What is Railcraft Reborn?
1 part
Railcraft Reborn is a port of the classic Railcraft mod to modern Minecraft, and this pack includes version 1.2.5. It turns railways into a proper industry: all the rail recipes are reworked, and you craft railbeds from ties and combine them with rails to make many different track types.[1][2][3]
Beyond track, you get carts like the Steam Locomotive, the Electric Locomotive and the Tunnel Bore, plus loaders, unloaders, dispensers and a working signalling system built from signal boxes. There are also multi-block machines: the Coke Oven, the Blast Furnace (iron ingots into steel), the Crusher, the Steam Boiler and the Steam Oven.[1][4][5][6][7][8][9]
Where it sits in the quest book
The pack's quest book gives Railcraft its own chapter, "railcraft", with 52 quests. It opens with three entry points: a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and the a quest in "?" quest. Everything else branches off the first two.[10]
- After the iron ingot quest: a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?". The firebox quest leads on to a quest in "?" and a quest in "?", and the rolling machine quest leads to a quest in "?".[10]
- After the rail quest: a quest in "?" (which opens the track types, such as a quest in "?" and a quest in "?"), a quest in "?" (which opens the track kits), a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[10]
- After the minecart quest: the loaders and unloaders, a quest in "?" (followed by a quest in "?"), a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?", which leads to a quest in "?".[10]
- a quest in "?" needs both a quest in "?" and a quest in "?" first, and a quest in "?" comes after the junction, wye and turnout track quests that follow a quest in "?".[10]
Railcraft also shows up in the "building_tips" chapter, where the a quest in "?" quest accepts Abyssal Stone or Quarried Stone and comes after the cobblestone quest. That chapter has 67 quests and the text of 34 of them isn't covered here, so check the quest book for the rest.[11]
How do you get started with Railcraft Reborn?
7 parts
Railcraft Reborn turns building a railroad into a small industry of its own. You craft railbeds from ties, then combine them with rails to get tracks of many different types. The pack also ships a Railcraft quest chapter, so you can use it as a checklist while you follow the order below.[3][10]
Step one: the Manual Rolling Machine
Your first workshop block is the Manual Rolling Machine, a machine for rolling various shapes of metal. If the grid only holds enough items for one cycle, you can click the output display to force the craft. The quest a quest in "?" asks for it, and the follow-up quest a quest in "?" asks for the Powered Rolling Machine, which you can automate by piping items in and out.[10][12]
Step two: track parts and rails
In the quest book, a quest in "?" asks for Track Parts, and a quest in "?" asks for any one rail type: wooden, standard, advanced, reinforced, high speed or electric. The track kit quests, such as a quest in "?" and a quest in "?", come after the track parts quest.[10]
Step three: your first track
Start with Abandoned Track. It requires less wood and creosote than iron track, so it suits you when you are short on creosote or time. It can also stay suspended, which helps when you cross a canyon.[13]

When you have more resources, the standard track is essentially equal to the vanilla rail and can take track kits. Strap iron track needs far less iron but has a speed limit of only 30% of iron track.[14][15]
Step four: the Coke Oven
The Coke Oven is a hollow 3x3x3 structure that turns coal into coal coke, or wood into charcoal, and produces creosote oil as a byproduct. The quest a quest in "?" asks for 26 Coke Oven Bricks. Two ovens can't touch each other, so leave at least one tile between them.[6][10]
Step five: the Spike Maul
The Iron Spike Maul lets you turn a regular track into turnouts, wyes and intersections. In the quest book, a quest in "?" leads on to the wye, junction and turnout quests, and those lead to the Switch Track Lever.[10][12]

The Crusher has its own quest, a quest in "?". The pack changed this recipe, so follow the one below and not older guides.[10][16]

