What is Pipez?

3 parts

Pipez adds simple, highly configurable pipes that are built to cause as little lag as possible. You get Item Pipe, Fluid Pipe, Energy Pipe and Gas Pipe, which needs Mekanism. There is also the Universal Pipe, which puts all of those pipe types into one block. The pack includes Pipez 1.21.1-1.2.19 for NeoForge.[1][2]

Who it's for

Pipez is for you if you want logistics without a big learning curve. The pack's own quest calls it the simplest logistics mod. You attach pipes to what you want to connect and then use the Pipe Wrench to decide which sides pull, push or stay disconnected. Other wrenches work with Pipez too. The quest also says it can get laggy when used in mass, but still not as laggy as Mekanism pipes.[3]

Watch out: Pipes don't transfer anything until you set them to extract. Sneak-click the end of a connected pipe with a wrench to do that.[1][4]

Upgrades

Pipes are relatively slow by default, and upgrades are how you speed them up. Each tier also unlocks more options, and the pack's quests describe them like this:[1][3]

Where it fits in the pack

Pipez shows up early in the Basic Logistics quests. The "Pipez" quest quest leads to separate quests for item, fluid, gas and energy pipes, one for upgrades, and one for the filter destination tool. The "Universal Pipez" quest quest unlocks after you finish the Fluid, Item and Energy ones. It also appears in the Basic Power chapter, where "Pipez: Energy Pipes" quest follows the Transferring Power quest and "Pipez: Upgrades" quest comes after it.[3][4]

In the XyCraft chapter, the "Pipes" quest quest accepts a Pipez fluid pipe or universal pipe (among other mods' pipes) for carrying Hydro Pump water into a tank.[5]

Unverified The mod describes a fifth upgrade tier, Infinity, which is not craftable by default. Nothing in the pack's sources confirms whether or how you can get it here.

How do you get started with Pipez?

5 parts

Pipez is the pack's simple logistics mod. Its pipes move items, fluids, energy and gas between machines and inventories, and they're built to cause as little lag as possible. Here's the order I'd tackle things in.[1][3]

First, make the Pipe Wrench

Start with the Pipe Wrench. Pipes won't move anything until you tell them to extract, and the wrench is how you do that. The quest book also says other mods' wrenches work with Pipez.[1][3]

Next, make an Item Pipe

The Item Pipe is the simplest pipe. It moves items from one inventory to another, for example chest to chest, a farm to your system, or a quarry to a smelter.[3]

  1. Place the pipe so it connects to the block you want to pull from and the block you want to fill.[3]
  2. Shift+right-click the connected side of the pipe with the wrench to set it to extract.[1][4]
  3. Click the extracting part of the pipe to change modes, add filters or add upgrades.[1]
Watch out: A pipe that isn't set to extract transfers nothing. If your setup looks right but nothing moves, check this first.[1]

Then, upgrade your pipes

Pipes are fairly slow at first, and the only way to speed them up is with upgrades. Higher tiers move more and unlock extra options. Basic Pipe Upgrade adds redstone modes. Improved Pipe Upgrade adds distribution modes: closest first, farthest first, round-robin or random. Advanced Pipe Upgrade adds filters. Ultimate Pipe Upgrade adds no new options and just moves a lot.[1][3]

In this pack the upgrades build on each other: the Improved upgrade is crafted from the Basic one, the Advanced from the Improved, and the Ultimate from the Advanced.[6]

Add the other pipe types as you need them

  • Fluid Pipe moves fluids such as water and lava, and the pack's quests use it for getting liquids into tanks.[3][5]
  • Energy Pipe moves energy. Check that your machines have energy ports on the sides you connect to, since some have strict IO.[3]
  • Gas Pipe moves Mekanism gases, which the Item, Fluid and Energy pipes can't carry. The pack changed this recipe from the mod's default, so use the recipe below.[3][6]

Filtering

Filtering needs at least an Advanced Upgrade. With it installed, click Add to create a filter by item, tag or NBT, and set it to whitelist or blacklist. To send a filter to one specific inventory, craft the Filter Destination Tool, Shift+right-click that inventory with it, then put the tool in the filter's destination slot.[1][3]

How does Pipez work?

7 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Pipez is all about moving things from A to B without lag. In this pack you get Item Pipe, Fluid Pipe, Energy Pipe and Gas Pipe. The gas pipe works with Mekanism. The Universal Pipe combines all four in one block. Everything is set up through a wrench and upgrades, so let's go through how it works.[1]

Pipes only move things when they extract

This catches a lot of people out: a pipe doesn't transfer anything unless it is set to extract. The mod also keeps lag low on purpose. Only extracting pipes have block entities, and pipes don't load unnecessary chunks.[1]

  1. Craft a Pipe Wrench and connect your pipes between the source and the destination.[1][7]
  2. Sneak-click the end of a connected pipe with the wrench to set it to extract.[1]
  3. Click the extracting part of the pipe to change modes, add filters or add upgrades.[1]
  4. To disconnect or reconnect a pipe side, sneak-click it with the wrench.[1]

