What is Mama's Herbs and Harvest?

Mama's Herbs and Harvest is included in this pack as version 1.21.1-19 (file herbsandharvest-1.21.1-19.jar). It has been part of the pack since version 2.25 or earlier, so it is a long-standing part of the mod list rather than a recent addition.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what the mod adds or what its gameplay looks like, so I can't say what it does, who it suits best, or whether the pack changes any of its recipes or configs. There is no in-jar guidebook to draw on either. Check the mod in-game before relying on any details.

Unverified No quests in this pack involve the mod, and it isn't on the ATM Star quest path. That means you won't find it tied to a progression milestone, so treat it as an optional extra rather than something the pack asks you to use.

How do you get started with Mama's Herbs and Harvest?

4 parts

Mama's Herbs and Harvest is all about cooking, and this pack has a lot of recipes for it. The order below is a sensible way to work through the early ones, not a fixed progression. Start with seeds, then the basic building blocks, then the kitchen pieces, and then your first dishes.[2]

Turn crops into seeds

Seed recipes are the simplest in the mod: one crop goes in and its seeds come out. The pack has them for Asparagus, Barley, Blueberry, Blackberry, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower and Celery. So a crop you find can become your next planting.[2]

The crop-to-seed recipes all work like this: one crop in, its seeds out.

Barley is a good one to start with. It makes Barley Slice and Barley Bread, and the Bagel recipe asks for barley too.[2]

Make the basic building blocks

Several dishes use simple prepared items, so make these early. Bread Slice goes into sandwiches such as the Beef and Cheddar Sandwich. The Wood Board is used in the Charcuterie Board. The Empty Pot is the base of pot dishes like the Pot of Beef Stew.[2]

Craft the kitchen furniture

The pack has crafting recipes for the Butter Churn, the Cake Stand and the Cheese Aging Shelf. Butter shows up as an ingredient in recipes such as the Blueberry Pie and the Apple Cinnamon Muffin, so the churn is worth having early.[2]

Cheese wedges also carry a dairy type in their tooltip. For example, the Feta Wedge lists Camel and Goat.[3]

Cook your first dishes

Once you have crops and basics, try recipes with short ingredient lists. Blueberry Pie and Cherry Pie are good first bakes. Blackberry Jam is a simple preserve, and its recipe needs a Spice Jar Item.[2]

Tip: Many recipes ask for "any" item from a food group, such as any egg, any milk or any sugar. When a recipe shows a tag like that, any matching item works.[2]

How does Mama's Herbs and Harvest work?

3 parts

This mod is a farming and cooking mod, so it has no power, fluid or multiblock systems to learn. The sources only back up how crops, seeds, dairy and cooking work, and that's what this section covers.[2][3]

The mod has its own in-game guide book, The Homesteader's Handbook. Its chapters cover the basket, fruit trees, herbs, prepared herbs and spices, soups cooked in a pot, pan meals, desserts, the served plate of food and the cheese shelf. The sources only give chapter titles, not the text inside them.[3]

Crops and seeds

Hover over a crop and its tooltip tells you which seed it grows from. Asparagus points to Asparagus Seeds, Blackberry points to Blackberry Seeds and Blueberry points to Blueberry Seeds. Broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, eggplant, green beans, green peppers, pineapple, raspberry, strawberry and zucchini have the same kind of seed tooltip.[3]

In this pack you get seeds by crafting them from the crop itself. It's a shapeless recipe, and the crop turns into its seeds. The same recipe pattern exists for Barley, which gives Barley Seeds.[2]

Herbs work the other way round. The seed tooltip names the herb it produces, for example Rosemary Seeds give Fresh Rosemary, and Bay Leaf, Cilantro, Lemongrass and Peppercorn seeds work the same way. The placeable herb blocks for bay leaf, lemongrass, peppercorn and rosemary show their seed in their tooltip too.[3]

Cheese and dairy types

Cheeses carry a Dairy Type tooltip that tells you which animals' milk they come from. Feta Wedge lists Camel and Goat. Parmesan lists Cow and Goat, Swiss lists Goat and Sheep, and ricotta lists Camel and Sheep. Raw Parmesan and raw Swiss have the same dairy types as their finished versions.[3]

The guide book has a chapter called Aging on the Cheese Shelf, so aging happens on that shelf. The sources don't say how long it takes or what the steps are.[3]

