What is Railcraft Reborn?

2 parts

Railcraft Reborn is a port of the classic Railcraft mod to modern Minecraft, and this pack ships version 1.2.7. It's all about turning railways into a proper industry, so if you like building train networks, this is your mod.[1][2]

Tracks are no longer just a handful of iron and sticks. You craft railbeds from ties, then combine them with rails to get many different track types. The mod also reworks all the rail recipes, so even basic rails take some real setup.[1][3]

What you get

  • Carts that do real work, like the Steam Locomotive, the Electric Locomotive and the Tunnel Bore.[1]
  • Multi-block machines: a Coke Oven that turns Coal into Coal Coke, a Blast Furnace that turns Iron Ingots into Steel Ingots, and a Crusher for processing materials.[4][5][6]
  • A steam setup with Steam Boilers, a Steam Oven that cooks items using Steam, and a Steam Turbine that turns Steam into electrical power.[7][8][9]
  • A Water Tank Siding structure that collects water passively to refill your Steam Locomotives.[10]
  • A signalling system built on signal boxes, plus the Crowbar for removing rails, adjusting them and linking carts.[1][11][12]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack gives Railcraft its own quest chapter, so you can follow it step by step. "Rails!" quest and "Tracks!" quest come first and cover rails and track parts. The quest text warns that upgraded rails may need machines to make their ingredients, so keep going into the machine quests.[13]

Machines like "Water Tank" quest, "Blast (Steel) Furnace" quest, "Crusher" quest, "Coke Oven" quest and "Boilers" quest sit behind the chapter's Machines step. "Steam Oven" quest unlocks after Boilers. For switching track modes, "'Switch em up'" quest points you to the Spike Mauls.[13]

Unverified The sources don't say whether anything else in the pack depends on Railcraft items, so treat it as an optional, self-contained side path unless you find otherwise.

How do you get started with Railcraft Reborn?

5 parts

Railcraft Reborn is all about trains, so your first goal is a working rail line. In this pack the RailCraft quest chapter sends you to rails and track kits first, and the steps below follow that path. The first quest to aim for is "Rails!" quest.[1][13]

Build a Manual Rolling Machine

Start with the Manual Rolling Machine. The quest calls it your little crafting machine for many Railcraft materials. If a recipe can make more than one item, it autocrafts while you keep looking at the machine. If you walk away mid-craft, it aborts and puts the items back in your inventory, and you have to craft the last one by hand. Quest: a quest in "RailCraft".[13]

Lay your first cheap track

Abandoned Track is the budget starter. It needs less wood and creosote than iron track, so it suits you when you are short on creosote or time. It can also stay suspended, which helps when you need to cross a canyon.[14]

The catch is derailing. Once carts go faster than 0.35 block per tick on abandoned track, they have a chance to derail, so keep your speed down. If you want to save iron with no derailment risk, Strap Iron Track is much slower, with a speed limit of only 30% that of iron track. Quests: "Abandoned Tracks" quest and "Strap Iron Tracks" quest.[13][14][15]

Set up a Coke Oven

The Coke Oven gives you Coal Coke and creosote, and iron tracks need more creosote than the budget tracks above. It is a 3x3x3 structure of 26 bricks with a hollow center. Feed it coal for Coal Coke and creosote, or logs for Charcoal and creosote. The process is slow, so you may want several ovens, and they cannot touch each other. Quest: "Coke Oven" quest.[5][13][14]

Later, the Blast Furnace turns iron into steel. It is a 3x3x4 structure of 34 bricks, with the two center blocks hollow. Quest: "Blast (Steel) Furnace" quest.[4][13]

Get a Spike Maul for junctions

The Iron Spike Maul switches normal tracks into other modes. You use it to make turnouts, wyes and junctions, which you will want as soon as your line needs an intersection. Quest: "'Switch em up'" quest.[13][16]

Add track kits

Track Parts are used to craft track kits, which you combine with rails to make special rails for stopping the train, moving it and emitting redstone. Quest: "Tracks!" quest. A good first kit is the Buffer Stop Track Kit, which caps the end of your line so carts do not roll off.[13][17]

