What is Functional Storage?

1 part

This pack includes Functional Storage 1.21.1-1.5.8. It's a storage mod built around drawers that hold stacks of the same item. The quest book says that's handy for things like Cobblestone and Dirt.[1][2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The mod's intro quest, "Functional Storage" quest, is in the "Basic Storage" chapter. That's chapter 7 of 54 in the book, in the group "The Basics". The chapter's welcome quest describes it as the basic ways to store items without needing power. Next to the Functional Storage quest you'll find vanilla chests, Sophisticated Storage, Sophisticated Backpacks and Integrated Terminals. The book calls Integrated Terminals the best storage solution before you set up AE2. The chapter has 93 quests in total.[2]

The intro quest's task is just a chest, and the rest of the mod's quests branch off from it:[2]

Tip: The quest book says the Storage Controller can reach up to 40 blocks on all sides, a cube of 80x80x80, once you add storage upgrades to its upgrade slots. That makes it a good hub once you have a few drawers.[2]

Unverified The quest text for 53 of the 93 quests in the Basic Storage chapter is not shown in the sources here, so it is in the quest book. The quests shown here do not say whether Functional Storage is part of the ATM Star path, so check the quest book for that.

How do you get started with Functional Storage?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Functional Storage is all about drawers: blocks that each hold a big stack of one item type. This pack changed the mod's recipes, and the quest book's Basic Storage chapter walks you through it. Here is the order I'd tackle things in.[3][4]

Step one: make a drawer

Everything starts with a basic drawer. They come in wood variants, like the Acacia Drawer (1x1) and Birch Drawer (1x1), and in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 layouts, for example Acacia Drawer (1x2) and Acacia Drawer (2x2). The pack changed these recipes, so use the one below.[4]

The other wood types follow the same pattern with their own planks, and the pack changed those recipes too.

Keep a few spare drawers on hand. The Copper Upgrade, Configuration Tool, Linking Tool and Storage Controller recipes all use a drawer as an ingredient.[4]

Step two: storage upgrades

Your first upgrade is the Copper Upgrade, which the quest book calls an x8 Storage Upgrade. The tiers then chain: Gold Upgrade is x16, Diamond Upgrade is x24 and Netherite Upgrade is x32.[3]

Each tier is crafted from the one before it, so you can't skip ahead. The Netherite step is done at a smithing table instead of a crafting grid.[4]

Step three: lock your drawers

Craft the Configuration Tool early. It locks a drawer so it remembers its item, which matters once you push and pull items automatically. A locked drawer won't replace the item it was locked to.[3]

Once you have several drawers, make a Storage Controller and a Linking Tool. In the quest book, the Linking Tool quest a quest in "Basic Storage" comes first, and the controller quest a quest in "Basic Storage" follows it. The controller acts as a hub for your drawers.[3]

  1. Right-click the controller with the Linking Tool to start configuring.[3]
  2. Right-click each drawer you want to add to the network.[3]
  3. Hold the tool to see which drawers are connected to the controller.[3]

Double right-clicking the controller pulls in every item from your inventory that has a slot in the network. Sneak right-click it with an empty hand to open the upgrades tab. Adding normal storage upgrades there extends the controller's range, up to 40 blocks on every side, or an 80x80x80 cube.[3]

Tip: The Controller Access Point acts as a Storage Controller when linked to one, so it works as an entry point for the network. Items can be pushed into it or pulled out of it.[3]

Nice extras for later

Watch out: The Void Upgrade voids any extra items that arrive once a drawer is full. That stops setups from backing up, but you will lose those items.[3]

How does Functional Storage work?

6 parts

Functional Storage is built around drawers, and everything else in the mod plugs into them. This section covers how the drawers, the controller, the linking tool and the upgrades fit together, as far as the pack's data explains them.[5][6][7][8]

Drawer types

Standard drawers come in 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 layouts. That covers the wood types (oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, crimson, warped, mangrove and cherry), plus the framed and fluid drawers. For example, Acacia Drawer (1x1), Acacia Drawer (1x2) and Acacia Drawer (2x2) are the Acacia sizes.[5][6][7][8]

The mod's item and fluid denylist tags for drawer storage ship empty, so the mod's own data does not list any item or fluid as blocked.[10][11]

Recipes in this pack

Every Functional Storage recipe shown in the pack's recipe list is marked as changed by the pack, so don't rely on recipes you remember from the mod's defaults. The blocks below show the exact in-pack recipes for a basic fluid drawer and the compacting drawer.[12]

Using fluid drawers

Fluid drawers have on-screen hints for emptying a container into the drawer and for filling a container from the drawer. The mod's GUI text also tells you to right click while crouching to open the GUI.[5]

Armory Cabinet

The Armory Cabinet only accepts gear. Its insertable tag covers swords, axes, hoes, pickaxes, shovels, head, chest, leg and foot armor, and anything enchantable as a bow, crossbow, trident or mace. It also takes elytra, shields, fishing rods, flint and steel, shears, brushes and enchanted books. Its GUI has a search box, which is handy once it fills up.[5][13]

Controller, access points and linking

The Storage Controller ties drawers together, and the framed version is Framed Storage Controller. The Controller Access Point (Controller Access Point) is the extra block that goes with it, and it also has a framed version. The Linking Tool has a single mode that links a drawer to a controller, and a multiple mode that links multiple drawers between 2 points.[5][14][15][16][17]

Upgrades

The mod's item list includes these upgrades: copper, gold, diamond and netherite, Max Storage, Collector, Puller, Pusher, Redstone, Void, Dripping, Obsidian Generator and Water Generator, plus Creative Vending. The Iron Downgrade is also in the list, and its tooltip says it downgrades the slots to a max of 64 items.[5]

Some upgrades are set up inside the drawer's GUI. Their tooltips say to right click in a GUI to change the direction or the slot.[5]

Storage-style upgrades describe themselves as increasing the base, decreasing it, or setting it to a fixed value. Generator-style upgrades say how many mb of a fluid they generate, but the sources here don't give the amounts.[5]

Crafting-wise, the Diamond Upgrade is made from the Gold Upgrade, so you climb the tiers in order. The Copper Upgrade, Collector Upgrade and Dripping Upgrade each have their own in-pack recipe.[12]

Unverified Numeric details such as storage capacities per drawer and upgrade tier, or how fast the Puller, Pusher and Collector upgrades move items, would live in the mod's config. The sources here include no config files for this mod, so those values are not confirmed.

