What is Small Ships?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0 guide

Small Ships adds sailable, medieval-inspired ships to Minecraft, built for exploration, trade and naval battles. It's designed to be vanilla friendly, and you can mount cannons on the ships to fight at sea. If you want to cross oceans in something with more character than a boat, this mod is for you.[1]

The pack ships Small Ships version 2.0.0-a2.3.1, built for Minecraft 1.18.2.[2]

The four ships

  • Cog: a cold-water medieval trade ship with 108 slots, up to 4 cannons, 5 passengers, a speed of 40 km/h and 300 HP.[1]
  • Brigg: a two-masted cold-water trade ship with 162 slots, up to 6 cannons, 11 passengers, a speed of 45 km/h and 400 HP.[1]
  • Galley: a warm-water warfare ship with 54 slots, 9 passengers, a speed of 40 km/h and 200 HP.[1]
  • Drakkar: a cold-water Viking-style ship with 54 slots, 11 passengers, an ice-breaker ability, banner-pattern shields, a speed of 30 km/h and 200 HP.[1]

Getting started

Place the ship far out in open water, because it needs space to spawn. Right-click to sit in it. While you're aboard, press R to open or close the sail, and use W and S to raise or lower the sail speed.[1]

Biome matters. Cold-water ships are 10% faster in cold biomes and 10% slower in warm ones, and warm-water ships do the opposite. Each cannon slows you by 2.5%, and cargo can cost you up to 10% of your speed.[1]

Tip: You can dye sails with a right-click, name your ship with a nametag, and repair it with iron nuggets and planks.[1]

Unverified The stats above come from the mod's project page. Nothing I was given confirms that this pack leaves them unchanged, and the pack's crafting recipes and config options for the mod aren't confirmed either. I also found no quests or progression-path entries for Small Ships, so I can't say where it fits in the pack's progression.

How do you get started with Small Ships?

2 parts

Ships in this pack are a short crafting chain: make a sail, build a ship around it, then add cannons if you want to fight. Every Small Ships recipe in the pack has been changed from the mod's defaults, so follow the recipe blocks below rather than what you remember from other packs.[3]

Step by step

  1. Craft a Sail first. Every ship recipe in the pack uses it, so nothing else can be built without it.[3]
  2. Craft your first ship. The Oak Cog is a good start. The mod page describes the Cog as a medieval trade ship for cold water with 108 slots, up to 4 cannons and 5 passengers.[1][3]
  3. Move up to a Oak Brigg or a Oak Galley when you need more. The mod page lists the Brigg as a two-masted cold-water trade ship with 162 slots and up to 6 cannons, and the Galley as a warm-water warship with 54 slots.[1][3]
  4. Make a Ship Cannon and some Cannon Ball items if you want to fight. A cannon only fires when cannonballs are in the ship's inventory.[1][3]

The Cog and the Brigg come in oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia and dark oak versions, and each wood has its own recipe. Galley items exist for oak, spruce, birch, jungle and dark oak.[3]

Watch out: In the pack's recipe listing, the Acacia Galley recipe produces an Acacia Cog, not a Galley. If you want a Galley, use one of the other wood types.[3]

Launching your ship

  • Place the ship far out in open water, because it needs space to spawn.[1]
  • Right-click to sit in it. While seated, press R to open or close the sail, and use W and S to raise or lower sail speed.[1]
  • To open the ship's inventory from outside, crouch and right-click it.[1]
  • To add a cannon, right-click the ship while holding one. Shoot with Space while looking in the cannon's direction. Remove a cannon with a pickaxe. Key-binds can be changed in the options.[1]
Tip: You can repair a damaged ship with iron nuggets and planks, color the sail by right-clicking it with dye, and name the ship with a name tag.[1]
Tip: The mod page says cold-water ships (Cog, Brigg) are 10% faster in cold biomes and 10% slower in warm ones, and warm-water ships (Galley) are the opposite. Each cannon slows the ship by 2.5%, and cargo can slow it by up to 10%.[1]

How does Small Ships work?

