Compact Machines is a mod in All the Mons 1.3.0, where it is version 7.0.81. Adds one simple game mechanic: Small rooms inside of blocks. It basically gives you the ability to build your contraptions inside of a single block. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Compact Machines?

1 part

Compact Machines lets you step inside a block and into a tiny pocket dimension of its own. You place a Compact Machine, then enter it with the Personal Shrinking Device. The size of the space inside depends on the machine's recipe and ranges from 5x5x5 to 45x45x45.[1]

A few rules to know before you jump in. You can't break the walls of the Compact Machine from inside. To get back out, right click with the Personal Shrinking Device.[1]

The pack includes Compact Machines 7.0.81 for NeoForge, and it has been in the pack since 0.3.0-beta or earlier.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The quest "Compact Machines" quest is in the Building Tips chapter, which is chapter 3 of 70 in the book. Its task is to get the Personal Shrinking Device.[1]

It comes right after "Paxel" quest, which in turn follows "Tools!" quest and the chapter's starting quest "Building Tips!" quest. So the path to it runs from the chapter's intro, through the tools quests, to Paxel, and then to Compact Machines.[1]

Another quest hangs off the same Paxel quest: "Building Gadgets" quest. Of the quests shown to me, none comes after Compact Machines. 30 of the chapter's 63 quests weren't visible, so check the quest book itself to see whether anything follows it.[1]

How do you get started with Compact Machines?

6 parts

Compact Machines lets you place a machine block in the world and step inside a pocket dimension. The crafting order below matters, because each item feeds the next one.[3]

In the quest book this is "Compact Machines" quest, in the Building Tips chapter (chapter 3 of 70). It comes after the Paxel quest and asks you for the Personal Shrinking Device.[1]

The order to craft things

  1. Craft Compact Machine Wall. One craft gives you 8 walls, and every machine recipe in the pack uses them.[4]
  2. Craft one Atom Shrinking Module and one Atom Enlarging Module. The device needs both, and so does every machine recipe in the pack.[4]
  3. Craft the Personal Shrinking Device. It is your key: you use it on a machine to get in, and right click with it to get back out.[1][3][4]
  4. Craft a machine (New Machine), place it in the world, then use the device on it to go inside.[3][4]

Hold on to this one. The game describes it as the way to enter a compact space: you use it on a machine.[3]

Your first machine

The pack adds its own machine recipes: tiny, small, normal, large, giant and colossal, plus a farming recipe and a soaryn recipe. Each one needs both modules and the walls from the steps above. Here is the tiny one.[4]

A pack-added recipe for the tiny machine.

The quest book says the size of the room depends on the recipe, from 5x5x5 up to 45x45x45. The sources here don't say which recipe gives which size, so check the machine in-game before you build something big.[1][4]

Getting around inside

  • Place the machine, then use the device on it to enter.[1][3]
  • To leave, right click with the device. There is also a Quick-Exit Compact Machine keybind in the controls.[1][3]
  • You can't break the machine's walls.[1]
Tip: Make the walls first, since every machine recipe in the pack needs them. Start with the tiny machine to learn how entering and leaving works before you move on to a bigger one.[4]

How does Compact Machines work?

4 parts

Compact Machines is all about pocket dimensions. You craft a machine and place it in the world, then use a Personal Shrinking Device (the PSD) on it to step inside. The room you land in is bound to that machine, and the biome in there is called Compact Machine.[3]

Getting the parts

The PSD is your key to every room. It is built from the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module, plus some other parts. Those modules and the Compact Machine Wall are all mod recipes, so they work as the mod intends. Here are the recipes as they stand in this pack.[4]

Machine sizes

Every machine you craft is the same item, New Machine. What changes is the room template stored on it, and the pack's own recipes decide which template you get. The pack also sets a colour for each one. All the machine recipes here are added by the pack, not taken from the mod.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]

The pack defines these room sizes (width, height and depth):[13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]

  • Tiny: 3 x 3 x 3.[20]
  • Small: 5 x 5 x 5.[18]
  • Normal: 7 x 7 x 7.[17]
  • Large: 9 x 9 x 9.[16]
  • Giant: 11 x 11 x 11.[15]
  • Colossal: 13 x 13 x 13.[13]
  • Farming: 21 wide, 11 high and 21 deep, with a grass block floor already in place.[14]
  • Soaryn: 45 x 45 x 45, the biggest room in the pack.[19]

Here is how each machine is crafted. They go from the smallest room up to the colossal one, followed by the Farming and Soaryn machines.[4]

The machine recipes unlock once you have a wall in your inventory, or when the recipe is unlocked some other way. The mod's "Foundations" advancement is about obtaining a breakable wall block.[3][21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28]

Moving in and out

The mod adds two keybinds in its own category: Quick-Exit Compact Machine, and Open Room Upgrade Screen. Quick-Exit gets you out of a room fast.[3]

