What is Colorful Hearts?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Colorful Hearts is a small client-side mod that changes how your health bar looks. Vanilla stacks extra rows of hearts once you pass 10 hearts of health or absorption. This mod replaces that with a single row, and each "layer" of health or absorption gets its own heart color.[1]

It also adds half-heart background textures. If you only have half a heart of absorption, the black bordered background covers just the left half of the icon, so it no longer looks like something is missing on the right.[1]

This pack ships Colorful Hearts 10.5.9, built for NeoForge 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[2]

Who it's for

It's for anyone who ends up with a lot of health or absorption and wants a tidy, readable bar instead of towers of hearts. Because it's client-side, it only changes what you see on your own screen. You can customize the colors with a list of hex #RRGGBB values in the mod's config file.[1]

Compatibility notes

The mod lists built-in support for several other mods. AppleSkin shows the potential health restored by the food you're holding. Raised moves the hearts correctly. Farmer's Delight gets a working comfort overlay, The Undergarden a working virulence overlay, and Eidolon:Repraised a working chilled overlay.[1]

Watch out: If you use Overflowing Bars for numerical heart-row displays, the Colorful Hearts project page says you must set allowLayers for hearts to false in that mod. Both mods touch the same vanilla code, which can cause crashes or weird behavior. Scaling Health is not supported at all for the same reason.[1]

Unverified No in-pack guidebook, quests or ATM Star path entry for Colorful Hearts could be confirmed, so this guide does not describe a progression stage for it. Treat it as a quality-of-life display mod that works from the moment you start playing.

How do you get started with Colorful Hearts?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: there's nothing to craft or unlock to get going with Colorful Hearts. It's a simple client-side mod, so it works on your own game's display and doesn't add gameplay content you need to build up to.[1]

What changes on your screen

In vanilla Minecraft, once you have more than 10 hearts of health or absorption, the game stacks extra rows of hearts on your HUD. Colorful Hearts replaces that renderer. Each row of health or absorption is shown as a differently colored heart instead, so your health stays in a single row.[1]

It also adds half-heart background textures. If you only have half a heart of absorption, the black bordered background covers just the left half of the icon instead of leaving a black gap on the right as if something were missing.[1]

Your first steps

  1. Play normally and watch your health bar as you gain extra hearts or absorption. The color of the heart tells you which row you're on.[1]
  2. If you want different colors, change them in the mod's config file. It takes a list of hex #RRGGBB values.[1]
  3. If you run other HUD mods, check the compatibility list below before you start tweaking things.[1]

Compatibility to know about

The mod lists built-in support for AppleSkin, Raised, Farmer's Delight, The Undergarden, Overflowing Bars and Eidolon: Repraised. For example, with AppleSkin you get a preview of how much health your held food would restore, and with Farmer's Delight the comfort status effect overlay works.[1]

Watch out: If you use Overflowing Bars alongside Colorful Hearts, the Colorful Hearts project page says you must disable that mod's own heart rendering by setting allowLayers for hearts to false. Both mods touch the same part of vanilla code, which can cause crashes or odd behavior.[1]
Tip: If something looks wrong with the hearts, the author asks you to report it to Colorful Hearts rather than to the other mod, since it's most likely caused by Colorful Hearts.[1]

Unverified Whether this pack changes the default heart colors, and whether the pack includes every mod from the compatibility list, could not be confirmed from the available sources. This guide also found no in-pack recipes or quests for this mod, so there are no recipe steps to show here.

How does Colorful Hearts work?

4 parts

Colorful Hearts has no machines, no power and no items to craft. It is a purely client-side mod that replaces the vanilla heart renderer, so everything it does happens on your HUD and only for you. Nothing here changes how much health you actually have, only how that health is drawn.[1]

One row instead of many

Normally Minecraft adds another row of hearts every time the player has more than 10 hearts of health or absorption. Colorful Hearts drops that stacking and instead uses a colored heart to represent each row of health and absorption, so your HUD stays a single row no matter how much bonus health you pick up.[1]

The mod also adds half heart background textures. If you only have half a heart of absorption, the right half no longer gets a black background that makes it look like something is missing; the black bordered background covers just the left half of the heart icon.[1]

How the colors are chosen

Health and absorption each get their own list of colors, written as hexadecimal RGB values in the '#RRGGBB' format. Each entry in a list is the color for one row of 10 hearts, and the default red row is not counted, so the first color in the list is what you see once you pass that first red row.[1][3]

This pack ships both lists with ten entries each, which covers a lot of bonus health before the colors run out. Health uses health.colors and absorption uses absorption.colors. Both are left at the mod's own defaults here, so what you see in game is the stock palette: health starts at orange #F06E14 and runs through #F5DC23, #2DB928, #1EAFBE, #7346E1, #FA7DEB, #EB375A, #FF8278, #AAFFFA and #EBEBFF, while absorption starts at #E1FA9B and runs through #A0FFAF, #AAFFFA, #AACDFF, #D7B4FF, #FAA5FF, #FFB4B4, #FFAA7D, #D7F0FF and #EBFFFA.[3]

Tip: Because the colors are just a list of hex values in a config file, you can reorder them or swap in your own palette without touching anything else in the pack. It is a client-side change, so it only affects your own HUD.[1][3]

