What is Botany Pots?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Botany Pots adds the Botany Pot, a block that grows all kinds of crops. You can use it as decoration, or to make farming certain crops much easier. The mod was inspired by Davenonymous's Bonsai Trees mod.[1]

The pack includes Botany Pots 21.1.44 for NeoForge 1.21.1. It was first included in an earlier version of the pack, 4.6 or before.[2]

What it gives you

  • Harvesting a crop in a pot automatically replants the seed.[1]
  • A Hopper upgrade lets the pot harvest itself and push items into a chest or another block with an inventory.[1]
  • Pots come in seventeen different colors.[1]
  • Crops, soils and fertilizers are defined through datapacks, and CraftTweaker can remove, modify or add them.[1]

How it works in practice

Craft a pot, then pick the crop you want and a soil that suits it. Wheat grows in dirt, for example, and nether wart grows in soul sand. Right click the pot with the soil first, then with the seed, and growth starts.[1]

Growth takes a while, but bone meal and other fertilizers speed it up. When the crop is ready, right click it to harvest and replant in one go. To take items out of the pot, sneak and right click with an empty hand, or just break the block.[1]

Who it is for

It suits anyone who wants low-effort, compact farms, or a nicer-looking way to grow crops. The simple right-click workflow makes it easy to start, and the Hopper upgrade covers automation.[1]

Unverified The sources do not show where Botany Pots fits in this pack's progression. They do not show it on the ATM Star path, in any quests, or in any guidebook. The project page lists crop support for several other mods, but the sources do not confirm which of those are in this pack or whether the pack changes any recipes or values.

How do you get started with Botany Pots?

3 parts

Botany Pots lets you grow crops in a block, and harvesting replants the seed for you automatically. Getting started is simple: make a pot, give it a soil and a seed, and let it grow.[1]

Step 1: Craft a Botany Pot

Pots come in many colors and materials, and the pack has a separate crafting recipe for each one. The Brick Botany Pot is a good one to start with.[1][3]

The mod offers pots in seventeen different colors, so you can pick a look that suits your base. Pots work as decoration too.[1]

Step 2: Plant your first crop

Think about what you want to grow, because crops need the right soil. The mod's own examples are wheat in dirt and nether wart in soul sand. If a crop doesn't suit a soil, the pot's tooltip tells you it can't be planted there.[1][4]

  1. Place the pot and right click it with your soil block.[1]
  2. Right click it again with your seed to start growth.[1]
  3. Be patient, or speed things up by right clicking with bone meal or another fertilizer.[1]
  4. When the crop is fully grown, right click it to harvest. The pot plants another one automatically.[1]
Tip: To take items back out of a pot, sneak and right click it with an empty hand. Breaking the block works too.[1]

Step 3: Automate with a Hopper Botany Pot

Once you have the basics down, the hopper upgrade is the next thing to make. A Hopper Botany Pot harvests itself and puts the items into a chest or another block with an inventory, so you don't have to harvest by hand.[1]

You can upgrade an existing pot, which is the first recipe below, or use the all-in-one "quick" recipe, which makes the hopper pot without crafting the plain pot first.[3]

Brick Hopper Botany Pot is the hopper version of Brick Botany Pot. The other pot materials and colors shown in the recipe list have the same pair of recipes.[3]

Each pot material also has a waxed variant with its own crafting recipe, for example Brick Waxed Botany Pot.[3]

How does Botany Pots work?

