What is Small Ships?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0 guide
Small Ships adds sailable, medieval-inspired ships to Minecraft, built for exploration, trade and naval battles. It's designed to be vanilla friendly, and you can mount cannons on the ships to fight at sea. If you want to cross oceans in something with more character than a boat, this mod is for you.[1]
The pack ships Small Ships version 2.0.0-a2.3.1, built for Minecraft 1.18.2.[2]
The four ships
- Cog: a cold-water medieval trade ship with 108 slots, up to 4 cannons, 5 passengers, a speed of 40 km/h and 300 HP.[1]
- Brigg: a two-masted cold-water trade ship with 162 slots, up to 6 cannons, 11 passengers, a speed of 45 km/h and 400 HP.[1]
- Galley: a warm-water warfare ship with 54 slots, 9 passengers, a speed of 40 km/h and 200 HP.[1]
- Drakkar: a cold-water Viking-style ship with 54 slots, 11 passengers, an ice-breaker ability, banner-pattern shields, a speed of 30 km/h and 200 HP.[1]
Getting started
Place the ship far out in open water, because it needs space to spawn. Right-click to sit in it. While you're aboard, press R to open or close the sail, and use W and S to raise or lower the sail speed.[1]
Biome matters. Cold-water ships are 10% faster in cold biomes and 10% slower in warm ones, and warm-water ships do the opposite. Each cannon slows you by 2.5%, and cargo can cost you up to 10% of your speed.[1]
Unverified The stats above come from the mod's project page. Nothing I was given confirms that this pack leaves them unchanged, and the pack's crafting recipes and config options for the mod aren't confirmed either. I also found no quests or progression-path entries for Small Ships, so I can't say where it fits in the pack's progression.
How do you get started with Small Ships?
3 parts
Small Ships adds sailable ships, and in this pack every ship recipe has been changed from the mod's own. Check the recipe blocks below instead of relying on what you remember from other packs. The path is simple: make a Sail, pick a ship, then get it onto open water.[1][3]
Step 1: Make a Sail
The smallships:sail_item comes first because every Cog and Brigg recipe in the pack uses it. The pack has changed its recipe, so this is the one to follow:[3]
Crafting Shaped

| any high quality cloth | any log | any high quality cloth |

The pack's changed recipe for the smallships:sail_item.
Step 2: Choose a ship
The pack has recipes for two ship types, the Cog and the Brigg, each in oak, birch, spruce, acacia and jungle versions. Both need a boat of the matching wood plus a Sail, and the jungle versions use a palm boat. Oak is shown here, and the other woods follow the same pattern.[3]

The mod's project page describes the Cog as a medieval cold-water trade ship with 108 slots, up to 4 cannons, 5 passengers, 40 km/h and 300 HP. The Brigg is the two-masted one with 162 slots, up to 6 cannons, 11 passengers, 45 km/h and 400 HP.[1]
Step 3: Launch and sail
- Place the ship far from the shore, because it needs space to spawn in the water.[1]
- Right-click the ship to sit in it.[1]
- While seated, press R to open or close the sail. W and S raise or lower the sail speed.[1]
- Use third-person view (F5) with the mouse wheel to adjust the camera distance.[1]
- To open the ship's inventory from outside, crouch and right-click it.[1]
How does Small Ships work?
7 parts
Small Ships has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids to deal with. Everything the sources describe is about building and sailing ships, so this section covers how you control them, what affects their speed, and which values the pack tunes.[1]
Getting afloat
- Place the ship far out in open water. It needs space to spawn.[1]
- Right-click the ship to sit in it.[1]
- Press R to open or close the sail, and use W and S to raise or lower the sail speed.[1]
- In third person (F5), scroll the mousewheel to adjust the camera distance.[1]
To dismount another entity, right-click it. To open the ship's inventory from outside, crouch and right-click. These key-binds can be changed in the options.[1]
Speed and cargo
The mod's project page says ship speed depends on the biome and on what you carry. Cold-water ships are 10% faster in cold biomes and 10% slower in warm ones, and warm-water ships do the opposite. Each cannon costs 2.5% speed, and a heavy cargo can cost up to 10%.[1]
The project page lists the Cog and Brigg as cold-water ships and the Galley as a warm-water ship. The Drakkar is a cold-water ship with an ice-breaker ability.[1]
Cannons
- Right-click a ship while holding a cannon to mount it.[1]
- Fire with Space while looking in the cannon's direction. You need cannonballs in the ship's inventory.[1]
- Remove a cannon with a pickaxe.[1]
Upkeep and customizing
- Repair a ship with iron nuggets and planks.[1]
- Right-click with dye to color the sails.[1]
- Use a name tag to name your ship.[1]
Crafting ships in the pack
The pack changes the recipes for the smallships:sail_item and for the Cog and Brigg variants. These are the oak, spruce, birch, acacia and jungle versions, for example Oak Cog and Oak Brigg. Here are the exact in-pack recipes for the sail and the oak versions:[3]
The other wood types have their own Cog and Brigg recipes in the pack too, such as Spruce Cog, Birch Brigg, Acacia Cog and Jungle Brigg. Here they are:[3]

