Sophisticated Storage is a mod in FTB StoneBlock 4 1.23.0, where it is version 1.6.2. Storage mod with multiple tiers and functional upgrades (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Sophisticated Storage?

1 part

Sophisticated Storage is in this pack at version 1.5.91, so everything in this guide describes that version.[1]

The pack's quest book gives the mod its own chapter in the logistics section, called storage. Its first quest asks for the Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade. Every other quest in the chapter unlocks after that one, either directly or through the Upgrade Base quest.[2]

How the quest chapter is laid out

  1. Start with quest "Sophisticated Storage" quest, which asks for the Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade.[2]
  2. Three quests unlock right after it. Quest "Moving Chests" quest asks for the Packing Tape, and quest a quest in "Storage" asks for the Upgrade Base. Quest "Creating Storage Networks" quest asks for the Storage Tool, the Storage Controller and the Storage Link.[2]
  3. The Upgrade Base quest leads on to three upgrade quests. Quest a quest in "Storage" accepts a Void Upgrade or an Advanced Void Upgrade.[2]
  4. Quest a quest in "Storage" accepts any one of the stack upgrades, from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 up to Stack Upgrade Tier 5, including Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus.[2]
  5. Quest a quest in "Storage" accepts a Pickup Upgrade, an Advanced Pickup Upgrade, a Magnet Upgrade or an Advanced Magnet Upgrade.[2]
Tip: The upgrade quests only need one item from their list, so hand in whichever version you can make first and the quest will complete.[2]

Unverified The sources here do not show whether the ATM Star quest path uses this mod, so check the pack's quest book for that.

How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage?

3 parts

Welcome to Sophisticated Storage in this pack! The mod's quest chapter is a good roadmap, and it tells you what to build first. Everything below follows that chapter's order, with the recipes exactly as this pack has them.[2]

Your first items, in order

  1. Start with the Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade. It is the first quest in the storage chapter ("Sophisticated Storage" quest), and the next three quests open after it.[2]
  2. Craft the Upgrade Base. Its quest opens right after the copper tier upgrade, and many of the pack's upgrade recipes use it as an ingredient. Make a few.[2][3]
  3. Make Packing Tape. It is another quest that opens straight after the copper tier upgrade.[2][3]
  4. Get the Storage Tool, the Storage Controller and the Storage Link. The chapter groups these three into one quest.[2]
  5. With the Upgrade Base in hand, work through the first upgrades the chapter points you to: a void upgrade, a stack upgrade and a pickup or magnet upgrade.[2]
Tip: The pack changed the Upgrade Base and Packing Tape recipes, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. Use the recipes shown below.[3]

Linking storage to a controller

The Storage Controller lets you deposit items into, and pipe items to and from, a connected multiblock of storages. The Storage Link connects a separate multiblock of storages to the controller, and you use the Storage Tool to do the linking. The pack adds its own recipes for both the tool and the link.[3][4]

Once your multiblock is built, the pack lets you swap between Storage Input, Storage Output and Storage I/O by crafting one into the next. The input pipes items in, the output pipes items out, and the I/O does both.[3][4]

Your first upgrades

After the Upgrade Base, the chapter branches into three upgrade quests. Each one accepts several items, so the basic version is enough to complete it.[2]

How does Sophisticated Storage work?

7 parts

Sophisticated Storage is mostly about two things: linking storage blocks into one big network, and bolting upgrades onto them. This section covers the multiblock pieces, item automation, processing tabs, fluids and experience through upgrades, and a few pack-specific settings.[4]

Storage multiblocks

The controller lets you deposit items into, and pipe items to and from, a connected multiblock of storages. Think of it as the single front door for a whole wall of chests and barrels.[4]

  • Storage Connector: bridges gaps between storage blocks in a multiblock, so your storages don't have to touch.[4]
  • Storage Link: connects a separate multiblock of storages to a controller. You use the Storage Tool to link it.[4]
  • Storage Input: when placed in a multiblock, it lets you pipe items into it. The tooltip says it is optimized for low TPS impact.[4]
  • Storage Output: when placed in a multiblock, it lets you pipe items out of it.[4]
  • Storage I/O: when placed in a multiblock, it lets you pipe items both to and from it.[4]

The Storage Tool links, locks, and hides counts, tiers, locks and overlays on storages. You switch its mode with a keybind that the tooltip shows in game.[4]

If you placed the wrong one of the three, you don't need to rebuild anything. The pack has shapeless recipes that turn each one into the next, and it changed all three of them.[3]

Item automation with upgrades

The Hopper Upgrade pulls items from the block on top and/or pushes them to the block below. The Advanced Hopper Upgrade moves items between the storage and adjacent blocks, is faster, and has configurable input and output from any side.[4]