6 parts

The sources describe Botany Pots as one block, the Botany Pot, that grows crops, plus an upgrade that automates harvesting. Here's how it works.[1]

Planting and growing

  1. Craft a Botany Pot, then decide which crop you want and what soil it needs. Different crops need different soils. Wheat grows in dirt, for example, and nether wart grows in soul sand.[1]
  2. Right click the pot with your soil first, then right click with your seed. That starts the growth process.[1]
  3. Crops can take a while to grow. Right clicking with bone meal or another fertilizer speeds them up.[1]
  4. When the crop is done, right click it to harvest. The seed is replanted automatically.[1]
Tip: If a seed won't go in, check the soil. The mod has a tooltip that reads "Can not be planted in" followed by a name.[4]

Getting things back out

To take items out of a pot, sneak and right click the block with an empty hand. Breaking the block works too.[1]

Automation with the Hopper Botany Pot

The hopper upgrade is the automation feature the sources describe. A Hopper Botany Pot harvests itself and puts the items into a chest or any other block with an inventory. That means you can set up a hands-free farm without right clicking every crop.[1]

In this pack you can upgrade an existing pot or use the single-step recipe to get a hopper pot. Both are shown below with the black terracotta pot as the example.[3]

Pot variants

The mod offers seventeen colors. In this pack the recipe dump shows terracotta, glazed terracotta and concrete versions, for example Black Botany Pot, Black Glazed Botany Pot and Black Concrete Botany Pot. The black pots also have hopper and waxed versions, for example Black Waxed Botany Pot, and the recipe is shown below.[1][3]

Idle Hands enchantment

The mod includes an enchantment called Idle Hands. An item with it becomes effectively useless when a player uses it, but it takes no durability damage when used in a Botany Pot.[4]

Crops, soils and fertilizers

Crops, soils and fertilizers are defined through datapacks, and CraftTweaker can add, change or remove them. That means the exact list of crops and soils depends on what a pack has set up.[1]

How do you progress through Botany Pots?

4 parts

In this pack, Botany Pots progression comes down to which pot you build and which variant you turn it into. The pots in the recipe list come in a basic form, a hopper form and a waxed form, and each form has its own in-pack recipe.[3]

Pot materials

The pots come in several material families: plain terracotta, glazed terracotta, concrete, bricks, deepslate bricks and end stone bricks. The recipes visible here cover black, blue, brown and cyan in the terracotta, glazed and concrete families, plus gray concrete, brick, deepslate brick and end stone brick. The rest of the recipe list was cut off, so not every colour is confirmed.[3]

The basic pot

Every family has a basic pot. Here is the Black Botany Pot as an example. The other families follow the same pattern with their own matching block.[3]

The hopper pot

The hopper version, such as the Black Hopper Botany Pot, can be made by upgrading a basic pot you already have. There is also a quick recipe that skips the basic pot and builds the hopper pot in one go.[3]

The waxed pot

The waxed version, such as the Black Waxed Botany Pot, is made from the basic pot of the same family.[3]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: botanypots:botanypots/crafting/black_terracotta_waxed_botany_pot

The waxed pot is a shapeless recipe that starts from the basic pot.

Tip: Pick the material family you like before you start. The hopper and waxed recipes in each family are built from that family's basic pot, so an upgrade stays in the same family.[3]

What changed in Botany Pots between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 ships Botany Pots 21.1.44, and the mod has been in the pack since version 1.1.1 or earlier. The notes below come from the mod's own changelogs for the releases I have, newest first.[5]

Changes by release

  • 21.1.44 (the version in this pack): coral drops no longer have tool requirements, and their loot tables are simplified. The loot tables for tall and short grass, and tall and short ferns, now drop items without silk touch.[5][6]
  • 21.1.41: build dependencies were updated. Nothing here changes how you play.[7]
  • 21.1.40: the config is no longer loaded a second time during recipe loading.[8]
  • 21.1.39: the config file is now initialized from the main thread. This should fix a FileAlreadyExistsException on startup.[9]
  • 21.1.34: the mod left beta and started publishing public releases, along with a cleanup of the project files.[10]
Tip: If you ever see a FileAlreadyExistsException about the config at startup on an older Botany Pots build, that is what 21.1.39 set out to fix. The pack's 21.1.44 is newer than that release.[5][9]

I only have changelogs for the releases listed above, so any other versions between 21.1.34 and 21.1.44 are not covered here. I also have no pack changelog entries that mention this mod.[6][7][8][9][10]
