What is Iron Furnaces?
1 part
Iron Furnaces adds several tiers of furnace to the game. It's inspired by cpw's Iron Chests mod, so think of it as a tiered upgrade path for your smelting setup.[1]
It's built for players who want to maximize smelting efficiency. The mod advertises very fast smelting, reconfigurable sides, and augments for smoking and blasting. If you're tired of waiting on a plain furnace, this is the mod to look at.[1]
The pack ships Iron Furnaces 4.3.2. The mod also has explicit compatibility with JEI and Project MMO.[1][2]
Where it fits in the pack
The mod shows up in the quest book. In the "power" chapter, the quest a quest in "Power" has a single task: obtain Augment: Generator. The quest has no title in the pack files.[3]
Unverified I couldn't confirm the furnace tier recipes, the pack's config values, or what the Generator augment does here, so they aren't covered in this overview. The mod also has no in-jar guidebook, and it is not on the ATM Star quest path.
How do you get started with Iron Furnaces?
4 parts
Iron Furnaces adds a few different tiers of furnace, with reconfigurable sides and augments for things like smoking and blasting. The order below starts with the Copper Furnace and works up, then adds an augment.[1][4]
Start with a Copper Furnace
Your first stop is the Copper Furnace. The pack changed this recipe from the mod's own, so follow the one below.[4]

Step up to the Iron Furnace
Next comes the Iron Furnace. There are two recipes for it: one starts from a plain furnace, and the other starts from a copper furnace.[4]

Add an augment
Augments change how a furnace behaves, and you right-click to insert one. The Augment: Speed halves the cook time for all recipes, but it uses up twice the amount of fuel.[4][5]

If fuel is your bottleneck, the Augment: Fuel Efficiency makes fuel heat the furnace twice as much. The trade-off is that cook time becomes 25% slower for all recipes.[4][5]

There are two specialist augments too. The Augment: Blasting only allows blasting recipes, and the Augment: Smoking only allows smoking recipes.[4][5]
Where to go next
- Silver is the next branch up. Both silver furnace recipes were changed by the pack, so check them in the recipe viewer before you plan a build around them.[4]
- The Wireless Heat Receiver goes in the fuel slot of a furnace, and its tooltip says it only works from Iron tier and above.[5]
- The power chapter of the quest book has a quest whose task is the Augment: Generator. With it, heat from the furnace generates power, but the furnace can no longer smelt items. See a quest in "Power".[3][5]
How does Iron Furnaces work?
6 parts
Iron Furnaces adds a whole ladder of furnace tiers. In this pack each one is defined by three things in the common config: how many ticks one smelting operation takes, how much power it generates when used as a generator, and which energy tier it belongs to. A regular furnace takes 200 ticks per operation, so every number below is measured against that.[1][6]
Smelting speed
The pack changed the speed of every standard furnace, and every change makes it faster. Each furnace has its own speed key, for example furnaces.copper_furnace.speed. These are the pack values in ticks per smelting operation, with the mod default in brackets.[6]
- Copper Furnace: 50 ticks (mod default 180).[5][6]
- Iron Furnace: 50 ticks (mod default 160).[5][6]
- Silver Furnace: 38 ticks (mod default 140).[5][6]
- Golden Furnace: 38 ticks (mod default 120).[5][6]
- Diamond Furnace: 30 ticks (mod default 80).[5][6]
- Emerald Furnace: 20 ticks (mod default 40).[5][6]
- Crystal Furnace: 15 ticks (mod default 40).[5][6]
- Obsidian Furnace: 15 ticks (mod default 20).[5][6]
- Netherite Furnace: 2 ticks (mod default 5).[5][6]
- Rainbow Furnace (the Rainbow Furnace): 10 ticks (mod default 20).[5][6]
The config also has entries for the Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium furnaces. These are tier 2 and smelt several items at once. The values listed below match the mod defaults in the pack's config.[6]
- Allthemodium Furnace: smelts 16 items at once (modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.mult) with a speed of 5 ticks (modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.speed).[6]
- Vibranium Furnace: smelts 32 items at once (modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.mult) with a speed of 3 ticks (modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.speed).[6]
- Unobtainium Furnace: smelts 64 items at once (modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.mult) with a speed of 1 tick (modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.speed).[6]
The language file also has upgrade items that lead up this chain, from Netherite to Allthemodium, then Vibranium, then Unobtainium.[5]
Energy tiers
Every furnace belongs to tier 0, 1 or 2, and the tier decides how much energy its buffer holds: 80,000 for tier 0, 200,000 for tier 1 and 1,000,000 for tier 2 (furnaces.energy.tier_0, furnaces.energy.tier_1, furnaces.energy.tier_2). The pack keeps all of these at the mod defaults.[6]
- Tier 0: the Copper and Iron furnaces.[6]
- Tier 1: the Silver and Golden furnaces.[6]
- Tier 2: Diamond, Emerald, Crystal, Obsidian, Netherite and Rainbow.[6]
Using a furnace as a generator
The Augment: Generator turns heat from the furnace into power, but the furnace can then no longer smelt items. How much RF per tick you get depends on the furnace, and the pack changed every one of these values. Copper makes 100 (mod default 40), Iron 60 (40), Silver 120 (100), Golden 140 (160), Diamond 210 (240), Emerald 290 (320), Crystal 320 (360), Obsidian 450 (500), Netherite 600 (1,000) and Rainbow 1,200 (2,000).[5][6]
The Rainbow Furnace has its own rules. Its tooltips say that for power generation, one of each tier of furnace must be an active generator without a full buffer. It outputs energy to any side configured as output rather than adding to its internal buffer, and you can only have one Rainbow Generator. The config also has a separate furnaces.rainbow_furnace.rainbow_generation value of 50,000, described as how much power the Rainbow Furnace will generate. The pack leaves that one at its mod default.[5][6]

