What is Colorful Hearts?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Colorful Hearts is a small client-side mod that changes how your health bar looks. Vanilla stacks extra rows of hearts once you pass 10 hearts of health or absorption. This mod replaces that with a single row, and each "layer" of health or absorption gets its own heart color.[1]

It also adds half-heart background textures. If you only have half a heart of absorption, the black bordered background covers just the left half of the icon, so it no longer looks like something is missing on the right.[1]

This pack ships Colorful Hearts 10.5.9, built for NeoForge 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[2]

Who it's for

It's for anyone who ends up with a lot of health or absorption and wants a tidy, readable bar instead of towers of hearts. Because it's client-side, it only changes what you see on your own screen. You can customize the colors with a list of hex #RRGGBB values in the mod's config file.[1]

Compatibility notes

The mod lists built-in support for several other mods. AppleSkin shows the potential health restored by the food you're holding. Raised moves the hearts correctly. Farmer's Delight gets a working comfort overlay, The Undergarden a working virulence overlay, and Eidolon:Repraised a working chilled overlay.[1]

Watch out: If you use Overflowing Bars for numerical heart-row displays, the Colorful Hearts project page says you must set allowLayers for hearts to false in that mod. Both mods touch the same vanilla code, which can cause crashes or weird behavior. Scaling Health is not supported at all for the same reason.[1]

Unverified No in-pack guidebook, quests or ATM Star path entry for Colorful Hearts could be confirmed, so this guide does not describe a progression stage for it. Treat it as a quality-of-life display mod that works from the moment you start playing.

How do you get started with Colorful Hearts?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Good news: there's nothing to craft or unlock to get going with Colorful Hearts. It's a simple client-side mod, so it works on your own game's display and doesn't add gameplay content you need to build up to.[1]

What changes on your screen

In vanilla Minecraft, once you have more than 10 hearts of health or absorption, the game stacks extra rows of hearts on your HUD. Colorful Hearts replaces that renderer. Each row of health or absorption is shown as a differently colored heart instead, so your health stays in a single row.[1]

It also adds half-heart background textures. If you only have half a heart of absorption, the black bordered background covers just the left half of the icon instead of leaving a black gap on the right as if something were missing.[1]

Your first steps

  1. Play normally and watch your health bar as you gain extra hearts or absorption. The color of the heart tells you which row you're on.[1]
  2. If you want different colors, change them in the mod's config file. It takes a list of hex #RRGGBB values.[1]
  3. If you run other HUD mods, check the compatibility list below before you start tweaking things.[1]

Compatibility to know about

The mod lists built-in support for AppleSkin, Raised, Farmer's Delight, The Undergarden, Overflowing Bars and Eidolon: Repraised. For example, with AppleSkin you get a preview of how much health your held food would restore, and with Farmer's Delight the comfort status effect overlay works.[1]

Watch out: If you use Overflowing Bars alongside Colorful Hearts, the Colorful Hearts project page says you must disable that mod's own heart rendering by setting allowLayers for hearts to false. Both mods touch the same part of vanilla code, which can cause crashes or odd behavior.[1]
Tip: If something looks wrong with the hearts, the author asks you to report it to Colorful Hearts rather than to the other mod, since it's most likely caused by Colorful Hearts.[1]

Unverified Whether this pack changes the default heart colors, and whether the pack includes every mod from the compatibility list, could not be confirmed from the available sources. This guide also found no in-pack recipes or quests for this mod, so there are no recipe steps to show here.

How does Colorful Hearts work?

