What is Better Fusion Reactor for Mekanism?
2 parts
Better Fusion Reactor is an addon for Mekanism Generators that makes the Fusion Reactor more realistic and a lot more challenging to run. In real life, humanity has not yet achieved a stable long-term fusion reaction, and this addon brings some of that difficulty into your base.[1]
You now have to control certain reactor parameters yourself, with redstone, computers or by hand. The addon adds a new UI for the reactor controller and the reactor logic port, and the higher the temperature, the harder it is to keep the reaction stable.[1]
How the reaction works
Your job is to keep Current Reactivity as close as possible to Target Reactivity. The closer you are, the better your Reaction Efficiency, which means more energy output, more steam per tick, or more heat. Target Reactivity is a random value between 0 and 100 and it changes periodically, so you can't just ignite the reactor and walk away.[1]
- If Efficiency is below 80%, the Error Level grows. If it reaches 100%, the reactor shuts down.[1]
- If Efficiency is above 80%, the Error Level slowly falls.[1]
- The reactor can also explode if that is enabled in the config. It is disabled by default.[1]
Keep an eye on the Heat Multiplier. A lower value means a longer time between Target Reactivity resets, and it also slows how fast the Error Level changes, so for manual control try to keep it close to 0. It depends on plasma temperature, so experiment with the injection rate to find a good value. Cooling type matters too: water cooling gives a lower Heat Multiplier.[1]
If you want more energy than manual control allows, you will need to automate the reactor, for example with redstone or computers.[1]
In this pack
The pack ships the mod as the file BetterFusionReactor-1.20.1-1.4.15.jar, although the pack's mod list gives the version as 1.4.5. It has been in the pack since Project Infinity 0.1 0.0.45.4 or earlier.[2]
How do you get started with Better Fusion Reactor for Mekanism?
6 parts
This addon makes the Mekanism Generators fusion reactor harder to run, so the first job is building a reactor out of its own blocks. If you already have a reactor built, you will have to rebuild it with the blocks from this addon.[1]
Make the frame first
Start with the Fusion Reactor Frame. The controller, the ports and the logic adapter are all crafted from it, so it comes before everything else. One craft gives you 4 frames.[3]

Controller and ports
Next comes the Fusion Reactor Controller. This addon gives it a new screen, and that screen is where you keep an eye on the reaction.[1][3]

Logic adapter for automation
The Fusion Reactor Logic Adapter is the block for automating the reactor. The addon says its logic ports are used for automation, with redstone or computers. You can't just ignite the reactor and walk away, so you will want one sooner or later.[1][3][4]

Know the goal before you ignite
Your task is to keep Current Reactivity as close as possible to Target Reactivity. Doing that gives you better Reaction Efficiency, which means more energy, steam or heat. Target Reactivity is a random value between 0 and 100 that changes periodically.[1]
The Irradiator
The Irradiator uses high energy particles and radiation to transform items. Place it next to a reactor port. It turns ores into their irradiated versions, for example Irradiated Copper Ore.[3][4]

How does Better Fusion Reactor for Mekanism work?
6 parts
Better Fusion Reactor is an addon for Mekanism Generators that makes the fusion reactor harder and more realistic to run. You control certain reactor parameters with redstone, computers or by hand, and the hotter the plasma, the harder it is to keep the reaction stable. The addon adds new screens for the reactor controller and the reactor logic port. If you already have a reactor, you need to rebuild it with this mod's blocks.[1]
The balancing act
Your job is to keep Current Reactivity (CR) as close as possible to Target Reactivity (TR). The closer you are, the better your Reaction Efficiency, which means more energy output, more steam per tick, or more heat, depending on how you run the reactor.[1][4]
The catch is that TR is a random value between 0 and 100, and it changes periodically. So you can't ignite the reactor and walk away. You either spend time controlling it manually or build automation.[1]
- If Efficiency is below 80%, the Error Level grows. If the Error Level reaches 100%, the reactor shuts down.[1]
- If Efficiency is above 80%, the Error Level slowly falls.[1]
- The controller's own help text also tells you to keep EF higher than 50% by adjusting.[4]
Unverified The mod page says the reactor can explode when it fails if that is enabled in its config, and that this is off by default. This pack has no config file for the mod that I could check, so whether it changes that setting is unverified.
Heat Multiplier (Hm)
Hm decides how often TR changes. A lower value means a longer time between TR resets. It also affects how fast the Error Level changes. For manual control, try to keep Hm close to 0. At some conditions Hm becomes 0.[1][4]
Hm depends on plasma temperature, so experiment with the injection rate to find a value that works for you. It also depends on the cooling type: water cooling gives a lower Hm.[1][4]
Building the multiblock
The reactor parts are the Fusion Reactor Frame, Fusion Reactor Controller, Fusion Reactor Port and Fusion Reactor Logic Adapter. In this pack the frame is the base part: the controller, port and logic adapter recipes all use a frame, and one frame craft gives you 4 frames. The port recipe gives you 2 ports.[3]

