What is Small Ships?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0 guide
Small Ships adds sailable, medieval-inspired ships to Minecraft, built for exploration, trade and naval battles. It's designed to be vanilla friendly, and you can mount cannons on the ships to fight at sea. If you want to cross oceans in something with more character than a boat, this mod is for you.[1]
The pack ships Small Ships version 2.0.0-a2.3.1, built for Minecraft 1.18.2.[2]
The four ships
- Cog: a cold-water medieval trade ship with 108 slots, up to 4 cannons, 5 passengers, a speed of 40 km/h and 300 HP.[1]
- Brigg: a two-masted cold-water trade ship with 162 slots, up to 6 cannons, 11 passengers, a speed of 45 km/h and 400 HP.[1]
- Galley: a warm-water warfare ship with 54 slots, 9 passengers, a speed of 40 km/h and 200 HP.[1]
- Drakkar: a cold-water Viking-style ship with 54 slots, 11 passengers, an ice-breaker ability, banner-pattern shields, a speed of 30 km/h and 200 HP.[1]
Getting started
Place the ship far out in open water, because it needs space to spawn. Right-click to sit in it. While you're aboard, press R to open or close the sail, and use W and S to raise or lower the sail speed.[1]
Biome matters. Cold-water ships are 10% faster in cold biomes and 10% slower in warm ones, and warm-water ships do the opposite. Each cannon slows you by 2.5%, and cargo can cost you up to 10% of your speed.[1]
Unverified The stats above come from the mod's project page. Nothing I was given confirms that this pack leaves them unchanged, and the pack's crafting recipes and config options for the mod aren't confirmed either. I also found no quests or progression-path entries for Small Ships, so I can't say where it fits in the pack's progression.
How do you get started with Small Ships?
4 parts
Small Ships adds sailable boats, and in this pack the path to your first ship is a short chain. You make a smallships:sail_item, then use it to turn a boat into a bigger ship. Every Small Ships recipe in the pack data has been changed by the pack, so don't trust what you remember from the mod's default recipes.[1][3]
Step 1: Craft a Sail
The sail comes first because every Cog and Brigg recipe in the pack needs one. Here is the pack's version:[3]
Step 2: Choose your ship
The pack has recipes for two ship types, the Cog and the Brigg, each in several wood variants: oak, birch, spruce, acacia and jungle. Both are medieval cold-water trade ships. The two recipes ask for different things alongside the sail, so check both before you gather materials.[1][3]

Oak is just the example here. The birch, spruce, acacia and jungle Cogs have their own recipes, and the jungle ones use a palm boat.