A note on crowbars
The Crowbar is the tool every rail engineer carries. It removes rails, adjusts them, boosts carts and links carts with shift right-click. The quest book also has a quest for the Seasons Crowbar. It can't link carts but can break doors, and it can only be obtained in Workshops.[10][17]
How does Railcraft Reborn work?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide
Railcraft Reborn is more than tracks. Its in-game guide covers a whole industrial chain of multiblock structures, from ovens and furnaces to boilers and tanks. This section walks through how those systems work, then the signalling boxes and a few track behaviours worth knowing. The sizes and behaviours below come from the mod's own in-game guide. The pack's recipe changes are called out where they show up.[1][18]
Processing multiblocks
The Coke Oven is a 3x3x3 brick structure, hollow in the middle. It turns coal into coal coke, or wood into charcoal, and gives you creosote oil as a byproduct. It holds 64,000 units of creosote oil, and you can pull that out with buckets or glass bottles that hold 1,000 units each. Filled buckets don't stack but filled bottles do. Two ovens can't touch, so leave at least one block between them.[6]
Coke is slow to make, so the guide suggests building several ovens if you want a lot of rail.[6]
The Blast Furnace is a 3x3x4 brick structure, hollow in the middle, that converts iron ingots into steel ingots. Like the oven, two furnaces can't be adjacent.[5]
The Rock Crusher is a 3x2x2 structure for processing various materials, and it can't be built next to another Crusher either. The pack changes two of its recipes. Coal blocks crush into Coal Dust, and coal ores crush into coal, diamond, coal dust and Sulfur Dust. Crushing charcoal into Charcoal Dust is the mod's own recipe, unchanged.[7][19]

The Steam Oven is a 2x2x2 structure that cooks items when you feed it steam. It handles up to 9 items at once in 256 ticks, which is 12.8 seconds.[9]
Steam power
A Steam Boiler is built from the bottom up. First comes the Firebox. A solid-fueled one burns normal furnace fuels such as charcoal or coal coke. A liquid-fueled one burns creosote oil, bio-fuel or fuel. Boiler sizes are 1x1, 2x2 and 3x3, and above the Firebox you add a Boiler Tank.[8]
The tank size you can use depends on the Firebox. A 1x1 Firebox takes a 1 cubic meter tank, a 2x2 takes 8 or 12, and a 3x3 takes 18, 27 or 36. High Pressure tanks produce twice the steam, but Low Pressure tanks are generally more efficient. Bigger boilers use fuel more efficiently, so one large boiler beats several small ones.[8]
The Steam Turbine turns steam into electrical power. It uses the same 2x3x2 pattern as the Crusher and only works with a Turbine Rotor installed. A rotor should last several real-time days of constant use, and you can repair it by combining two rotors with the vanilla repair mechanic.[20]
The Water Tank is a 3x3x3 hollow structure made of Water Tank Siding. It passively collects water and holds 400 buckets. How fast it refills depends on the biome, the weather and whether the tank can see the sky, so the guide advises against running your railway through a desert.[21]
Tanks
Iron Tanks come in 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 and 9x9 footprints, with a height from 4 to 8 blocks. Lay down a frame of Iron Tank Wall blocks, then fill the top, bottom and sides with any mix of Wall, Gauge or Valve. To stack tanks, place Valve blocks in the centre where the tanks touch.[22]
The pack adds its own recipe for White Iron Tank Wall. Coloured gauges such as Black Iron Tank Gauge have their own recipe too.[19]

Signalling
Signal boxes are part of the Signalling module and are used to operate signals. Two tools set them up. The Signal Block Surveyor pairs two Block Signals: right-click one, then the other, and a message tells you whether the Signal Block is valid. The Signal Tuner pairs a Controller with a Receiver in the same way, and right-clicking either one clears an existing pairing.[4][23][24]
- Signal Receiver Box: pair it with a Controller, then pick in its GUI which Signal Aspects should emit a redstone current.[25]
- Signal Controller Box: placed next to a Receiver Box, it sends that Receiver's aspect on to a paired Receiver. Several Controllers can sit next to one Receiver, so one Block Signal can drive multiple Switch Motors or Distant Signals.[26]
- Signal Capacitor Box: placed next to a Receiver or Relay Box, it emits a redstone pulse of adjustable length. Rising Edge pulses when the neighbour starts emitting. Falling Edge holds the pulse until the set time after the neighbour stops, which creates a delay.[27]
- Signal Block Relay Box: pairs with up to two other Block Signals or Relays, and works as an end cap or an extender. As an extender it lets a Signal Block wrap around corners and still act as one block. It can also be set to emit redstone and act as a Controller.[28]
Two Controller Box details are easy to miss. With two Receivers next to it, a Controller sends the most restrictive aspect of the two. A Controller also can't be linked to two Receivers, and placing a Receiver next to a Controller only passes information, it doesn't link them.[26]
The Analog Signal Controller Box reads redstone strength instead of simple on or off. In its GUI you can set, for example, GREEN at strength 5, RED at 0 and OFF at 15. The pack changes both this recipe and the Block Signal recipe.[19][29]

