Classic Pipes is a mod in FTB StoneBlock 4 1.23.0, where it is version 1.1.7. An item and fluid transport mod inspired by old versions of Buildcraft and Logistics Pipes, built from scratch to stylistically match up with modern Minecraft. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Classic Pipes?

1 part

Classic Pipes is an item and fluid transport mod inspired by old versions of Buildcraft and Logistics Pipes. It adds basic item and fluid transport pipes, and it also brings a system of networked pipes. You hook those up to your chests and machines to sort, fetch and craft items automatically. This pack ships version 1.1.7 of the mod.[1][2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The pack's quest book covers Classic Pipes in the chapter "Logistics & Automation". It belongs to the group "Forgotten Knowledge" and is chapter 14 of 22 in the book. The chapter has 13 quests, and its own intro says you'll find most of the ways to handle transferring items, energy, fluids and more there.[3]

Classic Pipes gets one quest in that chapter, a quest in "Logistics & Automation", and the book gives it no title of its own. It describes the mod as bringing back the original Buildcraft feel with pipes that are easy to craft and use. The basic wooden pipes carry items and fluids, and the Copper versions extract items or fluids when they get redstone power. The quest also says there are several other tiers of pipes that do different things.[3]

The sources don't give the order of quests inside the chapter, so I can't say which quest comes right before or after it. What they do show is that it sits among the other transport options in the same chapter: "Pipez" quest, "XNet" quest, "Mekanism Pipes" quest, "EnderIO Conduits" quest, "LaserIO" quest, "Oritech Pipes" quest and "Create Item Options" quest, among others.[3]

Watch out: The quest book warns that when these pipes overflow, they will lag the world. Build an overflow system before you run big flows through them.[3]

How do you get started with Classic Pipes?

5 parts

Classic Pipes is an item and fluid transport mod. On top of basic pipes, it adds a system of networked pipes that you hook up to chests and machines to sort, fetch and craft items automatically. Start simple, then grow into the networked side.[1]

Copper Pipe: get items moving

Your first pipe should be the Copper Pipe. It extracts items from containers, so it is the piece that pulls things out of your storage. The pack changed this recipe from the mod's default, so use the one below.[4][5]

The networked side

Once basic transport works, look at the Networked Matching Pipe. It routes items matching the contents of the adjacent container, and the pack has three recipes for it, all changed from the mod's.[4][5]

The mod also has Routing, Provider, Request, Stocking and Recipe Pipes. Routing Pipes go at the junctions of your network. A Request Pipe lets you request items from the network, and a Recipe Pipe handles auto-crafting.[5]

Tip: The Classic Pipes project page points to a video tutorial and a wiki for the mod's basics. Remember that recipes in this pack can differ from the mod's defaults.[1][4]

How does Classic Pipes work?

7 parts

Classic Pipes is an item and fluid transport mod inspired by old Buildcraft and Logistics Pipes. Besides basic pipes that move items and fluids, it adds a system of networked pipes. You hook these up to chests and machines, and they sort, fetch and craft items for you automatically.[1]

This section sticks to what the mod's own descriptions and the pack's recipes confirm. Exact numbers like speeds, ranges and capacities are left out because the sources don't give them.[1][5]

Basic item pipes

Each pipe type has a job, and the mod's tooltips describe them like this:[5]

The mod also has a tooltip line for inverted redstone behaviour. How redstone control works beyond that line is not covered by the sources.[5]

Fluid pipes

Most item pipes have a fluid counterpart that follows the same idea. Copper Fluid Pipe extracts fluids from tanks, and Advanced Copper Fluid Pipe extracts fluid faster and can be filtered. Iron Fluid Pipe routes fluids in a single direction, and Lapis Fluid Pipe prioritises inserting fluids into tanks.[4][5]

Brick Fluid Pipe never connects to tanks. Nether Brick Fluid Pipe only connects to wooden and brick pipes.[4][5]