Augments
Augments are items you right-click into a furnace to change how it behaves. Here is what the tooltips say each one does.[5]
- Augment: Speed: halves the cooktime for all recipes, but uses up twice the amount of fuel.[5]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency: fuel heats up the furnace twice as much, but cooktime is slowed by 25% for all recipes.[5]
- Augment: Blasting: only allows blasting recipes.[5]
- Augment: Smoking: only allows smoking recipes.[5]
- Augment: Factory: converts the furnace into a factory that uses power for heat instead of fuel.[5]
- Augment: Inventory Config: adds configurable sides for item transfer.[5]

Redstone control comes from augment modes too. Redstone Control mode stops smelting while the furnace gets a redstone signal, and Redstone Inverse Control mode only smelts while it gets one. Comparator mode makes the furnace act as an internal comparator that outputs the signal to all sides. Comparator Subtraction mode does the same but lets you subtract a signal strength set in the furnace GUI. Right-click in the air to change mode.[5]
Experience works through its own augment as well. Its tooltips say smelting experience is either ejected to nearby fluid tanks or given to the player who placed the furnace, and you sneak and right-click in the air to switch between the two.[5]
Wireless heat
The Wireless Heat Transmitter takes Forge Energy and powers every Wireless Heat Receiver bound to it. You bind a receiver by placing it in the transmitter. A receiver then goes in the fuel slot of a furnace, and it only works from Iron tier and above. If the transmitter shows it has not been bound to an energy source, it has no link yet.[5]
Upgrading and other details
Furnaces can be upgraded in place with upgrade items such as Stone to Copper or Iron to Gold. Sneak and right-click the furnace to apply one. Some tiers have two upgrade routes, for example Obsidian can come from Emerald or from Crystal.[5]
The pack changed the crafting of the Copper and Silver furnaces, so check these recipes rather than relying on the mod's defaults.[4]

Recipes stored in a furnace can hold experience up to furnaces.recipeMaxXPLevel.level levels, which is 30,971 XP. Anything above that is voided. The pack keeps the default of 100 levels. Light updates are enabled in this pack (misc.misc.lightupdates is false), so furnaces still emit light.[6]
Two cosmetic items round things off. Right-click a furnace with the Furnace Spooka-lator to spookalize it, and sneak and right-click to cleanse it. Right-click a furnace with the Furnace Wrapping Papers to wrap it as a gift, and sneak and right-click to open the gift.[5]
How do you progress through Iron Furnaces?
5 parts
The furnaces in this pack form a ladder. You start at Copper Furnace and Iron Furnace, climb through Silver Furnace, Golden Furnace, Diamond Furnace, Emerald Furnace and Crystal Furnace, then reach Obsidian Furnace, Netherite Furnace and finally the Rainbow Furnace. Most tiers are crafted from the tier before them, so you work upward one step at a time.[4]
Early tiers: copper, iron, silver, gold
The Copper Furnace and the Iron Furnace are your entry points. Both are crafted from a plain vanilla furnace plus an ingot of their metal. The Iron Furnace also has an alternate route that builds on a Copper Furnace. The pack has changed the Copper Furnace recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults.[4]

The Diamond Furnace is built on a Golden Furnace. From there the path splits. The Emerald Furnace and the Crystal Furnace both build on the Diamond Furnace. The Obsidian Furnace can then be made from either an Emerald Furnace or a Crystal Furnace, so you can pick whichever branch suits your resources. None of these recipes are changed by the pack.[4]