The other Briggs follow the same pattern for their wood type.
For comparison, the mod's project page lists the Cog at 108 slots, up to 4 cannons, 5 passengers, 40 km/h and 300 HP. It lists the Brigg at 162 slots, up to 6 cannons, 11 passengers, 45 km/h and 400 HP.[1]
Step 3: Launch and sail
- Place the ship far away from the shore, in water. Ships need space to spawn.[1]
- Right-click the ship to sit in it.[1]
- While seated, press R to open or close the sail, and use W and S to increase or decrease the sail speed.[1]
- Hold F5 (third person) and use the mouse wheel to change the camera distance.[1]
- To open the ship's inventory from outside, crouch and right-click it.[1]
Small extras
How does Small Ships work?
6 parts
Small Ships has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids in anything the sources describe. It adds sailable ships, so the core mechanics are steering, sail control, cargo, cannons and how tough each hull is. Here is how it all works, using the pack's own config values.[1]
Getting aboard and sailing
- Place the ship far out in open water, because it needs space to spawn. Then right-click it to sit down.[1]
- While seated, press R to open or close the sail, and use W and S to raise or lower sail speed.[1]
- In third person (F5), the mouse wheel adjusts the camera distance.[1]
- Right-click an entity to dismount it from the ship.[1]
- To open the ship's inventory from outside, crouch and right-click it.[1]
Right-click with dye to color the sails. Use a name tag to name your ship. To repair a damaged ship, use iron nuggets and planks.[1]
Cargo and cannons
The project page lists the Cog at 108 inventory slots, up to 4 cannons and 5 passengers, so the Oak Cog and its wood variants follow that. The Brigg, such as the Oak Brigg, gets 162 slots, up to 6 cannons and 11 passengers.[1][3]
- Add a cannon by right-clicking the ship while holding one.[1]
- Fire with Space while looking in the cannon's direction. Cannonballs must be in the ship's inventory.[1]
- Remove a cannon with a pickaxe. The key binds can be changed in the options.[1]
What affects speed
- Cold-water ships (Cog, Brigg, Drakkar) are 10% faster in cold biomes and 10% slower in warm ones.[1]
- Warm-water ships (the Galley) are 10% faster in warm biomes and 10% slower in cold ones.[1]
- Each cannon you mount slows the ship by 2.5%.[1]
- A heavy cargo load can slow the ship by up to 10%.[1]
Ship stats in this pack
Every ship has a health, a speed factor and a turn factor in Ships.CogHealth and its neighbors in the same file. These settings take effect after a restart. For comparison, the file notes that a vanilla boat has 60 health. The pack leaves all of these ship stats at the mod's defaults.[4]
- Row Boat: 100 health, speed factor 1, turn factor 0.8.[4]
- Cog: 300 health, speed factor 1.25, turn factor 0.1.[4]
- Brigg: 600 health, speed factor 1.28, turn factor 0.2.[4]
- Dhow: 400 health, speed factor 1.35, turn factor 0.3.[4]
- Drakkar: 360 health, speed factor 1.25, turn factor 0.3.[4]
- Galley: 600 health, speed factor 1.3, turn factor 0.5.[4]
- War Galley: 600 health, speed factor 1.15, turn factor 0.4.[4]
The Drakkar has an ice-breaker ability and can carry banner patterns as shields. Ships.DrakkarIceBreakSpeed is set to 2, and the config notes that higher values mean slower breaking.[1][4]
Behavior options
- Ships.ShipZoom is set to 6 in the pack. The mod default is 0.2, so the pack changed this one. The config only describes it as the ship zoom, with a range of 1.0 to 20.0.[4]
- Ships.EnterThirdPerson is true, so you enter ships in third person.[4]
- Ships.MakeWaveAnimation and Ships.PlaySwimmSound are both true.[4]
- Ships.WaterMobFlee is true, so water mobs flee from ships.[4]
- [[config:config/smallships-common.toml#Ships.Passenger BlackList]] is empty. Any entity you add to it can't board, for example a creeper or a sheep.[4]
Crafting in this pack
The pack changed the recipes for the smallships:sail_item and for the Cog and Brigg ships, so don't rely on the mod's defaults. The recipes below show the exact in-pack versions.[3]
How do you progress through Small Ships?
3 parts
The sources I have for Small Ships in this pack show a build order rather than a ladder of tiers. You craft a smallships:sail_item first, then use it to make a Cog or a Brigg in a wood variant. The pack changed every one of these recipes, so don't rely on recipes you remember from other modpacks.[3]
Start with the Sail
Every Cog and Brigg recipe uses a Sail, so this is your first craft. The pack's version is a shaped crafting recipe.[3]

Pick a ship type
The Cog and the Brigg each have their own shaped recipe in the pack. Both are built from a Sail, a TFC boat and a wooden chest, so you can make them from the boats of the TFC woods listed below. The Oak versions are shown here.[3]

