What is Extreme sound muffler?

3 parts

Extreme sound muffler is a client-side mod that lets you selectively muffle sounds in the game. If a machine, mob or block is grating on your ears, you can turn that one sound down or off without touching your master volume.[1]

This pack ships version 3.48.2 of the mod, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21, and it has been part of the pack since version 0.32 or earlier.[2]

How it works

  1. Click the button in your inventory, or assign a key, to open the mod's GUI.[1]
  2. Click the button next to the sound you want to muffle.[1]
  3. Optionally drag the slider to set the volume of that sound instead of silencing it completely.[1]
  4. Optionally press the play button to confirm it is the sound you meant to muffle.[1]

Anchors

Anchors are ranged mufflers, for when you only want a sound quieted in a small area rather than everywhere. In the mod's screen you pick one of the 10 numbered buttons, press the marker-like button on the right panel to set the anchor's position, and then muffle sounds for that spot. There is also an edit button next to the marker where you can set the anchor's name and range, and you can move an anchor at any time by pressing the marker button again.[1]

Who it's for

This is a quality-of-life mod, not a progression mod. It is client-side only, so installing it on a server does nothing, and everything you do with it affects only your own game.[1]

Most of its behaviour is configurable: you can move the muffle and play buttons to the left or right of the screen, disable anchors entirely, blacklist sounds so they never show up in the mod's screen, choose the default muffle volume, and disable the inventory button. There is also a dark mode you can enable in the configs.[1]

Tip: If you like the inventory button but hate where it sits, hold right mouse button over it and drag it wherever you want.[1]

How do you get started with Extreme sound muffler?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: Extreme Sound Muffler is a client-side mod, so there's nothing to craft or gather before you start. It lets you muffle sounds selectively, and you set it up entirely from its screen. Installing it on a server does nothing, because it only runs on your own game.[1]

Unverified I couldn't confirm any in-pack recipes, items or quests for this mod, so there are no recipe blocks here. Everything below comes from the mod's project page and describes the mod's own behavior. Check the pack's config before relying on specific defaults.

Muffle your first sound

  1. Click the muffler button in your inventory, or assign a key to open the screen.[1]
  2. Click the button next to the sound you want to muffle.[1]
  3. Optional: drag the slider to set the volume of that sound instead of silencing it completely.[1]
  4. Optional: press the play button to check that it's the sound you want to muffle.[1]

The play button is worth using. Many sounds have similar names, and a quick test saves you from muting the wrong one.[1]

Use Anchors for local quiet

Anchors are ranged mufflers. They're for when you want to muffle a sound only in a small area, such as around your machine room, while keeping it everywhere else.[1]

  1. Open the muffler screen.[1]
  2. Select one of the 10 numbered buttons.[1]
  3. Press the marker-like button on the right panel to set the Anchor position.[1]
  4. Optional: press the edit Anchor button next to the marker to set the Anchor's name and range.[1]
  5. Muffle the sounds you want for that Anchor.[1]
Tip: You can move an Anchor whenever you like by pressing the marker button again.[1]

Tweak the setup

If the inventory button is in the way, hold right mouse button over it and drag it somewhere else. You can also disable it in the config if you'd rather use a key.[1]

The mod is highly configurable. You can move the muffle and play buttons to the left or right of the screen, disable Anchors, blacklist sounds so they don't appear in the screen, and choose the default muffle volume. It also has a dark mode that you enable in the config.[1]

How does Extreme sound muffler work?

4 parts

Extreme Sound Muffler is a client-side mod, so everything it does happens on your machine only. Installing it on a server does nothing at all, and there are no blocks, machines or power systems involved: the whole mod is a GUI that sits on top of Minecraft's sound engine and turns individual sounds down or off.[1]

Because it runs entirely on the client, your muffle settings are yours alone. Nobody else on a server hears the difference, and you don't need any permissions or server-side support to use it.[1]

The muffler screen

The mod's whole interface lives in one screen. You open it either from the button placed in your inventory or from a key you assign yourself, and from there you work through the list of sounds the game has played.[1]

