What is Explorer's Compass?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide
Explorer's Compass is a compass that helps you find structures anywhere in the world. Instead of wandering until you stumble on a village or a modded dungeon, you tell the compass what you want and follow it.[1]
This pack includes Explorer's Compass version 1.21.1-3.4.0-neoforge.[2]
What it does
- Right-click with the compass to open a GUI where you pick a structure, or a group of structures, to search for.[1]
- Shift-right-click to reset the compass state.[1]
- Information about your current structure search is shown on the HUD.[1]
- When the compass isn't pointing at a structure, it points at the world spawn.[1]
- It supports all registered structures, both vanilla and modded, so it also works for structures added by the other mods in the pack.[1]
Who it's for
It's for anyone who wants to find structures without long blind exploring: loot hunters, players tracking down a specific structure, and anyone who wants to head straight to something that modded worldgen has added. If you want to find biomes instead, the mod's author points to a separate mod, Nature's Compass.[1]
Unverified The crafting recipe, the pack's config values and where the compass fits into this pack's progression could not be confirmed from the available sources, so check the in-game recipe viewer for the exact recipe. This site does hold FTB Evolution 2's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
How do you get started with Explorer's Compass?
4 parts
The first thing to make in this pack is the Explorer's Compass from Explorer's Compass. It locates structures anywhere in the world, both vanilla and modded, so it saves you a lot of aimless wandering when you want a village, a temple or a modded dungeon.[1][3]
Step 1: Craft the compass
The pack changed this crafting recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's own page. The block below shows the exact recipe used here.[4]
Crafting Shaped
| Amethyst Shard | Ender Eye | Amethyst Shard |
| Ender Eye | Compass | Ender Eye |
| Amethyst Shard | Ender Eye | Amethyst Shard |
Recipe id: explorerscompass:explorers_compass
This is the pack's changed shaped recipe for the compass.
Step 2: Pick a structure
- Right-click with the compass to open a GUI where you select a structure, or a group of structures, to search for.[1]
- Once a structure is located, details about the search show on your HUD. In this pack the precise coordinates and distance are shown, because General.displayCoordinates is true.[1][5]
- Shift-right-click to reset the compass state when you want to start a new search.[1]
- If the compass isn't pointing at a structure, it points at the world spawn.[1]
What searching costs in this pack
Searches cost no XP levels here, since General.defaultXpLevels is 0 and General.perStructureXpLevels is empty. The cost can go up to 3 levels if it is changed.[5]
Durability is also off. General.compassDurability is 0, which disables it, so the compass won't break after a number of searches. There is a repair recipe in the mod, but you only need it if durability gets turned on.[4][5]
Crafting Shapeless
Explorer's Compass
- Compass
Recipe id: explorerscompass:repair_explorers_compass
The mod's repair recipe, only relevant if durability is enabled.
Search limits
- General.maxRadius is 10,000, the largest radius searched for a structure. This matches the mod default.[5]
- General.maxSamples is 100,000, the most samples taken in one search. This also matches the mod default.[5]
- General.maxNextSearches is 100, how many times you can search for the next instance of an already located structure.[5]
- General.structureBlacklist is empty, so no structures are hidden from the GUI.[5]
How does Explorer's Compass work?
5 parts
Explorer's Compass is built around a single item, the Explorer's Compass, which locates structures anywhere in the world. If you want to find biomes instead, the mod's own page points you to Nature's Compass.[1][3]
Using the compass
- Right-click with the compass to open a GUI where you pick a structure, or a group of structures, to search for.[1]
- Information about the search shows up on the HUD.[1]
- Shift-right-click to reset the compass state.[1]
- When the compass is not pointing at a structure, it points at the world spawn instead.[1]
It supports all registered structures, vanilla and modded, so structures added by other mods in the pack show up too.[1]
Search limits in this pack
The search is controlled by the values below in the mod's common config file. The pack keeps each of them at the mod default.[5]
- General.maxRadius is 10,000 (allowed range 0 to 1,000,000). It is the maximum radius searched for a structure. Raising it increases search accuracy but can make the process more resource intensive.[5]
- General.maxSamples is 100,000 (allowed range 0 to 100,000,000). It is the maximum number of samples taken when searching for a structure.[5]
- General.maxNextSearches is 100 (allowed range 0 to 10,000). It is how many times you can search for the next instance of a located structure, excluding locations you already found. At 0 that is disabled and the compass always locates the nearest instance.[5]
HUD and teleporting
General.displayCoordinates is true in this pack. That lets you see the precise coordinates and distance of a located structure on the HUD, instead of relying only on the direction the compass points.[5]
General.allowTeleport is also true. It allows teleporting to a located structure, but only when you are in creative mode, opped, or in cheat mode.[5]
Costs, blacklist and durability
General.defaultXpLevels is 0 (allowed range 0 to 3), so a search does not consume XP levels by default. General.perStructureXpLevels is empty in the pack. If filled in, it overrides the default for matching structures with comma-separated "structure_id,num_levels" pairs, up to 3 levels, and supports * and ? wildcards.[5]
General.structureBlacklist is empty too. Anything listed there is hidden from the GUI and cannot be searched for, and it accepts the same wildcards.[5]
General.compassDurability is 0, which disables durability, so the compass does not break after a number of successful searches.[5]

