What is Sophisticated Storage?
3 parts
Sophisticated Storage lets you upgrade chests and barrels with metals to increase how much they hold. You can also add upgrades to give them extra functions. The pack's quest book describes them as just like a vanilla chest or barrel, but with a slot for a Storage Upgrade. This pack includes version 1.4.50.[1][2]
Where it sits in the quest book
The mod's quests live in the Basic Storage chapter, which has 94 quests. The chapter welcomes you to the basic ways of storing items without needing power. Next to this mod it covers vanilla storage, Functional Storage, Sophisticated Backpacks, Trash Cans and Integrated Terminals. The main quest, "Sophisticated Storage" quest, has no prerequisite shown in the sources I have, and the mod's other quests branch off it.[2]
The chest line
The metal tiers form a chain in the quest book. Each quest covers both the chest and the barrel version, and the order is:[2]
- "Copper Chest" quest comes after the main quest. The Copper Chest is not needed to make an Iron Chest, but it can save you some iron.[2]
- "Iron Chest" quest comes after the main quest and the Copper Chest, and covers the Iron Chest.[2]
- "Gold Chest" quest comes after Iron Chest, and covers the Gold Chest.[2]
- "Diamond Chest" quest comes after Gold Chest, and covers the Diamond Chest.[2]
- "Netherite Chest" quest comes after Diamond Chest. The Netherite Chest is the biggest of the chests from this mod.[2]
Networking and upgrades
- a quest in "Basic Storage" comes after the main quest. The Storage Controller lets you treat multiple storages as one big multiblock, and storages connect when placed next to it or next to others already connected, up to 14 blocks away in all directions.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" comes after the Storage Controller quest. The Storage Tool links storages to the controller wirelessly: right click the controller to bind it, then right click the storages. The range is the same 14 blocks.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" comes after both the Storage Controller and Storage Tool quests. The Storage Link connects storages that are not attached to a controller, again with 14 blocks of range.[2]
- a quest in "Basic Storage" also comes after the main quest. You need the Upgrade Base to make this mod's upgrades, and they work about the same as the Sophisticated Backpacks upgrades.[2]
The chapter has 52 more quests than the ones covered here, so check the quest book in game for the rest.[2]
How do you get started with Sophisticated Storage?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 guide
Sophisticated Storage has its own quest chapter in this pack, called "storage", and it walks you through the mod in a sensible order. The recipes here were changed by the pack, so use the recipe blocks below rather than what you remember from other packs. Here is the order I'd go in.[3][4]
Start with a basic chest or barrel
The tier recipes in this pack start from a basic Chest or Barrel, so these are your first crafts. There are wood variants, such as acacia and bamboo, and the recipe below is the acacia chest as an example. If you only want to turn a vanilla inventory into its sophisticated version, the Basic Tier Upgrade does exactly that.[4][5]

One of the wood variants. The pack also has acacia and bamboo barrel recipes.
Climb the tiers: copper and iron
The first tier quest asks for a Copper Chest or Copper Barrel ("Copper Chest" quest). The iron quest ("Iron Chest" quest) comes right after it and wants an Iron Chest or Iron Barrel. In this pack you can make iron storage from a basic one or from a copper one.[3][4]

Make an Upgrade Base
The Upgrade Base has its own quest (a quest in "Basic Storage"). It is also a component in other recipes, for example the Alchemy Upgrade.[3][4]

Connect your storage
The Storage Controller (a quest in "Basic Storage") lets you deposit items into a connected multiblock of storages and pipe items to and from it. The Storage Tool (a quest in "Basic Storage") comes after it in the quest chain.[3][5]

The Storage Link (a quest in "Basic Storage") needs both of those quests done first. It connects a separate multiblock of storages to the controller, and you use the Storage Tool to link it. The pack also lets you craft it directly from a Storage Controller.[3][4][5]

Later tiers
The rest of the chain goes gold ("Gold Chest" quest), diamond ("Diamond Chest" quest) and netherite ("Netherite Chest" quest). Each of those chests and barrels is made by upgrading the tier below it: gold from iron, diamond from gold, and netherite from diamond.[3][4]

