What is Railcraft Reborn?
1 part
Railcraft Reborn is a port of the classic Railcraft mod to modern Minecraft. This pack includes version 1.2.10 of it, and it has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier.[1][2]
The mod is all about building a proper railway. You craft railbeds from ties and combine them with rails to make many different track types. On top of that it adds locomotives and other carts, loaders and unloaders, a signalling system and multi-block machines.[1][3]
Where the quest book puts it
The pack has a quest chapter called "RailCraft" with 52 quests. Only some of the quest text is covered here, so 21 of them are best read in the quest book itself. From what I can see, the chapter opens with a "RailCraft" quest, and the rest branches out from there.[4]
- "Rails!" quest comes right after it and leads on to "Reinforced Tracks" quest, "Strap Iron Tracks" quest, "Electric Tracks" quest and "High Speed Electric Tracks" quest.[4]
- "Tracks!" quest also follows it and leads to the track kit quests, such as "Track Kits for stopping Carts" quest and "Track Kits for using Redstone" quest.[4]
- "'Switch em up'" quest about the spike mauls follows it too, and it leads to "Wye Tracks" quest and "Junction Tracks" quest.[4]
- A "Machines" quest leads to the multi-block quests: "Water Tank" quest, "Blast (Steel) Furnace" quest, "Crusher" quest, "Coke Oven" quest and "Boilers" quest. "Steam Oven" quest comes after Boilers.[4]
- A "Carts 'N' Trains!" quest leads to "Steam Locomotive" quest, "Cart Dispenser" quest, "Item Loader" quest, "Item Unloader" quest, "Fluid Loader" quest and "Frames" quest.[4]
The quest text I have doesn't connect this chapter to the ATM Star path.[4]
How do you get started with Railcraft Reborn?
6 parts
Railcraft Reborn turns track building into a small industry. You craft railbeds from ties, then combine those railbeds with rails to get tracks. The pack's quest book is a handy checklist, and its first two quests are "Rails!" quest and "Tracks!" quest. Here is the order I'd go in.[3][4]
Start with cheap tracks
Begin with Abandoned Track. It needs less wood and creosote than iron tracks, so it suits you when you are short on creosote or time. It can also stay suspended, which helps when you need to cross a canyon. The quest book covers it in "Abandoned Tracks" quest.[4][5]

Build a Coke Oven
The Coke Oven gives you creosote, which the cheaper track types lean on less than iron tracks do. Build it from Coke Oven Bricks: 26 bricks in a 3x3x3 cube with the center hollow. You'll know it is finished when you can open its GUI and it all shares one texture. Put in coal to get coal coke and creosote, or logs to get charcoal and creosote. The quest is "Coke Oven" quest, which comes after the Machines quest.[4][6]
Coking is slow, so plan on several ovens if you want a lot of rails. Leave at least one tile between ovens, because they can't be built adjacent to each other.[6]
Build a Blast Furnace for steel
The Blast Furnace turns iron into steel and also gives granulated sand. It takes 34 Blast Furnace Bricks, built 3 blocks wide, 3 long and 4 tall, with the two center blocks hollow. Like the oven, it can't be built adjacent to another furnace. The quest is "Blast (Steel) Furnace" quest.[4][7]

Get a Manual Rolling Machine
The Manual Rolling Machine is a small crafting machine for rolling various shapes of metal, and the quest book describes it as the machine for many Railcraft materials. If the grid holds enough for more than one craft, it autocrafts while you keep looking at it. If it only holds enough for one cycle, click the output display to force the craft. See a quest in "RailCraft".[4][8]
Make a Spike Maul for intersections
Craft an Iron Spike Maul to switch the mode of normal tracks. With it you can turn a regular track into turnouts, wyes and junctions, which is how you build proper intersections. The quest is "'Switch em up'" quest.[4][8]

Add track kits
Once you have rails, make Track Parts. Track kits are crafted from them and combined with rails to make special rails for stopping, moving and detecting carts. You can apply kits to flex tracks such as the standard iron track. A good first one is the Buffer Stop Track Kit, an end cap that stops carts at the end of a line, so they don't roll off or explode.[4][9][10][11]

