What is Extreme sound muffler?
3 parts
Extreme Sound Muffler is a client-side mod that lets you selectively silence sounds in the game. Instead of turning down a whole sound category in the vanilla options, you pick the exact sound that's bothering you and mute it or drop its volume. The pack ships version 3.48.2, and it has been part of the pack since an earlier release.[1][2]
Because it's client-side only, it changes nothing about progression, crafting or world generation. Installing it on a server does nothing at all, so it's purely a quality-of-life tool for your own ears.[1]
Who it's for
If you've built a giant automated base, this is the mod you reach for. Any machine, mob or block that loops an annoying sound can be muffled individually, and you can leave everything else in the pack sounding normal.[1]
How you use it
- Open the GUI with the button in your inventory, or bind a key to it.[1]
- Click the button next to the sound you want to muffle.[1]
- Optionally drag the slider to set that sound's volume instead of silencing it completely.[1]
- Optionally press the play button to confirm you picked the right sound.[1]
There are also Anchors: ranged mufflers you place at a position so a sound is only quieted in a small area around it. You get 10 numbered anchor slots, and each one can be named and given a range. The anchor's position can be moved again at any time with the marker button.[1]
Configuration
Most of the mod is configurable. You can move the muffle and play buttons to the left or right side of the screen, disable anchors entirely, blacklist sounds so they never show up in the ESM screen, choose the default muffle volume, and turn off the inventory button. There's also a dark mode you enable in the configs.[1]
How do you get started with Extreme sound muffler?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Good news: Extreme Sound Muffler is a client-side mod, so there's nothing to craft or gather before you start. It lets you muffle sounds selectively, and you set it up entirely from its screen. Installing it on a server does nothing, because it only runs on your own game.[1]
Unverified I couldn't confirm any in-pack recipes, items or quests for this mod, so there are no recipe blocks here. Everything below comes from the mod's project page and describes the mod's own behavior. Check the pack's config before relying on specific defaults.
Muffle your first sound
- Click the muffler button in your inventory, or assign a key to open the screen.[1]
- Click the button next to the sound you want to muffle.[1]
- Optional: drag the slider to set the volume of that sound instead of silencing it completely.[1]
- Optional: press the play button to check that it's the sound you want to muffle.[1]
The play button is worth using. Many sounds have similar names, and a quick test saves you from muting the wrong one.[1]
Use Anchors for local quiet
Anchors are ranged mufflers. They're for when you want to muffle a sound only in a small area, such as around your machine room, while keeping it everywhere else.[1]
- Open the muffler screen.[1]
- Select one of the 10 numbered buttons.[1]
- Press the marker-like button on the right panel to set the Anchor position.[1]
- Optional: press the edit Anchor button next to the marker to set the Anchor's name and range.[1]
- Muffle the sounds you want for that Anchor.[1]
Tweak the setup
If the inventory button is in the way, hold right mouse button over it and drag it somewhere else. You can also disable it in the config if you'd rather use a key.[1]
The mod is highly configurable. You can move the muffle and play buttons to the left or right of the screen, disable Anchors, blacklist sounds so they don't appear in the screen, and choose the default muffle volume. It also has a dark mode that you enable in the config.[1]
How does Extreme sound muffler work?