All the variants
- Cogs: Oak Cog, Birch Cog, Spruce Cog, Acacia Cog and Jungle Cog.[3]
- Briggs: Oak Brigg, Birch Brigg, Spruce Brigg, Acacia Brigg and Jungle Brigg.[3]
- The Jungle Cog and Jungle Brigg use a Palm Boat from TFC, while the other woods use the TFC boat of the same name.[3]
How does Small Ships work with other mods?
2 parts
In this pack, Small Ships isn't crafted from vanilla parts alone. Every ship recipe (a Cog and a Brigg for each wood type) has been changed by the pack, and each one needs a boat from the tfc namespace. That's the main link between Small Ships and the rest of your world.[3]
Which boat goes into which ship
Each Small Ships wood variant takes the matching tfc boat as its base. The Cog and Brigg of one wood type both use the same boat.[3]
- Oak Cog and Oak Brigg use the Oak Boat.[3]
- Spruce Cog and Spruce Brigg use the Spruce Boat.[3]
- Birch Cog and Birch Brigg use the Birch Boat.[3]
- Acacia Cog and Acacia Brigg use the Acacia Boat.[3]
- Jungle Cog and Jungle Brigg use the Palm Boat.[3]
Cogs, Briggs and the extra parts
Cogs and Briggs differ in what else they need beyond the boat and the mod's own smallships:sail_item. Cogs ask for Wool Yarn, so you'll need that from the tfc side before you can build one. Briggs use a Lead instead.[3]

Cog example: every Cog in the pack follows this pattern, with the matching tfc boat swapped in.

The jungle ships are the one exception to the naming: they use the palm boat from tfc.
Which Small Ships config options matter?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 3.2 guide
Good news: the ship settings live in one file, config/smallships-common.toml, and this pack leaves almost all of it at the mod's defaults. Only one value was changed, so there isn't much to untangle. Every option here takes effect after a restart.[5]
The one value the pack changed
Ships.ShipZoom is set to 6 in this pack. The mod default is 0.2, and the file lists a range of 1.0 to 20.0.[5]
Ship health (all mod defaults)
Each ship has its own health option. The config notes that a vanilla boat has 60, so every ship here is much sturdier. These are the values this pack uses, and they all match the mod defaults:[5]
- Ships.RowBoatHealth: 100[5]
- Ships.CogHealth: 300[5]
- Ships.DrakkarHealth: 360[5]
- Ships.DhowHealth: 400[5]
- Ships.BriggHealth: 600[5]
- Ships.GalleyHealth: 600[5]
- Ships.WarGalleyHealth: 600[5]
Speed and turning (all mod defaults)
Speed factors have a range of 0.0 to 2.0, and turn factors have a range of 0.0 to 1.0. The pack leaves every one at the mod default:[5]
- Row boat: speed Ships.RowBoatSpeedFactor = 1, turn Ships.RowBoatTurnFactor = 0.8[5]
- Cog: speed Ships.CogSpeedFactor = 1.25, turn Ships.CogTurnFactor = 0.1[5]
- Dhow: speed Ships.DhowSpeedFactor = 1.35, turn Ships.DhowTurnFactor = 0.3[5]
- Drakkar: speed Ships.DrakkarSpeedFactor = 1.25, turn Ships.DrakkarTurnFactor = 0.3[5]
- Brigg: speed Ships.BriggSpeedFactor = 1.28, turn Ships.BriggTurnFactor = 0.2[5]
- Galley: speed Ships.GalleySpeedFactor = 1.3, turn Ships.GalleyTurnFactor = 0.5[5]
- War Galley: speed Ships.WarGalleySpeedFactor = 1.15, turn Ships.WarGalleyTurnFactor = 0.4[5]
Other options
- Ships.DrakkarIceBreakSpeed is 2, the mod default. Higher values mean slower ice breaking.[5]
- [[config:config/smallships-common.toml#Ships.Passenger BlackList]] is empty, so no entity types are blocked from boarding. If you want to block some, the file's example format is ["minecraft:creeper", "minecraft:sheep"].[5]
- Ships.EnterThirdPerson, Ships.MakeWaveAnimation, Ships.PlaySwimmSound and Ships.WaterMobFlee are all true, the mod defaults.[5]