How does Railcraft Reborn work?
5 parts
Railcraft Reborn is more than tracks. Its in-game guide covers a whole industrial chain of multiblock structures, from ovens and furnaces to boilers and tanks. This section walks through how those systems work, then the signalling boxes and a few track behaviours worth knowing. The sizes and behaviours below come from the mod's own in-game guide. The pack's recipe changes are called out where they show up.[1][12]
Processing multiblocks
The Coke Oven is a 3x3x3 brick structure, hollow in the middle. It turns coal into coal coke, or wood into charcoal, and gives you creosote oil as a byproduct. It holds 64,000 units of creosote oil, and you can pull that out with buckets or glass bottles that hold 1,000 units each. Filled buckets don't stack but filled bottles do. Two ovens can't touch, so leave at least one block between them.[6]
Coke is slow to make, so the guide suggests building several ovens if you want a lot of rail.[6]
The Blast Furnace is a 3x3x4 brick structure, hollow in the middle, that converts iron ingots into steel ingots. Like the oven, two furnaces can't be adjacent.[7]
The Rock Crusher is a 3x2x2 structure for processing various materials, and it can't be built next to another Crusher either. The pack changes two of its recipes. Coal blocks crush into Coal Dust, and coal ores crush into coal, diamond, coal dust and Sulfur Dust. Crushing charcoal into Charcoal Dust is the mod's own recipe, unchanged.[11][13]

The Steam Oven is a 2x2x2 structure that cooks items when you feed it steam. It handles up to 9 items at once in 256 ticks, which is 12.8 seconds.[14]
Steam power
A Steam Boiler is built from the bottom up. First comes the Firebox. A solid-fueled one burns normal furnace fuels such as charcoal or coal coke. A liquid-fueled one burns creosote oil, bio-fuel or fuel. Boiler sizes are 1x1, 2x2 and 3x3, and above the Firebox you add a Boiler Tank.[15]
The tank size you can use depends on the Firebox. A 1x1 Firebox takes a 1 cubic meter tank, a 2x2 takes 8 or 12, and a 3x3 takes 18, 27 or 36. High Pressure tanks produce twice the steam, but Low Pressure tanks are generally more efficient. Bigger boilers use fuel more efficiently, so one large boiler beats several small ones.[15]
The Steam Turbine turns steam into electrical power. It uses the same 2x3x2 pattern as the Crusher and only works with a Turbine Rotor installed. A rotor should last several real-time days of constant use, and you can repair it by combining two rotors with the vanilla repair mechanic.[16]
The Water Tank is a 3x3x3 hollow structure made of Water Tank Siding. It passively collects water and holds 400 buckets. How fast it refills depends on the biome, the weather and whether the tank can see the sky, so the guide advises against running your railway through a desert.[17]
Tanks
Iron Tanks come in 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 and 9x9 footprints, with a height from 4 to 8 blocks. Lay down a frame of Iron Tank Wall blocks, then fill the top, bottom and sides with any mix of Wall, Gauge or Valve. To stack tanks, place Valve blocks in the centre where the tanks touch.[18]
The pack adds its own recipe for White Iron Tank Wall. Coloured gauges such as Black Iron Tank Gauge have their own recipe too.[11]

Signalling
Signal boxes are part of the Signalling module and are used to operate signals. Two tools set them up. The Signal Block Surveyor pairs two Block Signals: right-click one, then the other, and a message tells you whether the Signal Block is valid. The Signal Tuner pairs a Controller with a Receiver in the same way, and right-clicking either one clears an existing pairing.[19][20][21]
- Signal Receiver Box: pair it with a Controller, then pick in its GUI which Signal Aspects should emit a redstone current.[22]
- Signal Controller Box: placed next to a Receiver Box, it sends that Receiver's aspect on to a paired Receiver. Several Controllers can sit next to one Receiver, so one Block Signal can drive multiple Switch Motors or Distant Signals.[23]
- Signal Capacitor Box: placed next to a Receiver or Relay Box, it emits a redstone pulse of adjustable length. Rising Edge pulses when the neighbour starts emitting. Falling Edge holds the pulse until the set time after the neighbour stops, which creates a delay.[24]
- Signal Block Relay Box: pairs with up to two other Block Signals or Relays, and works as an end cap or an extender. As an extender it lets a Signal Block wrap around corners and still act as one block. It can also be set to emit redstone and act as a Controller.[25]
Two Controller Box details are easy to miss. With two Receivers next to it, a Controller sends the most restrictive aspect of the two. A Controller also can't be linked to two Receivers, and placing a Receiver next to a Controller only passes information, it doesn't link them.[23]
The Analog Signal Controller Box reads redstone strength instead of simple on or off. In its GUI you can set, for example, GREEN at strength 5, RED at 0 and OFF at 15. The pack changes both this recipe and the Block Signal recipe.[11][26]