In the pack, each wooden fluid pipe can be made from its matching wooden item pipe plus honeycomb. For example, you can upgrade an Acacia Wooden Pipe into an Acacia Wooden Fluid Pipe with this recipe:[4]

Pack recipe changes

The pack changes several copper-tier recipes, so don't rely on the mod's defaults. The Copper Pipe is changed, and so is the direct-craft recipe for the Copper Fluid Pipe. The Advanced Copper Pipe recipes, the Diamond Fluid Pipe and the upgrade route from a Copper Fluid Pipe to an Advanced Copper Fluid Pipe are changed too. The wooden, brick and bone pipe recipes in the dump are plain mod recipes.[4]

Networked pipes

The networked pipes are the mod's headline feature. Each one has a role in the network:[1][5]

  • Routing Pipe routes items to other networked pipes. Place it at the junctions of your network.[5]
  • Provider Pipe allows the network to pull from the adjacent container.[5]
  • Request Pipe lets you request items from a network.[5]
  • Matching Pipe routes items matching the contents of the adjacent container.[5]
  • Storage Pipe combines the functions of a Matching Pipe and a Provider Pipe. It is handy for a quick, simple storage system.[5]
  • Stocking Pipe keeps a container stocked with items from a network.[5]
  • Recipe Pipe routes ingredients for auto-crafting requested items. Attach it to a Crafter or another processing system.[5]
  • Pipe Slicer requests items to any networked pipe.[5]

Pipe settings

Several networked pipes have checkbox options. Here is what each one does, as the mod's tooltips describe it:[5]

  • Default route: items are routed to this pipe when they have nowhere else to go.[5]
  • Active stocking: the Stocking Pipe actively requests items from the network. With it off, the pipe only stocks the container passively, when matching items happen to pass through the network.[5]
  • Leave one: one item of each type stays in the attached container and is inaccessible to the network.[5]
  • Match components: the components of an item (damage, enchantments, etc.) must match the item in the filter. An alternate version of this option requires them to match the item in the container instead.[5]
  • Blocking mode: the pipe holds ingredients until the previous result arrives. The mod recommends leaving this on to prevent overflowing.[5]
Tip: For auto-crafting, keep blocking mode on for your Recipe Pipes. The mod itself recommends it to stop machines from overflowing with ingredients.[5]

Filter labels

Label items help with filtering. Use the Mod Label with an item in your offhand to set the filter to that item's mod. Use the Tag Label with an offhand item to cycle through that item's tags.[5]

Auto-crafting

A Recipe Pipe tooltip shows which ingredient it is sending and which pipe it expects a result from. The mod also has advancements for requesting an item that takes at least 8 crafting steps and for using a Recipe Pipe to craft a Recipe Pipe, so long crafting chains are an intended use.[5]

How do you progress through Classic Pipes?

5 parts

Unverified The sources here do not show any quest chapter that covers Classic Pipes, so there is no quest order to follow. The tiers below come from the in-pack recipes only.

Classic Pipes progression in this pack is recipe-driven. You start with simple pipes, move up to metal and gem pipes, and then reach the networked pipes. Several of the middle-tier recipes were changed by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults.[4]

Basic pipes

The entry-level pipes are the wooden pipes, one per wood type, such as Oak Wooden Pipe and Cherry Wooden Pipe. The same tier includes Brick Pipe, Nether Brick Pipe, Bone Pipe, Flint Pipe and Obsidian Pipe. All of these use the mod's own recipes, unchanged by the pack.[4]

Fluid pipes

Each pipe type above has a fluid counterpart, such as Copper Fluid Pipe and Diamond Fluid Pipe. You can craft them from scratch or by upgrading the matching item pipe. For copper, iron, lapis and diamond, the from-scratch recipe is pack-changed, while the upgrade recipe is the mod's own.[4]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Classic Pipes?

