What is Sawmill?

3 parts

Sawmill is a small, focused mod: it adds one crafting station, the Sawmill, that lets you craft wooden items. Its recipes work with any mod, so wood-derived blocks from other mods in the pack can be crafted there too.[1]

The pack ships Sawmill 1.21-1.7.7 for NeoForge, and it has been part of the pack since 0.3.0-beta or earlier.[2]

What it adds

  • A Sawmill workstation with its own sawing sounds, used to craft wood-derived blocks and items.[1]
  • A Carpenter villager that works at the Sawmill and offers some useful trades.[1]
  • 5 unique Carpenter houses that can spawn in villages.[1]
  • No extra wooden block spam. The Sawmill is the only block it adds.[1]

Who it is for

If you build a lot with wood, or you're tired of hunting for the right way to craft a stairs, slab or fence variant from some mod, this is for you. You craft those pieces at one station instead of tracking down separate recipes.[1]

Pack makers can also add extra Sawmill recipes with KubeJS or datapacks, and the Carpenter's trades are data driven through Moonlight's villager trade system.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

Unverified The sources I was given don't show Sawmill's place in the pack's progression. I can't confirm any ATM Star path involvement, quests, or pack-specific changes to its recipes or config.

How do you get started with Sawmill?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mons 1.3.0 guide

Good news: this mod keeps things simple. It adds one crafting station, the Sawmill, which lets you craft wooden items. The pack's recipe dump lists a single recipe that makes a Sawmill item, the Saw, so your first step is making that.[1][3]

First, craft the Saw

The pack changed this recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. The block below shows the exact in-pack version.[3]

This is the pack's changed version of the recipe, not the mod default.

Then put it to work

Once you have a Sawmill, you can use it to craft wood items. The mod's project page says its recipes are compatible with any mod and can craft any wood-derived block, so wooden blocks from other mods should be craftable there too. It also adds no extra wooden block spam, so the Sawmill is the only new thing to learn.[1]

Finally, look for a Carpenter

  • Carpenter villagers can work at a Sawmill and offer some useful trades.[1]
  • The mod adds 5 unique Carpenter houses that can spawn in villages, so keep an eye out when you explore.[1]
  • The Sawmill has its own sawing sounds, so you will hear when it is working.[1]
Tip: The mod supports KubeJS and datapacks for adding extra recipes, and its villager trades are data driven through the Moonlight villager trade system.[1]

How does Sawmill work?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.4 guide

Sawmill keeps things refreshingly simple: it adds one new crafting station, the Saw, and that single block is your go-to spot for crafting wooden items. There's no pile of extra machines or tiers to learn. You place the station, feed it wood, and pick the wooden block you want.[1]

Getting the station

Heads up if you've used this mod before: this pack changed the station's crafting recipe, so don't rely on the default recipe you might remember. The block below shows the exact recipe as it works in this pack.[4]

How the recipes work

The big selling point is that Sawmill recipes are compatible with any mod automatically. Any wood-derived block from any mod can be crafted at the station, without someone writing a recipe for each one by hand. That makes it really handy in a big modpack full of wood types and wooden decorations.[1]

The mod also avoids cluttering your world and your recipe viewer. It doesn't add a heap of new wooden blocks of its own: the only thing it adds is the Sawmill itself, which works with the wooden blocks that already exist.[1]

If a pack maker wants extra recipes, the mod supports KubeJS integration, and datapacks work as well. Keep in mind that this only describes what the mod supports. It doesn't tell you whether this pack actually adds any custom Sawmill recipes.[1]

Carpenter villagers

The Sawmill is also a villager workstation. Carpenter villagers can work at a Sawmill and offer you some useful trades. Their trades are data driven through the Moonlight villager trade system.[1]

You don't always have to build a Sawmill yourself to meet a Carpenter. The Carpenter comes with 5 unique houses that can spawn in your villages, so keep an eye out for them while you explore.[1]

Tip: Can't tell whether a block is a Sawmill? Listen for it. The workstation has its own sawing sounds, so you can often hear one before you spot it.[1]

Unverified The available sources don't explain whether the Sawmill needs power, how many items each log or plank turns into, or whether hoppers, pipes or other automation can insert and extract items. Test this in-game before you design any automated wood setup around it.

How do you progress through Sawmill?

Same as in the All the Mons 1.3.0 guide

The recipe data for this pack lists a single Sawmill item, the Saw, so there is no tier ladder to climb. It is made with a shaped crafting recipe.[3]

The pack changes this recipe from the mod's default, so the recipe below is the one that applies here, not the one you may remember from elsewhere.[3]

Unverified The sources here do not show any quests, quest chapters or progression gates for this mod, so I can't describe a quest-driven path or upgrade tiers. If you find a quest that involves the Saw, check it in the pack's quest book.

