What is Productive Farming?

Productive Farming is a farming mod, and this pack ships version 1.21.1-0.2.0 of it. It has been in the pack since 1.0 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the farming side of the pack.[1]

The one piece the pack's quests confirm is flax. The mod adds Flax Seeds, and they show up in the "Food and Farming" chapter in the quest "Flax String" quest. That quest comes right after "Punch the Grass", so you can reach it early.[2]

The quest is about growing your own string instead of hunting spiders. It accepts flax seeds from several mods, including Productive Farming's, so any of them completes it. The quest text says some of these let you grow string directly, while others give you an alternative that works in recipes.[2]

Tip: If you're just chasing the Flax String quest, you don't have to use this mod's seeds. Seeds from any of the listed mods count, so use whichever you find first.[2]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe the rest of what Productive Farming adds, such as other crops, machines or progression gating, and they don't place it on the ATM Star path. Treat anything beyond flax as unconfirmed until it's checked in game.

How do you get started with Productive Farming?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 guide

Productive Farming adds a big set of crops, and the first steps in this pack are simple: get your first seeds, try a melon, and learn the crate recipes. The sources here don't give a fixed progression order for the mod, so this section sticks to what the pack's files confirm.[3][4]

First: get flax seeds

The quest "Flax String" quest in the food_and_farming chapter asks you to obtain flax seeds. It follows another quest in the same chapter. Flax seeds from several mods are accepted, and Flax Seeds from this mod is one of them, so you aren't locked into a single source.[3]

If you get a Flax Seeds Bag, you can turn it into loose seeds with a shapeless crafting recipe.[4]

Next: cut your first melon

If you find a Cantaloupe Slice, the pack has a recipe for a whole Cantaloupe and another for Cantaloupe Seeds. Both are shown below.[4]

Slice to cantaloupe seeds.

Then: learn the crate recipes

The mod has crate recipes for its crops, such as the Cantaloupe Crate, with a recipe to pack the crop and another to unpack it. Both are shown below. Vanilla crops get crate recipes too, giving you the Carrot Crate and the Beetroot Crate.[4]

A fun extra: the corn cob pipe

Once you have corn, the Corn Cob Pipe is a shaped crafting recipe that takes a corn item and a wooden rod.[4]

Tip: A tooltip in the mod says an item can be used on a fully grown crop to manually pollinate it. Many of the mod's tooltips also say to hold Shift for more info.[5]

How does Productive Farming work?

5 parts

Productive Farming is mostly a crop and animal mod, and the sources for this pack only explain a handful of its systems. Here is what I can confirm: the troughs, the timers and chances in the server config, the farm multiblock size limits, pollination and crop traits, and crate packing.[6][7][8]

Troughs for animals

There are two troughs. The Feeding Trough makes nearby animals breed. The Watering Trough increases the growth speed of nearby animals.[6]

Both run on a tick rate you can change in the config. The pack sets General.feedingTroughTickRate and General.wateringTroughTickRate to 1,200 each, which is also the mod default. So the pack hasn't changed them.[7]

Tip: The config ranges for all of these tick rates are values above 1. If a machine feels too slow or too fast for your base, they are the options to look at.[7]

The farm multiblock

The config describes a farm multiblock, which the option names call the foundry, and gives it size limits. In this pack they are: a max circumference of 200 (General.foundryMaxCircumference), a max height of 20 (General.foundryMaxHeight) and a max internal volume of 200 (General.foundryMaxVolume). Each of these matches the mod default.[7]

Keep the internal volume limit in mind when you plan a build, because it caps the space inside the structure.[7]

Hives, pollen and flowers

Flowers can propagate near hives. The chance is General.flowerPropagationChance, set to 0.15 in the pack, the mod default. Sieve upgrades in hives can give pollen, and General.pollenChanceFromSieve is set to 2 (allowed range 1 to 100), again the mod default.[7]

You can also pollinate by hand: the in-game description says to use pollen on a fully grown crop to manually pollinate it.[6]

General.spawnFlowersWithBonemeal is enabled, so bonemeal on grass blocks can spawn Productive Farming flowers.[7]