Tools and tracks
The Charge Meter measures Railcraft Charge in machines, wires and tracks, and it records network usage over a 5-second period. Trackman's Goggles show hidden things, including the signals that link a Controller and Receiver, and they display one aura at a time.[30][31]
The Crowbar does a lot. It removes modern rails, adjusts rails (usually by reversing direction), gives carts a small boost when you right-click them, and links carts with shift right-click.[17]
Tracks are built by crafting railbeds from ties and combining them with rails. Each track type has its own speed, conduction, collision and explosion resistance.[3][32]
- Abandoned tracks can stay suspended, which helps across canyons, and carts can derail on them. Once a cart goes faster than 0.35 block per tick, every tick carries a small chance of derailing, and that chance builds up the longer it keeps that speed. If one cart in a train derails, the whole train does.[13]
- Control Track boosts carts in one direction and slows carts going the other way. Powering it reverses the direction, and power propagates for up to sixteen blocks either way.[33]
- Elevator Track can be placed vertically. Powered sections lift carts and unpowered ones lower them.[34]
- Turnout Track can't be operated directly by redstone. It needs a Switch Motor placed opposite the turnout, or a Switch Lever for a manual switch.[35]

How do you progress through Railcraft Reborn?
6 parts
The Railcraft Reborn quests in this pack have no titles, so I'll describe each one by the item it asks for. They form a branching chain: factory structures and steel first, then rails and tracks, track kits, steam power, and finally carts and logistics.[10]
Stage 1: Industry and steel
- Coke oven: a quest in "?" asks for 26 Coke Oven Bricks. That is the full brick count of the 3x3x3 hollow Coke Oven, which turns coal into coal coke and wood into charcoal, with creosote oil as a byproduct.[6][10]
- Blast furnace: a quest in "?" asks for 34 Blast Furnace Bricks. They build the 3x3x4 Blast Furnace, which converts iron ingots into steel ingots.[5][10]
- Crusher: a quest in "?" asks for the Crusher, a 3x2x2 multi-block structure for processing materials.[7][10]
- Rolling machines: a quest in "?" asks for the Manual Rolling Machine, and a quest in "?" follows with the Powered Rolling Machine.[10]

Steel matters because many later recipes rely on it, including the steel-rolled rails, the powered rolling machine and the electric locomotive.[16]
Stage 2: Rails and tracks
a quest in "?" accepts any one of the rail types: Wooden Rail, Standard Rail, Advanced Rail, Reinforced Rail, High Speed Rail or Electric Rail. a quest in "?" asks for Track Parts and unlocks from the same earlier quest. Rails are made in the rolling machine, and these are the in-pack rolling recipes for the upper tiers.[10][16]

