What is Colorful Hearts?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Colorful Hearts is a small client-side mod that changes how your health bar looks. Vanilla stacks extra rows of hearts once you pass 10 hearts of health or absorption. This mod replaces that with a single row, and each "layer" of health or absorption gets its own heart color.[1]

It also adds half-heart background textures. If you only have half a heart of absorption, the black bordered background covers just the left half of the icon, so it no longer looks like something is missing on the right.[1]

This pack ships Colorful Hearts 10.5.9, built for NeoForge 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[2]

Who it's for

It's for anyone who ends up with a lot of health or absorption and wants a tidy, readable bar instead of towers of hearts. Because it's client-side, it only changes what you see on your own screen. You can customize the colors with a list of hex #RRGGBB values in the mod's config file.[1]

Compatibility notes

The mod lists built-in support for several other mods. AppleSkin shows the potential health restored by the food you're holding. Raised moves the hearts correctly. Farmer's Delight gets a working comfort overlay, The Undergarden a working virulence overlay, and Eidolon:Repraised a working chilled overlay.[1]

Watch out: If you use Overflowing Bars for numerical heart-row displays, the Colorful Hearts project page says you must set allowLayers for hearts to false in that mod. Both mods touch the same vanilla code, which can cause crashes or weird behavior. Scaling Health is not supported at all for the same reason.[1]

Unverified No in-pack guidebook, quests or ATM Star path entry for Colorful Hearts could be confirmed, so this guide does not describe a progression stage for it. Treat it as a quality-of-life display mod that works from the moment you start playing.

How do you get started with Colorful Hearts?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: there's nothing to craft or unlock to get going with Colorful Hearts. It's a simple client-side mod, so it works on your own game's display and doesn't add gameplay content you need to build up to.[1]

What changes on your screen

In vanilla Minecraft, once you have more than 10 hearts of health or absorption, the game stacks extra rows of hearts on your HUD. Colorful Hearts replaces that renderer. Each row of health or absorption is shown as a differently colored heart instead, so your health stays in a single row.[1]

It also adds half-heart background textures. If you only have half a heart of absorption, the black bordered background covers just the left half of the icon instead of leaving a black gap on the right as if something were missing.[1]

Your first steps

  1. Play normally and watch your health bar as you gain extra hearts or absorption. The color of the heart tells you which row you're on.[1]
  2. If you want different colors, change them in the mod's config file. It takes a list of hex #RRGGBB values.[1]
  3. If you run other HUD mods, check the compatibility list below before you start tweaking things.[1]

Compatibility to know about

The mod lists built-in support for AppleSkin, Raised, Farmer's Delight, The Undergarden, Overflowing Bars and Eidolon: Repraised. For example, with AppleSkin you get a preview of how much health your held food would restore, and with Farmer's Delight the comfort status effect overlay works.[1]

Watch out: If you use Overflowing Bars alongside Colorful Hearts, the Colorful Hearts project page says you must disable that mod's own heart rendering by setting allowLayers for hearts to false. Both mods touch the same part of vanilla code, which can cause crashes or odd behavior.[1]
Tip: If something looks wrong with the hearts, the author asks you to report it to Colorful Hearts rather than to the other mod, since it's most likely caused by Colorful Hearts.[1]

Unverified Whether this pack changes the default heart colors, and whether the pack includes every mod from the compatibility list, could not be confirmed from the available sources. This guide also found no in-pack recipes or quests for this mod, so there are no recipe steps to show here.

How does Colorful Hearts work?

4 parts

Colorful Hearts has no machines, multiblocks or automation to build, it is a purely client-side mod that changes how your health bar is drawn. It replaces the vanilla heart renderer, which stacks extra rows of hearts every time you go past 10 hearts of health or absorption, with a single row of colored hearts where the color tells you which row you are on.[1]

How the color rows work

Instead of adding rows, the mod uses a colored heart to represent each row of health and absorption, all drawn in one line. Health and absorption each have their own color list, so a buffed health pool and an absorption shield never get confused with one another.[1][3]

The colors live in a config file and are written as hexadecimal RGB values in the '#RRGGBB' format. Health rows are controlled by health.colors and absorption rows by absorption.colors. Each list holds one color per 10 hearts, not counting the default red, and this pack ships 10 colors in each list.[1][3]

This pack leaves both lists exactly at the mod's own defaults, so the palette you see here is the stock one: health steps through orange, yellow, green, cyan, purple, pink, red-pink, salmon, pale aqua and near-white, while absorption uses its own softer pastel set.[3]

Status effect hearts

Poison, wither and freezing get their own color overrides so those states still read clearly even when your hearts are tinted. Each state has a small list, and the mod alternates between two colors while the effect is active. On the health side a list can hold a single color if you want the vanilla-style flat poisoned, withered or frozen heart instead of an alternating pattern.[3]