Tools and tracks
The Charge Meter measures Railcraft Charge in machines, wires and tracks, and it records network usage over a 5-second period. Trackman's Goggles show hidden things, including the signals that link a Controller and Receiver, and they display one aura at a time.[27][28]
The Crowbar does a lot. It removes modern rails, adjusts rails (usually by reversing direction), gives carts a small boost when you right-click them, and links carts with shift right-click.[29]
Tracks are built by crafting railbeds from ties and combining them with rails. Each track type has its own speed, conduction, collision and explosion resistance.[3][30]
- Abandoned tracks can stay suspended, which helps across canyons, and carts can derail on them. Once a cart goes faster than 0.35 block per tick, every tick carries a small chance of derailing, and that chance builds up the longer it keeps that speed. If one cart in a train derails, the whole train does.[5]
- Control Track boosts carts in one direction and slows carts going the other way. Powering it reverses the direction, and power propagates for up to sixteen blocks either way.[31]
- Elevator Track can be placed vertically. Powered sections lift carts and unpowered ones lower them.[32]
- Turnout Track can't be operated directly by redstone. It needs a Switch Motor placed opposite the turnout, or a Switch Lever for a manual switch.[33]

Unverified The in-game guide says High Speed Track lets carts travel 2.5 times faster than normal and that this speed is configurable, but the sources here show no config file for this mod in the pack, so the pack's actual value is unconfirmed.
How do you progress through Railcraft Reborn?
5 parts
Railcraft's progression in this pack is mostly a ladder of rails and tracks, with a handful of multiblock machines you build to unlock the better tiers. The quest chapter is called RailCraft, and the main branches are "Rails!" quest for rails and "Tracks!" quest for track kits. The machine quests hang off a Machines quest.[4]
Step 1: Rolling machines and rails
The Rails! quest accepts any of six rail types: Wooden Rail, Standard Rail, Advanced Rail, Reinforced Rail, High Speed Rail and Electric Rail. The quest warns that upgraded rails need special items, and some of those need machines to make.[4]
That machine is the Manual Rolling Machine. Put a recipe in and it autocrafts while you keep looking at it, but if you walk away it aborts and you must craft the last one by hand. The Powered Rolling Machine is the upgrade: it crafts everything automatically, but it needs power. If you need iron plates early, the Iron Plates quest in Chapter 2 lists the Manual Rolling Machine as one of the options.[4][34]

Step 2: Track tiers
Tracks are what you actually lay down, and each tier has its own quest after Rails!. "Abandoned Tracks" quest and "Strap Iron Tracks" quest are the budget options. Abandoned Tracks can bridge a few blocks without support but risk derailing your cart. Strap Iron Tracks are much slower but have no risk of derailment.[4]
"Reinforced Tracks" quest are the upgrade over normal rails: slightly faster and they don't blow up. "High Speed Tracks" quest are faster again, but they need Track Kits to build up speed and you have to be careful on corners.[4]
The electric branch is separate. "Electric Tracks" quest are for Electric Locomotives, they must be powered by Frames, and they will hurt you if you touch them. "High Speed Electric Tracks" quest are faster still, and they need both the High Speed requirements and the Electric requirements, so Speed Boosts and Frames.[4]

Step 3: Steel and the processing machines
Most of the mid-game machines are multiblocks. The Blast Furnace turns iron into steel. Build it from 34 Blast Furnace Bricks in a 3x3x4 shape with the two center blocks hollow. See "Blast (Steel) Furnace" quest.[4][7]
The Coke Oven makes coal coke and liquid creosote. You need 26 Coke Oven Bricks in a 3x3x3 shape with the center hollow. Logs go in for charcoal and creosote. See "Coke Oven" quest.[4][6]
The Crusher is a 3x2x2 multiblock that turns blocks and ingots into crafting materials, and it needs power. The pack changes its recipe from the mod default, so use the recipe below rather than anything you remember from the base mod. See "Crusher" quest.[4][11]

