What is Pylons?
1 part
Same as in the All the Mods 10 7.1 guide
Pylons is a compact "magic block" mod. Each pylon is a single block that does one useful job for your base, and this pack ships version 5.4.2. You get four of them: the Harvester Pylon, Infusion Pylon, Interdiction Pylon and Expulsion Pylon.[1][2]
- The Harvester Pylon is a very simple auto-farm. Put it on or in your farm's water source and it harvests and replants fully grown crops in a 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 area. It needs a hoe inside it and an inventory such as a chest above it.[1][3]
- The Infusion Pylon is like a better, cheaper beacon. It keeps giving you the effect stored in a Potion Filter with no range limit, although it may need to be chunkloaded.[1][3]
- The Interdiction Pylon blocks mob spawns. Each Mob Filter holds 1 mob. A Lifeless Filter stops every natural spawn in a 25x25 chunk area at every Y level, but it does not stop spawners or spawn eggs.[3]
- The Expulsion Pylon is made for servers. It keeps players who aren't whitelisted out of 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunks around it, and you whitelist friends with a Player Filter.[1][3]
This mod is for you if you want quality-of-life upgrades without building big machines. It covers hands-off crop farming, permanent buffs, spawn-proofing without lighting up every cave, and protecting your base on a multiplayer server.[1][3]
Where it fits in this pack
The pack gives Pylons its own quest chapter. In that chapter, each pylon's quest follows the quest for the filter it uses. The Potion Filter quest a quest in "Pylons" leads to the Infusion Pylon quest a quest in "Pylons". The Player Filter quest a quest in "Pylons" leads to the Expulsion Pylon quest a quest in "Pylons". The Mob Filter quest a quest in "Pylons" and the Lifeless Filter quest a quest in "Pylons" both lead to the Interdiction Pylon quest a quest in "Pylons". The Harvester Pylon has its own quest, a quest in "Pylons".[3]
How do you get started with Pylons?
4 parts
The pack's quest book gives Pylons its own chapter, so start there. The first quest, "Pylons" quest, asks for Polished Blackstone, since you need it to make the pylons.[4]
Step 1: the Harvester Pylon
Begin with the Harvester Pylon. It is a very simple auto-farm, and the quest book unlocks it right after the first quest and a short quest about the hoe it needs. Here is the recipe:[4]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: pylons:harvester_pylon
Set it up like this: put the pylon on or in a water source, give it a hoe, and put an inventory such as a chest above it for the crops. It harvests and replants fully grown crops in an area you choose: 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 blocks. A hoe that can't break works forever, while a normal one needs replacing. See a quest in "Pylons" for the full rundown.[4]
A hoe is still needed in this pack: harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresTool is true, so each harvest action uses 1 durability.[5]
Step 2: Potion Filter and Infusion Pylon
Next, the Potion Filter and the Infusion Pylon. In the quest book the Infusion Pylon (a quest in "Pylons") comes after the Potion Filter quest (a quest in "Pylons").[4]

To fill a filter, get a potion effect on yourself, then right click with the filter to move the effect into it. Repeat until it is full and active. Once it is in the pylon, you keep the effect wherever you are, with no radius. A filter needs 3,600 seconds (1 hour) of effect before it activates (infusion_pylon.infusionRequiredDuration), and each extraction must be at least 60 seconds (infusion_pylon.infusionMinimumDuration). The pack leaves both at the mod defaults.[4][5]
Step 3: Player Filter and Expulsion Pylon
If you play with friends, the Player Filter and Expulsion Pylon are next, following the same order in the quest book (a quest in "Pylons", then a quest in "Pylons").[4]

The pylon keeps non-whitelisted players out of a 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunk area, set in its GUI. Right click a player with the filter, then put the filter in the pylon to whitelist them. By default the pylon's owner is not expelled. In this pack it only works in the Overworld, as set by expulsion_pylon.expulsionAllowedDimensions.[4][5]
Step 4: Mob Filters and the Interdiction Pylon
Last is mob spawn control. The Interdiction Pylon comes after both the Mob Filter (a quest in "Pylons") and the Lifeless Filter (a quest in "Pylons") in the quest book.[4]