Tip: Frames can wait. They are what powers the Electric Tracks and the Electric Locomotive, so for now concentrate on rails, a Coke Oven and a Spike Maul.[13]

How does Railcraft Reborn work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Railcraft Reborn is more than tracks. Its in-game guide covers a whole industrial chain of multiblock structures, from ovens and furnaces to boilers and tanks. This section walks through how those systems work, then the signalling boxes and a few track behaviours worth knowing. The sizes and behaviours below come from the mod's own in-game guide. The pack's recipe changes are called out where they show up.[1][18]

Processing multiblocks

The Coke Oven is a 3x3x3 brick structure, hollow in the middle. It turns coal into coal coke, or wood into charcoal, and gives you creosote oil as a byproduct. It holds 64,000 units of creosote oil, and you can pull that out with buckets or glass bottles that hold 1,000 units each. Filled buckets don't stack but filled bottles do. Two ovens can't touch, so leave at least one block between them.[5]

Coke is slow to make, so the guide suggests building several ovens if you want a lot of rail.[5]

The Blast Furnace is a 3x3x4 brick structure, hollow in the middle, that converts iron ingots into steel ingots. Like the oven, two furnaces can't be adjacent.[4]

The Rock Crusher is a 3x2x2 structure for processing various materials, and it can't be built next to another Crusher either. The pack changes two of its recipes. Coal blocks crush into Coal Dust, and coal ores crush into coal, diamond, coal dust and Sulfur Dust. Crushing charcoal into Charcoal Dust is the mod's own recipe, unchanged.[6][19]

The Steam Oven is a 2x2x2 structure that cooks items when you feed it steam. It handles up to 9 items at once in 256 ticks, which is 12.8 seconds.[8]

Steam power

A Steam Boiler is built from the bottom up. First comes the Firebox. A solid-fueled one burns normal furnace fuels such as charcoal or coal coke. A liquid-fueled one burns creosote oil, bio-fuel or fuel. Boiler sizes are 1x1, 2x2 and 3x3, and above the Firebox you add a Boiler Tank.[7]

The tank size you can use depends on the Firebox. A 1x1 Firebox takes a 1 cubic meter tank, a 2x2 takes 8 or 12, and a 3x3 takes 18, 27 or 36. High Pressure tanks produce twice the steam, but Low Pressure tanks are generally more efficient. Bigger boilers use fuel more efficiently, so one large boiler beats several small ones.[7]

Watch out: Feed water to the Firebox, not the tanks, and keep the supply constant. Adding water to a hot, dry boiler risks a massive explosion. A cold boiler can burn up to 8x more fuel than at max heat, so the guide recommends leaving it running instead of shutting it down.[7]

The Steam Turbine turns steam into electrical power. It uses the same 2x3x2 pattern as the Crusher and only works with a Turbine Rotor installed. A rotor should last several real-time days of constant use, and you can repair it by combining two rotors with the vanilla repair mechanic.[9]

The Water Tank is a 3x3x3 hollow structure made of Water Tank Siding. It passively collects water and holds 400 buckets. How fast it refills depends on the biome, the weather and whether the tank can see the sky, so the guide advises against running your railway through a desert.[10]

Tanks

Iron Tanks come in 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 and 9x9 footprints, with a height from 4 to 8 blocks. Lay down a frame of Iron Tank Wall blocks, then fill the top, bottom and sides with any mix of Wall, Gauge or Valve. To stack tanks, place Valve blocks in the centre where the tanks touch.[20]

The pack adds its own recipe for White Iron Tank Wall. Coloured gauges such as Black Iron Tank Gauge have their own recipe too.[19]

Signalling

Signal boxes are part of the Signalling module and are used to operate signals. Two tools set them up. The Signal Block Surveyor pairs two Block Signals: right-click one, then the other, and a message tells you whether the Signal Block is valid. The Signal Tuner pairs a Controller with a Receiver in the same way, and right-clicking either one clears an existing pairing.[11][21][22]