Ship stats in this pack
Each ship has a health, speed factor and turn factor in the common config. All of these take effect after a restart. For comparison, the config notes that a vanilla boat has 60 health. These are the values currently set in the pack:[4]
- Brigg: health 600 (Ships.BriggHealth), speed factor 1.28 (Ships.BriggSpeedFactor), turn factor 0.2 (Ships.BriggTurnFactor).[4]
- Cog: health 300 (Ships.CogHealth), speed factor 1.25 (Ships.CogSpeedFactor), turn factor 0.1 (Ships.CogTurnFactor).[4]
- Dhow: health 400 (Ships.DhowHealth), speed factor 1.35 (Ships.DhowSpeedFactor), turn factor 0.3 (Ships.DhowTurnFactor).[4]
- Drakkar: health 360 (Ships.DrakkarHealth), speed factor 1.25 (Ships.DrakkarSpeedFactor), turn factor 0.3 (Ships.DrakkarTurnFactor).[4]
- Galley: health 600 (Ships.GalleyHealth), speed factor 1.3 (Ships.GalleySpeedFactor), turn factor 0.5 (Ships.GalleyTurnFactor).[4]
- War Galley: health 600 (Ships.WarGalleyHealth), speed factor 1.15 (Ships.WarGalleySpeedFactor), turn factor 0.4 (Ships.WarGalleyTurnFactor).[4]
- Row Boat: health 100 (Ships.RowBoatHealth), speed factor 1 (Ships.RowBoatSpeedFactor), turn factor 0.8 (Ships.RowBoatTurnFactor).[4]
Other settings
The pack changes one value from the mod default: Ships.ShipZoom is set to 6 instead of 0.2. The config only labels it "Ship Zoom" and gives no further description, so I can't say exactly what it affects beyond that.[4]
Ships.DrakkarIceBreakSpeed is 2, and higher values mean slower ice breaking.[4]
[[config:config/smallships-common.toml#Ships.Passenger BlackList]] is empty in the pack. Any entity you add to it can't board ships, for example minecraft:creeper or minecraft:sheep.[4]
These settings are switched on, as in the mod defaults: entering ships in third person (Ships.EnterThirdPerson), the wave animation (Ships.MakeWaveAnimation), swimming sounds (Ships.PlaySwimmSound) and water mobs fleeing from ships (Ships.WaterMobFlee).[4]
How do you progress through Small Ships?
4 parts
In this pack, Small Ships boils down to a short crafting chain. You craft a smallships:sail_item first, then use it to build a Cog or a Brigg in the wood type you want. The pack changed all of these recipes from the mod's defaults, so don't trust recipes you remember from other packs.[3]
The Sail
Every Cog and Brigg recipe in the pack uses a Sail, so this is your first stop. The block below shows the pack's version of the recipe.[3]

