What is Productive Farming?
3 parts
Productive Farming adds an auto-farm multiblock, a big batch of new crops, and extra flowers with new dye colors. The pack's quest book describes it as the newest of the Productive mods, and says it works hand in hand with Productive Bees and Dyenamics. This pack includes version 1.21.1-0.5.3, and it has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier.[1][2]
The auto-farm
The Farm Controller is the heart of the Auto Farm. The Auto Farm grows, harvests and replants every crop inside the structure, and that covers Productive Farming, Mystical Agriculture and vanilla crops. Drops collect in the controller, and you can take them out by hand or through pipes. The quest says the build itself is explained in the next quest.[2]
Animal helpers
- Feeding Trough: it has 9 inventory slots, and each can hold a stack of animal feed that you pipe in. Anything that breeds two animals of the same species works as feed.[2]
- Watering Trough: it takes water buckets instead of food. Baby animals near it grow faster than babies that aren't, so keep it filled.[2]
Where it sits in the quest book
The mod has its own chapter, "Productive Farming", with 185 quests. It opens with the quest "Productive Farming" quest, which asks for dirt. Three quests come directly after it: "Auto-Farm" quest, "Watering Trough" quest and "Feeding Trough" quest.[2]
The rest of the chapter is mostly one quest per plant. The crop quests, such as a quest in "Productive Farming" and a quest in "Productive Farming", come after a "Crops" quest. The flower quests, such as a quest in "Productive Farming" and "Sea Holly" quest, come after a "FLOWERS" quest.[2]
A few crops come from mutations and sit after a "Mutations" quest. a quest in "Productive Farming" follows a quest in "Productive Farming". a quest in "Productive Farming" follows the red and yellow bell pepper quests. a quest in "Productive Farming" follows a quest in "Productive Farming".[2]
The quest text for 84 of the chapter's quests isn't shown here, so check the quest book in game for those.[2]
How do you get started with Productive Farming?
4 parts
Productive Farming has its own chapter in the quest book, and it opens with a quest that explains the mod: an auto-farm multiblock, new crops, and more flowers and dye colors. The Auto-Farm, both troughs, Mutations, Flowers and Crops quests all branch off that first quest. Here is a sensible order to work through them.[2]
First, get seeds from farmer villagers
The new crops don't come from vanilla loot. The quest book says you buy their seeds or crops from Farmer Villagers, who trade them for emeralds up to level 5. Level 5 doesn't add any new seeds or crops. Which seed or crop a farmer offers is random, so expect to do some shopping around.[2]
This pack leaves General.villagersTradeSeeds set to true, so the farmer trades are available.[3]
Next, build toward the Farm Controller
The Farm Controller is the heart of the Auto Farm multiblock. Once the structure is built, it grows, harvests and replants every crop inside it. That covers Productive Farming, Mystical Agriculture and vanilla crops. Drops collect in the controller, and you can pull them out by hand or with pipes.[2]

The quest "Auto-Farm" quest covers how to use the controller. Its text says the build itself is explained in the next quest, so read that one before placing blocks.[2]
The pack keeps the mod's size limits for the farm: a max circumference of 200, a max height of 20 and a max internal volume of 200. They are set in General.foundryMaxCircumference, General.foundryMaxHeight and General.foundryMaxVolume.[3]
Then add the troughs if you keep animals
The Feeding Trough has 9 inventory slots, and each can hold a stack of animal feed that you pipe in. Anything that breeds two animals of the same species works as feed.[2]

Finally, start on flowers and mutations
The new flowers come from bonemealing grass, and the pack has General.spawnFlowersWithBonemeal turned on. The quest book warns that flower fields won't help much in the Sky. Bees with Pollen Upgrades in their hives also cross breed flower types and colors where they pollinate.[2][3]
Crops mutate in a similar way. When bees pollinate near specific crops, some of them may mutate, and JEI shows which crops you need. For example, a Cherry Tomato has a chance to mutate into a Chocolate Pear Tomato.[2]
How does Productive Farming work?