  • Signal Receiver Box: pair it with a Controller, then pick in its GUI which Signal Aspects should emit a redstone current.[23]
  • Signal Controller Box: placed next to a Receiver Box, it sends that Receiver's aspect on to a paired Receiver. Several Controllers can sit next to one Receiver, so one Block Signal can drive multiple Switch Motors or Distant Signals.[24]
  • Signal Capacitor Box: placed next to a Receiver or Relay Box, it emits a redstone pulse of adjustable length. Rising Edge pulses when the neighbour starts emitting. Falling Edge holds the pulse until the set time after the neighbour stops, which creates a delay.[25]
  • Signal Block Relay Box: pairs with up to two other Block Signals or Relays, and works as an end cap or an extender. As an extender it lets a Signal Block wrap around corners and still act as one block. It can also be set to emit redstone and act as a Controller.[26]

Two Controller Box details are easy to miss. With two Receivers next to it, a Controller sends the most restrictive aspect of the two. A Controller also can't be linked to two Receivers, and placing a Receiver next to a Controller only passes information, it doesn't link them.[24]

The Analog Signal Controller Box reads redstone strength instead of simple on or off. In its GUI you can set, for example, GREEN at strength 5, RED at 0 and OFF at 15. The pack changes both this recipe and the Block Signal recipe.[19][27]

Tools and tracks

The Charge Meter measures Railcraft Charge in machines, wires and tracks, and it records network usage over a 5-second period. Trackman's Goggles show hidden things, including the signals that link a Controller and Receiver, and they display one aura at a time.[28][29]

The Crowbar does a lot. It removes modern rails, adjusts rails (usually by reversing direction), gives carts a small boost when you right-click them, and links carts with shift right-click.[12]

Tracks are built by crafting railbeds from ties and combining them with rails. Each track type has its own speed, conduction, collision and explosion resistance.[3][30]

  • Abandoned tracks can stay suspended, which helps across canyons, and carts can derail on them. Once a cart goes faster than 0.35 block per tick, every tick carries a small chance of derailing, and that chance builds up the longer it keeps that speed. If one cart in a train derails, the whole train does.[14]
  • Control Track boosts carts in one direction and slows carts going the other way. Powering it reverses the direction, and power propagates for up to sixteen blocks either way.[31]
  • Elevator Track can be placed vertically. Powered sections lift carts and unpowered ones lower them.[32]
  • Turnout Track can't be operated directly by redstone. It needs a Switch Motor placed opposite the turnout, or a Switch Lever for a manual switch.[33]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: railcraft:activator_track_kit

Track kits are applied to flex tracks.

Unverified The in-game guide says High Speed Track lets carts travel 2.5 times faster than normal and that this speed is configurable, but the sources here show no config file for this mod in the pack, so the pack's actual value is unconfirmed.

How do you progress through Railcraft Reborn?

4 parts

Railcraft progression in this pack follows the RailCraft quest chapter. The chapter splits into rails and tracks, machines, and carts and trains, and you can work on all three at the same time. Below, each stage is shown with the in-pack recipes.[13]

Stage 1: machines and materials

Most of the machine quests sit behind the Machines quests. Start with the Manual Rolling Machine. It is your hand-fed crafting machine for Railcraft materials, and the quest chain leads on to the Powered Rolling Machine, which crafts automatically but needs power.[13]

Tip: The Manual Rolling Machine autocrafts only while you keep it open. If you walk away mid-craft it aborts and hands the items back, and you have to craft the last recipe yourself.[13]

For plates, the Iron Plates quest in Chapter 2 gives you a few options. The Manual Rolling Machine can turn 4 Iron Ingots into 4 Iron Plates, but hammers from other mods work as well.[36]