How does Sophisticated Storage work?
5 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 guide
Sophisticated Storage is mostly about chests and barrels that grow with upgrades. The sources I have for this pack are the mod's in-game tooltips and the pack's recipe list, so this section covers what those confirm: multiblock piping, slot capacity and the main upgrade families.[4][5]
Multiblock storage and piping
The controller is the heart of a storage multiblock. It lets you deposit items into a connected multiblock of storages and pipe items to and from it.[5]
To get items in and out with pipes or other automation, you place one of three access blocks inside the multiblock. Each does a different job:[5]
- Storage Input lets you pipe items into the multiblock. Its tooltip says it is optimized for low TPS impact.[4][5]
- Storage Output lets you pipe items out of the multiblock.[4][5]
- Storage I/O does both, piping items to and from the multiblock.[4][5]
You don't need three separate crafts to get them. In this pack the three blocks are converted into each other with shapeless recipes, and the pack has changed all three. Input becomes Output, Output becomes I/O, and I/O becomes Input.[4]
The mod also has a storage link block, which connects a separate multiblock of storages to a controller. You use the Storage Tool to link it. The same tool links, locks, and hides counts, tiers and locks on storages, and you change its mode with a keybind shown in its tooltip.[5]
Slot capacity
Stack upgrades change how many stacks fit in each slot. These are the multipliers stated in the mod's tooltips:[5]
- Stack Upgrade Tier 1 multiplies by 2, Tier 1+ by 3, Tier 2 by 4, Tier 3 by 8, Tier 4 by 16 and Tier 5 by 32.[5]
- The Omega tier raises the stack size limit to 2,147,483,647.[5]
- Stack Downgrades go the other way. Tier 1 divides by 8, Tier 2 by 16 and Tier 3 by 32.[5]
Limited barrels trade slots for capacity. Their tooltip shows a number of slots and a base stack size multiplier. The exact values aren't in my sources, so check the item in game. The pack has its own recipes for the Limited Barrel I to IV items, such as Limited Barrel 1 and Limited Barrel 4.[4][5]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: sophisticatedstorage:acacia_limited_barrel_1
The Basic Tier Upgrade upgrades vanilla inventories to their sophisticated version. The pack changed the recipes of the tier upgrades, such as Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade and Basic to Diamond Tier Upgrade. Here is the diamond one:[4][5]

Item automation upgrades
Upgrades slot into the storage and add behavior. Most come in a basic and an advanced version, and the advanced version adds more filtering options.[5]
- Hopper Upgrade pulls items from the block on top and/or pushes them to the block below. The advanced version is faster and has input and output options.[5]
- Filter Upgrade filters items piped in and/or out of the storage.[5]
- Pickup Upgrade makes the storage pick up items. The Magnet Upgrade pulls items into the storage from range, and the advanced version has a greater range.[5]
- Void Upgrade voids the items you select in its filter.[5]
- Feeding Upgrade feeds you food from the storage's inventory. The advanced version gives more options for when food is fed.[5]
- Compacting Upgrade compacts items into their compressed variants, but only 2x2 recipes. The advanced version handles both 2x2 and 3x3. The Compression Upgrade automatically compresses and decompresses items.[5]
Processing upgrades
Several upgrades put a machine in an upgrade tab. The Crafting, Stonecutter, Smelting, Blasting, Smoking and Sawmill upgrades each put their station there. There are also Chipped upgrades for the Alchemy Bench, Botanist's Workbench, Carpenters Table, Glassblower, Loom Table, Mason Table and Tinkering Table.[5]
The auto versions of the smelting upgrades also pull and push items automatically. These are Auto-smelting Upgrade, Auto-blasting Upgrade for ores and metal stuff, and Auto-smoking Upgrade for food. The pack changed the recipes for the blasting and smoking versions:[4][5]

The Alchemy Upgrade automatically uses potions, food with effects, or milk buckets. The advanced version adds effect filtering options. The pack changed its recipe:[4][5]

Recipe id: sophisticatedstorage:alchemy_upgrade
Fluids, experience and infinity
The Pump Upgrade moves fluids between a Tank upgrade and adjacent blocks. The advanced version works with fluid containers in your hand and fluid blocks in the world, and lets you filter which fluids are pumped. The XP Pump Upgrade moves experience between a Tank upgrade and the player.[5]
The Infinity Upgrade makes all items in the storage infinite, but only admins can set infinite items and break the storage. The Survival Infinity Upgrade does the same, except all players can set infinite items and break the storage.[5]
Unverified No config files for this mod were available, so I can't confirm whether the pack changes any of the numbers above, such as stack multipliers or limited barrel slot counts. The recipes shown are the ones the pack uses.
How do you progress through Sophisticated Storage?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 guide
Sophisticated Storage in this pack follows a clean tier ladder: copper, iron, gold, diamond, then netherite. The pack's storage quests walk you up that ladder in order, and each quest accepts either the chest or the barrel version of the tier. So you can pick whichever style you like and still get credit.[3]
The tier quest line
- Copper: "Copper Chest" quest asks for a Copper Chest or Copper Barrel.[3]
- Iron: "Iron Chest" quest unlocks after the copper quest and asks for an Iron Chest or Iron Barrel.[3]
- Gold: "Gold Chest" quest follows the iron quest and asks for a Gold Chest or Gold Barrel.[3]
- Diamond: "Diamond Chest" quest follows the gold quest and asks for a Diamond Chest or Diamond Barrel.[3]
- Netherite: "Netherite Chest" quest is the end of the line. It follows the diamond quest and asks for a Netherite Chest or Netherite Barrel.[3]
How the tiers are crafted here
Every tier recipe in the pack is flagged as changed by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. Gold chests and barrels are built from iron ones, diamond from gold, and netherite from diamond.[4]
Copper and iron are the flexible part. You can make an iron chest or barrel straight from a basic one, or upgrade a copper one into iron. Copper is therefore an optional stepping stone for crafting, even though the quest line has you pass through it.[3][4]