Status effect overlays

Freezing, poison and wither each get their own color settings, split between health and absorption. For absorption, each of these takes two alternating colors: absorption.frozenColors is set to #90D136 and #36D183, absorption.poisonedColors to #BFF230 and #7AA15A, and absorption.witheredColors to #787061 and #73625C. All three match the mod defaults in this pack.[3]

The health versions accept a single color instead if you want the vanilla frozen, poisoned or withered heart look, and that is exactly how the pack leaves them: health.frozenColors is #3E70E6, health.poisonedColors is #739B00 and health.witheredColors is #0F0F0F, one entry each and all at the mod defaults.[3]

There are also two toggles for whether vanilla hearts are rendered at all, health.vanillaHearts and absorption.vanillaHearts. Both are true in this pack, matching the mod default.[3]

Playing nice with other HUD mods

Colorful Hearts touches the same part of vanilla code that other health-bar mods do, so it ships with explicit compatibility for a handful of them. It supports AppleSkin's visualization of the health a held food item would restore, the comfort status effect overlay from Farmer's Delight, the virulence overlay from The Undergarden, and Eidolon: Repraised' chilled overlay, with its ethereal health rendering normally after the health and absorption hearts.[1]

Watch out: Scaling Health is not supported, because both mods touch the same vanilla code and that results in crashes or weird behaviour. If you insist on running it, disable any kind of custom heart rendering on its side, and expect no support for the results.[1]

The practical takeaway: if your hearts ever render oddly, the mod author asks that you report it to Colorful Hearts rather than the other mod, since it is most likely the cause.[1]

Which Colorful Hearts config options matter?

3 parts

Good news first: this pack ships Colorful Hearts with every config value left at the mod default, so nothing here has been retuned behind your back. That means the config is purely a cosmetic playground: tweak it to taste, or leave it alone and get the stock look.[3]

All of the settings live in one file, and every color option takes a list of hexadecimal RGB values written in the '#RRGGBB' format.[1][3]

Health row colors

health.colors sets the color used for every 10 hearts of health, not counting the default red first row. The pack uses the default list of ten colors: #F06E14, #F5DC23, #2DB928, #1EAFBE, #7346E1, #FA7DEB, #EB375A, #FF8278, #AAFFFA and #EBEBFF. If you want your second health row to be something other than orange, this is the line to edit.[3]

The status-effect variants are separate. health.poisonedColors is #739B00, health.witheredColors is #0F0F0F, and health.frozenColors is #3E70E6, all pack values matching the mod defaults. These normally take two alternating colors, but a single color is allowed if you want the vanilla-style effect heart.[3]

Absorption row colors

Absorption gets its own matching set. absorption.colors covers every 10 hearts of absorption with the pastel default list: #E1FA9B, #A0FFAF, #AAFFFA, #AACDFF, #D7B4FF, #FAA5FF, #FFB4B4, #FFAA7D, #D7F0FF and #EBFFFA.[3]

Turning the hearts off

health.vanillaHearts and absorption.vanillaHearts control whether vanilla hearts are rendered. Both are set to true in this pack, which is also the mod default.[3]

Tip: Colorful Hearts is a client side mod, so these settings are yours alone: changing them on a server won't affect anyone else's HUD, and each player can pick their own palette.[1]
Watch out: Because this mod replaces the vanilla heart renderer, any weirdness with your health or absorption bar is most likely coming from Colorful Hearts rather than the other mod you suspect. Report it to Colorful Hearts first.[1]

What changed in Colorful Hearts between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10 2.12 ships Colorful Hearts 10.3.8 for NeoForge on 1.21.1. The mod was already in the pack by All the Mods 10 0.32 or earlier. The changes below come from the mod's own changelogs, not from the pack's.[4]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Colorful Hearts were available, so anything the pack itself changed about this mod across releases is unverified.

Latest releases

The mod's changelogs are running lists of recent commits, so each release mostly repeats the one before it. Comparing them shows what was added at each step.[5][6][7][8]

  • 10.3.8, the version in the pack, adds a fix for issue 47 and a README typo fix on top of the 10.3.7 list.[5][6]
  • 10.3.7 adds a Turkish localization (tr_tr.json) compared with the 10.3.5 changelog.[6][7]
  • 10.3.5 adds a Traditional Chinese translation (zh_tw.json), a change that sets the config UI's new element supplier to null, and a combined publish task, compared with the 10.3.4 changelog.[7][8]

Changes listed since 10.3.4

The 10.3.4 changelog and the later ones that repeat it include several changes you can notice in play:[8]

  • Support for the Farmer's Delight comfort overlay was added back.[8]
  • The config option for colors was improved, and hex strings are converted to integers when a value changes.[8]
  • Breaking config changes on NeoForge were fixed.[8]
  • A bug where the config was overwritten on game start was fixed.[8]
  • The config UI now resets a sprite back to null if it is missing.[8]
  • Support was added for the opaque flag from the mod's API, and OverlayHeart can now have no absorption or health hearts.[8]
  • A bug where the armor bar was not moved correctly on Fabric was fixed. That is a Fabric fix, and this pack uses the NeoForge build.[4][8]

The rest of the listed commits are behind-the-scenes work: dependencies updated to 1.21.1, mixin setup changes, a night-config update on Fabric and build tweaks.[5][8]