In this pack the advanced hopper does one transfer every 2 ticks (server.advancedHopperUpgrade.transferSpeedTicks) and its maximum stack size per transfer is 4 (server.advancedHopperUpgrade.maxTransferStackSize). It has 4 input filter slots (server.advancedHopperUpgrade.inputFilterSlots) and 4 output filter slots (server.advancedHopperUpgrade.outputFilterSlots). All of these match the mod defaults, so the pack hasn't changed them.[5]

Collecting and voiding items

Watch out: A void upgrade destroys whatever matches its filter, so double-check the filter before you leave it running on a storage that holds valuable items.[4]

Processing inside the storage

Several upgrades add a workstation as a tab on the storage. These include the Crafting Upgrade, Stonecutter, Smelting, Smoking, and Blasting Upgrade. The Auto Smelting, Auto Smoking and Auto Blasting versions also automatically pull and push items.[4]

In this pack, the auto blasting and auto smelting upgrades both keep their speed multiplier at 1, which equals vanilla furnace speed, and their fuel efficiency multiplier at 1. You can see those values in server.autoBlastingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier, server.autoBlastingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier, server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.smeltingSpeedMultiplier and server.autoSmeltingUpgrade.fuelEfficiencyMultiplier. The mod allows a range of 0.25 to 4.0 for these multipliers.[5]

The Feeding upgrade feeds you with food from the storage's inventory, and the advanced version gives more options for when food gets fed to you. The Alchemy Upgrade automatically uses potions, food with effects, or milk buckets.[4]

Fluids and experience

The Pump Upgrade pumps fluids between a Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The advanced version also works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and lets you filter which fluids are pumped. The XP Pump Upgrade pumps experience between a Tank upgrade and the player.[4]

Capacity and tiers

Stack upgrades multiply how many stacks fit in a slot, and the multiplier grows with each tier. Tier 1 gives ×2, Tier 1 Plus ×3, Tier 2 ×4, Tier 3 ×8, Tier 4 ×16 and Tier 5 ×32. The Omega tier multiplies by the maximum value, ×33,554,431. Stack downgrades go the other way and divide by 8, 16 or 32.[4]

Tier upgrades change the storage block itself. Each one is a separate item for a specific starting and ending tier, such as Copper to Iron Tier Upgrade or Iron to Diamond Tier Upgrade. The pack changed these recipes, and the later steps build on the earlier ones. For example, the copper to diamond upgrade is made from the copper to gold upgrade.[3]

Breaking storages and keeping contents

The pack sets common.dropPacked to false. That means chests and barrels are not always dropped as packed, with their contents, when broken. If this option were true, packing tape would be disabled, as its tooltip says.[4][6]

The Infinity Upgrade makes all items in a storage infinite. Only admins can set infinite items and break such a storage. The Survival Infinity Upgrade lets all players do both.[4]

How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage?

6 parts

In this pack, Sophisticated Storage progression is driven by the logistics storage quest chapter and by recipes the pack has rewritten. The chapter is short: one entry quest unlocks three branches, and one of those branches unlocks three more. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so this guide refers to them by ID.[2][3]

The quest path

  1. Start with "Sophisticated Storage" quest, which asks you to obtain the Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade. Every other quest in the chapter comes after this one.[2]
  2. Three quests unlock next. "Moving Chests" quest asks for Packing Tape. a quest in "Storage" asks for the Upgrade Base. "Creating Storage Networks" quest asks for the Storage Tool, the Storage Controller and the Storage Link.[2]
  3. Finishing the Upgrade Base quest unlocks three more. a quest in "Storage" takes a Void Upgrade or an Advanced Void Upgrade. a quest in "Storage" takes any stack upgrade from Stack Upgrade Tier 1 up to Stack Upgrade Tier 5. a quest in "Storage" takes a pickup or magnet upgrade, basic or advanced.[2]

Early crafting: the Upgrade Base

The Upgrade Base is the gateway item. The pack changed its recipe, and most upgrade recipes in the pack use it as an ingredient. Make it before you chase the branch quests.[3]

Advanced upgrades

The advanced versions are upgrades of the basic ones. In the pack, the Advanced Pickup Upgrade takes the Pickup Upgrade as an input, the Advanced Void Upgrade takes the Void Upgrade, and the Advanced Magnet Upgrade builds on the Advanced Pickup Upgrade. Each of these recipes is marked as changed by the pack.[3]

How does Sophisticated Storage work with other mods?

1 part

Sophisticated Storage has very few direct links to other mods in this pack. The one connection the in-pack recipes confirm is a custom machine recipe, added by the pack, that involves the Storage Controller. It also draws on Deposit Upgrade from Sophisticated Backpacks, plus Steel Plate and Diamond.[3]

Added by the pack

Custom Machine (custommachinery)

Recipe id: ftb:world_engine/sophisticatedstorage_controller

This is a custom machine recipe added by the pack, so it is not part of the mod's default setup.