Crop traits and seeds

Crops can gain traits as they grow. General.traitIncreaseChance is the chance for crops to increase traits when growing, and the pack keeps the mod default of 0.05.[7]

General.traitsOnVanillaCrops is true in the pack. That adds traits to vanilla crops by adding components to the vanilla crop items and overwriting the crop block.[7]

General.villagersTradeSeeds is also true, so you can get seeds from farmer villager trades.[7]

Crates

Produce can be packed into crates and unpacked again by crafting. Packing uses a shaped recipe and unpacking uses a shapeless one. Agave is a good example, using the Agave and Agave Crate items.[8]

The same pattern covers many other crops, such as Akebia Crate and Blackberry Crate. Vanilla beetroot has a crate too, the Beetroot Crate.[8]

How do you progress through Productive Farming?

4 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 guide

Productive Farming doesn't have a tiered progression in this pack, at least not one I can confirm from the pack's files. The mod isn't on the main quest path, and the only quest that touches it is a small one in the food and farming chapter. Here's what the pack data does show.[3]

The quest

Quest "Flax String" quest sits in the food and farming chapter and unlocks after another quest in that chapter. Its task is to hold flax seeds. Flax Seeds count, and so do the flax seeds from several other mods, so you don't need this mod's version to complete it.[3]

Seed bags

The pack has a recipe that turns a Flax Seeds Bag back into Flax Seeds. That's the quickest way to get the quest item from this mod.[4]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: productivefarming:seed_bags/flax_seeds_unpack

Melons and pipes

A Cantaloupe Slice can be crafted into a whole Cantaloupe or into Cantaloupe Seeds. Both recipes are shapeless.[4]

The Corn Cob Pipe is a shaped recipe that uses any corn and any wooden rod.[4]

Crates

Most crops in the pack have a crate recipe, and the ones I can see also have a shapeless unpack recipe that turns the crate back into the crop. Agave is a good example, with Agave going into an Agave Crate and back out again.[4]

Unverified No tier breakdown, growth stages, or required order for crops is confirmed in the pack's quests or recipes. Part of the recipe list wasn't available to check, so there may be other recipes for this mod that aren't covered here.

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Productive Farming?

1 part

In this pack, Productive Farming shows up in only one quest, so this section is short. It's in the Food and Farming chapter: "Flax String" quest, with the tagline "Who needs Spiders anyway?"[2]

Flax String

This quest comes after the "Punch the Grass" quest, so you unlock it by finishing that one first.[2]

The task is to hand in flax seeds. Flax Seeds from this mod count, but so do flax seeds from several other mods, so you don't need Productive Farming specifically to complete it.[2]

The quest text says it's time to grow some string. Some of the accepted seeds let you grow string directly, while others give you an alternative that works in recipes.[2]

Unverified The sources don't say what reward this quest gives, and they don't list any other Productive Farming quests in the pack.

Which Productive Farming config options matter?

4 parts

All of Productive Farming's settings live in one file, config/productivefarming-server.toml, under the General section. The good news is that this pack leaves every option that lists a mod default at that default. So the numbers below are the stock Productive Farming values, not pack tweaks.[7]

Crops and traits

Watch out: With traitsOnVanillaCrops on, the mod adds components to vanilla crop items and overwrites the crop block. Keep that in mind if you mix vanilla crops with other farming setups.[7]

Bees and flowers

Machine and farm speeds

These options are all tick rates, and the pack keeps every one at the mod default. Child Separator (General.childSeparatorTickRate) is 600. Feeding Troughs (General.feedingTroughTickRate) and Watering Troughs (General.wateringTroughTickRate) are both 1,200. Fishing Traps (General.fishTrapTickRate) are 6,000. Clams spreading in a fish farm (General.clamSpreadChance) have a 0.1 chance, also the default.[7]

Farm multiblock size

The farm multiblock limits are unchanged from the mod defaults. General.foundryMaxCircumference is 200, General.foundryMaxHeight is 20, and General.foundryMaxVolume is 200 for the internal volume. Plan your build to fit inside those limits.[7]

Unverified The pack file does not list a mod default for the three true/false options (traits on vanilla crops, villager seed trades and bonemeal flowers). Whether the pack changed them from the mod's own defaults is unconfirmed.