5 parts
Extreme Sound Muffler has no machines, no power and no items to craft. It's a client-side mod that lets you selectively muffle sounds, and everything it does happens in a single GUI plus a config file. Installing it on a server does nothing at all, so the whole system lives on your end.[1]
The muffler screen
The mod works off one screen that lists sounds you can silence. You open it with the button in your inventory, or by assigning a key to it.[1]
- Click the button in your inventory, or press the key you assigned, to open the GUI.[1]
- Click the button next to the sound you want to muffle.[1]
- Optionally drag the slider to set the volume for that sound instead of silencing it outright.[1]
- Optionally press the play button to confirm it's the sound you actually meant to target.[1]
The volume a sound drops to when you hit the mute button comes from general.defaultMuteVolume, which this pack leaves at 0, full silence. The option accepts anything from 0.0 to 0.9, so if you'd rather turn sounds down than off, raise it and every new mute starts at that level.[1][3]
Anchors: muffling by area
Anchors are ranged mufflers. Instead of silencing a sound everywhere, an anchor silences it inside a small area, which is what you want for a noisy machine room or a mob farm you'd rather not hear from across the base.[1]
- Open the muffler screen.[1]
- Select one of the 10 numbered buttons, each one is a separate anchor slot.[1]
- Press the marker-like button on the right panel to set the anchor's position.[1]
- Optionally press the edit anchor button next to the marker to give it a name and a range.[1]
- Muffle sounds while that anchor is selected, and the muffling only applies in that area.[1]
Anchors aren't locked in place once set. Press the marker button again at any time to move the selected anchor to wherever you're standing.[1]
The whole anchor system can be switched off with Anchors.disableAnchors. This pack ships it as false, so anchors are available to you out of the box.[1][3]
The sound list and the blacklist
Not every sound shows up in the muffler screen. general.forbiddenSounds holds a list of name fragments that get filtered out, and this pack sets it to "ui.", "music." and "ambient.". That keeps interface clicks, the music tracks and ambient cave noises off the list, so you can't accidentally mute the parts of the soundscape most people want to keep.[1][3]
There's an escape hatch. general.lawfulAllList controls whether the "ALL" sounds list is allowed to include blacklisted entries. This pack leaves it false, so the ALL list stays clean. Flip it to true if you specifically need to reach one of the filtered categories.[1][3]
The blacklist is a plain comma-separated list of sound names, so you can add your own entries if a particular category keeps cluttering the screen.[1]
The inventory button
The muffler button sits in your inventory screen by default, and this pack keeps it there in both the survival and creative inventories, inventory_button.disableInventoryButton and inventory_button.disableCreativeInventoryButton are both false.[1][3]
If the button overlaps something from another mod, you don't have to edit anything by hand. Hold right mouse button over the muffler button and drag it wherever you want; the new position is saved back to the config.[1][3]
In this pack the survival inventory button starts at X 75, Y 7, set by inventory_button.invButtonX and inventory_button.invButtonY. The creative inventory button starts at X 2, Y 2 via inventory_button.creativeInvButtonX and inventory_button.creativeInvButtonY. Both coordinates accept very large values in either direction, so dragging can't push the button somewhere the config won't store.[1][3]
Screen layout options
Two options change how the muffler screen looks. general.leftButtons moves the muffle and play buttons to the left side of the GUI for easier visuals, and this pack leaves it false, so they sit on the right. general.useDarkTheme switches the screen to dark mode, and this pack ships with it off.[1][3]
Which Extreme sound muffler config options matter?
3 parts
Extreme Sound Muffler is client-side only, so everything here lives in one file, config/extremesoundmuffler-client.toml, and installing the mod on a server does nothing. Here are the options you're most likely to touch and the values this pack sets.[1][3]
Muting and the sound list
- general.defaultMuteVolume is 0 in this pack. That's the volume a sound gets when you press its mute button, and the allowed range is 0.0 to 0.9.[3]
- general.forbiddenSounds is set to "ui.", "music." and "ambient.". This is the blacklist, and blacklisted sounds are kept from appearing in the muffler screen.[1][3]
- general.lawfulAllList is false, so the "ALL" sounds list does not include the blacklisted sounds. Set it to true if you want them to show up there.[3]
Inventory button
- inventory_button.disableInventoryButton and inventory_button.disableCreativeInventoryButton are both false, so the muffler button shows in the player inventory and the creative inventory. Set either to true if you'd rather not have it.[1][3]
- The player inventory button sits at inventory_button.invButtonX = 75 and inventory_button.invButtonY = 7.[3]
- The creative inventory button sits at inventory_button.creativeInvButtonX = 2 and inventory_button.creativeInvButtonY = 2.[3]
Anchors and interface
- Anchors.disableAnchors is false, so Anchors (the ranged mufflers) are enabled.[1][3]
- general.leftButtons is false, so the muffle and play buttons stay on their usual side. Set it to true to move them to the left of the GUI.[3]
- general.showTip is true, so tips are shown in the muffler screen.[3]
- general.useDarkTheme is false, so the dark theme is off. Flip it to true if you want it.[1][3]
Unverified The sources list the values this pack uses but not the mod's own defaults, so it's unconfirmed which of these options the pack changed from the mod defaults.
What changed in Extreme sound muffler between versions?
1 part
All the Mods 10 0.51 ships Extreme sound muffler 3.48.2. The mod was first included in the pack in 0.32 or earlier.[2]
Recent mod releases
- 3.48.2: Implemented NeoForge's in game config. This is the version in the pack at 0.51.[2][4]
- 3.48.1: Fixed a NeoForge problem where, if another mod didn't load properly, Extreme sound muffler would crash the game instead of letting it run its course.[5]
Those are the only mod changelog entries I have for this section, so older releases aren't covered here.[4][5]
