What is YUNG's Better Mineshafts?

2 parts

YUNG's Better Mineshafts is a worldgen overhaul of the vanilla abandoned mineshaft. Instead of the usual boring straight lines, you get dynamic, varied webs of tunnels to explore.[1]

The mod adds 13 biome variants, including a rare mushroom mineshaft. Loot is tucked away in the corners of abandoned workstations, or sits out in the open in a chest on a minecart.[1]

What you can find

  • Abandoned workstations (common).[1]
  • Workstation cellars (less common).[1]
  • Abandoned miners' outposts (rare).[1]
  • Surface openings (very rare).[1]
  • Ore deposits at the end of some tunnels with coal, iron, redstone, gold, lapis, emerald, and (very rarely) diamond.[1]

In this pack

The pack ships YUNG's Better Mineshafts 1.21.1-NeoForge-5.1.1, and it has been part of the pack since version 1.0 or earlier.[2]

The mod is intended to be fully compatible with every worldgen mod, and its project page names YUNG's Better Strongholds, YUNG's Better Dungeons, YUNG's Extras and YUNG's Bridges as examples. Whether those are also in this pack is not covered here.[1]

How do you get started with YUNG's Better Mineshafts?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: there's nothing to craft before you can enjoy this mod. It overhauls vanilla abandoned mineshafts, turning boring straight lines into varied webs of tunnels. Your first step is simply to go find one.[1]

Unverified No recipes or quests for this mod's items turned up in the pack data I was given, so I can't give you a first-items-to-craft list. If you find one in your world, treat it as unconfirmed.

What to look for

  • Abandoned workstations are common. Loot is tucked away in their corners.[1]
  • Chests on minecarts sit out in the open, so keep an eye on the tracks.[1][3]
  • Workstation cellars are less common and generate below workstations along the main shaft.[1][3]
  • Ore deposits sit at the end of some tunnels. They can hold coal, iron, redstone, gold, lapis and emerald, and very rarely diamond.[1]
  • Abandoned miners' outposts are rare. They can appear at the end of a small mineshaft tunnel.[1][3]
  • Surface openings are very rare, so don't count on walking into a mineshaft from above ground.[1]
Watch out: Minecarts holding TNT can generate in both the main shaft and the small shafts. Watch where you step and what you open, especially around carts on the rails.[3]

Where mineshafts generate

There are 13 biome variants, including a rare mushroom mineshaft, so the look of the tunnels changes with where you are.[1]

The mod's config sets the lowest and highest height for a mineshaft floor, and it also has an option to disable vanilla mineshafts. I couldn't confirm this pack's values for any of these settings, so check the config in your own instance before you plan a mining trip.[3]

Tip: If you edit the ore deposit chances in the config, make sure all the values add up to 100. The mod warns that things won't work the way you want otherwise.[3]

How does YUNG's Better Mineshafts work?

6 parts

YUNG's Better Mineshafts is a world generation mod, so the mechanics here are about how mineshafts are chosen, where they appear and what they are built from. The mod revamps vanilla abandoned mineshafts, changing them from boring straight lines into dynamic, varied webs of tunnels.[1]

How a mineshaft gets picked

The mod adds 13 mineshaft variants, and all of them sit in one structure tag. In the structure set, every variant has the same weight of 1. The placement is a random spread with spacing 1, separation 0 and a frequency of 0.003. Which variant can actually appear in a spot depends on the biome lists below.[4][5]

Biome variants

Each variant has its own biome list. Many lists also include entries from other worldgen mods, marked as optional, so they only count if those biomes exist in your world. These are the vanilla entries:[6][7][8]

  • Acacia: savanna and savanna plateau.[6]
  • Desert: the desert biome.[7]
  • Dripstone: dripstone caves.[9]
  • Ice: ice spikes and frozen peaks.[8]
  • Jungle: the vanilla jungle biome tag.[10]
  • Lush: lush caves.[11]
  • Mesa and red desert: both use the vanilla badlands tag, so both can show up in badlands.[12][13]
  • Mushroom: mushroom fields, which makes it the rare one.[1][14]
  • Oak: plains, sunflower plains, swamp and meadow.[15]
  • Overgrown: the vanilla forest tag.[16]
  • Spruce: the vanilla taiga tag.[17]
  • Spruce snowy: snowy taiga, snowy plains, snowy slopes and jagged peaks.[18]