Pick a ship type and a wood
Small Ships offers Cogs and Briggs, and each comes in Oak, Birch, Spruce, Acacia and Jungle variants. The Cog and Brigg recipes differ from each other, so check the recipe block for the exact variant you're building.[3]

How does Small Ships work with other mods?
2 parts
Small Ships connects to the rest of the pack through its crafting recipes. Every cog and brigg is a shaped crafting recipe that the pack changed, and each one is built around a boat item from the tfc namespace. If you're planning a sailing setup, you'll need to get those boats first.[3]
Each ship needs a matching tfc boat
The ship's wood type follows the boat you craft it from. Both the cog and the brigg also use the mod's own smallships:sail_item and any wooden chest.[3]
- Oak Cog and Oak Brigg use the Oak Boat.[3]
- Birch Cog and Birch Brigg use the Birch Boat.[3]
- Spruce Cog and Spruce Brigg use the Spruce Boat.[3]
- Acacia Cog and Acacia Brigg use the Acacia Boat.[3]
- The jungle ships are the odd ones out: Jungle Cog and Jungle Brigg use the Palm Boat, not a jungle boat.[3]
Cog or brigg: what changes
The two ship types differ in one ingredient. Cogs ask for Wool Yarn, while briggs ask for a Lead instead. Here are the oak versions as examples; the other woods follow the same pattern with their own boat.[3]

Which Small Ships config options matter?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods - Gravitas 3.2 guide
Good news: the ship settings live in one file, config/smallships-common.toml, and this pack leaves almost all of it at the mod's defaults. Only one value was changed, so there isn't much to untangle. Every option here takes effect after a restart.[5]
The one value the pack changed
Ships.ShipZoom is set to 6 in this pack. The mod default is 0.2, and the file lists a range of 1.0 to 20.0.[5]
Ship health (all mod defaults)
Each ship has its own health option. The config notes that a vanilla boat has 60, so every ship here is much sturdier. These are the values this pack uses, and they all match the mod defaults:[5]
- Ships.RowBoatHealth: 100[5]
- Ships.CogHealth: 300[5]
- Ships.DrakkarHealth: 360[5]
- Ships.DhowHealth: 400[5]
- Ships.BriggHealth: 600[5]
- Ships.GalleyHealth: 600[5]
- Ships.WarGalleyHealth: 600[5]
Speed and turning (all mod defaults)
Speed factors have a range of 0.0 to 2.0, and turn factors have a range of 0.0 to 1.0. The pack leaves every one at the mod default:[5]
- Row boat: speed Ships.RowBoatSpeedFactor = 1, turn Ships.RowBoatTurnFactor = 0.8[5]
- Cog: speed Ships.CogSpeedFactor = 1.25, turn Ships.CogTurnFactor = 0.1[5]
- Dhow: speed Ships.DhowSpeedFactor = 1.35, turn Ships.DhowTurnFactor = 0.3[5]
- Drakkar: speed Ships.DrakkarSpeedFactor = 1.25, turn Ships.DrakkarTurnFactor = 0.3[5]
- Brigg: speed Ships.BriggSpeedFactor = 1.28, turn Ships.BriggTurnFactor = 0.2[5]
- Galley: speed Ships.GalleySpeedFactor = 1.3, turn Ships.GalleyTurnFactor = 0.5[5]
- War Galley: speed Ships.WarGalleySpeedFactor = 1.15, turn Ships.WarGalleyTurnFactor = 0.4[5]
Other options
- Ships.DrakkarIceBreakSpeed is 2, the mod default. Higher values mean slower ice breaking.[5]
- [[config:config/smallships-common.toml#Ships.Passenger BlackList]] is empty, so no entity types are blocked from boarding. If you want to block some, the file's example format is ["minecraft:creeper", "minecraft:sheep"].[5]
- Ships.EnterThirdPerson, Ships.MakeWaveAnimation, Ships.PlaySwimmSound and Ships.WaterMobFlee are all true, the mod defaults.[5]
