Iron Chests in FTB StoneBlock 4

Iron Chests is a storage mod that adds chests for the various metals in vanilla Minecraft, each with a different size.^[1]

The pack includes Iron Chests version 1.21-neoforge-16.0.7.^[2]

The chest tiers

The pack's quest book lists these chests: Copper Chest, Iron Chest, Gold Chest, Diamond Chest, Obsidian Chest and Crystal Chest.^[3]

Upgrading instead of replacing

The mod has upgrade items for moving a chest up a tier. These are the ones the quest book lists:^[3]

• Wood to Copper Chest Upgrade and Wood to Iron Chest Upgrade take a wooden chest to copper or iron.^[3]
• Copper to Iron Chest Upgrade moves copper to iron.^[3]
• Iron to Gold Chest Upgrade moves iron to gold.^[3]
• Gold to Diamond Chest Upgrade moves gold to diamond.^[3]
• Diamond to Crystal Chest Upgrade and Diamond to Obsidian Chest Upgrade split the top end, so diamond can go to either crystal or obsidian.^[3]

Where it fits in the pack

The quest book covers this mod in its logistics storage chapter. The quest a quest in "Storage" is untitled and has two tasks: one accepts any of the chests above, and the other accepts any of the upgrade items listed above.^[3]

Unverified Whether the ATM Star path uses this mod is not shown in the sources here. The pack's quest book is where that would be told.

One thing to know: the custom shulker boxes that used to be part of this mod moved to their own mod, Iron Shulker Boxes, in 1.13. They are not part of Iron Chests.^[1]

Iron Chests adds bigger chests in a tier ladder, and in this pack that ladder runs copper, iron, gold, diamond, then either crystal or obsidian. You don't need any machines to start. You just step up one tier at a time as you get the materials.^[1][4]

Your first upgrade chest

Start with a Copper Chest. It is made from a wooden chest, so you can build it as soon as you have copper.^[4]

Step 2: Chest upgrade items

The mod also has upgrade items, each named for the step it covers. The ones that start from wood are Wood to Copper Chest Upgrade and Wood to Iron Chest Upgrade. I haven't confirmed how upgrades are applied from the sources I have, so check in-game before you use up a stack of them.^[4]

Climb the ladder

Each higher tier has its own upgrade item, and each higher chest can also be crafted from the chest below it. Here is the order, with the upgrade item for each step:^[4]

Trapped chests and the quest

Every tier has a trapped version, for example the Trapped Iron Chest. You make it from the matching normal chest, so it only matters once you need redstone output from storage.^[4]

The storage questline has a quest for this mod, a quest in "Storage". It asks you to get any one of the Iron Chests chests and any one of the upgrade items, so your first copper or iron chest and a first upgrade will cover it.^[3]

Iron Chests is a storage mod, so there are no machines, power or fluids to manage here. The mod adds chests for the various metals in vanilla Minecraft, each with a different size. The mechanics that matter are the tier ladder, the upgrade items and the trapped variants.^[1]

The chest tiers in this pack are Copper Chest, Iron Chest, Gold Chest, Diamond Chest, Crystal Chest and Obsidian Chest. There is also DirtChest 9000!, which starts from a wooden chest too.^[4]

Moving up a tier

Each step up the ladder has a dedicated upgrade item, and the chest recipes also take the previous chest directly. Shulker boxes

The custom shulker boxes that used to be part of this mod were moved to their own mod, Iron Shulker Boxes, in 1.13. They are not part of Iron Chests itself.^[1]

Iron Chests gives you a ladder of storage tiers, and in this pack every rung has a crafting recipe. Each step up has a chest recipe that takes the previous tier's chest, and most steps also have a matching upgrade item.^[4]

The tier path

1. Start with a wooden chest. The pack has recipes that turn a wooden chest into a Copper Chest or straight into an Iron Chest.^[4]
2. From a Copper Chest you can craft an Iron Chest, or use the Copper to Iron Chest Upgrade.^[4]
3. From an Iron Chest you can craft a Gold Chest, or use the Iron to Gold Chest Upgrade.^[4]
4. From a Gold Chest you can craft a Diamond Chest, or use the Gold to Diamond Chest Upgrade.^[4]
5. The Diamond Chest is where the path branches into the Crystal Chest and the Obsidian Chest. Their upgrade items are the Diamond to Crystal Chest Upgrade and the Diamond to Obsidian Chest Upgrade.^[4]

There are also wood upgrades, the Wood to Copper Chest Upgrade and the Wood to Iron Chest Upgrade, for the first step off the wooden chest.^[4]

Quest

The pack's quest book has one quest for this mod, a quest in "Storage", in the logistics storage chapter. It has two item tasks. The first accepts any one of the Copper, Iron, Gold, Diamond, Obsidian or Crystal chests. The second accepts any one of the upgrade items listed above.^[3]

Iron Chests connects to other mods in this pack through one in-pack recipe. The pack added it, so it is not a default from the mod.^[4]

It is a World Engine machine recipe (a Custom Machinery recipe) with an Iron Chest, an Ender Chest, a Blazegold Ingot and Obsidian on the input side. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:^[4]

Quests

The quest that covers Iron Chests is a quest in "Storage", in the logistics storage chapter. Its tasks ask for any one of the Iron Chests chests and any one of the upgrade items, and nothing from another mod, so it is not a cross-mod link.^[3]

Iron Chests shows up in one quest in this pack, and it lives in the Logistics storage chapter. It's a short section, because that's all the pack's quest file gives us for this mod.^[3]

The quest a quest in "Storage" has no title in the quest file, and it has two tasks. Each task is an item check where any one of the listed items counts.^[3]

1. Chest task: hand in any one of Copper Chest, Iron Chest, Gold Chest, Diamond Chest, Obsidian Chest or Crystal Chest.^[3]
2. Upgrade task: hand in any one of Wood to Copper Chest Upgrade, Wood to Iron Chest Upgrade, Copper to Iron Chest Upgrade, Iron to Gold Chest Upgrade, Gold to Diamond Chest Upgrade, Diamond to Crystal Chest Upgrade or Diamond to Obsidian Chest Upgrade.^[3]

Unverified The quest file doesn't say what reward this quest gives, which quests it depends on, or where it sits in the chapter's order, so the order in which you'll reach it is unverified.

Iron Chests has been in the pack since FTB StoneBlock 4 1.0.0 or earlier. Version 1.21.0 ships with Iron Chests 1.21-neoforge-16.0.7, so that is the build you are playing with.^[2]

What changed in 16.0.7

The mod's own changelog for this version lists two bug fixes:^[5]

• BlockEntity culling now matches vanilla chests.^[5]
• Applied Energistics 2 can now access the inventories of Iron Chests, which is handy if you want to connect your storage to an ME network.^[5]

Iron Shulker Boxes

The mod's changelog notes that the Iron Shulker Box variants have been in their own separate mod since 1.13.2. They are not part of Iron Chests itself.^[5]
