle sounds only inside that area. That way your noisy mob farm stays quiet where it sits, but the same sounds still play everywhere else in the world.[1]
Where it fits in progression
There is no progression to speak of here. There are no recipes, no items to unlock and no quests tied to this mod in the pack, and it is not part of the ATM Star path. It is available from the moment you load in, and you will get the most out of it once you start building machines and farms that make noise on a loop.[1][2]
To open it, click the button in your inventory screen or bind a key for it. If the inventory button annoys you, you can drag it somewhere else by holding right-click on it, or disable it in the config entirely.[1]
How do you get started with Extreme sound muffler?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Good news: Extreme Sound Muffler is a client-side mod, so there's nothing to craft or gather before you start. It lets you muffle sounds selectively, and you set it up entirely from its screen. Installing it on a server does nothing, because it only runs on your own game.[1]
Unverified I couldn't confirm any in-pack recipes, items or quests for this mod, so there are no recipe blocks here. Everything below comes from the mod's project page and describes the mod's own behavior. Check the pack's config before relying on specific defaults.
Muffle your first sound
- Click the muffler button in your inventory, or assign a key to open the screen.[1]
- Click the button next to the sound you want to muffle.[1]
- Optional: drag the slider to set the volume of that sound instead of silencing it completely.[1]
- Optional: press the play button to check that it's the sound you want to muffle.[1]
The play button is worth using. Many sounds have similar names, and a quick test saves you from muting the wrong one.[1]
Use Anchors for local quiet
Anchors are ranged mufflers. They're for when you want to muffle a sound only in a small area, such as around your machine room, while keeping it everywhere else.[1]
- Open the muffler screen.[1]
- Select one of the 10 numbered buttons.[1]
- Press the marker-like button on the right panel to set the Anchor position.[1]
- Optional: press the edit Anchor button next to the marker to set the Anchor's name and range.[1]
- Muffle the sounds you want for that Anchor.[1]
Tweak the setup
If the inventory button is in the way, hold right mouse button over it and drag it somewhere else. You can also disable it in the config if you'd rather use a key.[1]
The mod is highly configurable. You can move the muffle and play buttons to the left or right of the screen, disable Anchors, blacklist sounds so they don't appear in the screen, and choose the default muffle volume. It also has a dark mode that you enable in the config.[1]
How does Extreme sound muffler work?
4 parts
This one is purely client side. Everything it does happens in your game only, so there are no machines, no power and no blocks to place. Installing it on a server does nothing at all, which also means your muffle settings travel with you rather than living in the world.[1]
The core idea is simple: the mod watches the sounds the game plays and lets you turn any of them down or off individually. You pick sounds from a list in its own screen, set a volume for each one, and that's it.[1]
The muffler screen
- Open the GUI with the button in your inventory, or assign a key to it in your controls.[1]
- Click the button next to the sound you want to muffle.[1]
- Optionally drag the slider to set the volume for that sound instead of silencing it outright.[1]
- Optionally press the play button to preview the sound and confirm you picked the right one.[1]
When you hit the mute button, the sound drops to the volume set by general.defaultMuteVolume. In this pack that value is 0, so a single click silences the sound completely; the option accepts anything from 0.0 up to 0.9 if you would rather muting just quiet things down.[3]
The screen itself has a couple of comfort options. general.leftButtons moves the muffle and play buttons to the left side of the GUI, and general.useDarkTheme swaps the screen over to dark mode. Both are off in this pack, so you get the light theme with the buttons on the right by default. Tips inside the muffler screen are on via general.showTip.[1][3]
Anchors: muffling by area
Anchors are ranged mufflers. Instead of silencing a sound everywhere, an anchor silences it only inside a small area, which is what you want when one particular base room is the noisy one and you still want to hear that sound elsewhere.[1]