5 parts
The farm multiblock
The farm multiblock has size limits, all set in the server config. General.foundryMaxCircumference is 200, General.foundryMaxHeight is 20 and General.foundryMaxVolume is 200 (internal volume). The pack leaves these at the mod defaults.[3]
The mod's language file also lists a Farm Controller block and a Farm Hatch block.[4]
Troughs and other timed machines
The Feeding Trough has the tooltip "Makes nearby animals breed". Its speed is set by General.feedingTroughTickRate, which is 1200 in this pack, the same as the mod default.[3][4]

The Watering Trough has its own timer, General.wateringTroughTickRate, also 1200 and also unchanged from the mod default.[3]

Two more machines have timers, and the pack leaves both at the mod defaults:[3]
- General.childSeparatorTickRate is the tick rate for the Child Separator, set to 600.[3]
- General.fishTrapTickRate is the tick rate for Fishing Traps, set to 6000.[3]
Traits, flowers and hives
Crops can gain traits as they grow. General.traitIncreaseChance is the chance for that to happen, and it is 0.05 here. With General.traitsOnVanillaCrops on (it is in this pack), vanilla crops get traits too. That adds components to vanilla crop items and overwrites the crop block.[3]
- General.flowerPropagationChance is the chance for flowers to propagate near hives, 0.15 in this pack.[3]
- General.pollenChanceFromSieve is the chance to get pollen when using sieve upgrades in hives, set to 2 (allowed range 1 to 100).[3]
- General.clamSpreadChance is the chance for clams to propagate in a fish farm, 0.1 here.[3]
- General.spawnFlowersWithBonemeal is on, so bonemeal on grass blocks can spawn Productive Farming flowers.[3]
- General.villagersTradeSeeds is on, so farmer villagers can trade you seeds.[3]
Botany pot crops
The mod has 159 botany pot crop recipes, and the pack changed several of them. The changed ones include Agave, Akebia, Amaranth, Arrowroot and the three mushrooms Black Truffle, Chanterelle and Laetiporus. Check the recipe displays below, because they show the pack's version rather than the mod default.[5]

Crates and processing
The Agave Crate is crafted from Agave, and a shapeless recipe turns one crate back into 9 Agave. The mod has 149 shaped and 153 shapeless crafting recipes that take its own items and make its own items, and the crate recipes are among them.[5]
Cantaloupe has two recipes that start from Cantaloupe Slice: one makes Cantaloupe and the other makes Cantaloupe Seeds. Both are shown below.[5]

How do you progress through Productive Farming?
4 parts
In this pack, Productive Farming is laid out as a path in the quest book rather than a set of named tiers. You start with a big branch of basic crops, move into mutations and flowers, then finish with automation and animal helpers. Here is how that path looks.[2]
Step 1: Start with the crops
Most of the chapter is a large Crops branch, where each quest asks you to get one crop. It includes Oats, Turnip, Quinoa and Cloudberry, plus many more. The mutation quests below list specific crops from this branch as their prerequisites, so a good spread of base crops pays off.[2]
The Botany Pots crop recipes for this mod that appear in the recipe dump are all marked as changed by the pack. Seed crops like Amaranth give back the crop and its seeds, while others like Agave give back just the crop. Here is one example:[5]
Crop (botanypots)
Recipe id: productivefarming:botanypots/amaranth
A seed-based crop in a Botany Pot: the pack's version of the recipe returns the crop and its seeds.
