What is Compact Machines?

Compact Machines is included in this pack as version 7.0.22, the NeoForge build. It has been part of the pack since version 2.21 or earlier, so it's a long-standing member of the mod list.[1]

The pack's quest book gives you one clear starting point. A quest in the building_tips chapter, a quest in "?", asks you to obtain the Personal Shrinking Device. It unlocks after another quest in the same chapter, so the pack treats Compact Machines as a building-oriented mod.[2]

Unverified The sources don't describe what the mod does in detail, who it suits best, or where it sits in the pack's progression. There is no in-jar guidebook to confirm any of that, and this pack's quest data doesn't show a place for the mod on the ATM Star path. Treat those points as unconfirmed until they are checked in game.

Tip: Start with the Personal Shrinking Device quest in the building_tips chapter. It's the only in-pack pointer to this mod that I can confirm.[2]

How do you get started with Compact Machines?

4 parts

Compact Machines lets you craft a machine, place it in the world, and then step inside it to reach a pocket dimension. You get in with the Personal Shrinking Device. The order below takes you from nothing to your first room.[3]

Step one: make the two modules

Start with the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. They come first because the pack's machine recipes and the Personal Shrinking Device recipe all use both of them.[4]

Step two: craft a wall

The Compact Machine Wall is the other shared ingredient. Every machine recipe in the pack needs one, along with the shrinking and enlarging modules.[4]

Step three: craft your first machine

In this pack the machine recipes are added by the pack. There are recipes for tiny, small, normal, large, giant and colossal, plus farming and soaryn variants. Each recipe's result is listed as the New Machine item.[4]

This is the tiny recipe. The pack adds one recipe per room size, so pick the one you want.

Once it is crafted, place the machine in the world. Machines are used to make pocket dimensions, and you enter one with the Personal Shrinking Device.[3]

Last step: get the Personal Shrinking Device

The Personal Shrinking Device (PSD) is how you actually go inside. Use it on a placed machine to enter the compact space. Its recipe uses both modules, so you already have the main parts.[3][4]

The pack's quest book covers this too. In the building_tips chapter, quest a quest in "?" is completed by obtaining the Personal Shrinking Device.[2]

Tip: The mod's tooltips tell you to hold shift for details. The mod can also tell you which room a machine is bound to and which player is inside which room.[3]

How does Compact Machines work?

3 parts

Compact Machines is all about pocket dimensions. You craft a machine, place it in the world, and then step inside it with the Personal Shrinking Device. The room you enter is your own compact space.[3]

Getting inside a machine

  1. Craft a machine and place it in the world.[3]
  2. Use the Personal Shrinking Device (PSD) on the placed machine to enter the compact space.[3]

The mod also shows you where you are. Each placed machine is bound to a room of a particular size at a particular position, and the mod can tell you which player is inside which room. Room templates can also generate structures when a room is created, and their tooltip tells you so. Holding shift on a tooltip shows extra details.[3]

The mod has two advancements about this. One is for getting a Personal Shrinking Device. The other, "how did you get here", asks which machine the player is in.[3]

Crafting the building blocks

Everything starts with a few components: the Compact Machine Wall, the Atom Shrinking Module and the Atom Enlarging Module. The recipes below show how each one is made.[4]

Machine recipes in this pack

The pack adds its own recipe for each machine variant: tiny, small, normal, large, giant, colossal, soaryn and farming. Each recipe produces the New Machine item. Each one uses the wall and both modules, plus one extra ingredient that differs from recipe to recipe. These recipes are marked as added by the pack, so don't assume they match the mod's defaults.[4]

How do you progress through Compact Machines?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Compact Machines lets you enter a tiny pocket dimension from a placed machine. In this pack, the path starts with the quest a quest in "?", which sits in the Building Tips chapter right after the Paxel quest. Its task is to get a Personal Shrinking Device.[5]

First: the Personal Shrinking Device

The Personal Shrinking Device is your key to every machine. After you place a Compact Machine, you use the device to enter it, and you right click with it to get back out. The quest also warns that you can't break a machine's walls.[5]

The device needs both an Atom Enlarging Module and a Atom Shrinking Module. The recipes for the device and both modules are the mod's own, so the pack hasn't changed them.[6]

Next: Compact Machine Walls

Every machine tier uses the Compact Machine Wall. Its recipe is the mod's own, not a pack change.[6]

Then: pick your machine tier

The pack adds its own recipe for each machine tier, and each one produces New Machine. Every tier recipe uses the same base: an enlarging module, a shrinking module and a wall. What sets the tier apart is the one extra item in the recipe. The quest says the machine's size depends on the recipe and ranges from 5x5x5 to 45x45x45.[5][6]

The tier recipes are named tiny, small, normal, large, giant, colossal, farming and soaryn. The renders below show the exact in-pack recipe for each one.[6]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use Compact Machines?

1 part

Compact Machines only shows up in one quest chapter in this pack: "building_tips". It's a small footprint, so there isn't a long questline to follow here.[2]

Building Tips chapter

The chapter has a single quest involving the mod, a quest in "?". It has no title in the quest file. Its task is to obtain the Personal Shrinking Device, so you just need to have one in your inventory to complete it.[2]

This quest comes after another quest in the same chapter, with the ID 22D2CFDDB06C720C. That quest isn't part of the provided sources, so you'll need to finish it before this one unlocks.[2]

Unverified The reward for the Personal Shrinking Device quest, and how to craft the device in this pack, are not confirmed by the available sources. Check the in-game quest book for the reward.

What changed in Compact Machines between versions?

The sources for Compact Machines only cover a small slice of its history in this pack, so this section is short on purpose.[1][7]

  • Compact Machines was already in All the Mods 10 by version 2.21 or earlier. The exact release where it first appeared isn't confirmed.[1]
  • All the Mods 10 2.28 updated Compact Machines from 7.0.14 to 7.0.22.[7]
  • All the Mods 10 4.5 ships Compact Machines 7.0.22 (file compactmachines-neoforge-7.0.22.jar), so it is still on the version it was bumped to in 2.28.[1][7]

Unverified What actually changed between Compact Machines 7.0.14 and 7.0.22 (new features, fixes or balance changes) is unverified. The sources here include no stored changelogs for the jars shipped in the pack, so they don't show what that update did in-game.