Steel comes from the Blast Furnace, a 3x3x4 multiblock built from 34 Blast Furnace Bricks. Feed it iron in any form to get Steel and Granulated Sand. Coal Coke comes from the Coke Oven, a 3x3x3 multiblock built from 26 Coke Oven Bricks. Both are hollow in the middle, and the Coke Oven also produces Creosote.[4][5][13]

Stage 2: rails and tracks

The "Rails!" quest quest asks for any of the wooden, standard, advanced, reinforced, high speed or electric rails. The upgraded rails are made with a rolling machine. These are the pack's rolling recipes for the main rail types:[13][35]

Each rail type leads to its own track quest. Here is how they compare:[13]

  • Abandoned Track: the cheap option. It can bridge a few blocks without support, but your cart can be thrown off the rails.[13]
  • Strap Iron Track: much slower than the other tracks, but there is no risk of derailment.[13]
  • Reinforced Track: slightly faster than normal rails, and it does not blow up.[13]
  • High Speed Track: faster again. It needs Track Kits to build up speed, and you have to be careful on corners.[13]
  • Electric Track: used by Electric Locomotives. It is powered by Frames and hurts you if you touch it.[13]
  • High Speed Electric Track: the electric track but faster. It needs the same speed boosts as high speed track, plus Frames for power, and you must watch corners and avoid touching it.[13]

Stage 3: track kits and special tracks

The "Tracks!" quest quest starts with Track Parts, which you craft with rails to make special rails through Track Kits. The kit quests cover several jobs:[13]

Intersections come from the "'Switch em up'" quest quest (Iron Spike Maul, Steel Spike Maul or Diamond Spike Maul). Use a maul on a normal track to switch its mode. That unlocks the Turnout, Wye and Junction quests, and those lead to the Switch Track Lever quest.[13]

Watch out: Junction tracks let two lines cross, but Electric Locomotives that collide on one will explode.[13]

Stage 4: carts, steam and electric

The Carts 'N' Trains! quests unlock the loaders and the new carts. The Cart Dispenser needs a redstone signal and leads on to the Train Dispenser. The Item Loader and Item Unloader sit above the track and lead to the Advanced versions. The pack changed the recipes for the Advanced Item Loader, Advanced Item Unloader and Minecart with Energy cell, so check the in-pack versions.[13][35]

The Steam Locomotive is the basic train. It needs water and furnace fuel, so build a Water Tank from Water Tank Siding as a 3x3x3 hollow structure. It collects water depending on biome, weather and whether it can see the sky, and it holds 400 buckets.[10][13]

Steam itself comes from Boilers: a Firebox with a boiler tank on top. A 1x1 Firebox takes a 1x1 boiler, a 2x2 Firebox takes a 2x2x3 boiler, and a 3x3 Firebox takes a 3x3x4 boiler. Once you have steam, the Steam Oven (2x2x2) cooks items with it, and the Steam Turbine makes power from it using a Turbine Rotor.[8][9][13]

Watch out: Keep a constant, steady water supply going into the Firebox, not the tanks. Adding water to a hot, dry boiler risks a massive explosion.[7]

The electric line goes through Frames, which carry power to every connected Frame. Combine them with Electric Tracks and you can build the Electric Locomotive. It needs no fuel and runs only on Electric Tracks.[13]

The last step is the Tunnel Bore. It needs a Bore Head (iron, bronze, steel or diamond), fuel such as Coal, and Rails. Once it has all three, you can let it go and it places the rails for you.[13]

How does Railcraft Reborn work with other mods?

4 parts

Railcraft Reborn doesn't live on its own in this pack. A few of its recipes and quests pull in items from other mods, and the pack has rewired some of the Railcraft recipes to do it. Here's what I can confirm from the pack's recipes and quests.[35][36]

Creative Locomotive

The Creative Locomotive has a recipe added by the pack. It combines Railcraft's Charge Motor with All the Mods items like Unobtainium Gear and ATM Star Shard, plus vanilla pieces such as Netherite Ingot.[35]