Speed and upgrades

Pipes are relatively slow by default, and you raise the speed by adding an upgrade. A higher upgrade tier means a higher transfer rate. The pipe's tooltip shows its current rate: FE per tick for energy, mB per tick for fluids and gas, and a number of items per a number of ticks for item pipes.[1][8]

The mod has five upgrade tiers: Basic Pipe Upgrade, Improved Pipe Upgrade, Advanced Pipe Upgrade, Ultimate Pipe Upgrade and Infinity. The mod describes Infinity as not craftable by default. The recipes for the other four are shown below.[1][7]

Upgrades also unlock features, so a bare pipe can't do everything:[1]

Every setting you change and every filter you add is stored in the upgrade itself. To copy that data onto other upgrades, craft them together.[1]

Watch out: The exact transfer rate for each tier isn't confirmed by the sources I have. No config files for Pipez were available for this pack, so check the rate tooltip on your own pipe instead of trusting mod defaults.[8]

Filters

Filters work with item pipes, fluid pipes and gas pipes. You can combine several filters on one pipe, and each filter can be a blacklist or whitelist. Filters can also be inverted with the paper button, which makes the filter apply to the exact opposite of what you entered (the destination stays the same). Filters can be copied, and the filter GUI offers tag filtering.[1]

  • To add a specific object, click it onto the slot in the filter GUI, or type its ID in the text field next to the slot.[1]
  • Tag entries are written with a # prefix, or you can use plain item IDs.[8]
  • If the object has NBT data, the NBT string appears in a second text area. Delete that text if you don't want to match NBT.[1]
  • The NBT button switches between matching the exact NBT data and matching only the tags you provided.[1][8]
  • Some entry types can't have NBT tags at all, and the GUI tells you so.[8]

Per-filter destinations

A filter can apply to only one destination. For this you need the Filter Destination Tool. Click the block your pipe inserts into to store its location and face. Then put the tool in the destination slot of the filter GUI, and the destination block shows up in the filter list.[1][7][8]

Watch out: Destination setting doesn't work if you click a side of the block that the pipe isn't connected to.[1]

Gas Pipe in this pack

The Gas Pipe recipe is changed by the pack. It still depends on Mekanism, so use the recipe below rather than any recipe you remember from the mod's defaults.[1][7]

Why Pipez is so light

The mod claims efficient rendering and a server-friendly design. Its project page compares Pipez item pipes against Mekanism's logistical transporters at about 4200 and about 7200 pipes. It says Mekanism's recursive connection algorithm crashes with a stack overflow at the larger size. That is the mod author's own claim, so I haven't tested it in this pack.[1]

How do you progress through Pipez?

5 parts

Pipez has no big tech tree. Progression is two tracks: pick the pipe type for what you want to move, then upgrade that pipe to unlock more options. The pack's quest book walks you through both, starting with the "Pipez" quest quest in the Basic Logistics chapter, which asks for the Pipe Wrench.[3]

Step 1: the Pipe Wrench

Place a pipe next to what you want to move things between, then use the wrench to choose, per side, whether the pipe pulls, pushes, or doesn't connect. The quest also says other wrenches work with Pipez. In the power chapter, the quest suggests shift+right-clicking the connected side with the wrench to set the pipe to extract.[3][4]

The pack changes this recipe from the mod's own, so don't rely on the mod's default.

If you reach power first, the Basic Power chapter has its own entry, "Pipez: Energy Pipes" quest, which comes after the Transferring Power quest and asks for an energy pipe and the wrench.[4]

Step 3: the Universal Pipe

The Universal Pipe moves items, fluids or energy, so you don't have to worry about what's flowing through. Its quest, "Universal Pipez" quest, unlocks after the Fluid, Item and Energy Pipez quests. The recipe uses the three matching pipes, so you build up to it.[3][6]

Upgrade tiers

Pipe upgrades are the second track. Every upgrade increases how much the pipe moves, and each tier adds options. The quest is a quest in "Basic Logistics" in Basic Logistics and "Pipez: Upgrades" quest in Basic Power. Either one is completed by any of the four upgrades. The upgrade recipes form a chain, from Basic up to Ultimate.[3][4][6]

  1. Basic Pipe Upgrade: allows redstone activation of the pipe.[3][4]
  2. Improved Pipe Upgrade: lets you change distribution to Closest First, Farthest First, Round-Robin or Random.[3][4]
  3. Advanced Pipe Upgrade: lets you add filters.[3][4]
  4. Ultimate Pipe Upgrade: adds no new option, it just moves a lot more.[3][4]

Filtering with the Advanced Upgrade

Pipez has its own filtering, and you need at least an Advanced Upgrade installed to use it. Click the Add button to create a filter by item, tag or NBT. Set it to whitelist (only the filter) or blacklist (everything but the filter).[3]

To set a destination filter, shift+right-click an inventory with the Filter Destination Tool. The quest for it is a quest in "Basic Logistics".[3]

Tip: Pipez also shows up in the XyCraft chapter. The Pipes quest for the Hydro Pump accepts a Pipez fluid pipe or a Universal Pipe, among other mods' fluid pipes.[5]
Watch out: The quest text says Pipez can be laggy when used in mass, though not as laggy as Mekanism pipes.[3]

How does Pipez work with other mods?