Each Mob Filter holds one mob: click the mob with the filter to set it, then put the filter in the pylon. To stop five kinds of mob you need five filters. The Lifeless Filter blocks all mob spawns over a 25x25 chunk area, at every Y level, but not forced spawns from spawners or spawn eggs. It also ignores the pylon's other settings.[4]
How does Pylons work?
6 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 1.26 guide
Pylons is a small magic-block mod. Each pylon does one job on its own, and you tune it with filter items instead of menus full of settings. The sources describe four pylons, and I'll go through each one, plus the filters that control them.[1][7]
Toggling pylons with redstone
The Expulsion, Harvester, Infusion and Interdiction Pylons can all be toggled automatically with redstone. That makes it easy to switch a protection or a farm on and off from a lever, a button or a more elaborate circuit.[7]
Harvester Pylon
The Harvester Pylon harvests crops in a radius from 3x3 to 9x9 blocks around itself and outputs the drops to an inventory above it. Put a chest or a hopper line directly on top of it and you have a simple automated farm.[1][7]
Place it inside the farm's water block, or level with the crops.[7]
By default the pylon needs a hoe inside it and uses 1 durability per harvest. An unbreakable hoe never wears out, and Unbreaking and other durability enchantments are supported. The mod can also be configured to require power instead of durability.[1][7]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: pylons:harvester_pylon
This is the mod's own recipe, unchanged by the pack.
Infusion Pylon
The Infusion Pylon lets you apply potion effects to yourself from any distance, using activated Potion Filter items. By default (configurable) it loads the chunk it sits in while its owner is online, which is how the effects keep working when you are far away.[1][7]
To activate a Potion Filter, first get the effect on yourself, for example from a potion. Then right-click with the filter in hand to extract the effect. This takes all of the remaining duration from you and stores it in the filter.[1][7]
- By default (configurable) the minimum duration you can extract is 60 seconds.[1][7]
- By default (configurable) a filter needs 1 hour of duration to activate. The mod's page equates that to 7.5 vanilla extended potions.[1][7]
- The filter tooltip shows your progress in seconds. Right-clicking with the same effect active adds to that progress.[7]
- If you have duplicate filters with the same effect, hold one in each hand and right-click. The off-hand filter's duration is added to the main-hand filter.[1][7]
- If a tooltip says an effect is disabled in the config, that effect can't be used.[7]

Interdiction Pylon
The Interdiction Pylon prevents natural and forced spawns of the mobs you specify, within a chunk range from 1x1 to 5x5. You choose the mobs with Mob Filter items. Right-click a mob with a filter to select it, then insert the filter into the pylon.[1][7]
The Lifeless Filter works differently. It blocks all mobs instead of chosen ones, but only natural spawns. In exchange it raises the range to 25x25 chunks, and it disables other mob filters in the pylon.[7]

Clearing filters
The pack has a shapeless recipe for each of the Mob, Player and Potion Filters that takes the filter and returns the same filter. The recipe ids are named clear recipes, which suggests they wipe a filter's stored selection, but the sources don't spell out exactly what is cleared.[8]
Unverified The values above marked as default or configurable (hoe durability use, the power option, chunk loading, the 60-second minimum and the 1-hour activation) come from the mod's own descriptions. No config files for this mod were available, so the pack's actual settings could not be confirmed. The power cost for the Harvester Pylon's power mode is also not given in the sources.
How do you progress through Pylons?
5 parts
In this pack, Pylons progression is the quest chapter itself: 11 quests that start with a handful of Polished Blackstone and branch into four Pylons and four Filters.[4]
The chapter opens with "Pylons" quest, which asks for Polished Blackstone, since you need it to make the Pylons. The Filter quests (a quest in "Pylons", a quest in "Pylons", a quest in "Pylons" and a quest in "Pylons") are listed with no prerequisite in the quest book.[4]
The quest order
- a quest in "Pylons" comes after the Pylons quest and a quest about the Hoe it needs (a quest in "Pylons").[4]
- a quest in "Pylons" comes after the Pylons quest and the Potion Filter quest.[4]
- a quest in "Pylons" comes after the Pylons quest and the Player Filter quest.[4]
- a quest in "Pylons" comes after the Pylons quest, the Mob Filter quest and the Lifeless Filter quest.[4]
Harvester Pylon
The Harvester Pylon is a simple auto-farm. Put it on or in a water source and it harvests and replants fully grown crops in a 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 area. It needs a Hoe and an inventory such as a chest above it for the crops. Its recipe is the mod's own, not changed by the pack.[4][6]