Step 4: Steam power
Boilers come next, in "Boilers" quest. You need a firebox on the bottom and a boiler tank on top. A 1x1 firebox takes a 1x1 boiler, a 2x2 firebox takes a 2x2x3 boiler, and a 3x3 firebox takes a 3x3x4 boiler. The solid Solid Fueled Firebox burns anything a furnace can use, while the Fluid Fueled Firebox burns creosote. High pressure tanks make twice the steam, while low pressure tanks are generally more efficient.[4][15]
Steam then unlocks two more machines. The Steam Oven is a 2x2x2 machine that acts as a furnace powered by steam, in "Steam Oven" quest. The Steam Turbine turns steam into FE and EU, and it only works with a Turbine Rotor installed. See "Steam Turbine" quest.[4][14][16]
Step 5: Special tracks, kits and carts
Spike Mauls (Iron Spike Maul, Steel Spike Maul and Diamond Spike Maul) switch normal tracks between modes. That gives you Turnout, Wye and Junction tracks for intersections, and the Switch Track Lever lets you move between the lanes. Start at "'Switch em up'" quest.[4]
Track Kits are crafted together with rails to make special rails, starting with Track Parts. The kit quests split them into groups: redstone use, stopping carts, moving carts, moving entities, plus the One-Way, Routing, Coupler and Whistle kits.[4]
The Carts 'N' Trains quests open the logistics side: the Steam Locomotive runs on water and furnace fuel, and the Cart Dispenser and Train Dispenser put carts on the rails. The Item Loader and Item Unloader fill and empty carts, and the Fluid Loader fills locomotives. A Water Tank, built as a hollow 3x3x3 of Water Tank Siding, supplies water. For automation, the Tunnel Bore needs a bore head, fuel and rails.[4][17]
At the top end, the Electric Locomotive needs nothing loaded into it. It runs off power from the Frame blocks beneath Electric Tracks, and it can only run on Electric Tracks. See "Electric Locomotive" quest.[4]

How does Railcraft Reborn work with other mods?
4 parts
Railcraft Reborn mostly stands on its own, but this pack wires it into several other mods. The links below come from in-pack recipes and quests that use items from both sides.[11][34]
Creative Locomotive
The pack adds its own recipe for the Creative Locomotive. It uses an Unobtainium Gear and an ATM Star Shard, plus a Minecart, a Netherite Ingot, a Redstone Lamp and Railcraft's own Charge Motor. So this locomotive depends on items from other mods.[11]