Step 2: Breed new crops through mutations
Once you have the base crops, the Mutations quests take over. Each one lists the quests for its parent crops as prerequisites. These are the chains the quests describe.[2]
- Tomatoes: Cherry Tomato can randomly mutate into Chocolate Pear Tomato (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Cherry and Chocolate Pear can combine into Yellow Pear Tomato (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Chocolate Pear and Yellow Pear give Sungold Tomato (a quest in "Productive Farming").[2]
- Roma line: Roma Tomato can randomly mutate into Beefsteak Tomato (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Roma plus Beefsteak gives Blue Beauty Tomato (a quest in "Productive Farming"), though the quest warns it can also turn out as 2 other tomatoes.[2]
- Grapes: Green and Red Grapes give Concord Grape (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Green plus Concord gives Cotton Candy Grape (a quest in "Productive Farming").[2]
- Corn: Yellow Dent Corn plus Cornflowers gives Blue Jade Corn (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Blue Jade plus Yellow Dent gives Black Aztec Corn (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Blue Jade plus Black Aztec gives Sugar Pearl Corn (a quest in "Productive Farming").[2]
- Bell peppers: Red and Yellow give Orange Bell Pepper (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Orange plus Yellow gives White Bell Pepper (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Orange plus Green gives Black Bell Pepper (a quest in "Productive Farming").[2]
Step 3: Collect the flowers
There is also a Flowers branch, with one quest per flower. It covers Anemone, Balloon Flower, Sea Holly, Dahlia, Zinnia and others. Each quest title carries a color tag, such as Purple for the Balloon Flower and Blue for Sea Holly.[2]
Step 4: Automate and look after your animals
The Farm Controller is the heart of the Auto Farm, a multiblock machine. The quest says it grows, harvests and replants every crop inside the structure, and that this works for Productive Farming, Mystical Agriculture and vanilla crops. Drops are collected in the controller, and you can take them out by hand or through pipes. The quest says the build itself is explained in the next quest.[2]
The chapter also has two animal helper blocks. The Feeding Trough has 9 inventory slots, each holding a stack of animal feed that you pipe in. Anything that breeds two animals of the same species works as feed.[2]
The Watering Trough takes water buckets instead. Baby animals near it grow faster than babies that aren't, so keep refilling it.[2]
Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Productive Farming?
4 parts
Nearly all the Productive Farming quests sit in their own "Productive Farming" chapter. One more quest in the "Food and Farming" chapter also accepts this mod's flax seeds. The Productive Farming chapter has three groups: a few machine and animal-block quests, a long run of single-crop quests, and a chain of mutation quests.[2][6]
Start here: the Auto-Farm and the troughs
Three quests are set to come after the "Productive Farming" entry. Each one asks you to get a single block.[2]
- "Auto-Farm" quest asks for the Farm Controller. It is the heart of the Auto Farm multiblock. It grows, harvests and replants every crop inside the structure, including Productive Farming, Mystical Agriculture and vanilla crops. Drops collect in the controller, and you can take them out by hand or with pipes. The quest says the build is explained in the next quest.[2]
- "Watering Trough" quest asks for the Watering Trough. It takes Water Buckets, and baby animals near it grow faster than babies that aren't. Keep it filled.[2]
- "Feeding Trough" quest asks for the Feeding Trough. It has 9 inventory slots, each holding a stack of animal feed that has to be piped in. Anything that breeds two animals of the same species works as feed.[2]
Crops
Next comes a big batch of crop quests, all set to unlock after the "Crops" quest. Each asks for one crop item. Examples are a quest in "Productive Farming" for Oats, a quest in "Productive Farming" for Turnip and a quest in "Productive Farming" for Quinoa. Berries, grains, beans, herbs and vegetables are all covered this way.[2]
a quest in "Productive Farming" covers Flax. The "Food and Farming" chapter also has "Flax String" quest, which unlocks after "Punch the Grass". It accepts flax seeds from several mods, including Flax Seeds. Some of those seeds let you grow string directly, and others give an alternative that works in recipes.[2][6]
