What is Small Ships?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0 guide
Small Ships adds sailable, medieval-inspired ships to Minecraft, built for exploration, trade and naval battles. It's designed to be vanilla friendly, and you can mount cannons on the ships to fight at sea. If you want to cross oceans in something with more character than a boat, this mod is for you.[1]
The pack ships Small Ships version 2.0.0-a2.3.1, built for Minecraft 1.18.2.[2]
The four ships
- Cog: a cold-water medieval trade ship with 108 slots, up to 4 cannons, 5 passengers, a speed of 40 km/h and 300 HP.[1]
- Brigg: a two-masted cold-water trade ship with 162 slots, up to 6 cannons, 11 passengers, a speed of 45 km/h and 400 HP.[1]
- Galley: a warm-water warfare ship with 54 slots, 9 passengers, a speed of 40 km/h and 200 HP.[1]
- Drakkar: a cold-water Viking-style ship with 54 slots, 11 passengers, an ice-breaker ability, banner-pattern shields, a speed of 30 km/h and 200 HP.[1]
Getting started
Place the ship far out in open water, because it needs space to spawn. Right-click to sit in it. While you're aboard, press R to open or close the sail, and use W and S to raise or lower the sail speed.[1]
Biome matters. Cold-water ships are 10% faster in cold biomes and 10% slower in warm ones, and warm-water ships do the opposite. Each cannon slows you by 2.5%, and cargo can cost you up to 10% of your speed.[1]
Unverified The stats above come from the mod's project page. Nothing I was given confirms that this pack leaves them unchanged, and the pack's crafting recipes and config options for the mod aren't confirmed either. I also found no quests or progression-path entries for Small Ships, so I can't say where it fits in the pack's progression.
How do you get started with Small Ships?
4 parts
Small Ships adds sailable ships with optional cannons. Getting afloat takes only a few crafts, so here is the order I'd go in.[1]
First, craft a Sail
Every ship recipe in this pack needs a Sail, so make that first. You can also color a sail later by right-clicking it with dye.[1][3]

This is the mod's own Sail recipe, the pack has not changed it.
Then build your ship
Each wood type has its own ship recipe, and each one uses the matching vanilla boat plus a Sail. You can make the Oak Galley, Birch Galley, Spruce Galley, Jungle Galley and Dark Oak Galley. The acacia recipe gives you the Acacia Cog instead of a galley. These are the mod's own recipes, and the pack has not changed them.[3]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: smallships:oak_galley
The other galley recipes follow the same pattern with their own boat type.
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: smallships:acacia_galley
This one makes the Acacia Cog, not a Galley.
The mod's project page describes the Galley as a warm-water ship and the Cog as a cold-water ship. It says warm-water ships are 10% faster in warm biomes and 10% slower in cold ones, and cold-water ships work the other way round. Those figures come from the mod's own page.[1]
Launch and sail
- Place the ship in water, well away from the shore, because it needs space to spawn.[1]
- Right-click the ship to sit in it.[1]
- Press R to open or close the sail, and use W and S to raise or lower sail speed.[1]
- Use F5 with the mouse wheel to adjust the camera distance.[1]
- Crouch and right-click the ship to open its inventory from outside.[1]
Add cannons when you want to fight
The pack changed both cannon recipes from the mod's defaults, so check the recipes below rather than relying on other guides. You need the Ship Cannon itself, and Cannon Ball items for ammunition.[3]