How does Sawmill work with other mods?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mons 1.3.0 guide

In this pack, the in-pack link between Sawmill and other mods is the Sawmill Upgrade for Sophisticated Backpacks and for Sophisticated Storage. Each upgrade connects the Saw to its Sophisticated mod.[3]

Sophisticated Backpacks and Sophisticated Storage

The pack changed both of these recipes, so don't assume they match what you remember from other packs. The recipe blocks below show what applies here.[3]

First up is the Sawmill Upgrade for backpacks. It is a shaped crafting recipe.[3]

Tip: The backpack and storage upgrades each use their own Upgrade Base item, so craft the one that matches the mod you want to upgrade.[3]

Wider compatibility

The mod's project page says its Sawmill recipes are compatible with any mod and can craft any wood-derived block. It also mentions KubeJS integration for adding extra recipes, and says datapacks work too.[1]

Which All the Mons quests use Sawmill?

2 parts

I looked through every quest text I had for this guide, and none of them asks you for an item from the Sawmill mod itself. No quest task uses the sawmill namespace, so this mod has no quest chapter of its own that I can show you.[5][6]

The quests that do mention a sawmill are about a different machine, the Precision Sawmill from Mekanism (Precision Sawmill). It has its own namespace, so don't mix the two up.[5][6]

Mekanism chapter

  • "Precision Sawmill" quest comes after "Machines" quest. It says the Precision Sawmill recycles wood items: beds into planks and wool, doors into planks, logs into 6 planks instead of 4, and sticks into sawdust.[6]
  • "Cardboard Box" quest comes right after it. It says the sawdust from the Precision Sawmill is what the Cardboard Box needs, and the box lets you pick up and move blocks like Obsidian and Spawners.[6]

Master Ball chapter

In the Master Ball chapter, several cutting quests accept the Precision Sawmill as one of the allowed machines, next to the Create Mechanical Saw, the Ars Nouveau Cut glyph and a few others. For the Apricorn quests, the text says to put the Apricorn into the machine to get Half Apricorns.[5]

  1. a quest in "Master Ball" comes after "Creating Pokeballs" quest. It is followed by "Half Apricorns" quest.[5]
  2. "Sawing (again)" quest comes after "Ball Lids" quest. It asks you to cut Ball Lids into Apricorn Bits, and "Apricorn Bits" quest follows it.[5]
  3. a quest in "Master Ball" comes after "Allthemodium Metal Apricorns" quest. It leads to "Half Allthemodium Metal Apricorns" quest, which asks you to cut the metal Apricorns in half.[5]
  4. a quest in "Master Ball" comes after "Half Allthemodium Metal Apricorns" quest. It adds the Atomic Forge as a new cutting option and also still accepts the Precision Sawmill.[5]

Unverified Some quest text was not available to me for this guide: 39 of the 90 Mekanism quests, plus the Immersive Engineering and Productive Trees chapters. Check the quest book for those.

Which Sawmill config options matter?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 7.1 guide

Sawmill keeps its settings in one small common config file with three options. All three are switched off in this pack. None of them change how you use the Sawmill day to day, but one of them decides where the Sawmill's recipes come from, so it's worth a quick look.[7]

Dynamic recipe generation

general.dynamic_recipes controls whether Sawmill generates its recipes dynamically. This pack sets it to false, so Sawmill recipes are not generated on the fly here. The config describes this as the option to turn off if all the recipes are going to be added manually instead, and notes that turning it off can speed up boot time slightly.[7]

This matters because the mod's big selling point is that its recipes work with any mod automatically, letting you craft any wood-derived block at the Sawmill. With dynamic generation off in this pack, what you can make at the Sawmill depends on whatever recipes are actually loaded, not on automatic generation.[1][7]

Unverified The sources don't confirm whether this pack ships its own pre-made Sawmill recipes to replace the dynamic ones, or which wooden blocks from other mods have Sawmill recipes in this pack. They also don't show the mod's default value for this option, so it's unconfirmed whether the pack changed it. If a wooden block you expected is missing from the Sawmill, check a recipe viewer in-game. This site does hold All the Mons's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Saving recipes to disk

general.save_recipes is set to false in this pack. It's a tool for modpack authors. You turn off dynamic generation, turn this on, boot the game, and then copy the generated recipes from the generated folder into your own datapack. After that you turn the option off again. As a player you can leave it alone.[7]

Recipe sorting

general.sort_recipes sorts Sawmill recipes to follow the creative tab order. This pack keeps it set to false. That's a sensible choice for multiplayer. The config warns that sorting could cause issues if the creative order differs between server and client, and says NeoForge has a bug where it won't work on servers.[7]

Watch out: If you tinker with this pack's Sawmill config for a server, think twice before enabling recipe sorting. The config itself says it won't work on NeoForge servers because of a bug.[7]
Tip: Want to add your own Sawmill recipes on top of the pack's? The mod supports KubeJS integration for extra recipes, and datapacks work as well.[1]

What changed in Sawmill between versions?

1 part

All the Mons 1.0.1 includes Sawmill version 1.21-1.7.7, the NeoForge build (file sawmill-neoforge-1.21-1.7.7.jar). The mod was first included in All the Mons 0.3.0-beta or earlier.[2]

Mod changelog entries

  • 1.21-1.7.1: added more logs and removed some others for debug purposes.[8]
  • 1.21-1.7.7: more fixes. This is the version in the pack in 1.0.1.[2][9]

The mod's own changelogs are short and don't say what was fixed, so I can't tell you anything more specific about those changes.[8][9]

Unverified No pack changelog entries about this mod were provided, so it's unconfirmed whether any pack release changed its behavior, recipes or config.