- Open the muffler screen.[1]
- Select one of the 10 numbered buttons.[1]
- Press the marker-like button on the right panel to set the anchor's position.[1]
- Optionally press the edit anchor button next to the marker to give it a name and a range.[1]
- Muffle sounds while that anchor is selected, and the muffling applies to that area.[1]
Anchors can be turned off entirely with Anchors.disableAnchors. This pack leaves them enabled.[1][3]
The inventory button
The quickest way into the GUI is the muffler button drawn on your inventory screen. If it gets in the way of another mod's widget, hold the right mouse button over it and drag it wherever you like; the new position is saved back into the config coordinates.[1][3]
In this pack the survival inventory button sits at inventory_button.invButtonX 75 and inventory_button.invButtonY 7, and the creative inventory button at inventory_button.creativeInvButtonX 2 and inventory_button.creativeInvButtonY 2. Both buttons are enabled, since inventory_button.disableInventoryButton and inventory_button.disableCreativeInventoryButton are both false. If you prefer a clean inventory screen, turn them off and bind a key instead.[1][3]
The sound blacklist
Not every sound shows up in the muffler list. general.forbiddenSounds holds prefixes that are hidden from the screen, and in this pack it is set to "ui.", "music." and "ambient.". That keeps interface clicks, the music tracks and ambient cave noise out of your way while you hunt for the machine that's actually driving you mad.[1][3]
There is a related switch, general.lawfulAllList, which controls whether the "ALL" sounds list includes the blacklisted entries. It is false in this pack, so the ALL list stays filtered. Flip it if you genuinely want to reach in and mute a music or UI sound.[3]
Which Extreme sound muffler config options matter?
2 parts
Everything for this mod lives in one client-side file, general.defaultMuteVolume. The pack ships it with the mod's own defaults, so nothing here has been tweaked for you, but a few options are worth knowing about because they change how the muffler screen behaves day to day.[3]
The muffling options
- general.defaultMuteVolume sets the volume applied when you press the mute button. The pack leaves it at 0, the mod default, and it accepts values from 0.0 to 0.9 if you'd rather quiet sounds than silence them.[3]
- general.forbiddenSounds is the blacklist that keeps sounds out of the muffler screen entirely. The pack uses the default list of "ui.", "music." and "ambient.", so interface, music and ambient sounds won't show up for muffling.[1][3]
- general.lawfulAllList controls whether the "ALL" sounds list includes those blacklisted sounds. It's false in the pack, so blacklisted sounds stay hidden there too.[3]
- Anchors.disableAnchors is false, so Anchors (the ranged mufflers that silence sounds in a small area) are available.[1][3]
Interface and buttons
- general.useDarkTheme is false in the pack. Flip it to true if you want the mod's dark mode.[1][3]
- general.leftButtons is false. Set it to true to move the muffle and play buttons to the left side of the GUI.[1][3]
- general.showTip is true, so the muffler screen shows its tips.[3]
- inventory_button.disableInventoryButton and inventory_button.disableCreativeInventoryButton are both false, so the muffler button appears in your survival and creative inventories.[3]
- The button's position comes from inventory_button.invButtonX and inventory_button.invButtonY, set to 75 and 7 in the pack, with the creative pair inventory_button.creativeInvButtonX and inventory_button.creativeInvButtonY at 2 and 2. All four match the mod defaults.[3]
What changed in Extreme sound muffler between versions?
1 part
All the Mods 10 2.12 ships Extreme sound muffler 3.48.3, the NeoForge 1.21 build. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 0.32 or earlier.[2]
Recent mod releases
- 3.48.1: Fixed a NeoForge problem where, if another mod didn't load properly, Extreme sound muffler would crash the game instead of letting it run its course.[4]
- 3.48.2: Implemented NeoForge's in-game config.[5]
- 3.48.3: Fixed the mod trying to load on the server side. This is the version in All the Mods 10 2.12.[2][6]
These changelogs don't mention any new muffling features, so I can't point you to gameplay changes in these releases. They are all about loading safely and configuration.[4][5][6]
