What is Terralith?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mons 1.3.0 guide

Terralith is a world generation mod. It takes Minecraft's 1.18 terrain overhaul and pushes it much further, adding over 95 brand new biomes and updating almost every vanilla biome. You also get new terrain types like canyons, shattered biomes, floating islands and deep ocean trenches. It does all this using just vanilla blocks.[1]

If you love exploring, building on interesting landscapes, or just want a world that looks great, this one is for you. The pack ships Terralith 2.6.2, so everything below about the mod version of 2.6.0 and later applies here.[1][2]

What you will find

  • Realistic biomes, such as Yellowstone, Yosemite Cliffs, Shield, Volcanic Peaks and Desert Oases, plus flat Highlands that are great for building.[1]
  • Fantasy biomes, such as Moonlight Grove, Amethyst Rainforest, Scarlet Mountains, Mirage Isles and Alpha Islands.[1]
  • Custom caves, including Underground Jungle, Infested Caves, Fungal Caves and the dangerous Frostfire Caves, which you only reach by digging very deep.[1]
  • Structures like the tall Spire in the iciest biomes, rare Fortified Villages in plains and desert, and the Glacial Hut.[1]

Config

Since 2.6.0 the mod version has a config file called terralith.json, which you can also edit in game through the mod menu. It has toggles for Custom Structures, Fog Tweaks, Intro Message, Skylands, Terrain Slabs, Vanilla Stone Generation and Recipe Changes. The mod defaults are everything on except Vanilla Stone Generation and Recipe Changes. I can't confirm from the sources whether the pack changes any of these values.[1]

The mod also adds two world types: Amplified + Large Biomes and Oops! All Skylands, a void world filled only with Skylands.[1]

Watch out: You cannot remove Terralith from an existing world. Adding it to an existing world is not recommended either, so reset your world or start a new one.[1]

Unverified Where Terralith fits in the pack's progression is not confirmed by the sources. There is no in-jar guidebook to check, and nothing here ties the mod to quests or to the ATM Star path.

How do you get started with Terralith?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

Terralith is a world generation mod, so there's no first tool or crafting chain to rush. Your first steps are about where you play and what you go looking for. It adds over 95 brand new biomes and updates almost every vanilla biome, all using vanilla blocks.[1]

Your first steps, in order

  1. Start in a fresh world. Terralith can't be removed from an existing world, and adding it to one is not recommended. Reset or make a new world instead.[1]
  2. Watch for the toast when the world is created. It's an optional intro message that gives a Discord link and warns about problems when uninstalling the mod.[3]
  3. Look around the surface before you dig in. The terrain is overhauled, with new types such as canyons, shattered biomes, floating islands and deep ocean trenches.[1]
  4. Scout for structures to loot and explore. Fortified Villages show up rarely in plains and desert, Spires pierce the sky in the iciest biomes, and Glacial Huts can shelter you if you get caught out cold and hungry at night.[1]
  5. Take your time before going deep. Custom caves like the Underground Jungle, Infested Caves and Fungal Caves sit beneath the surface, and the dangerous Frostfire Caves are found if you dig very deep.[1]
Watch out: You can't take Terralith out of a world once it's in. Treat any world you make in this pack as permanent.[1]

Things you might notice early

  • Stone slabs can generate on the surface in biomes with surface stone, smoothing out the terrain.[3]
  • Fog distance and color change in some biomes, such as swamps and caves.[3]
  • Skylands are a set of four season-themed biomes that generate as sky islands above deep oceans.[3]
  • Custom structures, such as Fortified Villages and Mage Towers, can spawn.[3]
  • The mod has a recipe option that lets some items normally crafted with cobblestone use alternate stones, and adds a recipe for turning stone slabs back into cobblestone.[3]
Tip: Terralith's biomes and structures can be viewed per seed with the Minecraft Datapack Map made by jacobsjo, which is handy for planning where to explore.[1]

Unverified I couldn't confirm which of Terralith's options are enabled or changed in this pack, including the cobblestone recipe changes. The pack has no quests or crafting recipes for this mod, so there are no recipe steps to follow here.

How does Terralith work?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.10.0-beta guide

Terralith is a world generation mod, so its core mechanics are about how your world is built rather than about machines, power or automation. It adds over 95 new biomes, reworks almost every vanilla biome, and builds everything out of vanilla blocks. The sources for this pack describe biomes, caves, structures and config switches, and that is what this section covers.[1]

Terrain and biomes

Besides new biomes, you get new terrain types: canyons, shattered biomes, floating islands and deep ocean trenches. The biomes range from realistic ones like Yellowstone, Yosemite Cliffs and Shield to fantasy ones like Moonlight Grove, Amethyst Rainforest and Scarlet Mountains.[1]

The rare ocean finds are tagged together as rare islands: Alpha Islands, Alpha Islands (Winter), Mirage Isles and Warped Mesa. Skylands are a separate set of four season-themed biomes (Autumn, Spring, Summer and Winter) that generate as sky islands above deep oceans.[3][4]

Caves

Terralith gives the underground its own biomes. The cave tag covers Andesite, Deep, Diorite, Frostfire, Fungal, Granite, Infested, Mantle, Thermal and Tuff Caves, plus the Underground Jungle. Deep Caves, Frostfire Caves, Mantle Caves and Tuff Caves are grouped as the deep cave set.[5][6]

The Underground Jungle is full of foliage, like a Lush Cave, and rarely has old abandoned houses. Infested and Fungal Caves are overgrown with spiders and fungi. Dig very deep and you may find the Frostfire Caves, described as a sister to the Deep Dark and dangerous.[1]