All six of these lists are at the mod defaults in this pack. The health side uses a single color each (a blue for freezing, an olive green for poison and a near-black for wither, matching the vanilla look) while the absorption side alternates between two greens for freezing, two yellow-greens for poison and two muted browns for wither.[3]

Rendering toggles and polish

health.vanillaHearts and absorption.vanillaHearts control whether vanilla hearts are rendered. Both are set to true in this pack, which is also the mod's default.[3]

The mod also adds half-heart background textures. Normally a lone half heart of absorption sits on a full black background, making it look like something is missing on the right. With this mod the black-bordered background only covers the left half of the icon, so half hearts look intentional instead of broken.[1]

Playing nice with other HUD mods

Because it hooks the vanilla heart renderer, the mod ships explicit compatibility with several mods that touch the same part of the HUD. It shows AppleSkin's visualization of the health a currently held food item would restore, and it draws working overlays for Farmer's Delight's comfort status effect and The Undergarden's virulence status effect.[1]

Watch out: Two mods cannot safely draw hearts at once. Scaling Health is explicitly unsupported alongside this mod, because both patch the same vanilla code and that can lead to crashes or weird behavior; in general, any mod with its own custom heart rendering needs that rendering disabled.[1]
Tip: If your hearts ever look wrong while another HUD mod is installed, the heart renderer here is the likely culprit rather than the other mod, so check this mod's setup first: the author asks that these issues be reported to them rather than to the other mod.[1]

Which Colorful Hearts config options matter?

3 parts

Colorful Hearts is a client side mod that replaces the extra vanilla heart rows with a single row of colored hearts. The colors come from a config file that takes a list of hex values, so this is where you can restyle your health bar.[1]

Everything lives in config/colorfulhearts.toml, split into a health group and an absorption group. In this pack, every option in that file is set to the mod default, so the pack has not changed any value. What you see is stock Colorful Hearts.[3]

Row colors

  • health.colors holds the colors used for every 10 hearts of health, not counting the default red. The pack uses #F06E14, #F5DC23, #2DB928, #1EAFBE, #7346E1, #FA7DEB, #EB375A, #FF8278, #AAFFFA and #EBEBFF, which is the mod default.[3]
  • absorption.colors does the same for absorption. The pack uses #E1FA9B, #A0FFAF, #AAFFFA, #AACDFF, #D7B4FF, #FAA5FF, #FFB4B4, #FFAA7D, #D7F0FF and #EBFFFA, again the mod default.[3]
Tip: All colors are written as hexadecimal RGB in the #RRGGBB format. Keep that format if you edit the lists, or the values won't read correctly.[1][3]

Freezing, poison and wither colors

Each status effect has its own color option. For health, the pack uses one color per effect, and the config notes that a single color is allowed if you want the vanilla heart for that effect. For absorption, each effect uses two alternating colors. All of these match the mod defaults.[3]

Vanilla hearts toggle

Both health.vanillaHearts and absorption.vanillaHearts are set to true in the pack, the same as the mod default. The config describes the option as rendering vanilla hearts.[3]

Unverified The sources don't explain exactly how the vanilla hearts toggle interacts with the color lists, so check in game before relying on it.

What changed in Colorful Hearts between versions?

4 parts

All the Mods 10 0.51 ships Colorful Hearts 10.3.5, using the NeoForge build for 1.21.1. The mod was already in the pack by 0.32 or earlier, though the sources don't say which release first added it.[4]

I have no pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs for 10.3.4 and 10.3.5. Those two lists overlap heavily, so I can't tell you exactly which release introduced each shared entry.[5][6]

New in 10.3.5

  • A Traditional Chinese translation (zh_tw.json) was added.[5]
  • The config UI's new element supplier is now set to null.[5]
  • A combined publish task was added, which is a build-side change you won't notice in game.[5]

Config changes

  • The config option for colors was improved, and hex strings are now converted to an int when the value changes.[5][6]
  • Breaking config changes on NeoForge were fixed.[5][6]
  • In the config UI, a sprite is reset back to null if it is missing.[5][6]
  • A bug where the config was overwritten on game start was fixed. This one is listed only in the 10.3.4 changelog.[6]

HUD and compatibility

  • Support for the Farmer's Delight comfort overlay was added back.[5][6]
  • A Fabric-only fix for the armor bar not being moved correctly was made. This pack uses the NeoForge build, so it doesn't affect you.[4][5][6]
  • OverlayHeart can now have no absorption or health hearts, and support was added for the opaque flag from the API.[6]
  • Overflowing bars were removed from the CurseForge and Modrinth incompatible mods lists.[6]

Under the hood

The rest is developer housekeeping: dependencies were updated to 1.21.1, MixinExtras is now used to capture a local variable, mixin refmaps are no longer generated, and Fabric moved to night-config 3.8.0. The 10.3.4 changelog also lists replacing ExpectPlatform with regular proxy-style classes, because ExpectPlatform was randomly failing to get applied on build.[5][6]
