What is Crafting on a Stick?

2 parts

Crafting on a Stick does exactly what the name promises: it lets you craft without placing a crafting table on the ground. Instead of running back to a block every time you need to craft something, you hold a workbench on a stick and use it straight from your hand.[1]

It isn't just the crafting table, either. The mod puts several workstations on a stick, and using any of them in your hand opens that workbench's screen.[1]

This pack runs version 1.21.0.2 of the mod.[2]

Who it's for

It's for anyone who hates having to run to a block just to craft. The pack's quest book puts it nicely: the Crafting Table works as a portable crafting table.[3]

Where it fits in the pack

You meet this mod right at the start. The quest "Crafting, but on a Stick" quest sits in the pack's first chapter, "Chapter 1: The Beginning". It unlocks after the quest "Putting the Craft in Minecraft", and you complete it by getting a Crafting Table.[3]

Tip: You can also put your favourite workbench on a stick in its Curios slot and open it with a keybind. The mod's default key for this is V, and the pack's quest suggests setting up the keybind yourself, so check your controls.[1][3]

How do you get started with Crafting on a Stick?

4 parts

The first thing to make with this mod is the Crafting Table. It works as a portable crafting table, so you can craft without running to a placed block. The pack even gives it its own quest, "Crafting, but on a Stick" quest, in Chapter 1: The Beginning, and it unlocks after the quest Putting the Craft in Minecraft.[3]

Step 1: Make the Crafting Table on a Stick

The pack has changed this recipe from the mod's own version. It uses a stick plus any block from the crafting-table workstation tag, so you aren't locked to a plain vanilla table. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[4]

The pack also adds a second route through woodcutting recipes that give you the same item. They cover a huge range of logs, woods, stems and hyphae from many different wood types, including modded ones like Alpha Log and Echo Log. If a sawmill is part of your early setup, you can use whichever wood you have lying around.[4]

Step 2: Use it

Hold the item and use it to open the crafting grid, with no placed table needed.[1]

Step 3: Put it in your Curios slot

The quest recommends putting the item in your Curios slot and setting a keybind to open it. The mod's project page lists V as the default key. Since you can then craft from anywhere without even holding it, this is the setup I'd go for.[1][3]

Tip: The quest task is the Crafting Table on a Stick item itself, so crafting it completes the quest.[3]

What about the other sticks?

The mod's project page says it adds several more workstations on a stick: an anvil, loom, grindstone, cartography table, stonecutter and smithing table.[1]

How does Crafting on a Stick work?

3 parts

This mod is much simpler than a machine or multiblock mod. It puts vanilla workbenches on a stick, so you can use them straight from your hand without placing a block. The sources don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or item automation for it, so there's nothing to set up here.[1]

Using a workbench on a stick

Use one of the items in your hand to open that workbench's interface. The mod adds a crafting table, anvil, loom, grindstone, cartography table, stonecutter and smithing table on a stick.[1]

The mod is also compatible with Curios. You can put your favorite workbench on a stick in the designated curios slot and press the keybind to open it. The default key is V.[1]

Crafting them

Each one is a shaped recipe that combines a stick with the matching vanilla workbench. There are separate entries for the chipped and damaged anvil, giving Chipped Anvil and Damaged Anvil alongside the regular Anvil.[4]

The other stick versions are Loom, Grindstone, Cartography Table, Stonecutter and Smithing Table. All of these use the mod's own recipes, with no pack changes.[4]

What the pack changes

The pack changed the recipe for Crafting Table. Instead of one specific table, it takes a stick together with any item from the player workstation crafting tables tag.[4]

This is the pack's changed version of the crafting table on a stick recipe.

The pack also adds a lot of woodcutting-type recipes in the sawmill namespace that output the crafting table on a stick. Each one takes the log and wood variants of a single tree type, such as the peach tree. The sources show trees from several different mods, and the full list is too long to reproduce here.[4]

Unverified The pack has no config files for this mod and the sources here show no in-game descriptions for it, so any behaviour beyond opening the workbench from your hand or the curios slot is unverified.

How do you progress through Crafting on a Stick?