a quest in "?" accepts an Iron Spike Maul, Steel Spike Maul or Diamond Spike Maul. It unlocks the track-shape quests: a quest in "?" for junction tracks, a quest in "?" for wye tracks and a quest in "?" for turnout tracks. a quest in "?", which asks for the Switch Track Lever, comes after all of them.[10]
Stage 3: Track kits
Every track kit quest comes after the Track Parts quest. Each one accepts any of the kits listed:[10]
- a quest in "?": Embarking Track Kit, Disembarking Track Kit or Dumping Track Kit[10]
- a quest in "?": Activator Track Kit or Detector Track Kit[10]
- a quest in "?": Locking Track Kit, Gated Track Kit or Buffer Stop Track Kit[10]
- a quest in "?": Transition Track Kit, Booster Track Kit, Control Track Kit, Throttle Track Kit or Launcher Track Kit[10]
- Single-kit quests: a quest in "?" for the One-Way Track Kit, a quest in "?" for the Routing Track Kit, a quest in "?" for the Coupler Track Kit and a quest in "?" for the Whistle Track Kit[10]
Stage 4: Steam power
a quest in "?" asks for a boiler tank (low or high pressure) plus a firebox (solid or fluid fueled). High pressure tanks produce twice the steam, while low pressure ones are generally more efficient. Two quests unlock from there: a quest in "?" for the Steam Oven, a 2x2x2 structure that cooks up to 9 items at once, and a quest in "?" for the Turbine Rotor, which the Steam Turbine needs to turn steam into electrical power.[8][9][10][20]
a quest in "?" asks for Water Tank Siding. A 3x3x3 hollow Water Tank built from it holds 400 buckets of water for refilling steam locomotives.[10][21]
Stage 5: Carts, locomotives and logistics
- Cart quests: a quest in "?" accepts any of the Track Layer Cart, Track Relayer Cart, Track Remover Cart or Track Undercutter Cart. a quest in "?" accepts the Minecart with Tank or Minecart with Energy cell.[10]
- Locomotives: a quest in "?" asks for the Steam Locomotive and a quest in "?" asks for the Frame. a quest in "?" asks for the Electric Locomotive and needs both the Frame quest and the Electric Track quest done first.[10]
- Dispensers: a quest in "?" asks for the Cart Dispenser, then a quest in "?" asks for the Train Dispenser.[10]
- Item handling: a quest in "?" asks for the Item Loader, leading to a quest in "?" for the Advanced Item Loader. a quest in "?" asks for the Item Unloader, leading to a quest in "?" for the Advanced Item Unloader.[10]
- Fluid handling: a quest in "?" asks for the Fluid Loader, then a quest in "?" asks for the Fluid Unloader.[10]
- Tunnel bore: a quest in "?" accepts an iron, bronze, steel or diamond bore head, and a quest in "?" then asks for the Tunnel Bore.[10]

a quest in "?" asks for the Seasons Crowbar and has no prerequisite. This crowbar can't link carts, but it can break doors, and it can only be obtained in Workshops. A separate building tips quest, a quest in "?", accepts either Abyssal Stone or Quarried Stone.[10][11][17]
How does Railcraft Reborn work with other mods?
2 parts
In this pack, Railcraft Reborn connects to other mods through steel. The recipes that show it were changed by the pack, so they may not match what you remember from a standalone Railcraft install.[16]
Advanced loaders and unloaders
The Advanced Item Loader and Advanced Item Unloader both need a Steel Shovel, which is not a Railcraft item. Each one is built on top of the basic Item Loader or Item Unloader. The recipes also take redstone dust and steel ingots, and they accept any item from the steel ingot tag, not just one specific ingot.[16]