7 parts

Small Ships adds sailable boats with their own inventory, sail control and optional cannons. There are no machines, power or fluids here. It all comes down to how a ship handles on the water and what you load onto it. The pack changes every crafting recipe for the mod, and the pack's config values are what count here, so I'll flag where they differ from the mod's project page.[1][3][4]

Getting a ship moving

  1. Place the ship in water, well away from the shore. The mod says ships need space to spawn.[1]
  2. Right-click the ship to sit in it.[1]
  3. Press R to open or close the sail, and use W and S to raise or lower sail speed.[1]
  4. In third person (F5), use the mouse wheel to change the camera distance.[1]
  5. To open the ship's inventory from outside, crouch and right-click it.[1]

Right-clicking another entity dismounts it from the ship. You can also right-click with dye to color the sails, and use a nametag to name the ship. For repairs, the mod uses iron nuggets and planks.[1]

Ship types and stats in this pack

The pack has Cogs, Briggs and Galleys in several wood variants, for example Oak Cog, Oak Brigg and Oak Galley. Here are the pack's configured values for each type.[3][4]

Handling values

Each ship also has speed, acceleration and turning settings in the common config. Here they are one by one, starting with the Brigg.[4]

Biomes, cargo and cannons

Ships are either cold-water or warm-water types. The mod page says a ship is 10% faster in its matching biome type and 10% slower in the opposite one. In this pack the Cog and Brigg are set to cold biomes and the Galley to warm biomes (Ship.Cog.Modifier.shipModifierCogBiome, Ship.Brigg.Modifier.shipModifierBriggBiome, Ship.Galley.Modifier.shipModifierGalleyBiome).[1][4]

A full cargo hold slows you down. The pack caps that penalty at 10 percent with Ship.General.Modifier.shipGeneralContainerModifier. Each cannon you mount costs another 2.5% of speed, according to the mod page.[1][4]

Paddle ships get a speed bonus while paddling, set to 35 percent in this pack (Ship.General.Modifier.shipGeneralPaddlingModifier).[4]

To add a Ship Cannon, right-click the ship while holding one. Fire with Space while looking in the cannon's direction. This needs Cannon Ball items in the ship's inventory. A pickaxe removes a cannon. The key bindings can be changed in the options.[1]

Other pack settings

  • Collision damage is set to 7.5 (Ship.General.shipGeneralCollisionDamage).[4]
  • The item drop setting is on (Ship.General.shipGeneralDoItemDrop).[4]
  • The sail cooldown is 30 (Ship.General.shipGeneralSailCooldown). The config gives no unit for it.[4]
  • Water animal flee distance is 10 ([[config:config/smallships-common.toml#Ship.General.Fleeing Water Animals.waterAnimalFleeDistance]]).[4]
  • Water animal flee radius is 15 ([[config:config/smallships-common.toml#Ship.General.Fleeing Water Animals.waterAnimalFleeRadius]]).[4]
  • Water animal flee speed is 1.5 ([[config:config/smallships-common.toml#Ship.General.Fleeing Water Animals.waterAnimalFleeSpeed]]).[4]

Camera settings (client)

Entering a ship switches you to third person automatically (Ship.General.Camera.shipGeneralCameraAutoThirdPerson). Camera zoom is enabled, with a minimum distance of 5 and a maximum of 20 (Ship.General.Camera.Zoom.shipGeneralCameraZoomMin, Ship.General.Camera.Zoom.shipGeneralCameraZoomMax). The mod's own creative tab is turned off in the pack (General.smallshipsItemGroupEnable).[5]

How do you progress through Small Ships?