1 part

In this pack, Classic Pipes appears in the "Logistics & Automation" chapter. That chapter is in the "Forgotten Knowledge" group, is chapter 14 of 22 in the quest book, and has 13 quests. The Classic Pipes quest is a quest in "Logistics & Automation", which has no title of its own.[3]

The quest text says Classic Pipes brings back that original Buildcraft feel with pipes that are easy to craft and use. The basic wooden pipes transport items and fluids. The copper versions extract items or fluids when they are given redstone power. The quest also says there are several other tiers of pipes that do different things, so it's worth checking them out.[3]

Watch out: The quest warns that when these pipes overflow, they will lag the world. Make sure to create an overflow system.[3]

The rest of the chapter

The chapter has a checkmark quest, a quest in "Logistics & Automation", whose text says this chapter holds most of the ways to handle transferring items, energy, fluids and more. Classic Pipes is one option among many, and the other quests in the chapter are:[3]

What changed in Classic Pipes between versions?

4 parts

FTB StoneBlock 4 1.21.0 ships Classic Pipes 1.1.7, and the pack has included the mod since 1.0.0 or earlier. The changes below come from the mod's own changelogs, newest first. I've left out entries aimed at other game versions or loaders, since this pack runs the NeoForge 1.21.1 build.[2]

1.1.7 (the version in this pack)

  • Routing Pipes and Request Pipes now show an arrow in the unlinked texture, so you can see which direction they will send items.[6]
  • Fixed recipes with shared intermediate ingredients jamming because the network was requesting Air.[6]
  • Routing Pipes directly next to containers now let items that don't fit in the container be re-routed to a default route.[6]

1.1.4 to 1.1.6

  • 1.1.6: Fluid Pipes no longer wipe fluid data such as Create potion types, and a crash when extracting empty fluid stacks is fixed.[7]
  • 1.1.6: "match components" is no longer ignored in Stocking Pipes, and fluid filters now accept fluids that have no defined bucket item.[7]
  • 1.1.5: Pipes render fewer items the further they are from the camera, which improves performance. "Leave One" now works in Storage Pipes, and some serialization problems with large item stacks are fixed.[8]
  • 1.1.4: Fixed a crash when other mods, such as Trash Slot, render custom slots inside the request GUI.[9]
  • 1.1.4: Networks no longer undercount items in oversized container slots, such as upgraded Sophisticated Storage containers.[9]
  • 1.1.4: Stocking and Matching Pipes can now see non-extractable container slots, so Tech Reborn machines no longer get overstocked.[9]
  • 1.1.4: On NeoForge, pipes stay connected to item handlers that have no accessible slots, which fixed a compatibility issue with machines from FTB Stuff & Things.[9]

1.1.0

  • Recipe Pipes support Tag Labels. A recipe that accepts any item from a tag searches the network for any matching item, and the + button in JEI inserts Tag Labels into the crafting grid automatically.[10]
  • Labels are now invisible to the network, so you need to store them separately.[10]
  • Added Inverted Copper Pipes, which work like Copper Pipes with inverted redstone behaviour. Advanced and Fluid variants exist too.[10]
  • Added the Nether Brick Pipe, which attaches to containers and Wooden Pipes but not to any kind of special pipe.[10]
  • Items delivered by Request Pipes no longer have a pickup delay and are ejected at a lower velocity. Items that can't be routed are now ejected from the network instead of being distributed arbitrarily.[10]
  • Fixed blocking mode not working, Stocking Pipes over-sending to many modded blocks, and items getting stuck forever in default route Storage Pipes attached to full containers.[10]

1.0.x releases

  • 1.0.10: One of the Advanced Copper Pipe recipes no longer requires a Netherite Ingot.[11]
  • 1.0.8: Fixed a crash when some modded blocks try to insert into pipes.[12]
  • 1.0.7: Pipe networks support multiple recipes for the same item.[13]
  • 1.0.7: Recipe Pipes gained a "One at a time" option. Uncheck it and the pipe sends all its ingredients at once instead of one craft or process at a time.[13]
  • 1.0.7: Added advancements that unlock pipe recipes in the vanilla recipe book, and fixed container-adjacent Networked Pipes not disconnecting from removed containers.[13]