Flowers
A second batch unlocks after the "FLOWERS" quest. Each one asks for a single flower or plant and carries a colour label. Examples are a quest in "Productive Farming" (White) for Anemone, "Balloon Flower" quest (Purple) for Balloon Flower and "Dahlia" quest (Black) for Dahlia. The rest are "Sea Holly" quest, "Great Lobelia" quest, "Skullcap" quest, "Cattail" quest, "Amaryllis" quest, "Chrysanthemum" quest, "Hellebore" quest, "Cape Leadwort" quest, "Stinging Nettle" quest, "Hydrangea" quest, "Zinnia" quest, "Black Bearded Iris" quest, a quest in "Productive Farming", "Himalayan Poppy" quest and "Motherwort" quest.[2]
Mutations
The last group is the mutation quests. Each unlocks after the "Mutations" quest and the quests for its parent crops, so you work up each chain from a basic crop in the Crops batch.[2]
- Cherry tomato line: Cherry Tomatoes can randomly mutate into Chocolate Pear Tomato (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Combining the two gives Yellow Pear Tomato (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Chocolate and Yellow Pear Tomatoes then make Sungold Tomato (a quest in "Productive Farming").[2]
- Roma tomato line: Beefsteak Tomato (a quest in "Productive Farming") can come from a random mutation with Roma Tomatoes. Combining Roma and Beefsteak gives Blue Beauty Tomato (a quest in "Productive Farming"), White Wonder Tomato (a quest in "Productive Farming") or Black Beauty Tomato (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Each quest notes a chance of getting one of the 2 other tomatoes instead.[2]
- Berry line: Golden Raspberry (a quest in "Productive Farming") mixes Raspberries and Sungold Tomatoes. Mixing Goji Berry with Golden Raspberries gives Miracle Berry (a quest in "Productive Farming").[2]
- Corn line: Blue Jade Corn (a quest in "Productive Farming") is made from Yellow Dent Corn and Cornflowers. Next come Black Aztec Corn (a quest in "Productive Farming") and Sugar Pearl Corn (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Finally Rainbow Corn (a quest in "Productive Farming") comes from Black Aztec and Sugar Pearl.[2]
- Grape line: Green and Red Grapes make Concord Grape (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Green plus Concord gives Cotton Candy Grape (a quest in "Productive Farming").[2]
- Bell pepper line: Red and Yellow make Orange Bell Pepper (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Orange and Yellow make White Bell Pepper (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Orange and Green make Black Bell Pepper (a quest in "Productive Farming"). Red and Black make Purple Bell Pepper (a quest in "Productive Farming").[2]
Which Productive Farming config options matter?
3 parts
Productive Farming keeps its settings in one file, config/productivefarming-server.toml, all under the General section. Every option in this pack that lists a mod default is set to exactly that default, so the pack hasn't changed any of those values.[3]
Crops, flowers and villagers
- General.traitIncreaseChance is 0.05, the chance for crops to increase traits when they grow. This is the mod default.[3]
- General.traitsOnVanillaCrops is true, so vanilla crops get traits too.[3]
- General.flowerPropagationChance is 0.15, the chance for flowers to propagate near hives. This is the mod default.[3]
- General.pollenChanceFromSieve is 2 (allowed range 1 to 100), the chance to get pollen when using sieve upgrades in hives. This is the mod default.[3]
- General.spawnFlowersWithBonemeal is true, so bonemeal on grass blocks can spawn Productive Farming flowers.[3]
- General.villagersTradeSeeds is true, so you can get seeds from farmer villager trades.[3]
- General.clamSpreadChance is 0.1, the chance for clams to propagate in a fish farm. This is the mod default.[3]
Machine tick rates
- General.childSeparatorTickRate is 600 for the Child Separator.[3]
- General.feedingTroughTickRate is 1,200 for Feeding Troughs.[3]
- General.wateringTroughTickRate is 1,200 for Watering Troughs.[3]
- General.fishTrapTickRate is 6,000 for Fishing Traps.[3]
All of these tick rates are the mod defaults, so nothing here is sped up or slowed down by the pack.[3]
Farm multiblock size limits
The farm multiblock size limits are all at the mod defaults: General.foundryMaxCircumference is 200, General.foundryMaxHeight is 20, and General.foundryMaxVolume is 200 for the max internal volume. Check the volume cap before you design a big build.[3]