Infusion Pylon and the Potion Filter
Fill a Potion Filter by right clicking with it while you have an effect on you. The Infusion Pylon then keeps giving you that effect with no set radius, wherever you are. The pack changed the Infusion Pylon recipe.[4][6]

Expulsion Pylon and the Player Filter
The Expulsion Pylon keeps players who aren't whitelisted out of 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunks, set in its GUI. Right click a player with a Player Filter and put it in the Pylon to whitelist them. By default the owner isn't expelled. The pack changed the Expulsion Pylon recipe.[4][6]

Interdiction Pylon and the mob filters
The Interdiction Pylon blocks mob spawns. A Mob Filter holds a single mob type, so blocking five mob types takes five filters, and you can stack them in the Pylon. You can also change its working area. The pack changed the Interdiction Pylon recipe.[4][6]

How does Pylons work with other mods?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 7.1 guide
Pylons is fairly self-contained in this pack. Every task in its quest chapter asks for a Pylons item, such as the Infusion Pylon or the Harvester Pylon. Where it really connects with the rest of the pack is in what you feed into the pylons.[3]
Modded potion effects in the Infusion Pylon
The Potion Filter isn't limited to vanilla potions. The pack's quest points out that filling it also works with modded potion effects, and even with effects you can't usually get from potions, like Haste or Resistance. So if another mod gives you an effect, you can capture it. Have the effect on you, right-click with the Potion Filter to move it from you into the filter, and repeat until the filter is filled and active.[3]
Once that filter goes into an Infusion Pylon, the pylon keeps giving you the effect no matter where you are, with no set radius like a Beacon has.[3]
Hoes for the Harvester Pylon
The Harvester Pylon needs a Hoe to work on your plants, plus an inventory like a chest above it to collect the crops.[3]
By default, the pylon uses 1 durability from the hoe for every crop it harvests. The mod page says you can use unbreakable hoes from other mods instead, and it gives Mystical Agriculture's Supremium Hoe as an example. That way you never have to swap in a fresh hoe.[1]
Unverified The pack files provided don't confirm whether this pack changes the Harvester Pylon's hoe durability setting, or whether the Supremium Hoe is obtainable here.
Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Pylons?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 7.1 guide
All of the questing for Pylons happens in its own chapter called Pylons. The chapter is built as a few short branches: most of the Pylons need a matching filter first, so you'll usually grab the filter quest and then unlock the Pylon that uses it. Here's each branch in the order the quests unlock.[3]
Mob control: filters, then the Interdiction Pylon
- a quest in "Pylons" ("He's uninvited!") asks for a Mob Filter. To set it, you click the mob you never want to see again with the filter in hand. Each filter holds only 1 mob, so blocking Zombies, Skeletons, Spiders, Creepers and Endermen takes 5 Mob Filters. You can swap the stored mob by clicking a different one.[3]
- a quest in "Pylons" ("Finally peace and quiet.") asks for a Lifeless Filter. It stops every natural mob spawn, hostile or passive, in a 25x25 chunk area at every Y level above and below the Pylon. It has no whitelist, and it doesn't stop forced spawns like spawners or spawn eggs.[3]
- Once both filter quests are done, a quest in "Pylons" unlocks and asks for an Interdiction Pylon. You can stack multiple Mob Filters in it and adjust its Working Area. If you put in a Lifeless Filter, it ignores those settings.[3]
Potion effects: Potion Filter, then the Infusion Pylon
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for a Potion Filter. To fill it, you need the effect on yourself. Right-click with the filter to move the effect from you into the filter, and repeat until it's filled and active. The quest says this also works with modded effects and with effects you can't normally get from potions, such as Haste or Resistance.[3]
- That unlocks a quest in "Pylons", which asks for an Infusion Pylon. It works like a better Beacon: it gives you the effect from its Potion Filter continuously, with no set radius, so it reaches you wherever you are.[3]
Keeping players out: Player Filter, then the Expulsion Pylon
- a quest in "Pylons" asks for a Player Filter. Right-click a player with it to store them, then put it into an Expulsion Pylon to whitelist them. The Pylon's owner isn't expelled by default.[3]