What is inside a mineshaft

A mineshaft has a main shaft, and smaller tunnels branch off it. The number of pieces (straight, turn and so on) in a small shaft sets how big it gets. Along the main shaft you can find workstation side rooms, and below some workstations there are cellars. Cellars are less common than the workstations themselves. Chests on minecarts can appear in both the main shaft and small shafts, and so can minecarts carrying TNT, so watch your step.[1][3]

Lighting and clutter follow the same split: lanterns go in the main shaft, torches go in small shafts, and cobwebs have their own spawn rate. At the end of a small tunnel there can be an Abandoned Miners' Outpost, which is rare. Very rare surface openings also exist.[1][3]

Ore deposits

Some tunnels end in an ore deposit. A deposit can be cobblestone only, or contain coal, iron, redstone, gold, lapis, emerald or diamond. Diamond is very rare. Each type has its own percent chance in the mod's options.[1][3]

Watch out: The ore chances are meant to add up to 100. The mod's own option text warns that things won't work the way you want if they don't.[3]

Worked example: the acacia variant

The acacia mineshaft shows how a variant is styled. It generates in the underground structures step. Its main block is acacia planks, with acacia fences for support and stripped acacia logs for the small legs. It also uses stone brick walls and slabs.[19]

Its config has a replacement rate of 0.6 and the leg variant set to edge. Vine and gravel pile decorations each have a 0.1 chance. Snow, cactus, dead bush and mushroom decorations are set to 0, and lush and dripstone decorations are off.[19]

The main block randomizer swaps planks for other blocks. Cobblestone, stone bricks, mossy stone bricks and cracked stone bricks each have a 0.1 chance, and cave air has 0.2. The floor randomizer uses the same stone blocks at 0.1 each but no cave air.[19]

Height and vanilla mineshafts

The mod has options for the lowest and highest floor of a mineshaft. It also has an option to disable vanilla mineshafts completely.[3]

Unverified The sources here show no config file for this mod in the pack, and the structure files for the other variants were too long to include. The exact spawn rates, ore percentages, height limits and whether vanilla mineshafts are disabled in this pack are therefore not shown.

How do you progress through YUNG's Better Mineshafts?

2 parts

The biome tag files show which mineshaft variant can generate where, so the variant you find depends on where you explore. For example, the oak variant is tied to plains-type biomes, and the dripstone variant to dripstone caves.[9][15]

Surface biome variants

  • Oak: plains, sunflower plains, swamp and meadow.[15]
  • Overgrown: forest biomes, including the vanilla forest group.[16]
  • Spruce: taiga biomes.[17]
  • Spruce snowy: snowy taiga, snowy plains, snowy slopes and jagged peaks.[18]
  • Acacia: savanna and savanna plateau.[6]
  • Jungle: the vanilla jungle biome group.[10]
  • Desert: the desert biome.[7]
  • Red desert and mesa: the biome lists for both variants include the vanilla badlands group.[12][13]
  • Ice: ice spikes and frozen peaks.[8]
  • Mushroom: mushroom fields.[14]

Cave biome variants

  • Dripstone: dripstone caves.[9]
  • Lush: lush caves.[11]

Several of these biome lists also include optional entries from other worldgen mods, such as Terralith, Biomes O' Plenty, BYG and Project Vibrant Journeys. Those entries are marked as not required. For example, the acacia list adds Terralith's arid highlands and sakura grove, and the overgrown list adds Biomes O' Plenty's woodland.[6][16]

Tip: Want a specific variant? Head for its biome. Try the badlands for the red desert and mesa lists, or the dripstone caves and lush caves for the cave variants.[9][11][12][13]

Unverified How each variant's structure is built, such as its layout, is set in the structure data files under data/bettermineshafts/worldgen/structure, and the sources here do not show those files.

"From pack files" means the list came from the pack's own files; "from the published release" means ForgeBase read the jars of the release itself.

Items and blocks

We can't match this mod to the pack's item list: it registers as bettermineshafts, and the pack's recipe dump has nothing under that name. That means we found nothing, not that the mod adds nothing. Search the item browser
