Extreme sound muffler is a mod in FTB Skies 2 1.24.0, where it is version 3.56. Extreme sound muffler is a client side mod that allows you to muffle sounds selectively. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Extreme sound muffler?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.12 guide

Extreme Sound Muffler is a client-side quality-of-life mod that lets you turn down or silence individual sounds in the game. Instead of dropping your master volume and losing everything, you pick the exact sound that is bothering you and muffle just that one.[1]

This pack ships version 3.48.3, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21. It has been part of the pack for a long time, included since version 0.55 or earlier.[2]

It is client-side only, so installing it on a server does nothing. That also means everything you configure is yours alone and will not affect anyone else you play with.[1]

Who it is for

If you are running a big automated base, this is the mod that saves your ears. Anything that makes a repeated noise you would rather not hear can be muffled selectively, with a volume slider so you can dial a sound down instead of removing it entirely.[1]

It also has Anchors, which are ranged mufflers. You place an Anchor at a position and give it a name and a range, then muffle sounds only inside that area. That way your noisy mob farm stays quiet where it sits, but the same sounds still play everywhere else in the world.[1]

Where it fits in progression

There is no progression to speak of here. There are no recipes, no items to unlock and no quests tied to this mod in the pack, and it is not part of the ATM Star path. It is available from the moment you load in, and you will get the most out of it once you start building machines and farms that make noise on a loop.[1][2]

To open it, click the button in your inventory screen or bind a key for it. If the inventory button annoys you, you can drag it somewhere else by holding right-click on it, or disable it in the config entirely.[1]

Tip: Not sure a sound in the list is the right one? Press the play button next to it to preview the sound before you muffle it.[1]

How do you get started with Extreme sound muffler?

3 parts

Extreme Sound Muffler is a client side mod that lets you muffle sounds selectively. You just open its screen and start muting.[1]

Because it's client side only, it affects just your own game. Installing it on a server does nothing.[1]

Muffle your first sound

  1. Click the muffler button in your inventory, or assign a key to the "Open sound muffler screen" action to open the screen.[1][3]
  2. Click the button next to the sound you want to muffle.[1]
  3. Optional: drag the slider to set the volume of that sound instead of silencing it completely.[1]
  4. Optional: press the play button to check it's the sound you want to muffle.[1]

The pack's quest book points you to the same inventory button. The quest "Muffling Upgrade" quest says you can click the speaker icon next to your player inside your inventory to mute any sound.[4]

Where it shows up in the quest book

The mention sits in the Mekanism chapter, in the Tech Mods group. The Muffling Upgrade quest comes after "Machine Casings" quest. It asks for Muffling Upgrade, which is Mekanism's own way to quiet a machine, and the quest text then points you to this mod for muting any sound.[4]

Muffle just one area with Anchors

Anchors are ranged mufflers, for when you only want to quiet a small area. You get 10 numbered Anchor buttons to choose from.[1]

  1. Open the muffler screen and select one of the 10 numbered buttons.[1]
  2. Press the marker-like button on the right panel to set the Anchor position.[1]
  3. Optional: press the edit Anchor button next to the marker to set the Anchor's name and range.[1]
  4. Muffle the sounds you want, and they'll be quiet within that range.[1]
Tip: You can move the Anchor whenever you like by pressing the marker button again. If you don't like where the inventory button sits, hold the right mouse button over it and drag it somewhere else.[1]

How does Extreme sound muffler work?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.11 guide

Extreme Sound Muffler is a client-side mod, so everything it does happens on your machine only. Installing it on a server does nothing at all, and there are no blocks, machines or power systems involved: the whole mod is a GUI that decides which sounds your client is allowed to play.[1]

The muffler screen

You open the mod's screen either by clicking the button in your inventory or by assigning a key to it. Inside, you get a list of sounds with a button next to each one; clicking that button muffles the sound. Each entry also has a slider so you can set exactly how loud the sound stays instead of silencing it completely, and a play button so you can preview a sound and confirm it's the one you actually want to deal with.[1]

Tip: Use the play button before you muffle anything. Sound ids aren't always obvious, and previewing saves you from muffling the wrong thing and wondering why your mob farm still screams at you.[1]

Anchors: muffling by area

Anchors are the mod's ranged mufflers. Instead of silencing a sound everywhere in the world, an anchor muffles it only inside a small area you define, which is what you want for a noisy machine room or a single farm you don't want to hear from across the base.[1]

  1. Open the muffler screen.[1]
  2. Select one of the 10 numbered buttons, each one is a separate anchor slot.[1]
  3. Press the marker-like button on the right panel to set the anchor's position at where you're standing.[1]
  4. Optionally press the edit anchor button, next to the marker, to give the anchor a name and set its range.[1]
  5. Muffle the sounds you want while that anchor is selected, and they'll only be quieted inside its range.[1]

Anchors aren't permanent placements. You can move one whenever you like by pressing the marker button again, which re-anchors it to your current spot, handy when you rebuild a farm or move your base.[1]

The inventory button

The muffler button that shows up in your inventory screen is movable and optional. Hold right mouse button over it and drag it wherever you want if it's sitting on top of something important, or turn it off entirely in the config and use a keybind instead.[1]

What's configurable

The mod exposes a fair amount of behaviour through its config file, so you can tune the interface and the defaults rather than fighting them.[1]

  • Put the muffle and play buttons on the left or right side of the screen, whichever reads better for you.[1]
  • Disable anchors entirely if you only ever want global muffling.[1]
  • Blacklist sounds so they never show up in the muffler screen at all, which keeps the list manageable in a big pack.[1]
  • Set the default muffle volume that new entries start at.[1]
  • Disable the inventory button.[1]
  • Enable dark mode for the GUI.[1]

Unverified The pack ships no config file for this mod, so the mod's own defaults apply until you open the settings yourself. The exact option names, value ranges and where the file is written aren't covered by the sources available here.