Right-click while holding a cannon to add it to a ship. Press Space while looking in the direction you want to fire, with cannonballs in the ship's inventory. To take a cannon off again, use a pickaxe. The mod's page says each cannon slows the ship by 2.5%.[1]
How does Small Ships work?
7 parts
Small Ships adds sailable, medieval-style ships with chests, passengers and mountable cannons. The sources I have cover how you handle ships, how cannons work and what the pack's config sets. They don't describe any machines, multiblocks or power systems for this mod, so this section sticks to what is confirmed.[1]
Boarding and sailing
- Place the ship in water, well away from the shore. Ships need space to spawn.[1]
- Right-click the ship to sit in it.[1]
- While seated, press R to open or close the sail, and use W and S to raise or lower sail speed.[1]
- In third person (F5), use the mouse wheel to adjust the camera distance.[1]
- Right-click an entity to dismount it from the ship. To open the ship's inventory from outside, crouch and right-click it.[1]
Key-binds can be changed in the options menu. Ships enter third person when you board, controlled by Ships.EnterThirdPerson, which is true in the pack.[1][4]
Cannons
- Add a Ship Cannon with a right-click while holding one.[1][3]
- Press Space while looking in a cannon's direction to fire it. You need Cannon Ball items in the ship's inventory.[1]
- Use a pickaxe to remove a mounted cannon.[1]
- Each cannon slows the ship by 2.5%. The Cog takes up to 4 cannons and the Brigg up to 6.[1]
The pack changed both cannon recipes from the mod's own, so use these ones.[3]

Speed, cargo and biomes
Cold-water ships are 10% faster in cold biomes and 10% slower in warm ones. Warm-water ships are the other way round. Cargo can slow a ship by up to 10%. The Cog, Brigg and Drakkar are cold-water ships, and the Galley is a warm-water ship.[1]
Capacity
- Cog: 108 slots and 5 passengers.[1]
- Brigg: 162 slots and 11 passengers.[1]
- Galley: 54 slots and 9 passengers.[1]
- Drakkar: 54 slots and 11 passengers. It can break ice and use banner patterns as shields.[1]
Ship stats in this pack
All of these values come from the pack's config file and match the mod defaults. Each is a health value, a speed factor and a turn factor. For comparison, the config notes a vanilla boat has 60 health. Changes take effect after a restart.[4]
- Cog: health Ships.CogHealth is 300, speed factor Ships.CogSpeedFactor is 1.25, turn factor Ships.CogTurnFactor is 0.1.[4]
- Brigg: health Ships.BriggHealth is 600, speed factor Ships.BriggSpeedFactor is 1.28, turn factor Ships.BriggTurnFactor is 0.2.[4]
- Galley: health Ships.GalleyHealth is 600, speed factor Ships.GalleySpeedFactor is 1.3, turn factor Ships.GalleyTurnFactor is 0.5.[4]
- Drakkar: health Ships.DrakkarHealth is 360, speed factor Ships.DrakkarSpeedFactor is 1.25, turn factor Ships.DrakkarTurnFactor is 0.3. Ships.DrakkarIceBreakSpeed is 2, and higher values mean slower ice breaking.[4]
- Dhow: health Ships.DhowHealth is 400, speed factor Ships.DhowSpeedFactor is 1.35, turn factor Ships.DhowTurnFactor is 0.3.[4]
- War Galley: health Ships.WarGalleyHealth is 600, speed factor Ships.WarGalleySpeedFactor is 1.15, turn factor Ships.WarGalleyTurnFactor is 0.4.[4]
- Row Boat: health Ships.RowBoatHealth is 100, speed factor Ships.RowBoatSpeedFactor is 1, turn factor Ships.RowBoatTurnFactor is 0.8.[4]
Other ship options
- [[config:config/smallships-common.toml#Ships.Passenger BlackList]] is empty in the pack. Any entity ids you add to it can't board ships.[4]
- Ships.WaterMobFlee, Ships.MakeWaveAnimation and Ships.PlaySwimmSound are all true. They control whether water mobs flee ships, whether ships make a waving animation and whether they play swimming sounds.[4]
Upkeep and crafting
Right-click a ship with dye to color its sail. Repair a ship with iron nuggets and planks. Use a name tag to name it.[1]
The Sail is used in every ship recipe below, so craft it first. The wood variants Oak Galley, Birch Galley, Spruce Galley, Jungle Galley and Dark Oak Galley each have their own recipe. These are the mod's own recipes, unchanged by the pack.[3]

How do you progress through Small Ships?
3 parts
Unverified No quests in this pack involve Small Ships, and the mod is not on the ATM Star quest path, so the quest book does not guide you through it. The sources here also show no in-pack guidebook for it. The order below follows the crafting recipes instead.
Small Ships doesn't have tiers in the usual sense. You work through it in steps: craft a Sail, turn it into a ship, then add weapons if you want them.[3]
First, the Sail
Every ship recipe in this pack uses a Sail as a component, so make this one first. It is the mod's own recipe, and the pack hasn't changed it.[3]
Crafting Shaped