3 parts

There is no tier ladder to climb here. In this pack, Crafting on a Stick comes down to a single item, Crafting Table, which works as a portable crafting table. Everything below is what the pack's quest and recipes show.[3][4]

The quest step

The pack's quest "Crafting, but on a Stick" quest sits in the chapter called The Beginning (Chapter 1). It unlocks after the quest Putting the Craft in Minecraft, and its task is to get the portable crafting table.[3]

Tip: The quest suggests putting the item in your Curios slot and setting a keybind to open it. That way you can craft without placing a block or running back to one.[3]

Crafting it in this pack

The pack changed the main crafting recipe for this item, so don't rely on the mod's default. The block below shows the exact in-pack recipe.[4]

Sawmill shortcuts

The pack also adds woodcutting recipes that make the same item. They take logs, wood, stems and hyphae from many different wood types, including modded ones, so you can use whichever wood you have on hand. Here is the one for jungle wood as an example.[4]

How does Crafting on a Stick work with other mods?

2 parts

The main way this mod connects with the rest of the pack is through wood. The pack adds woodcutting recipes of the sawmill recipe type that turn logs and wood from lots of other mods into the Crafting Table. So whatever trees you find while exploring, you can probably turn them into a portable crafting table.[4]

These recipes are marked as added by the pack, so they are pack-specific. Don't assume other installs of the mod have them.[4]

Which mods' wood works

The sawmill recipes cover wood from many different mods. The ones in the recipe list use these namespaces: productivetrees, biomeswevegone, regions_unexplored, deeperdarker, forbidden_arcanus, integrateddynamics, evilcraft, twilightforest, undergarden and eternal_starlight.[4]

The recipes are written per tree type, and what each one accepts depends on the tree. Productive Trees woods accept the log, stripped log, wood and stripped wood, for example Peach Log and Peach Stripped Wood. Biomes We've Gone trees such as Aspen Log take the log and wood forms.[4]

A Productive Trees example: the log, stripped log, wood and stripped wood of peach all work.

Fungus-style trees are covered too. Fungyss Stem and Fungyss Hyphae have a recipe, as do Blooming Stem and Stripped Blooming Stem. Some trees only accept one form: the recipe for Alpha Log lists just the log.[4]

The Regions Unexplored Alpha Log recipe accepts only the log.

Tip: Each tree type has its own recipe, so check the recipe viewer for the exact wood you're holding. Some trees take the log, stripped log, wood and stripped wood, and others take only the log or the log and wood.[4]

Curios and the early quest

The mod is compatible with Curios. You can put your favorite workbench on a stick in the designated Curios slot and press the keybind to open it. The default key is V.[1]

The quest "Crafting, but on a Stick" quest in Chapter 1 gives the same tip. It asks you to obtain the Crafting Table, which works as a portable crafting table. It comes after the quest "Putting the Craft in Minecraft".[3]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Crafting on a Stick?

1 part

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

This mod only shows up in one quest in the pack, and it sits in the very first chapter, "Chapter 1: The Beginning". So you'll meet it early in your run.[5]

Chapter 1: The Beginning

The quest is "Crafting, but on a Stick" quest. It unlocks after you finish the quest "Putting the Craft in Minecraft", so you'll do that one first.[5]

The task is simple: you submit a Crafting Table. The quest text describes it as a portable crafting table, so you don't have to run back to a block every time you want to craft.[5]

Tip: The quest suggests putting the item in your Curios slot and setting a keybind to open it. That way it's always at hand.[5]

Unverified The sources don't say what rewards this quest gives, or whether any later quests depend on it.

What changed in Crafting on a Stick between versions?

1 part

Crafting on a Stick has been part of All the Mods 10 for a long time. It was first included in version 2.2 or earlier, and it is still in the pack as of 4.11.[2]

Changes across pack releases

  • All the Mods 10 2.47 updated Crafting on a Stick from 1.21.0.1 to 1.21.0.2.[6]
  • All the Mods 10 4.11 ships Crafting on a Stick 1.21.0.2 (file crafting_on_a_stick-1.21.0.2.jar), so the mod version hasn't changed since the 2.47 update.[2][6]

Unverified What actually changed between 1.21.0.1 and 1.21.0.2 isn't covered here, because there are no stored changelogs for the mod's own jars. Any fixes or tweaks in that update are unverified.
