What is TerraFirmaShips?

3 parts

TerraFirmaShips is a compatibility mod that connects TerraFirmaCraft with Small Ships, and both are required dependencies. This pack includes version 1.0.[1][2]

What it adds

  • Ships for every TFC wood type, with textures that match TFC boats.[1]
  • Crafting recipes that use TFC ingredients.[1]
  • Size and weight for Small Ships items.[1]

The three ships

There are three kinds of ship: the cog, the brigg and the galley. Each can be crafted with any wood type, and all of them need sails. The cog is the cheapest, smallest and most basic. The brigg is the largest, with the biggest inventory and the most seats. The galley is the most maneuverable and the only one with oars.[3]

You can dye the sails and rigging, and you can attach a banner to the top of the mast like a flag. Once a ship is placed, you can sail it, steer it, open its inventory and moor it with a lead. The more cargo and cannons you carry, the lower your maximum speed.[3][4]

Naval warfare

You can also turn ships into weapons with cast iron cannons. A cog can hold four cannons, a brigg can hold six and a galley can hold two. Cannon balls explode on impact, dealing damage and destroying terrain, and any ship they hit is deleted without dropping the ship item. Mounted cannons can't be retrieved, so plan your layout before you place them.[5]

Unverified Where this pack's quest book places TerraFirmaShips, and whether the ATM Star path uses it, is not shown by the sources here. Check the pack's quest book chapters for that detail.

How do you get started with TerraFirmaShips?

4 parts

TerraFirmaShips gives you ships in every TFC wood type, and your first ship is the quickest way to get comfortable with it. There are three kinds, and each one can be crafted with any wood type.[1][3]

Step by step

  1. Pick a wood type. The wood type of the boat sets the wood type of a cog. For a brigg or galley, the boat and the chest set it.[3]
  2. Get your hands on a sail. Every ship recipe needs one. Sails are crafted from wool, leads and logs, and the type of log or wool you use does not change the finished ship.[3][6]
  3. Start with a cog. It is the cheapest, smallest and most basic ship, so it makes a good first build.[3]
  4. Place the ship. If it will not place, make sure the area is not occupied by blocks or entities.[3]
  5. Climb aboard. Your camera switches to third person, and you can toggle the sail to start moving forward.[4]

Which ship should you build?

Once you have the hang of the cog, you can move up. The Ash Brigg is the largest ship, with the largest inventory and the most seats. The Ash Galley is the most maneuverable and the only one with oars. Every wood type has its own brigg and galley recipe.[3][6]

Sailing basics

You control your speed by unreefing and reefing the sails, and in a galley you can also paddle forwards. Your ship's top speed drops the more cargo and cannons it carries, so don't overload it. To park it, use a lead on the ship to moor it.[4]

You can open the ship's inventory while sitting in it or from outside. Entities that enter the ship's hitbox become passengers if there are open seats, just like in vanilla.[4]

You can also dye the sails and rigging by using a dye on the ship. Using a banner attaches it to the top of the mast like a flag. Aim at the ship's hitbox, around the hull.[3]

Watch out: If a ship takes enough damage it drops as an item, and so do the items in its inventory. Any dyes, banners or cannons used on the ship do not drop.[3]

Cannons come later

Cast iron cannons turn a ship into a weapon. A cog can hold four, a brigg can hold six and a galley can hold two. Cannon balls need to be in the ship's inventory before you can fire.[5]

Watch out: Once a cannon is mounted, you cannot get it back. Destroying the ship removes it, but it will not drop. Any ship hit by a cannon ball is deleted without dropping its ship item, so be careful about firing at your own ships.[5]

How does TerraFirmaShips work?

5 parts

TerraFirmaShips is a compatibility mod. It brings TerraFirmaCraft and Small Ships together by adding ships for every TFC wood type, with textures that match TFC boats, and it adds size and weight to Small Ships items. The mechanics below are about building, sailing and arming ships.[1][7]

Ship types

There are three kinds of ship: the cog, the brigg and the galley. Each one can be crafted in any wood type, for example Ash Cog, Ash Brigg and Ash Galley.[3][6]

  • Cog: the cheapest, smallest and most basic ship. The boat you use decides its wood type.[3]
  • Brigg: the largest ship, with the largest inventory and the most seats. The chest and boat you use decide its wood type.[3]
  • Galley: the most maneuverable ship and the only one with oars. The chest and boat you use decide its wood type.[3]

All three ships require sails. The type of log or wool used for the sails does not affect the finished ship.[3]

Ash is just the example. In this pack every wood type has its own cog, brigg and galley recipe.