Steel from the Blast Furnace
The pack changed the Blast Furnace recipes for Railcraft's steel tools and armor, and for the Iron Crowbar. Blasting any of these gives you the Steel Ingot from All The Ores. That covers the Steel Pickaxe, Steel Axe, Steel Hoe, Steel Sword, Steel Shears, Steel Helmet, Steel Chestplate, Steel Leggings and Steel Boots.[11]
Quests that mix mods
The quest "Iron Plates" quest has a first task that accepts a Forge Hammer from Modern Industrialization, an Engineer's Hammer from Immersive Engineering, or Railcraft's Manual Rolling Machine. Its second task is an Iron Plate. So the Rolling Machine is one of the tools the quest accepts for that step.[34]
Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Railcraft Reborn?
7 parts
Railcraft has its own quest chapter in the pack, called RailCraft, and it also shows up in one quest in Chapter 2: The Cool Parts. Most quests ask you to obtain a single item. Where a quest accepts several items, any one of them counts. Below I walk through them roughly in the order the quest lines unlock.[4][34]
Starting out: rails, tracks and the crowbar
One quest has no prerequisite listed and asks for the Seasons Crowbar. Its text says the crowbar has modes that change the look of a Locomotive: the default, none, Halloween and Christmas. Quest a quest in "RailCraft" is untitled.[4]
The main line begins with "Rails!" quest and "Tracks!" quest. Rails! takes any one of the wooden, standard, advanced, reinforced, high speed or electric rails. Tracks! asks for Track Parts. Both unlock after the RailCraft quest. The Rails! text warns that upgraded rails need special items, some of which come from machines.[4]
Track types (after Rails!)
- "Abandoned Tracks" quest asks for Abandoned Track.[4]
- "Strap Iron Tracks" quest asks for Strap Iron Track.[4]
- "Reinforced Tracks" quest asks for Reinforced Track.[4]
- "High Speed Tracks" quest asks for High Speed Track.[4]
- "Electric Tracks" quest asks for Electric Track.[4]
- "High Speed Electric Tracks" quest asks for High Speed Electric Track.[4]
Spike mauls and special tracks
"'Switch em up'" quest unlocks after the RailCraft quest. It accepts the Iron Spike Maul, Steel Spike Maul or Diamond Spike Maul. It leads to three quests that each take any track variant of that shape: "Turnout Tracks" quest, "Wye Tracks" quest and "Junction Tracks" quest. Finish all three to unlock a quest in "RailCraft", which asks for the Switch Track Lever.[4]
Track kits (after Tracks!)
Eight quests unlock after Tracks!, each asking for one or more track kits:[4]
- "Track Kits for moving entities" quest: Embarking Track Kit, Disembarking Track Kit or Dumping Track Kit.[4]
- "Track Kits for using Redstone" quest: Activator Track Kit or Detector Track Kit.[4]
- "Track Kits for stopping Carts" quest: Locking Track Kit, Gated Track Kit or Buffer Stop Track Kit.[4]
- "Track Kits for moving Carts" quest: Transition Track Kit, Booster Track Kit, Control Track Kit, Throttle Track Kit or Launcher Track Kit.[4]
- Single-kit quests: "Track Kit One Way" quest (One-Way Track Kit), "Track Kit Routing" quest (Routing Track Kit), "Track Kit Coupler" quest (Coupler Track Kit) and "Track Kit Whistle" quest (Whistle Track Kit).[4]
Machines
Several quests unlock after a parent quest called Machines. They are "Water Tank" quest (Water Tank Siding), "Blast (Steel) Furnace" quest (Blast Furnace Bricks), "Crusher" quest (Crusher), "Coke Oven" quest (Coke Oven Bricks) and a quest in "RailCraft" (Manual Rolling Machine). The Blast Furnace quest says to build it from 34 bricks, and the Coke Oven quest says 26.[4]
The rolling machine leads on to a quest in "RailCraft", which asks for the Powered Rolling Machine. The quest notes that it needs power. "Boilers" quest is the other Machines follow-up. It needs one boiler tank (low or high pressure) and one firebox (solid or fluid fueled). Boilers then unlock "Steam Oven" quest (Steam Oven) and "Steam Turbine" quest (Turbine Rotor).[4]
Carts, loaders and locomotives
The last group unlocks after a parent quest called Carts 'N' Trains!. Its direct follow-ups are:[4]
- "Carts and Tracks" quest: Track Layer Cart, Track Relayer Cart, Track Remover Cart or Track Undercutter Cart.[4]
- "New Carts" quest: Minecart with Tank or Minecart with Energy cell.[4]
- "Steam Locomotive" quest: the Steam Locomotive.[4]
- "Frames" quest: the Frame, which powers electric rails.[4]
- "Tunnel Bore, Bore Head" quest: any of the iron, bronze, steel or diamond tunnel bore heads.[4]
- "Item Loader" quest: the Item Loader.[4]
- "Item Unloader" quest: the Item Unloader.[4]
- "Fluid Loader" quest: the Fluid Loader.[4]
- "Cart Dispenser" quest: the Cart Dispenser.[4]
Each of those has a follow-up. "Tunnel Bore" quest asks for the Tunnel Bore. "Advanced Item Loader" quest asks for the Advanced Item Loader. "Advanced Item Unloader" quest asks for the Advanced Item Unloader. "Fluid Unloader" quest asks for the Fluid Unloader. "Train Dispenser" quest asks for the Train Dispenser. Finally, "Electric Locomotive" quest asks for the Electric Locomotive and unlocks after both Frames and Electric Tracks.[4]
The Chapter 2 crossover
In Chapter 2: The Cool Parts, "Iron Plates" quest wants iron plates. Its first task accepts a Forge Hammer, an Engineer's Hammer or the Manual Rolling Machine. The second task is the iron plate itself. The quest text says the Manual Rolling Machine turns 4 Iron Ingots into 4 Iron Plates.[34]
What changed in Railcraft Reborn between versions?
4 parts
All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships Railcraft Reborn 1.2.10, and the mod has been in the pack since version 1.0 or earlier. The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so everything below comes from Railcraft Reborn's own changelogs. I only have the notes for 1.2.5, 1.2.7, 1.2.8 and 1.2.10, so releases in between aren't covered.[2][35][36][37][38]
1.2.10 (the version in the pack)
- The world spike minecart now loads a 3x3 chunk area.[35]
- A fix for player list deserialization in the logbook.[35]
- A harvest check was removed. The changelog doesn't say what it affected.[35]
- The rest of the release is new translations and build updates, including a Gradle wrapper update to 9.2.[35]
1.2.8
- A new config option for the turbine power generation multiplier. The changelog doesn't give its default value, so check the config in your own instance if you want to tweak turbine output.[36]
- Signal aspect management in the signal box action code was refactored, and text rendering was fixed.[36]
- Fixes for three tracked issues (#325, #321 and #323), plus updated translations and dependencies. The changelog doesn't describe what those issues were.[36]
1.2.7
1.2.5
This release is mostly bug fixes. The changelog lists fixes for issues #269, #255 and #284, closes #280, restores original behavior in one change, and adds new translations. It doesn't describe the individual issues, so I can't tell you more about them.[38]