Automating with logic adapters
The Fusion Reactor Logic Adapter is how you automate the reactor. Logic ports read values out as redstone signals and take redstone impulses in as commands.[4]
- Efficiency and Error Level outputs: a full signal strength of 15 means 100%, and each step of signal strength is about 7%.[4]
- Injection up and down inputs: a redstone impulse of any strength triggers them.[4]
- Reactivity up and down inputs: an impulse raises or lowers CR by the strength of the impulse, from 1 to 15.[4]
Irradiator and solidified waste
The Irradiator is described as using High Energy Particles and Radiation to transform items, and its in-game hint says to place it next to a reactor port.[4]

The pack has one irradiating recipe for each of seven metals. Any ore of that metal becomes the irradiated version: Irradiated Copper Ore, Irradiated Gold Ore, Irradiated Iron Ore, Irradiated Lead Ore, Irradiated Osmium Ore, Irradiated Tin Ore and Irradiated Uranium Ore.[3]
Solidified Nuclear Waste comes from Mekanism's crystallizing recipe, which turns enriched nuclear waste into it. The pack's own script also uses it as an ingredient in the Legendary Crafting Table recipe, so it matters beyond the reactor.[3][5]

How do you progress through Better Fusion Reactor for Mekanism?
5 parts
The sources for this mod don't describe formal tiers, so the clearest way to read the progression is by what each recipe asks of you. The path below follows the in-pack recipes from the cheapest part up to the endgame use of the mod's waste product.[3]
Early: the Redstone Capacitor
The Redstone Capacitor is the entry point. It only needs a basic-tier circuit, so you can make it long before the rest of the mod.[3]

Mid: Laser Focus Matrix and the reactor frame
The Laser Focus Matrix gives you 2 per craft. The Fusion Reactor Frame is the real gate: it gives 4 per craft and needs an ultimate-tier alloy.[3]

Late: controller, ports and logic adapter
The Fusion Reactor Controller, the Fusion Reactor Port and the Fusion Reactor Logic Adapter are all built from the frame. The controller and the port both need an ultimate-tier circuit, and the port recipe makes 2 at a time.[3]

Irradiator and irradiated ores
The Irradiator also needs an ultimate-tier circuit, so it sits at the same level as the controller. The mod adds irradiating recipes for copper, gold, iron, lead, osmium, tin and uranium. Each one turns a normal ore into its irradiated version, for example Irradiated Uranium Ore.[3]

Endgame: Solidified Nuclear Waste
Solidified Nuclear Waste is made by crystallizing enriched nuclear waste from Mekanism.[3]

This pack also uses it as an ingredient in its own Extended Crafting Legendary Table recipe, which is a custom script rather than a mod default. So the waste is worth setting up if you are heading for that table.[5]
How does Better Fusion Reactor for Mekanism work with other mods?
4 parts
Better Fusion Reactor is an addon for Mekanism Generators, and in this pack its recipes lean heavily on Mekanism. Everything below comes from the in-pack recipes.[1][3]
Building the reactor with Mekanism parts
The Fusion Reactor Frame and the Fusion Reactor Controller are both made from Mekanism items, plus tag-based slots that accept any matching item, such as ultimate circuits. The frame recipe makes 4 frames per craft and uses any polonium pellet, which links it to the waste chain further down.[3]

The nuclear waste chain
This mod's Solidified Nuclear Waste is made in Mekanism's crystallizing recipe from enriched nuclear waste.[3]
Crystallizing (mekanism)
- Enriched Nuclear Waste
Recipe id: mekanism:crystallizing/waste_to_solid_waste
From there, 7 pieces of Solidified Nuclear Waste can be irradiated into a Polonium Pellet. That is a Mekanism item coming out of this mod's recipe, and the frame recipe above takes a polonium pellet in return.[3]
Irradiated ores and sulfuric acid
The mod's irradiated ores go through Mekanism's dissolution process with Liquid Sulfuric Acid. There is a recipe for each of these: Irradiated Copper Ore, Irradiated Gold Ore, Irradiated Iron Ore, Irradiated Lead Ore, Irradiated Osmium Ore, Irradiated Tin Ore and Irradiated Uranium Ore.[3]
Dissolution (mekanism)

The copper version as an example, the other ores follow the same pattern with Liquid Sulfuric Acid.
Endgame crafting
Solidified Nuclear Waste also shows up well outside Mekanism. The pack changed the Legendary Crafting Table recipe, a table recipe that mixes items from many mods, and it includes Solidified Nuclear Waste among them. So the waste chain above matters for more than polonium if you're heading for the Legendary Crafting Table.[3]