Steel from the Blast Furnace

The pack changed the Railcraft Blast Furnace recipes for the Iron Crowbar and the Railcraft steel tools and armor: axe, boots, chestplate, helmet, hoe, leggings, pickaxe, shears and sword. Each of those recipes now outputs an Steel Ingot from All The Ores. That ties Railcraft's steel into the same steel the rest of the pack uses.[35]

The Blast Furnace itself is a multiblock built from 34 Blast Furnace Bricks, as the Blast (Steel) Furnace quest explains.[4][13]

Quests that accept Railcraft or other mods

The quest "Iron Plates" quest accepts a hammer from another mod or Railcraft's own Manual Rolling Machine for its first task. The options are Forge Hammer, Engineer's Hammer or the rolling machine. If you're already into Railcraft, the rolling machine is enough to cover that first task.[36]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Railcraft Reborn?

6 parts

Almost all of the Railcraft quests live in their own chapter called RailCraft. One more quest that touches the mod sits in Chapter 2: The Cool Parts. Several quests in the RailCraft chapter hang off prerequisites named Machines and Carts 'N' Trains!, which are not part of the quest text I have here, so I can only tell you their names.[13][36]

Rails and tracks

The rail branch starts with "Rails!" quest, which accepts any one of the pack's rail types, from the Wooden Rail up to the Electric Rail. The quest warns that upgraded rails need special items, some of which come from machines. In parallel, "Tracks!" quest asks for Track Parts, which are used to make track kits.[13]

Once you have Rails!, these quests each ask for one specific track type:[13]

Spike mauls and special tracks

"'Switch em up'" quest asks for an Iron Spike Maul, Steel Spike Maul or Diamond Spike Maul. Use it on normal tracks to switch their modes. It unlocks three quests, each of which accepts any matching track variant:[13]

  1. "Turnout Tracks" quest: the first mode from the maul, which splits a track forward and to one side.[13]
  2. "Wye Tracks" quest: the second mode, which merges two tracks into one.[13]
  3. "Junction Tracks" quest: the last mode, a plain crossing where tracks intersect.[13]
  4. a quest in "RailCraft": the Switch Track Lever, which unlocks after all three of the above.[13]

Track kits

Every track kit quest comes after Tracks!. Most accept any one item from a group:[13]

Machines

The machine quests come after Machines. a quest in "RailCraft" asks for the Manual Rolling Machine, and a quest in "RailCraft" follows it with the Powered Rolling Machine, which needs power but crafts automatically.[13]

Boilers unlocks two more quests: "Steam Oven" quest for the Steam Oven, and "Steam Turbine" quest for the Turbine Rotor, which the quest ties to the Steam Turbine.[13]

Carts and trains

These quests come after Carts 'N' Trains!, unless noted:[13]

Extras

a quest in "RailCraft" asks for the Seasons Crowbar and lists no prerequisite. Its text says the crowbar changes how a locomotive looks, with default, none, Halloween and Christmas modes.[13]

Over in Chapter 2, "Iron Plates" quest asks for an iron plate. For the first task you can use a Forge Hammer, an Engineer's Hammer or the Manual Rolling Machine. The quest says the rolling machine turns 4 iron ingots into 4 iron plates.[36]

What changed in Railcraft Reborn between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.2.1 ships Railcraft Reborn 1.2.7. The mod has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier, so you've had it from the start.[2]

1.2.7

  • Added support for EMI, which fixes issue #318 on the mod's tracker.[37]
  • New translations came in through Crowdin.[37]
  • The mod is no longer marked as beta.[37]
  • Small housekeeping: a leftover package-info.java file was deleted and the version number was bumped.[37]

1.2.5

  • The changelog lists a commit called "Restored original behavior", but it doesn't say which behavior.[38]
  • Fixes for issues #269, #255 and #284, and the closing of #280. The changelog only gives the issue numbers, so I can't tell you what each one covered.[38]
  • Another batch of Crowdin translations, plus a version bump.[38]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Railcraft Reborn were available, and the mod changelogs for versions between 1.2.5 and 1.2.7 weren't provided, so this history is not complete.
