What is YUNG's Better Mineshafts?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.2 guide

YUNG's Better Mineshafts is a worldgen overhaul of the vanilla abandoned mineshaft. Instead of the usual boring straight lines, you get dynamic, varied webs of tunnels to explore.[1]

The mod adds 13 biome variants, including a rare mushroom mineshaft. Loot is tucked away in the corners of abandoned workstations, or sits out in the open in a chest on a minecart.[1]

What you can find

  • Abandoned workstations (common).[1]
  • Workstation cellars (less common).[1]
  • Abandoned miners' outposts (rare).[1]
  • Surface openings (very rare).[1]
  • Ore deposits at the end of some tunnels with coal, iron, redstone, gold, lapis, emerald, and (very rarely) diamond.[1]

In this pack

The pack ships YUNG's Better Mineshafts 1.21.1-NeoForge-5.1.1, and it has been part of the pack since version 1.0 or earlier.[2]

The mod is intended to be fully compatible with every worldgen mod, and its project page names YUNG's Better Strongholds, YUNG's Better Dungeons, YUNG's Extras and YUNG's Bridges as examples. Whether those are also in this pack is not covered here.[1]

How do you get started with YUNG's Better Mineshafts?

1 part

YUNG's Better Mineshafts is a world generation mod, so there is nothing to craft to get started. You just go underground and find the mineshafts. It overhauls vanilla abandoned mineshafts, turning boring straight lines into varied webs of tunnels.[1]

The sources I have show no recipes for this mod in the pack, so there are no recipe blocks here. Your first steps are about knowing what to look for.[1]

Your first mineshaft run

  1. Find a mineshaft. The mod comes in 13 biome variants, including a rare mushroom mineshaft, so they can look quite different depending on where you are.[1]
  2. Check the abandoned workstations. Loot is tucked away in their corners, and workstation cellars (less common) can sit below the workstations along the main shaft.[1][3]
  3. Look for minecarts holding chests. Loot is also out in the open in a chest on a minecart, in both the main shaft and the small shafts.[1][3]
  4. Follow the tunnels to their ends. Some end in ore deposits with coal, iron, redstone, gold, lapis, emerald and, very rarely, diamond. A deposit can also be cobblestone only.[1][3]
  5. Keep an eye out for rarer finds. Abandoned miners' outposts are rare and can appear at the end of a small mineshaft tunnel, and surface openings are very rare.[1][3]
Watch out: The mod can place minecarts holding TNT in both the main shaft and the small shafts, so look before you grab loot or start mining nearby.[3]

The mod has settings for how deep mineshaft floors can generate, how often decorations such as cobwebs, lanterns and torches appear, and whether vanilla mineshafts are disabled. It also lets the ore deposit chances be tuned.[3]

Unverified The sources here do not show the pack's actual values for these mineshaft settings, and they show no quests or config files for the mod in this pack. If you want exact depths or spawn rates, check the in-game mod config screen.

How does YUNG's Better Mineshafts work?

4 parts

YUNG's Better Mineshafts has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids. It is a world generation mod, so its core mechanics are about how mineshafts appear in the world and what you find inside them. It replaces the vanilla straight-line mineshaft with a varied web of tunnels.[1]

What a mineshaft contains

The mod's project page lists the parts you can run into. Loot sits in the corners of abandoned workstations, or out in the open in a chest on a minecart.[1]

  • 13 biome variants, including a rare mushroom mineshaft.[1]
  • Abandoned workstations (common) and workstation cellars (less common).[1]
  • Ore deposits at the end of some tunnels: coal, iron, redstone, gold, lapis, emerald and, very rarely, diamond.[1]
  • Abandoned miners' outposts (rare) and surface openings (very rare).[1]

The mod's language file adds a few more details about the layout. Small shafts are tunnels that branch off the main shaft, and their size depends on how many pieces (straight, turn and so on) are chained together. Workstations are side rooms along the main shaft, and the cellars sit below them. An Abandoned Miners' Outpost can appear at the end of a small tunnel. Minecarts holding chests or TNT can appear in both the main shaft and the small shafts. Decorations include lanterns in the main shaft, torches in small shafts and cobwebs.[3]

Ore deposits are rolled by percentage. The language file describes separate chances for coal, iron, redstone, gold, lapis, emerald and diamond, plus a chance of a deposit being cobblestone only.[3]

How variants are placed

All 13 variants are grouped in one structure tag: acacia, desert, dripstone, ice, jungle, lush, mesa, mushroom, oak, overgrown, red desert, spruce and snowy spruce. In the structure set each variant has a weight of 1. The set uses random_spread placement with spacing 1, separation 0 and a frequency of 0.003.[4][5]

Biome tags decide where each variant can generate. Many entries in them are marked as not required, so they only matter when the other mod is installed.[6][7]

