What is Mama's Herbs and Harvest?

Mama's Herbs and Harvest is part of the pack, and this version of the pack (4.11) ships it at version 1.0.0, in the file herbsandharvest-1.21.1-2.jar.[1]

It isn't a new addition. The pack has included it since version 2.4 or earlier, so it has been around for a long time.[1]

Unverified I couldn't confirm what the mod adds, who it suits best, or where it fits in the pack's progression. The sources I have don't include a description, a guidebook, or any quests for it. As far as I can tell it isn't on the ATM Star quest path, and no quests in this pack involve it. I'd rather leave the gameplay details out than guess.

How do you get started with Mama's Herbs and Harvest?

2 parts

Mama's Herbs and Harvest adds a big list of crops, berries and herbs. The recipe data I have confirms two starting points in this pack: one crafting recipe and a set of Immersive Engineering cloche recipes. This section sticks to those.[2]

Step 1: Make a Produce Basket

The recipe to start with is the herbsandharvest:empty_basket. It is the mod's own shaped crafting recipe, and the pack hasn't changed it. Here it is:[2]

Empty BasketMod recipe

Crafting Shaped

4 × Bamboo

Recipe id: herbsandharvest:empty_basket

This is the mod's own shaped crafting recipe, not one added by the pack.

Step 2: Grow crops in the cloche

This pack adds Immersive Engineering cloche recipes for the mod's crops and herbs. Each recipe gives you the crop back along with its seed, so one seed keeps your supply going. For example, here is the recipe for the Radish:[2]

2× RadishAdded by the pack

Cloche (immersiveengineering)

Recipe id: immersiveengineering:kjs/18a6k0awbvbkm1adfkwm1lavm

Added by the pack, not part of the mod's defaults. It returns the radish and its seed.

The same pattern covers the vegetables, such as Tomato, Cabbage and Lettuce. It also covers the berries, such as Strawberry and Blueberry, and the grains Barley and Rye.[2]

Herbs work the same way. For example, Mint Seeds grow into Fresh Mint and return the seeds. The pack lists cloche recipes for basil, bay leaf, chive, cilantro, dill, lemongrass, mustard, oregano, parsley, peppercorn, rosemary, sage and thyme too.[2]

2× Fresh MintAdded by the pack

Cloche (immersiveengineering)

Recipe id: immersiveengineering:kjs/641v6umgubo26fpj53kzh0h8t

Mint is one of the herb cloche recipes the pack adds, and it returns the seeds.

Tip: Because every cloche recipe returns the seed, you only need one seed of a crop to get a repeatable supply. Pick the crops you want and start with those.[2]

How does Mama's Herbs and Harvest work?

2 parts

Here's the honest picture for this one: the sources I have don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power or fluid systems that belong to Mama's Herbs and Harvest itself. What they do show is one crafting recipe from the mod and a batch of automation recipes that the pack adds through Immersive Engineering. So this section stays short and sticks to what's confirmed.[2]

Produce Basket

The herbsandharvest:empty_basket is the one mod-made recipe in the sources. It's a shaped crafting recipe, so you make it by hand in a crafting grid.[2]

The mod's own shaped crafting recipe for the Produce Basket.

Automating crops with the cloche

The pack adds Immersive Engineering cloche recipes for the mod's crops. These recipes are added by the pack and don't come from Mama's Herbs and Harvest. Each one takes a seed plus dirt and gives you the harvest along with the seed again.[2]

Many of the cloche recipes give you the crop itself, such as Radish, Tomato, Strawberry and Broccoli. The same pattern covers Asparagus, Blueberry, Rye and Squash.[2]

Herbs work a little differently. Their cloche recipes give you the fresh herb item instead of a crop, for example Fresh Thyme, Fresh Mint and Fresh Bay Leaf. The seed comes back as an output here too.[2]

Here are two examples, one crop and one herb, so you can see exactly what the pack uses.[2]

2× RadishAdded by the pack

Cloche (immersiveengineering)

Radish in the cloche, a recipe added by the pack.

2× Fresh ThymeAdded by the pack

How do you progress through Mama's Herbs and Harvest?

2 parts

The sources for this pack don't show any formal tiers for Mama's Herbs and Harvest. What they do show is one clear pack change: cloche recipes added for the mod's crops, berries and herbs.[2]

Cloche farming

The pack adds Immersive Engineering cloche recipes for the mod's plants. Each one takes the plant's seeds plus dirt, and gives you the harvest item and the seeds back. That means one batch of seeds can keep a farm going.[2]

Vegetables like Tomato, Cabbage and Pineapple are covered. So are berries like Strawberry and Blueberry, grains like Barley and Rye, and herbs like Fresh Basil, Fresh Mint and Fresh Thyme.[2]

Here's the cloche recipe for tomatoes. The other plants follow the same pattern, each with its own seeds and harvest item.[2]

2× TomatoAdded by the pack

Cloche (immersiveengineering)

Recipe id: immersiveengineering:kjs/47yiohzkxw2lv9vf2vb082g80

Pack-added cloche recipe: tomato seeds and dirt give you a tomato and the seeds back.

Produce Basket

The herbsandharvest:empty_basket (shown in game as Produce Basket) uses the mod's own shaped crafting recipe, which the sources don't mark as changed by the pack.[2]

Empty BasketMod recipe

Crafting Shaped

4 × Bamboo

Recipe id: herbsandharvest:empty_basket

This is the mod's own recipe for the Produce Basket.

Unverified The sources here don't show any quest chapter or in-mod guidebook that covers this mod, so there is no quest-guided tier order to describe. Check the pack's quest book in game if you want to see whether it mentions the mod.

How does Mama's Herbs and Harvest work with other mods?

3 parts

In this pack, the clearest link between Mama's Herbs and Harvest and another mod is through recipes from the merrymaking namespace. Your herb and crop harvests become ingredients for prepared foods and platters. Every connection I could confirm is a shapeless crafting recipe, so you don't need a specific layout, just the right items in the grid.[2]

Cooked dishes

The Latke uses Onion from this mod, and the Sweet Potato Pie uses Sweet Potato. They also take common vanilla items: Egg, Wheat and Potato for the latke, and Milk Bucket, Sugar, Egg and Wheat for the pie.[2]

Trays and platters

The Harvest Tray is made with a Wood Tray, and the Stuffed Poultry Dinner is made with a Quartz Platter. Both recipes use Corn and Sweet Potato from this mod, mixed with vanilla vegetables such as Carrot, Beetroot and Potato.[2]

Crafting Shapeless

Tip: Sweet Potato shows up in the pie, the harvest tray and the poultry dinner, so it's worth growing a good supply of it. Corn is needed for both the tray and the dinner.[2]