3 parts

Small Ships recipes in this pack are all marked as changed by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from the standalone mod. The order below follows the in-pack recipes: Sail first, then a ship, then the weapons.[3]

Every ship recipe in the pack needs a Sail, so make this first.[3]

Cog, Brigg or Galley

Ships come as Cog, Brigg and Galley, each in several wood variants. Oak is the example here: the Oak Cog, the Oak Brigg and the Oak Galley. The recipe blocks below show exactly what each one needs in this pack.[3]

The wood variants use the pack's own boats. Oak, Birch, Spruce and Acacia ships use the matching boat. Dark Oak ships use a Hickory boat and Jungle ships use a Palm boat. Other variants include the Birch Cog, Spruce Brigg, Jungle Galley and Dark Oak Cog.[3]

Watch out: In the recipe dump, the recipe with the id smallships:acacia_galley lists an Acacia Cog as its output, not an Acacia Galley. Keep that in mind if you are after the Acacia Galley.[3]

How does Small Ships work with other mods?

2 parts

In this pack, Small Ships connects to other mods through its crafting recipes. Every Cog, Brigg and Galley recipe in the sources is marked as changed by the pack, and each one asks for a boat from the tfc namespace instead of a vanilla boat. The wood types covered are Oak, Spruce, Birch, Acacia, Dark Oak and Jungle.[3]

Which boat goes with which ship

Each ship wood type is tied to one tfc boat. Dark Oak and Jungle ships don't use a boat of the same name, so watch those two.[3]

Tip: Check the boat before you start collecting materials. If you want a Dark Oak ship you need a Hickory Boat, and for a Jungle ship you need a Palm Boat.[3]

Example recipes

Here are the Oak ship recipes as they work in the pack. The other wood types follow the same pattern with their own boat.[3]

The Brigg and Galley recipes also ask for a wooden chest from the balm:wooden_chests tag, so any chest in that tag works. The Cog does not need one. Every ship recipe uses the Sail and a Lead alongside the boat.[3]

Watch out: The recipe with the id smallships:acacia_galley is listed in the recipe dump as producing an Acacia Cog, not an Acacia Galley. Keep that in mind if you are planning an Acacia fleet.[3]

Which Small Ships config options matter?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0 guide

Small Ships has two config files in this pack: a client file for camera and creative-tab settings, and a common file for ship stats, storage and general behavior. Here are the options you're most likely to care about, with the values this pack uses.[6][7]

Ship stats

Each ship has its own attribute options. The Brigg, Cog and Galley share the same acceleration and reverse speed, so the real differences are health, top speed and how sharply they turn.[7]

Storage and biome settings

General behavior

Client options

Tip: To change the camera distance in game, switch to third person view with F5 and use the mousewheel. The zoom min and max options above set the limits.[1][6]
Watch out: Both config files contain a schematicVersion entry that is marked as internal, with a comment saying DO NOT TOUCH. Leave it alone.[6][7]

What changed in Small Ships between versions?

1 part

All the Mods - Gravitas 3.8 includes Small Ships 2.0.0-a2.3.1, built for Minecraft 1.18.2. The mod was first included in Gravitas 1.1 or earlier, so it has been in the pack for a long time.[8]

Mod changelog highlights

  • 2.0.0a2.2 added a paddling modifier.[9]
  • 2.0.0a2.2 fixed the incompatibility with Immersive Portals and Oh The Biomes You'll Go.[9]
  • 2.0.0a2.2 adjusted passenger positions for all ships.[9]
  • 2.0.0a2.2 fixed the sail sound firing twice.[9]
  • 2.0.0-a2.3.1, the version in this pack, fixed a weird mixin crash on 1.18.2.[8][10]
Watch out: Both of these mod releases are marked by the author as alpha builds intended for testing and development, not for production servers. The author says to back up your worlds and files before loading them. The 2.0.0a2.2 notes also warn you may see data loss or corruption when updating to that version, so make a backup before you update a world that has ships in it.[9][10]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Small Ships are available, so any changes the pack itself made to this mod between releases are unverified.