  • Dripstone: the dripstone caves biome. Lush: the lush caves biome.[8][9]
  • Desert: the desert biome, with optional entries including Terralith's lush desert.[7]
  • Acacia: savanna and savanna plateau, plus optional entries including the Terralith biomes arid highlands, hot shrubland, sakura grove and sakura valley.[6]
  • Mushroom: the mushroom fields biome, plus optional tag and mod entries.[10]
  • Ice: ice spikes and frozen peaks, plus optional icy biome tags.[11]
  • Snowy spruce: snowy taiga, snowy plains, snowy slopes and jagged peaks, plus optional Terralith biomes such as cold shrubland, rocky shrubland and wintry forest.[12]
  • Oak: plains, sunflower plains, swamp and meadow, plus optional entries including the Terralith brushland.[13]
  • Jungle, mesa, overgrown (forests) and spruce (taiga) use biome tags, plus optional modded biomes. Red desert also uses the badlands tag.[14][15][16][17][18]
Tip: The mushroom mineshaft is the rare one. It generates in the mushroom fields biome, so that is where to look for it.[1][10]

How variants differ

Each variant's structure file sets its blocks and decoration chances. The acacia variant generates in the underground structures step. It is built from Acacia Planks with acacia fences and slabs, and it has a replacementRate of 0.6 and the edge leg variant. Its vine chance and gravel pile chance are both 0.1, and its snow, cactus, dead bush and mushroom chances are all 0. In its main block mix, cobblestone, stone bricks, mossy stone bricks and cracked stone bricks each have a 0.1 probability, and cave air has 0.2.[19]

The ice variant also generates in the underground structures step. It is built mainly from Packed Ice, has a replacementRate of 0.95 and uses the inner leg variant. Its gravel is replaced by Snow Block, and its trapdoors are spruce. In its main block mix, snow block has a 0.1 probability, Blue Ice has 0.4 and cave air has 0.1. The sources here do not spell out what replacementRate or the leg variants do.[20]

Compatibility

The project page says the mod is intended to be fully compatible with every worldgen mod, and names YUNG's Better Strongholds, YUNG's Better Dungeons, YUNG's Extras and YUNG's Bridges.[1]

Unverified The mod's language file describes settings for spawn rates, ore chances, the lowest and highest floor height of a mineshaft, and an option to disable vanilla mineshafts. The sources here include no config file for this mod in the pack, so the pack's actual values for these settings are not shown. The data files for the desert, dripstone, jungle, lush, mesa, mushroom, oak and overgrown variants (and a few more) were also not included, so their exact block mixes are unverified.

How do you progress through YUNG's Better Mineshafts?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.2 guide

The biome tag files show which mineshaft variant can generate where, so the variant you find depends on where you explore. For example, the oak variant is tied to plains-type biomes, and the dripstone variant to dripstone caves.[21][22]

Surface biome variants

  • Oak: plains, sunflower plains, swamp and meadow.[21]
  • Overgrown: forest biomes, including the vanilla forest group.[23]
  • Spruce: taiga biomes.[24]
  • Spruce snowy: snowy taiga, snowy plains, snowy slopes and jagged peaks.[25]
  • Acacia: savanna and savanna plateau.[26]
  • Jungle: the vanilla jungle biome group.[27]
  • Desert: the desert biome.[28]
  • Red desert and mesa: the biome lists for both variants include the vanilla badlands group.[29][30]
  • Ice: ice spikes and frozen peaks.[31]
  • Mushroom: mushroom fields.[32]

Cave biome variants

  • Dripstone: dripstone caves.[22]
  • Lush: lush caves.[33]

Several of these biome lists also include optional entries from other worldgen mods, such as Terralith, Biomes O' Plenty, BYG and Project Vibrant Journeys. Those entries are marked as not required. For example, the acacia list adds Terralith's arid highlands and sakura grove, and the overgrown list adds Biomes O' Plenty's woodland.[23][26]

Tip: Want a specific variant? Head for its biome. Try the badlands for the red desert and mesa lists, or the dripstone caves and lush caves for the cave variants.[22][29][30][33]

Unverified How each variant's structure is built, such as its layout, is set in the structure data files under data/bettermineshafts/worldgen/structure, and the sources here do not show those files.

What changed in YUNG's Better Mineshafts between versions?

1 part

FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 ships YUNG's Better Mineshafts at version 26.1.2-NeoForge-6.1.1. The mod was already in the pack in 1.0.2 or earlier, so it is not a new addition in this release.[34]

What changed in 6.1.1

The mod's own changelog for 6.1.1 lists three changes:[35]

  • Replacement of vanilla structures is improved in the /locate command, and in mods such as Explorer's Compass. If you hunt for mineshafts with either, this is the change you are most likely to notice.[35]
  • An unsafe call to ServiceLoader#load is fixed.[35]
  • The mixin refmap is removed, which reduces log spam.[35]

Unverified The pack changelogs are not shown in the sources here for this mod, so any pack-level changes to YUNG's Better Mineshafts between releases are unverified.