How do you progress through Explorer's Compass?
3 parts
Good news and a short section: Explorer's Compass doesn't have a ladder of tiers in this pack. The recipe data shows a single item, the Explorer's Compass, and two ways to get it.[4]
Crafting it
The pack changes the crafting recipe for the compass, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. The block below shows the exact in-pack recipe.[4]

Repairing it
There is also a shapeless repair recipe for the compass. It comes from the mod itself and the pack doesn't change it.[4]

What the pack does when you carry one
The pack runs a script that checks your inventory about once a second (every 20 ticks). If you carry an Explorer's Compass, you are granted the stage ftb:wayfarer_wares. The same stage is granted for several other travel items, including the Nature's Compass from Nature's Compass, the warp stone and scroll items from Waystones, and the paraglider from Paragliders. You only need one of them.[6]
Getting a stage like this also grants an advancement called open_for_business. The script runs the same way for every wares stage it hands out. The sources here don't say what the wayfarer wares contain.[6]
Which Explorer's Compass config options matter?
3 parts
Good news: Explorer's Compass runs on almost untouched settings in this pack. Every option that lists a mod default in the pack's config file is set to that default, so nothing here has been changed. Here are the options you are most likely to care about, and exactly how the pack sets them. They all live in General.maxRadius's file, config/explorerscompass-common.toml, under the General section.[5]
Search range and cost
- General.maxRadius is 10,000 in this pack, the same as the mod default. It is the maximum radius searched for a structure. Raising it increases search accuracy but can make the process more resource intensive. The allowed range is 0 to 1,000,000.[5]
- General.maxSamples is 100,000, also the mod default. This is the maximum number of samples taken when searching for a structure, and it can go up to 100,000,000.[5]
- General.maxNextSearches is 100, the mod default. It caps how many times you can search for the next instance of a located structure, not counting locations you already found. Setting it to 0 turns that off, so the compass always finds the nearest instance.[5]
Durability and XP
- General.compassDurability is 0, the mod default, which means durability is disabled. Your compass will not break after a number of successful searches. If you raise it (up to 10,000), it becomes the number of successful searches before the compass breaks and needs repairing.[5]
- General.defaultXpLevels is 0, the mod default, so searching for a structure costs no XP levels. The allowed range is 0 to 3.[5]
- General.perStructureXpLevels is an empty list in this pack. If you fill it, it overrides the default XP cost for specific structures using "structure_id,num_levels" pairs, with a maximum of 3 levels. Wildcards work: * matches any number of characters and ? matches one.[5]
HUD, teleporting and blacklist
- General.displayCoordinates is true. Players can see the precise coordinates and distance of a located structure on the HUD, instead of relying only on the direction the compass points.[5]
- General.allowTeleport is true. This lets a player teleport to a located structure when in creative mode, opped, or in cheat mode.[5]
- General.structureBlacklist is an empty list, so no structures are hidden. Anything you add is removed from the compass GUI and can no longer be searched for. Wildcards work here too.[5]
What changed in Explorer's Compass between versions?
1 part
FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 ships Explorer's Compass version 26.1-3.3.0-neoforge. The pack's mod list shows it was already included in 1.0.2 or earlier, so it did not arrive with 1.1.0.[7]
Changes in 26.1-3.3.0
This is the mod's own changelog for the version the pack uses. It is the only release history the sources here cover.[7][8]
- Updated to NeoForge 26.1.[8]
- Added a config option to give the compass durability, plus a recipe to repair a broken compass.[8]
- Fixed the compass HUD info not rendering when any debug elements are set to always-on.[8]
- Fixed structures with the c:hidden_from_locator_selection tag not being hidden.[8]
- Added Ukranian translations.[8]
- Added Turkish translations.[8]
Unverified The sources here do not show whether the pack turns on the compass durability option, or what value it uses. Check the mod's config file in your instance to see how it is set.