How does Iron Furnaces work with other mods?
2 parts
Iron Furnaces connects to the rest of the pack through a handful of custom machine recipes. They combine Iron Furnaces items with items from other mods, and their recipe ids all start with world_engine. The pack added every one of them.[4]
Augment recipes
Two of these recipes involve Iron Furnaces augments: one for Augment: Generator and one for Augment: Factory. Each mixes in items from other mods, so these augments are tied into the wider pack and aren't stand-alone Iron Furnaces content here. The recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack versions.[4]

Custom Machine (custommachinery)

The generator augment also shows up in the quest book. Quest a quest in "Power" in the power chapter has Augment: Generator as its task.[3]
Iron Furnace and ProjectE
The remaining recipe involves the plain Iron Furnace and the Energy Collector MK1, so it links Iron Furnaces with ProjectE. Check the recipe block below for the exact in-pack setup.[4]
Custom Machine (custommachinery)

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Iron Furnaces?
Iron Furnaces only shows up in one quest chapter in this pack: the "power" chapter. It's a small footprint, so there's no long questline to follow here.[3]
The quest a quest in "Power" has no title in the pack files. Its task is to obtain or submit Augment: Generator, the Augment: Generator.[3]
Since this is the only Iron Furnaces quest in the sources, there's no order to worry about within the mod. The sources also don't say which quests come before or after it in the power chapter, so check the chapter in-game to see where it sits.[3]
Unverified The quest's rewards and its dependencies on other quests are not shown in the available sources.
Which Iron Furnaces config options matter?
3 parts
Everything here lives in the Iron Furnaces common config. The pack rewrote the speed and RF generation of every standard furnace tier, so don't rely on mod defaults you may have seen elsewhere. Speed is the number of ticks for one smelting operation, where 200 ticks is what a regular furnace takes. Lower means faster. Generation is how much RF the furnace makes per tick.[6]
Speed and generation the pack changed
Every furnace below has both values changed from the mod default. Each line gives the pack's speed in ticks first, then its RF per tick, with the mod default in brackets.[6]
- Copper: furnaces.copper_furnace.speed is 50 (default 180) and furnaces.copper_furnace.generation is 100 (default 40).[6]
- Iron: furnaces.iron_furnace.speed is 50 (default 160) and furnaces.iron_furnace.generation is 60 (default 40).[6]
- Gold: furnaces.gold_furnace.speed is 38 (default 120) and furnaces.gold_furnace.generation is 140 (default 160).[6]
- Silver: furnaces.silver_furnace.speed is 38 (default 140) and furnaces.silver_furnace.generation is 120 (default 100).[6]
- Diamond: furnaces.diamond_furnace.speed is 30 (default 80) and furnaces.diamond_furnace.generation is 210 (default 240).[6]
- Emerald: furnaces.emerald_furnace.speed is 20 (default 40) and furnaces.emerald_furnace.generation is 290 (default 320).[6]
- Crystal: furnaces.crystal_furnace.speed is 15 (default 40) and furnaces.crystal_furnace.generation is 320 (default 360).[6]
- Obsidian: furnaces.obsidian_furnace.speed is 15 (default 20) and furnaces.obsidian_furnace.generation is 450 (default 500).[6]
- Netherite: furnaces.netherite_furnace.speed is 2 (default 5) and furnaces.netherite_furnace.generation is 600 (default 1000).[6]
- Rainbow: furnaces.rainbow_furnace.speed is 10 (default 20) and furnaces.rainbow_furnace.generation is 1,200 (default 2,000).[6]
Every tier got faster. Generation went up for copper, iron and silver, and down for the rest. Netherite at 2 ticks per operation is the fastest of the standard tiers.[6]
Values left at the mod default
Tiers match the mod: copper and iron are tier 0, gold and silver are tier 1, and diamond, emerald, crystal, obsidian, netherite and the million furnace are tier 2. For example, see furnaces.gold_furnace.tier and furnaces.million_furnace.tier.[6]
Energy storage is also unchanged: furnaces.energy.tier_0 is 80,000, furnaces.energy.tier_1 is 200,000 and furnaces.energy.tier_2 is 1,000,000. The Rainbow Furnace's separate furnaces.rainbow_furnace.rainbow_generation stays at 50,000.[6]
furnaces.recipeMaxXPLevel.level is 100, the mod default. That is how many experience levels a furnace can store in its recipes before the excess is voided. The config notes that 100 levels is 30,971 XP.[6]
misc.misc.lightupdates is false. Setting it to true would stop furnaces emitting light, so in this pack they still glow.[6]
Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium furnaces
The three modded furnaces use their mod defaults. Besides speed and generation, they have a mult option, which is how many items they smelt at once.[6]
- Allthemodium: modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.speed is 5, modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.mult is 16 and modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.generation is 2,000.[6]
- Vibranium: modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.speed is 3, modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.mult is 32 and modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.generation is 3,000.[6]
- Unobtainium: modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.speed is 1, modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.mult is 64 and modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.generation is 5,000.[6]