The Sail is a mod recipe that the pack leaves unchanged.
Then, your ship
There is a ship recipe for each wood type: oak, spruce, birch, jungle, dark oak and acacia. They are all mod recipes the pack hasn't touched, and each one builds on the Sail. The recipes below show exactly what goes in. Pick the wood you like best.[3]

Heads up: this recipe is named a galley, but it gives you the Acacia Cog.
Finally, cannons and ammo
The Ship Cannon and Cannon Ball recipes are both changed by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. The recipes below are the in-pack versions.[3]

Which Small Ships config options matter?
4 parts
Good news: the ship settings live in one file, config/smallships-common.toml, and this pack leaves almost all of it at the mod's defaults. Only one value was changed, so there isn't much to untangle. Every option here takes effect after a restart.[4]
The one value the pack changed
Ships.ShipZoom is set to 6 in this pack. The mod default is 0.2, and the file lists a range of 1.0 to 20.0.[4]
Ship health (all mod defaults)
Each ship has its own health option. The config notes that a vanilla boat has 60, so every ship here is much sturdier. These are the values this pack uses, and they all match the mod defaults:[4]
- Ships.RowBoatHealth: 100[4]
- Ships.CogHealth: 300[4]
- Ships.DrakkarHealth: 360[4]
- Ships.DhowHealth: 400[4]
- Ships.BriggHealth: 600[4]
- Ships.GalleyHealth: 600[4]
- Ships.WarGalleyHealth: 600[4]
Speed and turning (all mod defaults)
Speed factors have a range of 0.0 to 2.0, and turn factors have a range of 0.0 to 1.0. The pack leaves every one at the mod default:[4]
- Row boat: speed Ships.RowBoatSpeedFactor = 1, turn Ships.RowBoatTurnFactor = 0.8[4]
- Cog: speed Ships.CogSpeedFactor = 1.25, turn Ships.CogTurnFactor = 0.1[4]
- Dhow: speed Ships.DhowSpeedFactor = 1.35, turn Ships.DhowTurnFactor = 0.3[4]
- Drakkar: speed Ships.DrakkarSpeedFactor = 1.25, turn Ships.DrakkarTurnFactor = 0.3[4]
- Brigg: speed Ships.BriggSpeedFactor = 1.28, turn Ships.BriggTurnFactor = 0.2[4]
- Galley: speed Ships.GalleySpeedFactor = 1.3, turn Ships.GalleyTurnFactor = 0.5[4]
- War Galley: speed Ships.WarGalleySpeedFactor = 1.15, turn Ships.WarGalleyTurnFactor = 0.4[4]
Other options
- Ships.DrakkarIceBreakSpeed is 2, the mod default. Higher values mean slower ice breaking.[4]
- [[config:config/smallships-common.toml#Ships.Passenger BlackList]] is empty, so no entity types are blocked from boarding. If you want to block some, the file's example format is ["minecraft:creeper", "minecraft:sheep"].[4]
- Ships.EnterThirdPerson, Ships.MakeWaveAnimation, Ships.PlaySwimmSound and Ships.WaterMobFlee are all true, the mod defaults.[4]
What changed in Small Ships between versions?
1 part
Gravitas 3.2 ships Small Ships 2.0.0a2.2. The mod has been in the pack since Gravitas 1.1 or earlier, so it's a long-time part of the modpack.[5]
2.0.0a2.2 (the version in this pack)
This is the build you're sailing with in 3.2. The mod's own changelog lists these changes:[5][6]
- Added a paddling modifier.[6]
- Fixed the incompatibility with Immersive Portals and Oh The Biomes You'll Go.[6]
- Adjusted passenger positions for all ships.[6]
- Fixed the sail sound firing twice.[6]
Unverified No pack changelog entries for Small Ships were available, so changes between earlier Gravitas releases and 3.2 are unverified.