  1. Click the button in your inventory, or press the key you assigned, to open the GUI.[1]
  2. Click the button next to the sound you want to muffle.[1]
  3. Optionally drag the slider to set the volume of that sound instead of silencing it completely.[1]
  4. Optionally press the play button to confirm the sound is the one you actually meant to target.[1]
Tip: The play button is the fastest way to tell near-identical sound names apart. Preview first, then muffle, and you won't accidentally kill a sound you wanted to keep.[1]

Anchors: muffling by area

Anchors are the mod's ranged mufflers. Instead of silencing a sound everywhere in your world, an Anchor silences it only inside a small area you define, which is what you want when one noisy setup is driving you mad but you still want to hear that sound elsewhere.[1]

  1. Open the ESM screen.[1]
  2. Select one of the 10 numbered buttons, each one is a separate Anchor slot.[1]
  3. Press the marker-like button on the right panel to set the Anchor's position.[1]
  4. Optionally press the edit Anchor button next to the marker to set the Anchor's name and its range.[1]
  5. Muffle the sounds you want gone, and they'll be quiet inside that area only.[1]

Anchors aren't fixed once placed. You can move an Anchor to a new position whenever you like by pressing the marker button again, so it's fine to park one on a temporary build and relocate it later.[1]

The inventory button

The muffler button that appears in your inventory screen is movable. Hold the right mouse button over it and drag it anywhere you like if it's covering something you need. If you'd rather not see it at all, you can turn it off in the config.[1]

What you can configure

Most of the mod's behaviour is adjustable through its own config, which exists in separate Forge and Fabric versions. The options the mod advertises are these.[1]

  • Move the muffle and play buttons to the left or right side of the screen for easier visuals.[1]
  • Disable Anchors entirely if you only want global muffling.[1]
  • Blacklist sounds so they never show up in the ESM screen in the first place.[1]
  • Choose the default muffle volume applied when you mute a new sound.[1]
  • Disable the inventory button.[1]
  • Enable dark mode for the GUI.[1]

Unverified This pack doesn't ship a config file for the mod, so every option above sits at the mod's own defaults until you change it in-game or generate the config yourself. The exact key names and default values aren't confirmed here.

Watch out: Don't bother adding this mod to a server jar, it's client-side only and will have no effect there. Everyone who wants quiet has to install and configure it themselves.[1]

Which Extreme sound muffler config options matter?

2 parts

Extreme sound muffler is a client-side mod, so everything below is about your own game settings. Installing it on a server does nothing. The mod page says most things in it are configurable, and these are the options you're most likely to care about.[1]

What you can change

  • Button placement: you can put the muffle and play buttons on the left or right of the screen, whichever is easier to read.[1]
  • Anchors: you can disable them entirely. Anchors are ranged mufflers that silence a sound only in a small area, and you get 10 numbered slots.[1]
  • Sound blacklist: you can blacklist sounds so they never show up in the ESM screen.[1]
  • Default muffle volume: you can choose the volume a sound gets when you muffle it.[1]
  • Inventory button: you can disable it if you don't want the muffler button in your inventory. You can also hold right mouse button over it and drag it somewhere else.[1]
  • Dark mode: the mod has a dark mode that you turn on in the configs.[1]
Tip: If you don't want to dig through the config, you can assign a key to open the muffler screen instead of using the inventory button.[1]

What this pack sets

Unverified No config file for this mod is available for the pack, so I can't confirm the exact option names or whether the pack changed any of these values from the mod's defaults. Check the mod's config in your own instance before relying on any specific value.

What changed in Extreme sound muffler between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10 0.50 ships Extreme Sound Muffler 3.48.2. The mod was first included in 0.32 or earlier, so it has been in the pack for a good while.[2]

Mod changelog highlights

  • 3.48.2: Implemented NeoForge's in-game config. This is the version your pack currently runs.[2][3]
  • 3.48.1: Fixed a NeoForge problem where, if another mod didn't load properly, Extreme Sound Muffler would crash the game instead of letting it run its course.[4]

I don't have pack changelog entries for this mod, so I can't say which pack release moved it between these versions.[2]