What the quests cover

The pack's storage quest chapter only asks for Sophisticated Storage items. It starts with "Sophisticated Storage" quest, which asks for the Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade. Three quests follow it: "Moving Chests" quest for Packing Tape, a quest in "Storage" for Upgrade Base, and "Creating Storage Networks" quest for the Storage Tool, the Storage Controller and the Storage Link.[2]

Three more quests come after the Upgrade Base quest: a quest in "Storage" for the void upgrades, a quest in "Storage" for the stack upgrades, and a quest in "Storage" for the pickup and magnet upgrades. None of these quests ask for items from another mod, so the quest book shows no further integrations.[2]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Sophisticated Storage?

4 parts

In this pack, Sophisticated Storage shows up in one quest chapter, the Logistics storage chapter. It has seven quests, all with item tasks. None of them have titles, so each one is referenced by its quest ref below.[2]

Where the chapter starts

Everything begins with quest "Sophisticated Storage" quest, which asks for the Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade. The other six quests come after it, directly or through another quest.[2]

First branch: three quests after the starter

Three quests list the first quest as their prerequisite.[2]

Second branch: upgrades after the Upgrade Base

Three more quests come after the Upgrade Base quest, a quest in "Storage". Their tasks accept any one of the listed items.[2]

Tip: Since each of those three quests takes any one item from its list, the basic version of each upgrade is enough for the task. The advanced versions are listed as alternatives, not requirements.[2]

Suggested order

  1. Start with "Sophisticated Storage" quest.[2]
  2. Do a quest in "Storage" next, because the three upgrade quests depend on it.[2]
  3. Then clear a quest in "Storage", a quest in "Storage" and a quest in "Storage" in whatever order suits you.[2]
  4. Pick up "Moving Chests" quest and "Creating Storage Networks" quest at any point after the first quest.[2]

Which Sophisticated Storage config options matter?

5 parts

Here's what you'll actually want to know about Sophisticated Storage's configs in this pack. The server file lists a mod default next to nearly every number, and for everything I cover below that has one, the pack's value matches that default. So the numeric settings here are stock Sophisticated Storage. The pack's own choices show up in a few toggles and lists.[5]

Breaking storage and packing tape

common.dropPacked is set to false in this pack. That means chests and barrels are not automatically dropped as packed with their contents when you break them, and you need packing tape for that.[6]

There's also a safety net. server.tooManyItemEntityDrops is 200. If breaking a chest or barrel would drop more item entities than that, the break is canceled unless you hold shift, and a message tells you to use packing tape instead.[5]

Slots and upgrade slots per tier

Barrels, chests and shulker boxes share the same slot counts per tier. Each tier has an inventorySlotCount and an upgradeSlotCount option, for example server.IronChest.inventorySlotCount and server.IronChest.upgradeSlotCount. In this pack they are:[5]

  • Basic shulker box: 27 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot.[5]
  • Copper: 45 inventory slots and 1 upgrade slot.[5]
  • Iron: 54 inventory slots and 2 upgrade slots.[5]
  • Gold: 81 inventory slots and 3 upgrade slots.[5]
  • Diamond: 108 inventory slots and 4 upgrade slots.[5]
  • Netherite: 132 inventory slots and 5 upgrade slots.[5]

Upgrade limits and behavior

server.maxUpgradesPerStorage caps how many upgrades of a type each storage can hold. Barrels, chests and shulker boxes allow 1 jukebox upgrade, 1 furnace upgrade and 2 stack upgrades. Limited barrels allow 1 furnace upgrade and 1 jukebox upgrade.[5]

server.stackUpgrade.nonStackableItems lists items that won't stack even with a stack upgrade installed. In this pack that's bundles and every color of shulker box.[5]

server.advancedVoidUpgrade.voidAlwaysEnabled is true, so the void upgrade allows voiding at all times rather than only having overflow options.[5]

Magnet range is 3 blocks for server.magnetUpgrade.magnetRange and 5 for server.advancedMagnetUpgrade.magnetRange. The storage controller connects blocks within server.controllerRange, which is 15 blocks.[5]

Shulker boxes and limited barrels

server.shulkerBoxDisallowedItems.containerItemsDisallowed is false, and server.shulkerBoxDisallowedItems.disallowedItems is empty. server.limitedBarrelCountDyeingEnabled is true, so you can dye the count on limited barrels.[5]

Client-side lists

Two client options keep JEI and the creative tab tidy. client.showSingleWoodVariantOnly is true, so only one wood variant of each storage tier is shown. client.showHigherTierGenericWoodVariants is false, so generic wood variants for copper and higher tiers are hidden.[7]

Unverified The server config file has 7 more options that weren't shown to me, so they aren't covered here. For the toggles and lists above that don't show a mod default, I can't tell whether the pack changed them from the mod's defaults.