4 parts

Pipez is the pack's simple logistics mod, and most of its links to other mods are about what the pipes can plug into. The clearest tie-in is with Mekanism, followed by a Hydro Pump quest in the XyCraft chapter.[3][5]

Mekanism: Gas Pipes

The Gas Pipe exists because of Mekanism. The quest "Gas Pipez" quest explains that Mekanism adds gas as another state of matter, and none of the other Pipez can move it. If you need to move something like Hydrogen or Lithium, this is the pipe you want.[3]

The pack has changed the Gas Pipe recipe, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. This is the recipe you'll actually craft with here. It uses a Mekanism material, so you'll need some Mekanism progress first.[6]

Tip: The quest author admits it can be hard to tell whether a Mekanism resource is a gas, a fluid or an infuse type. A machine's display may tell you. If it doesn't, check JEI for other recipes that involve it.[3]

Pipez also lists Mekanism's own pipes as a comparison point. The Pipez quest says Pipez can get laggy when used in mass, but still not as laggy as Mekanism pipes.[3]

XyCraft: Hydro Pump and fluid storage

In the XyCraft chapter, the quest "Pipes" quest has you connect a Hydro Pump to pipes so liquids can reach a tank. The Hydro Pump can automatically put water into the pipes at a slow rate, for free. The quest accepts the Fluid Pipe or the Universal Pipe. Pipes from Modern Dynamics, Mekanism and Immersive Engineering are accepted too, so you can use whichever system you prefer.[5]

Other machines and inventories

  • The Energy Pipe doesn't care which mod the power comes from. The quest says it moves FE, RF or something else. Some machines have strict IO ports for energy, so check those.[3]
  • The Item Pipe moves items between any inventories. The quest gives examples like one chest to another, a farm to a system, or a quarry to a smelter.[3]
  • The Fluid Pipe can move fluids from many mods, plus Minecraft's own water and lava. The quest says it can also be connected to sinks to move infinite water.[3]
  • The Universal Pipe is the all-in-one option. It moves items, fluids or energy, as covered in "Universal Pipez" quest.[3][4]

Wrenches from other mods

You don't have to use the Pipe Wrench. Both the Pipez quest "Pipez" quest and the energy pipes quest "Pipez: Energy Pipes" quest say other wrenches work with Pipez as well.[3][4]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Pipez?

3 parts

Pipez turns up in three quest chapters: Basic Logistics, Basic Power and XyCraft. Basic Logistics is the one that covers the whole mod, so start there.[3][4][5]

Basic Logistics

Everything starts with "Pipez" quest, which asks you to get a Pipe Wrench. The quest explains that you attach a pipe where you want to move things, then use the wrench to set each side to pull, push or not connect. It also says other wrenches work with Pipez.[3]

Once that's done, these quests all unlock straight after it:[3]

The upgrades quest also explains what each upgrade does. All of them increase how much the pipe moves. The Basic Upgrade adds redstone activation, and the Improved Upgrade lets you choose Closest First, Farthest First, Round-Robin or Random distribution. The Advanced Upgrade unlocks filters, and the Ultimate Upgrade adds nothing new, it just moves a lot.[3]

For the filtering quest, you need at least an Advanced Upgrade installed. Click the Add button to create a filter by Item, Tag or NBT, then set it to Whitelist or Blacklist. To set the destination filter, Shift Right Click an inventory with the tool.[3]

The last quest in the chapter is "Universal Pipez" quest, which asks for the Universal Pipe. It only unlocks after you've finished the Fluid, Item and Energy Pipez quests, and the pipe it rewards can move items, fluids or energy.[3]

Basic Power

"Pipez: Energy Pipes" quest comes after the Transferring Power quest and asks for an Energy Pipe and a Pipe Wrench. To extract power from a block, place the pipe next to it and Shift+Right-click the connected side with the wrench to set it to extract. The quest also mentions that Pipez can carry items, gases and liquids, and that the Universal Pipe does all of it in one.[4]

Next comes "Pipez: Upgrades" quest, which unlocks after the energy pipes quest. Any one of the four pipe upgrades completes it, and it repeats the same upgrade explanation as the Logistics chapter.[4]

XyCraft

"Pipes" quest comes after the Fluid Storage and Manipulation quest. It asks for a Hydro Pump plus any one of several fluid pipes, and it's about getting liquid into a tank. A Pipez Fluid Pipe or Universal Pipe counts, but so do fluid pipes from other mods, so you don't need Pipez to finish it. The quest notes that the Hydro Pump puts water into the pipes at a slow rate, for free.[5]