Tip: If you can't place a ship, check that the area is free of blocks and entities.[3]

Sailing

Once a ship is placed, you can enter it, and your camera switches to third person automatically. You can zoom by scrolling or switch perspective with the perspective key. Entities that enter the ship's hitbox become passengers if there are open seats, just like in vanilla.[4]

The sail has its own toggle key. Once the sail is deployed, the boat starts moving forward on its own. You control speed by unreefing and reefing the sails, and you steer with the turn controls. In a galley you can also paddle forward.[4]

You open the ship's inventory while sitting in the ship, or from outside the ship with a key combination. The more cargo and cannons the ship carries, the lower its maximum speed. You can moor a ship by using a lead on it.[4]

Customizing your ship

Using a dye on the ship dyes the sails and rigging. Using a banner attaches it horizontally to the top of the mast, like a flag. All of these interactions must target the ship's hitbox, around the hull.[3]

Naval warfare

Ships can carry cast iron cannons. A cog holds four cannons, a brigg holds six and a galley holds two. You mount a cannon by using it on the ship while holding it.[5]

Watch out: Once a cannon is mounted, you can't get it back. Destroying the ship removes the cannons, but they won't drop.[5]

To fire, put cannon balls into the ship's inventory first. Then use the fire control to shoot the cannons on the side of the ship you are looking at. Cannon balls explode on impact, dealing damage and destroying terrain.[5]

Any ship hit by a cannon ball is deleted without dropping the ship item, though the items in its inventory still drop.[5]

Damage and drops

If enough damage is dealt to a ship, it drops as an item, and the items in its inventory drop with it. Any dyes, banners or cannons used on the ship won't drop.[3]

Unverified This mod has no config files in the pack and its lang file has no tooltips, so the sources here do not show exact ship speeds, inventory sizes, seat counts or how much damage it takes to break a ship.

How do you progress through TerraFirmaShips?

4 parts

TerraFirmaShips has no big tech tree to climb. Progression here means picking one of three ship kinds, and each one trades something for something else. Every kind can be built from any wood type, so you can match the ship to whatever trees you have around.[3]

The Cog

The cog is the cheapest, smallest and most basic ship, so it's the natural place to start. The wood type of the boat you use decides the wood type of the cog. For example, Ash Cog is built from an Ash boat.[3][6]

Every wood type follows the same pattern, with that wood's boat.

If you want to arm it, a cog can hold four cannons.[5]

The Brigg

The brigg is the largest ship, with the largest inventory and the most seats. That makes it the one for hauling cargo and crew. The wood type of both its chests and its boats determines the wood type of the brigg, as with Ash Brigg. It can hold six cannons, the most of the three.[3][5][6]

The brigg recipe adds a chest of the same wood to the boat.

The Galley

The galley is the most maneuverable ship and the only one with oars. You can paddle forwards in it, which is handy when you want to move without relying on the sail. Its wood type is set by its chests and boats, as with Ash Galley. It holds only two cannons.[3][4][5][6]

Like the brigg, the galley recipe uses a boat and a chest of the same wood.

Which one should you build?

  • Cog: cheapest and most basic, with room for four cannons.[3][5]
  • Brigg: biggest inventory, most seats and six cannons.[3][5]
  • Galley: best handling and the only one with oars, but just two cannons.[3][5]

In this pack the cog recipe needs just a boat of the wood you choose, while the brigg and galley recipes also need a chest of the same wood. All three kinds need a sail and a lead.[3][6]

Watch out: Cannons can't be retrieved once mounted. Destroying the ship removes them without dropping them. A ship hit by a cannon ball is deleted without dropping the ship item, though the items in its inventory still drop. Also, the more cargo and cannons a ship carries, the lower its maximum speed.[4][5]
Tip: All ships can be dyed, and a banner can be attached to the top of the mast like a flag. You can also moor a ship by using a lead on it.[3][4]

How does TerraFirmaShips work with other mods?

2 parts

TerraFirmaShips is a bridge between TerraFirmaCraft and Small Ships. It needs both of them. It adds ships for every TFC wood type, textures that match TFC boats, crafting recipes that use TFC ingredients, and size and weight values for Small Ships items.[1][7]

How the recipes connect the mods

Every ship recipe in this pack mixes items from TFC, Small Ships and vanilla. TFC supplies the wooden boats and, for the brigg and the galley, the wooden chests. Small Ships supplies the Sail. Vanilla supplies the Lead.[6]

The in-game guide adds that all ships require sails, and that sails are crafted from wool, leads and logs. The type of log or wool does not affect the finished ship.[3]

The wood type of the TFC boat decides the wood type of your cog. For the brigg and the galley, the wood type of both the boat and the chest decides it.[3]

Using your ship

Once a ship is placed, you toggle the sail to start moving, and you can unreef or reef the sails to control your speed. Your maximum speed drops the more cargo and cannons your ship carries.[4]

Tip: The lead is part of the ship recipes, and you can also use it on a placed ship to moor it. Keep a spare in your inventory.[4][6]

What changed in TerraFirmaShips between versions?

1 part

All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0 ships with TerraFirmaShips 1.0 (the file tfships-1.0.jar). The mod was already in the pack in Gravitas 3.9 or earlier, so it isn't new to this release.[2]

TerraFirmaShips 1.0

The mod's own changelog for 1.0 lists these additions:[8]

  • A Cog, a Brigg and a Galley for each TFC wood.[8]
  • Textures for the base Small Ships ships, changed to match the TFC boat textures.[8]
  • Recipes for ships, cannons and cannon balls.[8]
  • Field guide entries.[8]

I don't have any pack changelog entries for this mod, so I can't tell you whether the pack changed anything about it between releases.[2]