The mod's default replaces vanilla's small granite, andesite and diorite blobs with a dedicated cave biome for each stone type. The Vanilla Stone Generation option brings the vanilla blobs back and is off by default.[1]

Where structures generate

Terralith structures are tied to biome tags, so the biome you are standing in tells you what you can find. These are the placements the sources list:[7]

  • Fortified Village: plains, sunflower plains, meadow, Temperate Highlands, Forested Highlands, Alpine Highlands and Brushland.[7]
  • Fortified Desert Village and Desert Outpost: desert, Desert Oasis and Lush Desert.[8][9]
  • Mage Tower: Moonlight Valley, Lavender Valley, Amethyst Canyon and Mirage Isles.[10]
  • Mage Complex: Moonlight Grove, Lavender Forest and Amethyst Rainforest.[11]
  • Mining Outpost: Deep Caves. Old Refinery: Fungal Caves, Infested Caves and Deep Caves.[12][13]
  • Frosted Dungeon: Frostfire Caves.[14]
  • Witch Hut: Orchid Swamp, Ice Marsh and swamp.[15]
  • Valley Lodge: Valley Clearing and Shield Clearing.[16]
  • Igloo: Snowy Cherry Grove only.[17]
  • Spire: frozen river.[18]
  • Giant Bee Hive and Sunken Tower: Lush Caves and Underground Jungle. Oak Cabin: Lush Caves.[19][20][21]

Config options

The mod version has a config with these options: Custom Structures, Fog Tweaks, Intro Message, Skylands, Terrain Slabs, Vanilla Stone Generation and Recipe Changes. The defaults below are the mod's own. Custom Structures, Fog Tweaks, Intro Message, Skylands and Terrain Slabs are on by default. Vanilla Stone Generation and Recipe Changes are off by default.[1][3]

  • Custom Structures spawns structures such as Fortified Villages and Mage Towers.[3]
  • Fog Tweaks changes fog distance and color in some biomes, such as swamps and caves.[3]
  • Skylands controls the four sky island biomes. Disabling it prevents them from generating.[1]
  • Terrain Slabs generates stone slabs in biomes with surface stone to smooth the terrain. Disabling it prevents them from generating.[1]
  • Recipe Changes lets some cobblestone items be crafted with alternate stones and adds a recipe that turns stone slabs into cobblestone.[3]
  • Intro Message shows a toast when you create a new world, with a discord link and a warning about uninstalling.[3]

Generation options take effect in newly loaded chunks.[3]

Unverified Whether this pack changes any of the Terralith config options is not shown in the sources here. If it does, it would be set in the terralith.json config file, and the defaults above are the mod's own.

Watch out: You cannot remove Terralith from an existing world, and adding it to an existing world is not recommended. Start a new world or reset yours first.[1]

How do you progress through Terralith?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.10.0-beta guide

Unverified The sources here show no quests and no crafting tiers for Terralith, so there is no quest-by-quest or tier-by-tier path to lay out. If you want to see whether the quest book mentions it, check the quest book in-game.

What the sources do show: structure loot

What I can confirm for Terralith is the loot its structures hand out, which you can treat as small early-game boosts while exploring. Here are three loot tables.[22][23][24]

Igloo loot

The igloo table has one guaranteed pool: a Cherry Sapling renamed "Wintry Cherry Sapling", with an enchantment glint and a lore line. It has a second pool that rolls 3 to 5 times.[22]

  • Snowballs: 4 to 8[22]
  • Cherry saplings: 2 to 4[22]
  • Baked potatoes: 4 to 12[22]
  • Sweet berries: 6 to 12[22]
  • Cherry logs: 4 to 12[22]
  • Emeralds, amethyst shards and lapis lazuli: 4 to 8 each[22]
  • A writable book, with a weight of 1[22]

Mage extras loot

The mage extras table rolls 3 to 4 times. Each roll picks from small common flowers (a nested loot table, weight 4, count 2 to 5), emeralds (weight 2, count 1 to 3), amethyst shards (weight 4, count 1 to 4) and bread (weight 5, count 2 to 6).[23]

Giant bee hive loot

The underground giant bee hive table gives you 11 to 15 honeycomb, 4 to 7 honey bottles and a roll on the Terralith royal jelly loot table. The contents of that royal jelly table are not shown in these sources.[24]

Which Terralith config options matter?

2 parts

Terralith keeps its settings in one file, and this pack ships it with a short list of module switches. Here is exactly how the pack sets them. The sources I have don't show the mod's own default for each option, so I can't tell you which of these the pack changed.[25]

Modules the pack leaves on

Modules the pack turns off

The file also carries config_version with a value of 1. That is a format marker for the file, so you don't need to touch it.[25]

Watch out: Terralith changes world generation, and its project page says you cannot remove it from an existing world. It also recommends against adding it to an existing world, so reset your world or start a new one instead.[1]

What changed in Terralith between versions?

1 part

FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 ships Terralith 2.6.1. The pack's mod list says the mod was first included in FTB Evolution 2 1.0.2 or earlier, so it has been part of the pack for a while.[26]

Terralith 2.6.1

This is the version you get in the pack right now. The mod's own changelog lists these changes:[26][27]

  • Updated to support 26.1.[27]
  • Golden Dandelion can now generate on Autumn Skylands.[27]
  • Fixed snow layers not generating under trees in some snowy biomes.[27]
  • More biomes will have their flowers appear when you bonemeal the ground.[27]
  • World height in the "Amplified + Large Biomes" world preset is increased by 64 blocks.[27]

Unverified The pack changelogs have no entries for Terralith, so the sources here do not show whether the pack changed anything about the mod between releases, or which Terralith version earlier pack releases used.