The quest book follows the same order. The quest for the Advanced Item Loader (a quest in "?") comes after the Item Loader quest (a quest in "?"), and the quest for the Advanced Item Unloader (a quest in "?") comes after the Item Unloader quest (a quest in "?").[10]
Blasting Railcraft steel gear into steel
The pack changed the Railcraft blasting recipes for the steel tools and armor so that they output Steel Ingot, an ingot from another mod. The recipes cover the steel axe, boots, chestplate, helmet, hoe, leggings, pickaxe, shears and sword, plus the iron crowbar. For example, you can blast a Steel Pickaxe into a steel ingot.[16]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Railcraft Reborn?
5 parts
Most of the Railcraft quests sit in their own "railcraft" chapter. None of them has a title in the pack files, so I refer to them by quest ID. Every task is a "get this item" task. Where a task lists several items joined by "or", you only need one of them.[10]
The chapter branches from three earlier quests, and the pack data I have doesn't say what those quests are. Below I group the quests by the branch they hang off.[10]
Standalone
- a quest in "?" asks for a Seasons Crowbar. It has no prerequisite.[10]
Industry branch
The first branch is about the multiblock structures and processing machines.[10]
- Gather the structure parts: a quest in "?" wants 34 Blast Furnace Bricks, and a quest in "?" wants 26 Coke Oven Bricks. a quest in "?" asks for a Crusher, and a quest in "?" asks for a Water Tank Siding.[10]
- a quest in "?" asks for a steam boiler tank (Low Pressure Steam Boiler Tank or High Pressure Steam Boiler Tank) and a firebox (Solid Fueled Firebox or Fluid Fueled Firebox).[10]
- Two quests unlock after the boiler quest: a quest in "?" for the Steam Oven and a quest in "?" for the Turbine Rotor.[10]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Manual Rolling Machine. It leads to a quest in "?", the Powered Rolling Machine.[10]
Track branch
This branch starts with three quests: rails, track parts and spike mauls.[10]
- a quest in "?" accepts any rail type, from Wooden Rail up to Electric Rail. After it come the track-type quests: a quest in "?" (Abandoned Track), a quest in "?" (Strap Iron Track), a quest in "?" (Reinforced Track), a quest in "?" (Electric Track), a quest in "?" (High Speed Track) and a quest in "?" (High Speed Electric Track).[10]
- a quest in "?" asks for Track Parts. It opens the track kit quests: a quest in "?" (embarking, disembarking or dumping), a quest in "?" (activator or detector), a quest in "?" (locking, gated or buffer stop), a quest in "?" (One-Way Track Kit), a quest in "?" (Routing Track Kit), a quest in "?" (Coupler Track Kit), a quest in "?" (Whistle Track Kit) and a quest in "?" (transition, booster, control, throttle or launcher).[10]
- a quest in "?" asks for a spike maul: Iron Spike Maul, Steel Spike Maul or Diamond Spike Maul. It unlocks three track-layout quests: a quest in "?" (turnouts), a quest in "?" (junctions) and a quest in "?" (wyes).[10]
- Once you have done all three layout quests, a quest in "?" asks for the Switch Track Lever.[10]
Carts, loaders and locomotives
The third branch covers the rolling stock and cart-handling machines.[10]
- Cart quests: a quest in "?" (a Track Layer, Relayer, Remover or Undercutter cart), a quest in "?" (Minecart with Tank or Minecart with Energy cell) and a quest in "?" (Steam Locomotive).[10]
- Loaders and unloaders: a quest in "?" (Item Loader) leads to a quest in "?" (Advanced Item Loader). a quest in "?" (Item Unloader) leads to a quest in "?" (Advanced Item Unloader). a quest in "?" (Fluid Loader) leads to a quest in "?" (Fluid Unloader).[10]
- Dispensers: a quest in "?" asks for a Cart Dispenser, which leads to a quest in "?", the Train Dispenser.[10]
- Tunnel bore: a quest in "?" asks for a bore head (iron, bronze, steel or diamond), which leads to a quest in "?", the Tunnel Bore.[10]
- Electric locomotive: a quest in "?" asks for a Frame. a quest in "?", the Electric Locomotive, needs both that quest and the electric track quest.[10]
Building Tips chapter
One more Railcraft quest sits in the "building_tips" chapter. a quest in "?" asks for Abyssal Stone or Quarried Stone.[11]
What changed in Railcraft Reborn between versions?
1 part
All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 ships Railcraft Reborn 1.2.5. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier, so this is the version you get in this release.[2]
Railcraft Reborn 1.2.5
The mod's own changelog for 1.2.5 is a short list of commits. Here is what it says:[36]
- A change that restored original behavior.[36]
- New translations from the project's Crowdin integration, merged in through a pull request.[36]
- Fixes for issues #269, #255 and #284, and the closing of issue #280.[36]
- A version bump.[36]
Unverified The changelog only gives issue numbers and does not describe what the fixes or the restored behavior change in play, so those details are unconfirmed.
The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so there is nothing more to report on how it changed between pack releases.[2]
