What is Colorful Hearts?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Colorful Hearts is a small client-side mod that changes how your health bar looks. Vanilla stacks extra rows of hearts once you pass 10 hearts of health or absorption. This mod replaces that with a single row, and each "layer" of health or absorption gets its own heart color.[1]

It also adds half-heart background textures. If you only have half a heart of absorption, the black bordered background covers just the left half of the icon, so it no longer looks like something is missing on the right.[1]

This pack ships Colorful Hearts 10.5.9, built for NeoForge 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[2]

Who it's for

It's for anyone who ends up with a lot of health or absorption and wants a tidy, readable bar instead of towers of hearts. Because it's client-side, it only changes what you see on your own screen. You can customize the colors with a list of hex #RRGGBB values in the mod's config file.[1]

Compatibility notes

The mod lists built-in support for several other mods. AppleSkin shows the potential health restored by the food you're holding. Raised moves the hearts correctly. Farmer's Delight gets a working comfort overlay, The Undergarden a working virulence overlay, and Eidolon:Repraised a working chilled overlay.[1]

Watch out: If you use Overflowing Bars for numerical heart-row displays, the Colorful Hearts project page says you must set allowLayers for hearts to false in that mod. Both mods touch the same vanilla code, which can cause crashes or weird behavior. Scaling Health is not supported at all for the same reason.[1]

Unverified No in-pack guidebook, quests or ATM Star path entry for Colorful Hearts could be confirmed, so this guide does not describe a progression stage for it. Treat it as a quality-of-life display mod that works from the moment you start playing.

How do you get started with Colorful Hearts?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: there's nothing to craft or unlock to get going with Colorful Hearts. It's a simple client-side mod, so it works on your own game's display and doesn't add gameplay content you need to build up to.[1]

What changes on your screen

In vanilla Minecraft, once you have more than 10 hearts of health or absorption, the game stacks extra rows of hearts on your HUD. Colorful Hearts replaces that renderer. Each row of health or absorption is shown as a differently colored heart instead, so your health stays in a single row.[1]

It also adds half-heart background textures. If you only have half a heart of absorption, the black bordered background covers just the left half of the icon instead of leaving a black gap on the right as if something were missing.[1]

Your first steps

  1. Play normally and watch your health bar as you gain extra hearts or absorption. The color of the heart tells you which row you're on.[1]
  2. If you want different colors, change them in the mod's config file. It takes a list of hex #RRGGBB values.[1]
  3. If you run other HUD mods, check the compatibility list below before you start tweaking things.[1]

Compatibility to know about

The mod lists built-in support for AppleSkin, Raised, Farmer's Delight, The Undergarden, Overflowing Bars and Eidolon: Repraised. For example, with AppleSkin you get a preview of how much health your held food would restore, and with Farmer's Delight the comfort status effect overlay works.[1]

Watch out: If you use Overflowing Bars alongside Colorful Hearts, the Colorful Hearts project page says you must disable that mod's own heart rendering by setting allowLayers for hearts to false. Both mods touch the same part of vanilla code, which can cause crashes or odd behavior.[1]
Tip: If something looks wrong with the hearts, the author asks you to report it to Colorful Hearts rather than to the other mod, since it's most likely caused by Colorful Hearts.[1]

Unverified Whether this pack changes the default heart colors, and whether the pack includes every mod from the compatibility list, could not be confirmed from the available sources. This guide also found no in-pack recipes or quests for this mod, so there are no recipe steps to show here.

How does Colorful Hearts work?

3 parts

Colorful Hearts has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids to worry about. It is a purely client-side mod that changes one thing: how your health and absorption hearts are drawn on the HUD.[1]

One row instead of many

Vanilla stacks a new row of hearts on top of the old one every time you go past 10 hearts of health or absorption, so a well-buffed character ends up with a wall of hearts covering the bottom of the screen. Colorful Hearts replaces that renderer entirely. Instead of adding rows, it keeps a single row and gives each row of health or absorption its own color, so you read your current total from the heart color rather than by counting stacked lines.[1]

The colors themselves come from a config file that takes a list of hex values in #RRGGBB form, which is how you would retheme the rows if you want a different palette.[1]

Half-heart backgrounds

The mod also adds half heart background textures. In vanilla, a lone half heart of absorption still sits on a full black heart-shaped background, so the right half looks like something is missing. With Colorful Hearts, the black bordered background only covers the left half of the icon, matching the half heart that is actually there.[1]

How it plays with other mods

Because the mod takes over the vanilla heart renderer, it has to cooperate with anything else that draws on the same part of the HUD. It ships explicit compatibility for a number of mods so their overlays and effects keep working instead of being overwritten.[1]

  • AppleSkin: the preview of how much health the food you are holding could restore still shows up on the colored hearts.[1]
  • Farmer's Delight: a working overlay for the comfort status effect.[1]
  • The Undergarden: a working overlay for the virulence status effect.[1]
Watch out: Two mods drawing hearts at once is the main failure mode here. If you add another mod that does its own custom heart rendering, both mods end up touching the same vanilla code, which can cause crashes or weird behaviour, disable the other mod's heart rendering if you want them side by side.[1]
Tip: If your hearts ever render oddly alongside another mod, the author asks that you report it to Colorful Hearts rather than the other mod, since it is most likely the cause. Compatibility can often be added once it is known about.[1]

Unverified The exact location and default contents of the color config file in this pack, and whether the pack changes any of the default heart colors, could not be confirmed from the available sources.

Which Colorful Hearts config options matter?

Colorful Hearts is a client-side mod, so its settings only change how your own health and absorption bars look. The main thing you can customize is the heart colors. The mod reads them from a config file that accepts a list of hex #RRGGBB values, and each color stands for one row of health or absorption.[1]

Each color in that list replaces what vanilla would show as an extra row of hearts. That's how the mod squeezes everything into a single row.[1]

Unverified This pack's actual Colorful Hearts config values aren't available, so I can't say whether the pack changed any color or other setting from the mod default. Treat everything above as the mod's general behavior. Check the config file in your own instance to see what your pack uses.

What changed in Colorful Hearts between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10 0.50 ships Colorful Hearts 10.3.5, the NeoForge build for Minecraft 1.21.1. The mod has been in the pack since 0.32 or earlier. The pack changelogs have no entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs.[3]

New in 10.3.5

Compared with the 10.3.4 changelog, the 10.3.5 one adds three entries:[4][5]

  • A Traditional Chinese translation was added.[4]
  • The config UI's new element supplier is now set to null.[4]
  • A combined publish task was added, which is a build change and not something you will notice in game.[4]

Changes carried over from 10.3.4

The 10.3.5 changelog also still lists the earlier work from 10.3.4. These are the entries that matter most to players:[4][5]

  • Support for the Farmer's Delight comfort overlay was added back.[4]
  • The config option for colors was improved, and a hex string is now converted to an integer when the value changes.[4]
  • Breaking config changes in NeoForge were fixed, which is the loader this pack uses.[3][4]
  • A bug where the config was overwritten on game start was fixed.[5]
  • In the config UI, a sprite that is missing is now reset back to null.[4]
  • Support for the opaque flag from the API was added, and OverlayHeart can now have no absorption or health hearts.[5]
  • The armor bar not being moved correctly was fixed, but the changelog lists this as a Fabric fix, so it does not apply to the NeoForge build in this pack.[3][4]

The rest of the changelog is internal housekeeping, such as dependencies updated to 1.21.1 and mixin tweaks. None of it changes how the mod plays.[4][5]
