What is Extreme sound muffler?
2 parts
Extreme Sound Muffler is a quality-of-life mod that lets you selectively muffle sounds in the game. Instead of turning down a whole sound category in the vanilla options, you pick the exact sound you're sick of and quiet it down, or silence it completely.[1]
It's entirely client side. Installing it on a server does nothing, which also means nothing it does is tied to progression: there are no items to craft, no machines to build and no gating. It's available from the moment you load in.[1]
The pack ships version 3.48.3 for NeoForge on 1.21, and it's been part of the pack since a very early build.[2]
Who it's for
If you run a big base full of machines, mob farms or generators, this is the mod that saves your ears. Anyone who plays with the volume up, records video, or just wants a specific repetitive noise gone will get use out of it.[1]
How you use it
- Click the button in your inventory, or bind a key, to open the ESM screen.[1]
- Click the button next to the sound you want to muffle.[1]
- Optionally drag the slider to set how loud that sound still plays, instead of muting it outright.[1]
- Optionally press the play button to confirm you picked the right sound.[1]
There's also an Anchor system for muffling sounds in a small area rather than everywhere. You select one of the 10 numbered buttons in the ESM screen, press the marker button on the right panel to set the Anchor's position, then muffle sounds on it. The edit button next to the marker lets you name the Anchor and set its range, and you can move an Anchor later by pressing the marker button again.[1]
Most of the mod is configurable: you can put the muffle and play buttons on the left or right of the screen, disable Anchors, blacklist sounds so they never show up in the ESM screen, choose the default muffle volume, and turn on dark mode.[1]
How do you get started with Extreme sound muffler?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Good news: Extreme Sound Muffler is a client-side mod, so there's nothing to craft or gather before you start. It lets you muffle sounds selectively, and you set it up entirely from its screen. Installing it on a server does nothing, because it only runs on your own game.[1]
Unverified I couldn't confirm any in-pack recipes, items or quests for this mod, so there are no recipe blocks here. Everything below comes from the mod's project page and describes the mod's own behavior. Check the pack's config before relying on specific defaults.
Muffle your first sound
- Click the muffler button in your inventory, or assign a key to open the screen.[1]
- Click the button next to the sound you want to muffle.[1]
- Optional: drag the slider to set the volume of that sound instead of silencing it completely.[1]
- Optional: press the play button to check that it's the sound you want to muffle.[1]
The play button is worth using. Many sounds have similar names, and a quick test saves you from muting the wrong one.[1]
Use Anchors for local quiet
Anchors are ranged mufflers. They're for when you want to muffle a sound only in a small area, such as around your machine room, while keeping it everywhere else.[1]
- Open the muffler screen.[1]
- Select one of the 10 numbered buttons.[1]
- Press the marker-like button on the right panel to set the Anchor position.[1]
- Optional: press the edit Anchor button next to the marker to set the Anchor's name and range.[1]
- Muffle the sounds you want for that Anchor.[1]
Tweak the setup
If the inventory button is in the way, hold right mouse button over it and drag it somewhere else. You can also disable it in the config if you'd rather use a key.[1]
The mod is highly configurable. You can move the muffle and play buttons to the left or right of the screen, disable Anchors, blacklist sounds so they don't appear in the screen, and choose the default muffle volume. It also has a dark mode that you enable in the config.[1]
How does Extreme sound muffler work?
4 parts
Extreme Sound Muffler is a client-side mod, so everything it does happens on your machine only. Installing it on a server does nothing at all, and there are no blocks, machines or power systems involved: the whole mod is a GUI that decides which sounds your client is allowed to play.[1]
The muffler screen
You open the mod's screen either by clicking the button in your inventory or by assigning a key to it. Inside, you get a list of sounds with a button next to each one; clicking that button muffles the sound. Each entry also has a slider so you can set exactly how loud the sound stays instead of silencing it completely, and a play button so you can preview a sound and confirm it's the one you actually want to deal with.[1]
Anchors: muffling by area
Anchors are the mod's ranged mufflers. Instead of silencing a sound everywhere in the world, an anchor muffles it only inside a small area you define, which is what you want for a noisy machine room or a single farm you don't want to hear from across the base.[1]
- Open the muffler screen.[1]
- Select one of the 10 numbered buttons, each one is a separate anchor slot.[1]
- Press the marker-like button on the right panel to set the anchor's position at where you're standing.[1]
- Optionally press the edit anchor button, next to the marker, to give the anchor a name and set its range.[1]
- Muffle the sounds you want while that anchor is selected, and they'll only be quieted inside its range.[1]
Anchors aren't permanent placements. You can move one whenever you like by pressing the marker button again, which re-anchors it to your current spot, handy when you rebuild a farm or move your base.[1]
The inventory button
The muffler button that shows up in your inventory screen is movable and optional. Hold right mouse button over it and drag it wherever you want if it's sitting on top of something important, or turn it off entirely in the config and use a keybind instead.[1]
What's configurable
The mod exposes a fair amount of behaviour through its config file, so you can tune the interface and the defaults rather than fighting them.[1]
- Put the muffle and play buttons on the left or right side of the screen, whichever reads better for you.[1]
- Disable anchors entirely if you only ever want global muffling.[1]
- Blacklist sounds so they never show up in the muffler screen at all, which keeps the list manageable in a big pack.[1]
- Set the default muffle volume that new entries start at.[1]
- Disable the inventory button.[1]
- Enable dark mode for the GUI.[1]
Unverified The pack ships no config file for this mod, so the mod's own defaults apply until you open the settings yourself. The exact option names, value ranges and where the file is written aren't covered by the sources available here.
Which Extreme sound muffler config options matter?
Extreme Sound Muffler is a client-side mod, so its settings live in your own config file rather than on the server. Installing it on a server does nothing at all, which means every option here is yours alone to tweak and nothing you change affects other players.[1]
The mod ships separate config files for Forge and Fabric, and most of the interesting behaviour is adjustable from there. These are the options players usually end up hunting for.[1]
- Dark mode for the ESM screen, which is off until you turn it on in the config.[1]
- The inventory button, which you can disable entirely if you would rather not see the muffler icon on your inventory screen.[1]
- Button placement, letting you move the muffle and play buttons to the left or right side of the screen for easier reading.[1]
- Anchors, the ranged mufflers, which can be disabled if you only ever want global muffling.[1]
- A sound blacklist, so noisy entries you never want to touch stop cluttering the ESM screen.[1]
- The default muffle volume applied when you mute a new sound.[1]
Unverified The pack does not ship a config file for this mod in the sources available here, so the exact default values (including the default muffle volume and whether dark mode, anchors or the inventory button start enabled) could not be confirmed. Open the config in-game or in your instance folder to see what you are actually running.
What changed in Extreme sound muffler between versions?
1 part
All the Mods 10 2.11 ships Extreme Sound Muffler 3.48.3. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 0.32 or earlier, so it is a long-standing part of the modpack.[2]
Mod changelog highlights
- 3.48.1: Fixed a NeoForge problem where, if another mod didn't load properly, Extreme Sound Muffler would crash the game instead of letting it carry on.[3]
- 3.48.2: Added support for NeoForge's in-game config screen.[4]
- 3.48.3: Fixed the mod trying to load on the server side. This is the version in 2.11.[2][5]
Unverified No pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so any pack-specific changes to it across All the Mods 10 releases are unconfirmed.