Cooking in the pack

The recipes for this mod that appear in the pack's recipe dump are crafting-grid recipes, mostly shapeless, with one shaped recipe for Barley Bread. Many of them accept any item from a food category, not one exact item. Bread Slice takes any bread, and the bagel toppings take any bagel.[2]

Soups and stews use Empty Pot as an ingredient, as in the beef stew pot. Jams use Spice Jar Item as an ingredient.[2]

Cooked dishes build on prepared ingredients such as Chopped Thyme, Chopped Sage, Ground Cinnamon, Cream Cheese and Cooked Sausage. Several recipes, like the beef pot pie and the apple pie, combine these with ordinary ingredients.[2]

Wood Board is made from a spruce slab in this pack, which makes it a cheap early craft.[2]

Unverified The sources don't explain how the basket, pot, pan, cheese shelf and served plate work when placed in the world, how long aging takes, or whether the pack changes any mod defaults. The pack also has no config files for this mod. Check the in-game Homesteader's Handbook for those details.

How do you progress through Mama's Herbs and Harvest?

5 parts

Unverified The sources here show no quests in this pack that involve this mod, and it is not on the ATM Star quest path. There is no quest-guided order shown, so the steps below follow how the in-pack recipes build on each other.

Think of Mama's Herbs and Harvest as a cooking ladder. You start with crops and herbs, craft a few stations, then work up from simple conversions to baked goods and finally to pots, pies and salads that combine many ingredients.[2]

First rung: seeds and chopped herbs

Your first step is turning harvested crops into seeds. In this pack, Asparagus, Barley, Blackberry, Blueberry, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower and Celery each have a crafting recipe that gives their own seeds.[2]

Crafting Shapeless

The other crops listed above follow the same one-item pattern.

Fresh herbs are chopped in the crafting grid, one fresh herb per chopped herb. Chopped herbs matter later: Chopped Thyme, Chopped Parsley, Chopped Sage and Chopped Bay Leaves are used in the pies, soups and stuffing further up the ladder.[2]

Next rung: stations and tools

Next come the craftable pieces of kit: the Butter Churn, the Cake Stand, the Cheese Aging Shelf and the Wood Board. The recipes below show how to build them.[2]

The Wood Board is also used in the Charcuterie Board recipe.

Simple foods and building blocks

Several recipes are single-step conversions that feed bigger dishes. Bread Slice is made from bread, Barley Slice and Barley Bread are made from barley, and Cooked Sausages are made from Cooked Sausage. Chips and Blackberry Jam also have short recipes.[2]

The bagel line is a good example of stacking. You craft a Bagel, turn it into a Bagel with Cream Cheese, and then into a Bagel with Salmon.[2]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: herbsandharvest:bagel_with_salmon

Baked goods

Pies, muffins, cakes and cheesecakes are the middle of the ladder. Many of them use Ground Cinnamon, such as Blueberry Pie, Blueberry Muffin, Cherry Pie and Carrot Cake. The cheesecakes use Graham Crackers.[2]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: herbsandharvest:blueberry_pie

Top of the ladder: pots, pot pies and salads

The top rung is the multi-ingredient meals. These pull in chopped herbs plus several vegetables or meats, and the soups and stews are built around an Empty Pot. Examples are Pot of Beef Stew, Pot of Chicken Noodle Soup, Pot of Broccoli and Cheddar Soup, Chicken Pot Pie, Beef Pot Pie and Cornbread Stuffing.[2]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: herbsandharvest:beef_stew_pot

Platters like the Charcuterie Board also sit near the top, since the recipe builds on the Wood Board from the stations step.[2]

How does Mama's Herbs and Harvest work with other mods?

1 part

The only connection between this mod and another mod that the pack's recipes confirm is a single crafting recipe. No quests in this pack involve the mod.[2]

Bottle of Mint

You can combine Fresh Mint with a Glass Bottle to get a Bottle of Mint. It's a shapeless crafting recipe, so the ingredients can go anywhere in the crafting grid.[2]

Shapeless, so placement in the crafting grid doesn't matter.

If you're growing mint with this mod, this recipe is where it connects to the other mod's items.[2]

Unverified The pack changelogs only record the version bumps. The mod's own changelogs for these jars aren't available, so what actually changed inside each update (new crops, recipe tweaks, fixes) is unverified. If you're checking something specific, such as a recipe that changed between releases, look at it in-game on your current version.