3 parts

Colorful Hearts has no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids, it is a purely client-side mod that changes how your health bar is drawn. Everything it does happens in the heart renderer on your own game, so there is nothing to build, automate or feed with energy.[1]

How the heart rendering works

Vanilla stacks extra rows of hearts on top of each other once you have more than 10 hearts of health or absorption. Colorful Hearts replaces that renderer: instead of adding rows, it keeps a single row and uses a coloured heart to represent each row you would otherwise have had.[1]

That means a big health pool reads as one compact row whose colour tells you how many layers deep you are, rather than a wall of hearts creeping up your screen. Absorption is handled the same way, with its own colour per row.[1]

The mod also adds half heart background textures. If you only have half a heart of absorption, the black bordered background covers just the left half of the icon instead of leaving a black half-heart on the right that looks like something is missing.[1]

Colours and configuration

The heart colours are not hardcoded. The mod reads them from a config file that accepts a list of hex values in #RRGGBB form, so you can re-theme the health and absorption rows to whatever palette you like.[1]

Unverified No config file for Colorful Hearts was found in this pack, so the exact file name, key names and the colour values shipped here could not be confirmed. Treat the colours you see in game as the pack's values.

Mod compatibility

Because Colorful Hearts patches the same part of vanilla code that other heart-rendering mods touch, it ships explicit compatibility for a handful of mods. If you hit a rendering bug with your hearts, it is most likely Colorful Hearts causing it, so report it there rather than to the other mod.[1]

Watch out: Scaling Health is explicitly not supported. Both mods touch the same vanilla code and the result is crashes or weird behaviour. If you insist on running the two together, you have to disable every kind of custom heart rendering, and no support is offered for whatever happens next.[1]

Which Colorful Hearts config options matter?

1 part

Colorful Hearts is a client-side mod, so anything you change here only affects your own screen. It replaces the vanilla heart renderer, which adds more rows whenever you have more than 10 hearts of health or absorption, with a single row of colored hearts instead.[1]

Heart colors

The one option most players actually want is the heart colors. Each row of health and absorption is represented by a color, and those colors are set in a config file that accepts a list of hex RRGGBB values. If you want a different shade for your later rows, that is where you change it.[1]

The half-heart backgrounds are part of how the mod draws hearts rather than a per-row setting. When you only have half a heart of absorption, the black bordered background covers just the left half of the icon instead of leaving a gap on the right.[1]

Unverified No config file for this mod was available while writing this section, so the exact option names, their defaults, and whether this pack changed any of them could not be confirmed. Check the mod's config file in your instance folder for the current values.

What changed in Colorful Hearts between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10 2.11 ships Colorful Hearts 10.3.8, the NeoForge build for 1.21.1. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 0.32 or earlier.[3]

The changelogs here are the mod's own lists of latest changes, and each one repeats entries from the one before. I only have the lists for 10.3.4, 10.3.5, 10.3.7 and 10.3.8, so below I call out what each of those adds on top of the previous one I have.[4][5][6][7]

Recent versions

  • 10.3.8 (the version in this pack): the newest entry is a fix for issue #47, together with a README typo fix. The changelog doesn't say what #47 was about.[4]
  • 10.3.7: its list includes a Turkish translation (tr_tr.json) for 1.21.1, which the 10.3.5 list does not have.[5][6]
  • 10.3.5: its list adds a Traditional Chinese translation (zh_tw.json) and sets the config UI's new element supplier to null. It also adds a combined publish task, which is a build change you won't notice in-game.[6][7]

What the 10.3.4 changelog covers

The 10.3.4 changelog is the oldest one I have. Its list includes updated dependencies for 1.21.1 and support for the Farmer's Delight comfort overlay coming back.[7]

Several entries are about the config. They include an improved config option for colors, hex strings being converted to integers when a value changes, and a fix for breaking config changes on NeoForge. A fix for the config being overwritten on game start is listed too.[7]

Other entries cover allowing OverlayHeart to have no absorption or health hearts, and support for the opaque flag from the API. The list also includes removing overflowing bars from CurseForge and Modrinth incompatible mods, and a fix for the armor bar not being moved correctly on Fabric.[7]

Unverified The sources here show no pack changelog entries for Colorful Hearts, so what changed for this mod between individual All the Mods 10 releases is not confirmed. The pack's own changelogs are where that would be told.