How do you progress through Functional Storage?

5 parts

Functional Storage lives in the "Basic Storage" chapter of the quest book, in the "The Basics" group (chapter 7 of 54, 93 quests). It shares that chapter with the Sophisticated Storage and Sophisticated Backpacks lines, so the drawer quests are one branch among several. There is also a short intro quest in the "Tips and Tricks" chapter, which describes drawers as holding several stacks of an item and says they can be upgraded to hold even more.[2][18]

Where it starts

The branch opens with the quest "Functional Storage" quest, which has you hand in a chest. Right after it comes a quest in "Basic Storage", which explains that drawers come in 1x1, 2x1 and 2x2 layouts and hold stacks of 1, 2 or 4 items depending on the type. The 1x1, 1x2 and 2x2 items are, for example, Oak Drawer (1x1), Oak Drawer (1x2) and Oak Drawer (2x2).[2][12]

The upgrade quests in this branch hang off that "Stacks on Stacks" quest, and so does the Linking Tool quest that opens the next stage. The pack has changed the crafting recipes for the drawers, so go by the recipe shown here and not by what you remember from the mod's defaults.[2][12]

The storage tiers

The main progression is the chain of storage upgrades, and the quest book lays it out in a straight line. Each quest is unlocked by the one before it.[2]

  1. "Copper Upgrade" quest for the Copper Upgrade, titled x8 Storage Upgrade.[2]
  2. "Gold Upgrade" quest for the Gold Upgrade, titled x16 Storage Upgrade.[2]
  3. "Diamond Upgrade" quest for the Diamond Upgrade, titled x24 Storage Upgrade.[2]
  4. "Netherite Upgrade" quest for the Netherite Upgrade, titled x32 Storage Upgrade.[2]

The recipes follow the same ladder, and the pack has changed all four. The Gold, Diamond and Netherite upgrades each build on the tier before them, and the Netherite step is a smithing recipe rather than a crafting table one.[12]

Beyond Netherite

The pack adds its own top tier with a custom recipe, the Max Storage Upgrade. It builds on the Netherite Upgrade, and the recipe is added by the pack, not part of the base mod.[12]

This recipe is added by the pack.

Side branches

Several other quests unlock straight from "Stacks on Stacks", and you can do them in any order alongside the tiers:[2]

After the Linking Tool

The Linking Tool quest unlocks the networking and specialty drawers:[2]

Tip: If you set up pushing and pulling with drawers, lock them with the Configuration Tool first. A locked drawer will not replace the item it was locked to.[2]

How does Functional Storage work with other mods?

2 parts

Functional Storage has few direct crossovers with other mods in this pack. The clearest one is a recipe the pack added itself with KubeJS, and it uses an item from the pack's own content.[12]

Max Storage Upgrade

The Max Storage Upgrade is crafted with a shaped recipe added by the pack. It combines the Netherite Upgrade with an ATM Star Shard, which does not come from Functional Storage. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[12]

Where it sits in the quest book

Functional Storage is covered in the "Basic Storage" chapter, in the group "The Basics" (chapter 7 of 54 in the book). The chapter has 93 quests, and the text of 67 of them is not shown here, so check the quest book for the rest.[2]

The same chapter also covers other storage options: "Vanilla Storage" quest (chests, including the Ars Nouveau archwood chest), "Trash Cans" quest, "Integrated Terminals" quest, "Sophisticated Storage" quest and "Sophisticated Backpacks" quest. The Integrated Terminals quest calls that mod the best storage solution before setting up AE2.[2]

The Functional Storage upgrade quests run in a chain: "Copper Upgrade" quest, then "Gold Upgrade" quest, "Diamond Upgrade" quest and "Netherite Upgrade" quest. That last step, the Netherite Upgrade, is also the item the Max Storage Upgrade recipe above builds on.[2][12]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Functional Storage?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

Everything for this mod lives in a single chapter, Basic Storage. Each quest asks you to get hold of one item (or any one of a small group of related items), and the quest text explains what it does. Most of them unlock after one earlier quest in the chapter, so the chapter fans out in a few branches rather than running as one long line.[3]

Linking Tool branch

The first quest in this branch is a quest in "Basic Storage", which asks for the Linking Tool. It links Drawers to a Controller and links Ender Drawers together. Seven more quests unlock after it:[3]

After the Controller quest, a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Controller Access Point. It acts as an extra entry point to your Drawers when linked to the Controller.[3]

Utility upgrades

Six upgrade quests unlock from the same earlier quest in the chapter, so you can do them in any order:[3]

Storage upgrade chain

The storage upgrades form a strict chain. "Copper Upgrade" quest (the Copper Upgrade, an x8 Storage Upgrade) comes first, then "Gold Upgrade" quest (the Gold Upgrade, x16), then "Diamond Upgrade" quest (the Diamond Upgrade, x24), and finally "Netherite Upgrade" quest (the Netherite Upgrade, x32).[3]