- That unlocks a quest in "Pylons" ("Get off my lawn!"), which asks for an Expulsion Pylon. It keeps non-whitelisted players out of a 1x1, 3x3 or 5x5 chunk area, which you choose in the top left of its GUI. You can't place it too close to spawn.[3]
Farming: the Harvester Pylon
a quest in "Pylons" asks for a Harvester Pylon and unlocks after another quest in the Pylons chapter. The Harvester Pylon is a simple auto-farm. Place it on or in the water source and it harvests and replants fully grown crops in a 3x3, 5x5, 7x7 or 9x9 area around it. It needs a hoe and an inventory, such as a chest, above it to hold the crops, and it has to be switched on.[3]
Unverified The quest that the Harvester Pylon quest depends on isn't described in the available sources, so it's unclear what it asks for.
Which Pylons config options matter?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide
Pylons has a lot of config options, but only a few change how the pack plays. All of them live in the server config file. Only one value in it is flagged as changed from the mod default, so I'll start there.[9]
The one change from the mod default
The pack sets harvester_pylon.harvesterWorkDelay to 20 ticks. The mod default is 60, and the allowed range is 10 to 120. Since this is the delay between harvest attempts, the Harvester Pylon tries to harvest more often than it would in the standalone mod.[9]
The file doesn't list a mod default for a few other options, so I can't say whether the pack changed them. I've described those below simply as what they are set to. Every option that does list a mod default matches it, apart from the harvester delay.[9]
Harvester Pylon
- harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresTool is true, so the harvester needs a hoe and uses 1 durability per harvest action.[9]
- harvester_pylon.harvesterRequiresPower is false. If you turned it on, the tool requirement would be disabled and each block harvested would cost RF instead.[9]
- harvester_pylon.harvesterCanBeAutomated is true, so you can pipe tools in. By default, full automation needs unbreakable tools.[9]
- harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerCost is 5 RF per block and harvester_pylon.harvesterPowerBuffer is 1,000, both matching the mod default. They only matter if power usage is enabled.[9]
Infusion Pylon
- infusion_pylon.infusionRequiredDuration is 3,600 seconds, or 1 hour, which equals 7.5 vanilla extended potions. That's the total duration a Potion Filter needs before you can use it.[1][9]
- infusion_pylon.infusionMinimumDuration is 60 seconds. This is the shortest effect duration you can use for Potion Filters, and it stops unintended interactions with other mods that add persistent low-duration potion effects.[9]
- infusion_pylon.infusionMaximumPotency is 3. The value is 0-indexed, so a Resistance V potion would be potency 4, which is above this cap.[9]
- infusion_pylon.infusionAppliedDuration is 20 seconds. That's the maximum duration applied to you, and it is refreshed every 60 ticks.[9]
- infusion_pylon.infusionDeniedEffects blocks minecraft:absorption and tombstone:ghostly_shape. The pack leaves infusion_pylon.infusionAllowedEffects empty, so every other effect is allowed.[9]
- infusion_pylon.infusionChunkloads is true, so the pylon chunkloads itself. This is limited to one pylon per player, and only while that player is online.[9]
Expulsion Pylon and teams
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionAllowedDimensions is set to the Overworld only, so the Expulsion Pylon won't work in other dimensions.[9]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonCanExplode is false, so explosions can't destroy it.[9]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionPylonMaxRadius is 2, which is also the maximum the range allows. The center chunk isn't counted, so a radius of 2 covers a 5x5 chunk area.[9]
- expulsion_pylon.expulsionWorldSpawnRadius is 1, the mod default. It only takes effect if it is larger than the world spawn radius.[9]
- general.teamSupportEnabled is true, so team support is active if a compatible mod such as FTB Teams or Argonauts is installed.[9]
What changed in Pylons between versions?
1 part
Pylons has been part of the pack since All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0 or earlier. Version 1.2.1 of the pack ships Pylons 5.2.1 (the file pylons-1.21.1-5.2.1.jar).[10]
Pylons 5.2.1
- Fixed a crash on dedicated servers. If you run the pack on a server, this is the fix you want, and it is already included in pack 1.2.1.[10][11]
The pack changelogs have no entries for Pylons, so there are no pack-level changes to this mod to report. The mod's own changelog for 5.2.1 is the only change history I have, and I don't have the changelogs for earlier Pylons versions.[10][11]