The mod also has game rules that control what happens at the room edges. They cover whether survival, creative and spectator players may go out of bounds, whether out-of-bounds players take damage, and whether leaving a room damages your shrinking device. Check these rules if you run into trouble.[3]

Tip: If you want to know which room a machine leads to, the mod has info text that says a machine at a position is bound to a room of a given size at a given position. It also reports which room a player is inside. Jade has options for bound machines and for showing machine owners.[3]

Room templates can also generate structures when a room is created. The tooltip says "Generates %s structures upon room creation." The sources don't show which templates in this pack do this.[3]

What isn't confirmed

Unverified How items, fluids and power move in and out of a room, and how to automate with machines, can't be confirmed from the sources available for this pack. There is no in-jar guidebook, no config file for this mod in the pack, and no usable documentation, so treat anything you have heard about it as unverified.

How do you progress through Compact Machines?

3 parts

Compact Machines lets you step inside a small pocket dimension. In this pack's quest book, the quest "Compact Machines" quest sits in the Building Tips chapter, right after the Paxel quest. It asks you to craft the Personal Shrinking Device. Place a machine, use the device to enter it, and right click the device again to leave. You can't break a machine's walls.[1]

Start with the basics

Before any machine, you need the parts every tier shares: Compact Machine Wall, Atom Shrinking Module, Atom Enlarging Module and the Personal Shrinking Device. These four are the mod's own recipes, and the pack hasn't changed them.[4]

The machine tiers

Every machine comes out as the same item, New Machine, and its recipe decides which room size you get. The pack added all the machine recipes. They all build on the same base parts (a wall plus both modules), so what changes from tier to tier is the extra material, which each recipe block below shows.[4]

Each machine recipe's advancement in the pack checks for a Compact Machine Wall in your inventory, so picking one up is what unlocks them.[21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28]

  • Tiny: a 3x3x3 room.[20]
  • Small: a 5x5x5 room.[18]
  • Normal: a 7x7x7 room.[17]
  • Large: a 9x9x9 room.[16]
  • Giant: an 11x11x11 room.[15]
  • Colossal: a 13x13x13 room.[13]
  • Farming: a 21x21x11 room with a grass block floor. It sits outside the cube-size ladder.[14]
  • Soaryn: the biggest, a 45x45x45 room.[19]
Watch out: The quest text says machines range from 5x5x5 to 45x45x45, but the pack's room template for the tiny tier lists 3x3x3. Trust the template sizes above.[1][20]

Which All the Mons quests use Compact Machines?

2 parts

Compact Machines has one quest of its own in this pack, and it sits in the Building Tips chapter. That is chapter 3 of 70 in the quest book, and it holds 63 quests.[1]

Building Tips: the Compact Machines quest

The quest "Compact Machines" quest asks you to hand in the Personal Shrinking Device. It comes right after the Paxel quest, so you reach it by working down the Tools branch of the chapter.[1]

  1. Start with "Building Tips!" quest, the opening quest of the chapter.[1]
  2. Next is "Tools!" quest, which asks for a stick.[1]
  3. Then comes "Paxel" quest. The quest text describes a Paxel as a pickaxe, axe and shovel in one tool.[1]
  4. Finally you get "Compact Machines" quest, which asks for the Personal Shrinking Device.[1]

The quest text explains the basics. You place a Compact Machine, then enter it with the Personal Shrinking Device. The size depends on the recipe and ranges from 5x5x5 to 45x45x45. You can't break the machine's walls, and you leave by right-clicking the Personal Shrinking Device.[1]

Paxel also leads to other building quests, so you can do those alongside this one: "Building Gadgets" quest, "Construction Sticks" quest, "Quarries and Mines" quest and a quest in "Building Tips".[1]

Applied Energistics 2: a mention only

Compact Machines also gets a name-drop in the Applied Energistics 2 chapter, which is in the Storage group (chapter 31 of 70, with 73 quests). The quest "Spatial IO" quest says AE2's way of storing whole structures in storage cells is not too different from the Compact Machines mod. It does not ask you to get anything from Compact Machines.[29]

After Spatial IO, the chapter continues with a quest in "Applied Energistics 2". That one leads on to a quest in "Applied Energistics 2" and "Spatial Storage Cell" quest. Eight quests in that chapter are not covered here, so check the quest book for them.[29]

Which Compact Machines config options matter?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.2 guide

The only Compact Machines option I can confirm for this pack is in the client config file, so this section is short.[30]

In this pack, enableRoomPreviews is set to false. The file describes it as enabling the room preview when you open a bound machine UI, so in this pack you won't get that preview.[30]

It is a client-side option, so it only affects your own game. If you want the preview, change the value to true in config/compactmachines-client.toml.[30]

Unverified The sources don't show the mod's default for this option, so I can't say whether the pack changed it. No other Compact Machines config values are confirmed here.