Watch out: Because this mod is client-side only, your muffle list and anchors live with your client, not with a world or server. Other players on a server won't be affected by anything you muffle, and putting the mod on the server side accomplishes nothing.[1]

How do you progress through Extreme sound muffler?

2 parts

Extreme Sound Muffler doesn't have a tier ladder in this pack's quest book. It shows up in a single place: the Mekanism chapter, which sits in the "Tech Mods" group (chapter 36 of 41 in the book).[4]

Where it shows up in the quest book

The mention is in the "Muffling Upgrade" quest quest, which asks you to get a Muffling Upgrade. Its text says the upgrades shut your machines up, and that you can also use Extreme Sound Muffler to mute any sound by clicking the speaker icon next to your player inside your inventory.[4]

That quest unlocks right after "Machine Casings" quest, where you make a Steel Casing. Beside it you'll find other upgrade quests, such as the Speed, Energy and Chemical upgrades.[4]

The path to get there

  1. Start with "Welcome To Mekanism!" quest, which asks for an Osmium Ingot.[4]
  2. Continue to "Generating Power" quest, where you make a Heat Generator.[4]
  3. Then do "The Metallurgic Infuser" quest, where you make a Metallurgic Infuser.[4]
  4. Next is "Carbon Infusion" quest, which asks for Enriched Iron and a Steel Ingot. The quest text says steel is also needed for the basic pipes.[4]
  5. Finish with "Machine Casings" quest, then "Muffling Upgrade" quest.[4]
Tip: The quest book only describes the muffler as clicking the speaker icon in your inventory to mute sounds. For anything beyond that, check the mod's in-game screen.[4]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Extreme sound muffler?

3 parts

Extreme Sound Muffler has no quest chapter of its own in this pack. It shows up in one quest, "Muffling Upgrade" quest, in the Mekanism chapter. That chapter is in the "Tech Mods" group and is chapter 36 of 41 in the quest book.[4]

Muffling Upgrade

The quest asks you to hand in a single item, Muffling Upgrade. Its text is about shutting your machines up. It suggests the muffling upgrades, and also says you can use Extreme Sound Muffler to mute any sound by clicking the speaker icon next to your player inside your inventory.[4]

How you get there

"Muffling Upgrade" quest unlocks after "Machine Casings" quest, so that is the one to finish first. This is the chain leading up to it:[4]

  1. "Welcome To Mekanism!" quest asks for Osmium Ingot.[4]
  2. "Generating Power" quest asks for Heat Generator plus a checkmark.[4]
  3. "The Metallurgic Infuser" quest asks for Metallurgic Infuser.[4]
  4. "Carbon Infusion" quest asks for Enriched Iron and Steel Ingot.[4]
  5. "Machine Casings" quest asks for Steel Casing. The quest says most machines in the mod need Steel Casings.[4]
  6. "Muffling Upgrade" quest asks for Muffling Upgrade.[4]

What sits next to it

Several other quests also unlock after Machine Casings, so you can take them in any order. The upgrade ones are "Speed Upgrade" quest, "Energy Upgrade" quest and "Chemical Upgrade" quest. "Transferring Machine Settings" quest and "Our First Powered Furnace" quest unlock there too.[4]

Which Extreme sound muffler config options matter?

2 parts

Extreme sound muffler is client-side only, so everything here lives in your own client config file and nothing needs to be set on a server. This pack changes very little, and the one clear change is where the inventory button sits.[1][5]

What the pack changed

  • inventory_button.invButtonX is set to 150 in this pack. The mod default is 75, so the muffler button sits further to the right in your inventory than it would in a vanilla-style setup.[5]
  • general.forbiddenSounds is set to "ui.", "music." and "ambient.". This is the sound blacklist, and sounds on it are kept out of the muffler screen.[1][5]
  • general.modsMuffled is an empty list in this pack, so no whole mod is muffled automatically. If you want that, add entries in the form modname:volume, for example "minecraft:50".[5]
Tip: You don't have to edit the file to move the muffler button. Hold the right mouse button over it in your inventory and drag it where you want.[1][5]

Options left at the mod default

These are worth knowing about, and in the pack's config file each one is shown at its mod default.[5]

What changed in Extreme sound muffler between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Extreme Sound Muffler 3.56, the NeoForge build for 1.21. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0.1 or earlier. Here are the notable changes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first.[6]

Mod changelog highlights

  • 3.56 (the version in this pack): fixed Anchors breaking when they were created out of order.[6][7]
  • 3.55: optimization changes.[8]
  • 3.54: added a config option for the max Anchor range and another to mute whole mods. The configs now also have their defaults commented, and the logo is square again for Mod Menu.[9]
  • 3.52: fixed a random crash when opening the muffler screen.[10]
  • 3.51: updated the pt_br translation.[11]
  • 3.49.2: added Turkish localization.[12]

If you use Anchors, 3.54 and 3.56 matter most. 3.54 gave you the max Anchor range option, and 3.56 fixed Anchors breaking when created out of order.[7][9]

Unverified The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so which FTB Skies 2 release picked up each mod version is unverified. Only the 3.56 build in 1.22.0 is confirmed.