The pack also has separate double-chest tier recipes for copper, iron, gold, diamond and netherite. They follow the same ladder, with the iron one again accepting a copper chest as its starting point.[4]
Tier upgrade items
There are also upgrade items for each tier, such as the Basic to Copper Tier Upgrade. They chain the same way as the containers. The iron version can be made from the copper one, the gold version from the iron one, and the diamond version from the gold one. The netherite version is made from the diamond one and is shapeless.[4]

Side quests: controller, tool, link and upgrade base
Alongside the tiers, the storage chapter has a small network branch. a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Storage Controller. a quest in "Basic Storage" then asks for the Storage Tool. a quest in "Basic Storage" needs both of those done first, and asks for the Storage Link.[3]
a quest in "Basic Storage" is separate from the tier line and asks for the Upgrade Base. Several of the pack's upgrade recipes, such as the Blasting Upgrade and Alchemy Upgrade, use it as a component.[3][4]

How does Sophisticated Storage work with other mods?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 guide
In this pack, Sophisticated Storage connects to two other mods through crafting: Sophisticated Backpacks and Chipped. All the recipes below are marked as changed by the pack, so they are this pack's versions and not necessarily the mod defaults.[4]
Sharing upgrades with Sophisticated Backpacks
You don't have to build every upgrade twice. The pack has conversion recipes that turn a storage upgrade into its backpack twin, for example the storage Magnet Upgrade into the backpack Magnet Upgrade. They cover the basic and advanced upgrades, the stack upgrades and downgrades, and the Chipped upgrades.[4]

The stack upgrades don't line up by name. The storage Stack Upgrade Tier 2 converts into the backpack Stack Upgrade Tier 1. The storage Stack Upgrade Tier 1 Plus converts into the backpack Stack Upgrade Starter Tier. Check the tier before you convert.[4]
Conversion also goes the other way for many upgrades. For example, the backpack Alchemy Upgrade can be turned into the storage Alchemy Upgrade.[4]

Chipped workstation upgrades
Chipped adds workstation upgrades for your storage: Alchemy Bench, Botanist's Workbench, Carpenters Workbench, Glassblower, Loom Table, Mason Table and Tinkering Table. Each is built around the matching Chipped block, such as the Mason Table, and also needs an Upgrade Base.[4]

The other Chipped upgrades follow the same pattern with their own workstation block.
Each of these also has a backpack version, for example Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade and Chipped: Glassblower Upgrade. A conversion recipe turns the storage version into the backpack version.[4]
Quests
The quests in the storage chapter only ask for Sophisticated Storage items, such as the Storage Controller and the Storage Link. None of them asks for items from another mod.[3]
Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Sophisticated Storage?
4 parts
Sophisticated Storage lives in the "Basic Storage" chapter of the quest book. Its quests sit in one branch that starts at "Sophisticated Storage" quest, and every quest there asks you to have an item in your inventory. The chapter's own intro says it covers the basic ways to store items without needing power.[2]
The chest tier line
"Sophisticated Storage" quest introduces the mod. It tells you the chests and barrels work like vanilla ones, but have a slot for a Storage Upgrade. Metals raise their storage, and upgrades add functionality. The chest quests then run in a straight line, and each one accepts either the chest or the matching barrel:[2]
- "Copper Chest" quest asks for a Copper Chest or Copper Barrel. The quest says you don't need it to make an Iron Chest, but it can save you some iron.[2]
- "Iron Chest" quest asks for an Iron Chest or Iron Barrel. The book places it after both the intro quest and the Copper Chest.[2]
- "Gold Chest" quest asks for a Gold Chest or Gold Barrel.[2]
- "Diamond Chest" quest asks for a Diamond Chest or Diamond Barrel.[2]
- "Netherite Chest" quest asks for a Netherite Chest or Netherite Barrel. The quest calls it the biggest of the chests from Sophisticated Storage.[2]
Controller, tool and link
a quest in "Basic Storage" also comes straight after the intro quest and asks for the Storage Controller. It lets several storages work as one big multiblock. You connect them by placing them next to the controller, or next to storages already connected to it. This works up to 14 blocks away from the controller in all directions.[2]
Two quests follow the controller. a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Storage Tool. Right-click the controller to bind it, then right-click storages to link them wirelessly, with the same 14 block range. a quest in "Basic Storage" comes after both the controller and the tool, and asks for the Storage Link. It connects storages that aren't attached to a controller or to anything connected to one, and the 14 block range still applies.[2]
Upgrade Base
a quest in "Basic Storage" asks for the Upgrade Base. The quest doesn't list every upgrade here. It points you to the Sophisticated Backpacks upgrade quests, and says the Sophisticated Storage versions work about the same but need their own base.[2]
In the Create chapter
The "Create" chapter mentions the mod once in the quests we could read. "Stock Link" quest comes after Cardboard Packages and compares Create's Stock Links to AE2 and Sophisticated Storage. It adds that they can connect to Chests, Barrels and Vaults. 24 of the 91 quests in that chapter weren't available here, so check the quest book itself for anything further.[6]
